    New Enterprise shop on the eastside. It's massive. Almost too much space...but, good to know if it ever gets busy or you're tied up there for whatever reason, you can easily sit, work, or, heck, even camp out there. Their fleet of cars isn't extensive since they're new but they had what I needed. Service was exceptional from start to finish. I had a little tire snafu and of course didn't buy the roadside assistance coverage because I had the car for less than 14 hours so figured, eh...what could go wrong? But, the check tire pressure light came on a couple hours into having the car and I ignored it only to wake up the next day to a flat tire. I used their roadside assistance anyway ($59 flat fee, I believe) and the gals waived the fee in the end anyway just because, which was a very nice gesture. This will definitely be my new go-to Enterprise location.

If you're an Avis Preferred member - which is free & highly recommended, although you can't simply head straight to the vehicle and drive off, as is the case at most of their American airport locations - they usually have a vehicle set aside & ready to go (and always have with me personally each time I've rented there). Just FYI, on-site car rentals at Austin's airport (along with most others across the U.S.) cost more because cities tend to add sizable "convenience fees" (a.k.a. taxes) to vehicles rented by visitors instead of locals. In some cases the taxes/fees alone can exceed the entire rental expense! Definitely not the case here. It does, however, have two drawbacks: the facility is quite small (a literal converted gas station, meaning the old-school variety with a cramped waiting area), and the area's a little dicey at night given its proximity to a number of homeless encampments (though nothing like the situation when Austin rescinded its ban on camping, plus it's not even open at night, unless you're doing an after-hours drop-off).

This was a tough weekend, given all the activities in downtown Austin (SXSW), and I knew traffic could be nutty so I planned accordingly as this was a one-day trip (previous obligation). Happy to say that the outbound bus quickly completed the boarding process and we were on the road in no time, and arrived in Houston at 1:15pm. The driver and attendant were pleasant (apologies I can't recall their names). I did opt to enjoy a meal on board - the chicken club sandwich (with bacon) was decent. Inbound bus back to Austin was right on time and boarded quickly, and I made it home on time - 6:45pm arrival. No meal for me as food options were limited but I did enjoy snacks. Again, the driver and attendant were pleasant (kudos to consistency). In my opinion, this is money well spent due to the overall value of service, and especially if you want to avoid driving yourself. The bus itself is really spacious, clean bathroom, and the seats are comfortable. I managed to nap on both rides. I will definitely use Vonlane again for future travel to Houston or Dallas.

They gave me an electric car because it was the only car they had available, even though I had a reservation for something else. I told them how uncomfortable I was driving the car - I'd never driven an electric car, I didn't know how to charge it, there was no charger where I was going, etc. Plus I was driving to a farm the next morning - I knew the car wouldn't make it. But it was my only option, and they said I could swap the car the next day for something more practical. So I took it. I mean, I hadn't slept in like 24 hours, and I just wanted to get to my destination so I could shower and rest before leaving for Thanksgiving lunch. I didn't know how little it was charged until I started driving - I would barely make it to my 1st stop. It only had 14% charge. I managed to get to a Target parking lot where there were electric car chargers - I didn't know which one to use, I wasn't sure how long I'd be waiting - all the things they should have told me before I left the airport. I read things online, but this was a crash course and I was under time pressure. I sat for an hour and when I disconnected I was deflated that the car had only charged 2%. I had to go. Instead of driving to my next destination, I parked it and got a ride from someone else. No rest, no shower. I'd deal with it in the morning. Instead of going back to the airport, the next morning I tried to find a closer Budget to swap the car. I just didn't know if I could make it back to the airport - and they'd been so unhelpful I didn't want to go back without trying other locations. It was the day after a holiday and it was unlikely they'd have any cars turned in, but I had to try. I'd called 4 neighborhood locations (with no cars) before I hit the jackpot and Yaya from the Budget on 35th answered the phone. They'd only been open 5 minutes! I explained the situation and he asked me if I could get there quickly. Heck yeah, I'd be there in under 30. I pulled up in 15 minutes and he knew who I was immediately. He'd taken my contract number over the phone, so when I walked in - kid and car seat in hand - he said let's get you into a better car for your needs. He immediately went outside and drove around a truck - freshly washed, new tires, new brakes. We spoke for a few minutes and he explained why the first car didn't charge, and then showed me everything that would have helped the day before. He offered a link to find chargers, what kind of charger to use, apologized for the inconvenience and stress the other people caused me. And then he handed me the truck keys and offered me his card and number in case anything else came up. He even said it was okay for me to return the car to the airport. I can't tell you how that changed my week and my trip. Had he been the person helping in the first place, I might have had the confidence to keep that first car. But he wasn't. Instead, he got to be the person who saved the day. Thank you Yaya and Budget team on 35th in Austin!! Next time, I'm going to skip the airport and just get a ride directly to your offices!!
