I've been looking for a good burger joint near my office and I happened to walk by Epic Burger the other day, so I stopped in for lunch. As everyone else has said, it's very modern and minimalist with a basic menu and everything is eco-friendly. The service is fast even with everything being made to order - I got my food in under 10 minutes. I tried a burger with cheddar and my partner tried the turkey burger. Both were good. The cheddar didn't get weird and greasy when it melted and the pickles and lettuce were very crisp. (We skipped the tomatoes & onions.) The biggest down side was the bun - the bottom was extremely soggy. I also tried a chocolate malt, which was pretty tasty but had too much chocolate syrup. It made it a little sickly sweet. The prices are a bit high, especially for lunch, but they're to be expected with everything being organic/free-range. Minus one star for a soggy bun and no yellow mustard. (What kind of burger joint doesn't have yellow mustard? Dijon doesn't count!) The food was good overall and I'll definitely be back. read more

There are two parts to Epic Burger. 1. The amazingly delicious Burger. It was really one of the best I've had in a long time. It was fresh, it was juicy, and it was quick. I got the burger with an egg on it, and that was a very good choice. The special sauce was also good, and the bun topped off the deliciousness. 2. The kind of really disappointing fries. They were really hot when we got them, and then they quickly cooled off into a soggy mess. The taste was something to be desired as well. We got two orders, but when the fries arrived, we could have easily shared one order. It was really cool to have cups that were biodegradable, and the staff was nice, even though I had no idea what to order for the first 5 minutes. The Staff and the burger outweigh the fries. I was extremely hyped on Epic Burger. WAS. Right now I really feel like smashing "epic" out of their sign with a baseball bat. This place is just BURGER. I really like Cody Hudson (local artist who designed EB's menu, logo, and did the murals on the walls), and after leaving am hoping he was about as embarrassed as I was walking out of the place. Epic does its job to 'help' the environment, but this has not solved the issue going on in my nauseous stomach -- which is what I'm paying for. Epic is just not good. The columbia students behind the counter have proved themselves a burden on society by not only not being able to produce change or operate a fry cooker, but sucking the hard earned money from their parents back in Naperville for their degree in volume adjustment or twirling in a circle. ANYWAY.... Before I get too upset again (its been awhile from visit to review)-- I'll leave it at this-- Epic burger is just another burger. I debated with myself over giving Epic 3 or 4 stars. In the end, I won the debate (I know, I'm as surprised as you are) and went with 3. Getting the trivialities out of the way first: The space is pretty nice. Clean, modern, warm. Like an upscale fast food place. Which is what Epic Burger is. They built the place expecting long lines. You can basically have a line from the front door to the counter (way in back, and it's a deep space) without interfering with anything or annoying the patrons dining in the restaurant. Unfortunately you can't see the menu until you get up near the counter, so you can't use your time waiting in line (I went in a bit early and didn't have to wait) to study the menu and decide what you want. Fortunately, the menu is small and doesn't take long to study when you get up there. The girl working the counter must have felt that way too, as she seemed to get impatient with me as I spent about 5 seconds looking at the board to confirm I wanted what I thought I wanted. Then when I couldn't immediately locate the cheese options she recited them to me with a hint of annoyance in her voice. But enough about that! Let's get to the meat of the review, so to speak. I got an Epic Burger with cheese and a side of fries. My total with tax was just under $10. A little steep for a fast food cheeseburger and fries. That said, everything was made to order--and I had to wait a few minutes--and seemed quite fresh. The burger patty was wide but thin, and crisp around the edges. I opted for the whole wheat bun with all the toppings, including grilled onions (included) and horseradish Havarti cheese (extra). As a whole, I enjoyed the taste of the sandwich, but I think most of the flavor came from the fixin's, especially the "epic sauce" and cheese; the burger patty itself didn't seem particularly flavorful. The whole thing was quite messy to eat; you'll go through several napkins. Fortunately they are recycled. The hand cut fries were very tasty but after a while they got kind of soggy, and there were a lot of tiny fries which are hard to eat. Finally, the afternoon after eating this I got some mild to moderate stomach discomfort. To be fair to Epic, I had a stressful afternoon so I can't conclude beyond reasonable doubt that the food was the primary cause, but I'm pretty sure it at least contributed. read more

My lust for anyplace remotely like or even close to the food i ate at Culver's kicked my butt one day, and a search for a good burger took place. I was starving, it was after work and there i saw it :Epic Burger. Thats just what i wanted, "Burger". The fact that it was apparrently an "Epic Burger" well it was worth checking out from name only. Im glad to say i wasnt disappointed at all. The burger was really good...and the fact that there was even an idea that eggs could be involved reminded me of the great meals back in college (i try toi avoid burgers involving eggs). but the burger was big, good, and featured all the good stuff you'd expect. and then there's the fries...outstanding!!!!i love places that have stand-out qualities, esepcially when it comes to fries. For the record I have been hearing good things about this place for awhile. but I kept putting off trying it out because of the name. I have really grown to despise the word EPIC as it is has lost its meaning kind of like the word Extreme. Anyway, yesterday I finally decided to hit this place up for lunch Walking in I noticed how nice and clean the inside was, and how much open space was there.. I had a hard time reading the too brightly lit LCD menu screen and asked the lady behind the counter if they had any paper menus. Without answering me,oddly, she just walked from the back and grabbed me a paper menu/ I take a quick glance and decide on the Epic burger, fries, and fountain soda combo. She asked me about cheese I choose cheddar and asked to have an egg on it. She gave a number to put on my table and I quickly sat down. Not even ten minutes later my burger was served to me. It was a nice thin patty, but still big because it was peaking out of the sides of the bun. I could see the egg sitting on top and smell the grilled onions on it. First bite told me the burger had a great char on it wand was nicely seasoned. The bun was soft but not mushy or squishy. The tangy Epic sauce was pleasant addition. Veggies were crisp and the onions nice and soft and generously piled on. One the egg started ooze its perfect over medium yolk over everything I knew I picked the right spot for my lunch. The side of fries were really great too. Nicely salted and super fresh. My only gripe about them was that I wish they had been a little more crisp. It was an otherwise fantastic burger. Free-range beef burger. Doesn't get any better than this. Old school buttery bun and caramelized onions to order. Fries are fresh cut and delicious. As others have mentioned, this is no 'low fat' burger. It can be greasy, no lie. (However, the dessert brownies that are tempting you on the counter aren't that good, run down to nearby Panera for a tasty pastry). Some have complained about the lack of menu options. Personally, I like that they stick to what they know and don't put a ton of salads in the fridge case or try to sell things they are not good at. Simply menu is the way to go. A little on the pricey side for lunch, but definitely worth it if you enjoy a good burger that was grass fed and treated humanely. Some have mentioned that they should be paying less because it is a pretty green company. Sorry folks, green in these times means more expensive. Yes, they use recycled products, but until we have a countrywide (or global) shift to using natural products and putting our resources there - these will still cost more. It is the integrity of the company to provide these amenities, and yes, you are paying for them. If you would like to see these cost down, subscribe to the movement! I like this place. It's a great lunchtime spot, and there are lots of tables if you choose to dine in. Burgers are good, if perhaps not exactly EPIC. The Epic Sauce is a tangy mayonnaise, and it's very good. Definitely get the sauce. They do offer Junior Burger options for a lighter appetite. Fries are good, as are the smoothies. I have seen other people on Yelp complain about the service, but I find them to be very friendly. A burger, fries, and drink ran me $11. So it's not McDonald's cheap. But, hey, it's not McDonald's flavor either. In recent days, I also tried out M Burger in Streeterville, and Epic Burger is far superior, taste-wise. They have a few flat screens throughout the restaurant. One has their twitter feed up there, which is fun if you want to post stuff and see it on the big screen. Like dorks, we totally did that. This place makes a pretty good burger. We came here for dinner after a long day of playing tourists downtown. I ordered a kids (I'm not sure if it's really called a kids but it's the smaller one) burger while my boyfriend got the regular sized one with fries for us to share. My burger was cheaper but when they came out they were the same size. Order the kids one and save yourself a little change. The burgers were juicy and the fries were just right. As much as I love french fries, there's always a part of me that thinks "do I really want to be doing this?" as I chomp into handfuls of trans-fat soaked potatoes. This place (trans-fat free) helps me transcend that experience and reach a higher and more focused state of french fry bliss otherwise only achievable at Spacetime Flotation Tanks (provided you can sneak in a packet of fries, get in the tank while they're still warm, and keep the fries from getting wet). Given that this place carves out a unique niche in the fast food scene, with its turkey burger and cage-free egg topping (declined), I'm not sure why I'm not more excited about the place. Maybe it's in part that for all its assembly-line efficiency, it doesn't (yet?) attract the eclectic and often rascally mix of coupon-clipping customers of McDonald's. Ethical/social consciousness and burgers are an awkward mix. The electronic menu board gives this place a corporate feel and makes me feel, just like the pickles, onions, and slabs of meat, that I'm just another item on the assembly line. But, I have to say that the staff (including the guy who bused my empty basket) are genuinely friendly and actually care about whether you like your burger. If this place took a lesson from the deep south's legendary Five Guys, and offered a staggering range of toppings (green peppers, mushrooms, jalapenos, hot sauce, etc.), this would truly by the mecca of a new breed of burger snobs, and I'd have to give this five stars without needing the rascaltry I so adore about McDonald's (even though I never go there except to use the restrooms). read more

Alright, upon further testing and consideration I'm bumping Epic up one star. The burgers are, in fact, very tasty. The hand-cut fries also, very tasty. Their chocolate/peanut butter/easy banana "smoothie" (it's a shake, let's call spades, spades) wakes me in my sleep with the cravings. The price though, man. I just can't get past it. A very solid 3.5 stars. I think finding the ultimate burger is the trendy thing to do right now, so of course, I had to try Epic! Having had just experienced Five Guys not too long ago, I could only compare the two. Burgers: I LOVED the horseradish havarti on the Epic burger. I would go back just for that. Can I even find horseradish havarti somewhere? I am going to start looking at the local cheese shops! The burger patty was thin, but was very tasty. The whole burger itself seemed to feel a little bit healthier, not super greasy and light. (Weird thing to say, I know. I think their whole thing is the all-natural, organic ingredients.) And the wheat bun was soft and yummy. (I loved Five Guys, as well, and it was very flavorful but did feel heavier and greasier.) Fries: The fries at Epic were the hand-cut ones which were good, but I would give it to Five Guys. (They seemed fresher and crispier.) Plus, Epic's portions were a little skimpy. Value: Epic was a bit pricey for what you got. I ordered the Junior, which was plenty big for me, and it was $5. That wasn't including any cheese. (I think you can get grilled onions, though.) Five guys did it right where you could get all these different toppings at no additional charge. I think both are pretty comparable in price. Overall, I liked Epic and would go back! Decent fast food burgers at a reasonable price. I would have to say Five Guys rates a little higher in my book, but it is also a little bit greasier so I probably can't go there too often. Don't get me wrong... great, great burgers. The times I've been here I've never been disappointed, but the price is just as epic (I'm sure others have beaten me to that pun). If they could just lower the price a little then I would frequent this establishment. As is, they would have to prepare not just a great burger, but the best burger for me to justify the bill. I patronize Epic Burger specifically for their turkey burger. I love it! It's a very flavorful, generous size patty and you can even add avocado which makes it even more delicious. I was in just yesterday at the South loop location and one of the servers, Isaiah was really helpful. Since I've only ever had their tky burger I asked him what his favorite item on the menu was. He said the Epic burger so I'm going to try that next time for sure. Also they have milkshakes which always look so good. I think I'll try the peanut butter one next time. Overall this is a casual burger spot but what I really like is the friendly service...and the grilled onions! You order at the counter, have a seat, then someone brings the food to your table. Maybe I'm just fortunate enough to come from a place where we have Five Guys, Flipside, Smashburger and Jack in the Box but this burger joint didn't really do it for me. The meant crumbles apart way too quickly and easily and they toppings are very generic. The service isn't fabulous either. When I asked the lady taking our order if the portobello "burger" was good she laughed at me (?) which was a little off putting. She also assumed we knew was epic sauce was and forgot to mention it comes on the sandwiches. Luckily I asked and got it on the side because I HATE thousand island dressing which is essentially what it is. Neither of us got drinks or fries because it tacks another several dollars onto the $6+ we were already paying for very regular sandwiches. Not quite epic enough, but still deliciously tasty. It's a basic counter service place, quite akin to Smashburger. Their catch is to make a "more mindful burger"--all natural beef, nothing frozen, fresh local produce, etc. It all sounds well and good, but and they still manage to keep the costs at a reasonable price. But if we're talking strictly taste, this is a good, but not great, burger. The standout of the entire burger is the grilled onions, which are deliciously tangy and add a bit of sweet and sourness to the burger. The patty is very good, and definitively in the mold of a Smashburger patty. Vegetables are solid. Where the burger doesn't quite make it over the top are two things. One is the fried egg, which I LOVE to get on any burger. The egg itself is both tasteless and textureless and adds nothing to the burger. A real disappointment. The second is the special sauce, which tastes like it came straight out of a Big Mac. There's also not nearly enough of it, which led me to breaking out the ketchup bottle on more than one occasion. Epic Burger's bright, modern interior and its organic/eco-friendly stuff make me feel like a young, hip and conscious consumer. Oh yeah, and it's connected to college dorm... From the outset, I should be impressed. This is the way ALL food should be. All things made for eating should also actually be fit for eating. And the menu at Epic Burger abides perfectly with my view, boasting such terminology as "cage free", "organic", "nitrate free", "transfat free", "all natural", "no preservatives", "no hormones/antibiotics", etc. I should be VERY impressed...but I don't think I am. And it's not just becuase the mushroom in my portabella mushroom sandwich came completely smushed flat... I guess my predicament with Epic Burger comes from an incongruity of concept that I can't get over: a burger, fries and soda with all the health-conscious frills is STILL going to be pretty bad for you. "Transfat free" fries are still full of other fats; "all natural" red meat is still loaded with cholesterol; and soda...always and inevitably pure high-fructose corn syrup...unfortunately, my lunch today didn't leave me feeling any better about myself. At $10+ for a combo, this place is more than twice the price of McDonald's...my lasting quandary is, is it worth it to pay the extra dollars for food that's still rather far from healthy? By no means do I have a champion resistance to the unfair tastiness of junk food...but shouldn't a business that is trying to embody the health-conscious/eco-friendly message make food that's good for you, too? Don't get me wrong, though...Epic Burger is a-ok in my book. I just feel really frustrated in how difficult it can be to find food that's acutally gonna be good for you...and how molded I am to gravitate toward fried things and pizza and ice cream, and I'm totally taking it out on Epic Burger. I'm not a healthy eater anyway, so really could care less about the hormone free, trans fat, oh so healthy burgers, and hormone free eggs. I don't eat eggs with my burger anyway. I just think Epic burger is good. It's the closest thing I can get to Steak N Shake without driving to O'hare or Kankakee which makes it ot-tay with me! Epic Fail Burger. Bottom line, the food was underwhelming and overpriced. I would not recommend this place to anyone. It reminded me of that feeling you get when you pay $10 for a Budweiser at a concert... except you know what you're getting when you order that overpriced beer. For a $6 burger or $10 combo, I expected some quality beef and fresh fries. I also thought there'd be more topping options like at Meathead's. All you get is lettuce, tomato, grilled or raw onions, cheese for extra cost and choice of white or wheat bun. Oh, I forgot about the "epic sauce" which was mayo and idk what. The meat wasn't so great. Once I saw the crumbliness of the ground beef and that some of it was kinda charred, I knew it wasn't going to be a satisfying meal. The fries had potential bc they were natural cut, but they were just ok. Not a fan of Pepsi, but I guess some people like it. I paid $17 to eat a burger and SHARE a pop and fries and it wasn't even that good. So disappointing. I would rather go to Wendy's and spend half as much. read more

Having eaten at IN-N-OUT regularly since my childhood, I'm afraid that Epic Burger doesn't hold a candle to the West Coast wonder that is the Double-Double. I did like the interior of the place, it has a deconstructed, architectural style and cool balls of light suspended from the ceiling, but that wasn't enough to save the place from a two star rating since, in addition to a so-so burger, they botched my milk shake and took forever to make me a new one. read more

I love, love, love hand-cut fries and Epic Burger's did not disappoint. Plus, there were plenty of them. The burger itself was wonderful! It had the uneven, slightly crispy edges that reminded me of a Steak 'n Shake steakburger. Ordinarily, I shy away from "special sauces" on a hamburger, but, for whatever reason, I decided to go with the sauce and I'm sure glad I did! I got the egg bun. 4.5 stars really. I loved it. I say this is fast food at its best. If you're in the mood for a no frills, delicious burger (I'm not talking some 3 inch thick stye burger) and AMAZING fries, then head to Epic Burger. The place was pretty empty since it was Sunday night and my burger was promptly delivered with delicious grilled onions and the rest of their "epic" toppings. Some reviews comment on the "messy" part- but isn't a burger suposed to be messy? It's part of the essential burger experience. I would caution you against ordering your own side of fries if you're going with two people. A lot of reviewers seem to annoyed by the price of this place, or are distrustful of the ecologically trendy 'green' marketing going on in the restaurant. However, I don't think there's anything dishonest going on here. The owner is actually targeting people (like me) who consider eating to be a political action, not just some quick convenience. The truth of the matter is that purchasing local, organic produce, making homemade buns, and procuring fresh, humanely-raised beef is an *expensive* undertaking. This is what "real" food costs, folks. If you're happy eating chemical and antibiotic-laden food from massive factory farms that pollute the earth, then by all means grab a burger and fries from McDonald's for $4. But if you want ethical, sustainable food that tastes infinitely better, be ready to spend $10. Learn to appreciate the true cost (and awesome flavor) of free-range meat, and learn to eat less of it. The food was phenomenal, one of the best burgers I've ever had. I asked the owner where the meat came from, and he said it's currently coming from Neiman Ranch... it's out in California, but it's got one of the best reputations for ethical/sustainable beef. He said he was working to get beef from Wisconsin farmers as well. I'll definitely be returning to this place, it's one of the only places in the city to get a free-range burger! read more

If I were writing this review back in the summer of 2008 then I would've easily given this place 4 of 5 stars. But in 2009 I've noticed a clear drop-off in quality. The food is still good but its nowhere near the original quality. Epic Burger was once a very fitting title, the burgers were literally..... EPIC. Now they're flat and the fries aren't always seasoned well. But despite that, the organic ingredients are still a welcomed change from your usual Burger place. Epic Burger is quite expensive, which is why it disappoints me that food started to slip. When the place first opened the food was worth every penny. The meals tend to cost upwards of $10, so it's easy to understand some people being less than thrilled with the place. The dining area looks good and its very spacious, and always clean. And their service is always satisfactory but at times too slow. But its definitely worth a look if your in the South Loop and craving a good fresh tasting burger. read more

I have to say, burgers with grass fed ingredients always peak my interest! They also had fried egg and avocado, so you know I was telling my friends to come with me to try this! I had friends who took photos of this place while we were on a conference so it was definitely on my bookmark list while visiting Chicago! I was overall satisfied with my meal! The burger was delicious and I felt I had ordered just the right amount when I ordered the junior epic burger. I ordered my epic sauce on the side instead of on the burger so I could dip these addictive fries in it. And all the flavors meshed together so well! I also greatly appreciated and got really excited for the wheat roll all over the photos. Very delicious and I almost ordered a second burger! As much as I enjoyed the meal, I have to lower my stars and rating for service. When initially ordering my food, I was baffled as to why my burger was missing so many ingredients I had asked to put on (and theoretically paid for), including a full order of fries. I asked for avocado and fried egg and they were missing from my food. They had forgotten tomatoes in my friend's burger as well. I also ultimately noticed they didn't give me a receipt and were unable to pull it up to check if I had already paid for it or if I was paying extra for fries I clearly ordered. They also didn't include my epic sauce on the side when asked. When approaching the cashier who took my order, he walked off and deferred it to someone else, which to me seemed very off putting. Luckily my friends and I were able to ultimately get all the components of my meal which were missing, but I had lost my appetite initially due to the sub-par customer service. I ended up getting everything I wanted but after the employees not exactly having the best tone about it. I ended up eating maybe 15-20 minutes after my friends did due to the amount of missing items plus feeling less excited about my meal due to how the employees made me feel. Went there last night. My overall review was that it was ok. Nothing epic about it. I don't like fresh cut fries style. The burger was more bun than burger. I typically do this everywhere I go but I dig out a majority of the bun off my burgers and sandwiches and after I did that, it looked really not much different than a McD's burger. I got Horseradish Havarti cheese on it and could barely taste it, along with barely tasting their epic sauce, which I'm glad the gf ordered it on the side because I was able to add more to my burger. That being said, if I was in the area (and I am quite often at the Library across the street), and I wanted a burger, I'd consider going back. The atmosphere was different of most places and quite honestly I like that kind of atmosphere. The place did look sorta yuppity too but the over feel of it worked. Oh and the one thing that I would definitely go back for is the P.B. Enjoy shake, incredible. But I'd get a double burger and skip the fries with that. read more

I so wanted to hate this place; don't even ask why because I don't know. However, it was delicious and fulfilled all of my fantasies of eating a dripping wet...all-natural...burger. I have to admit, for a "fast-food" joint, it was darn G-O-O-D. Granted, half way through my burger, I had the special sauce on my suit and an empty bun from where all the meat used to be. But, I can't complain; it just meant that somehow I was eating so fast that I lost sight of the burger/bun ratio. The fries were decent, although I do like Patty's fries better. The food gets 5 stars, but the girl at the counter was rude to me even though I was the only one in line and she took forever to even acknowledge me(hmmm...) so the one star is dropped for that. read more

I wen to Epic last week and was conflicted about several things. They have a lot going for them, but a few fatal flaws that detract from what could be an otherwise fantastic offering. FOOD: 4 STARS I was impressed with the quality of the burgers and fries. It wasn't the run of the mill, cookie-cutter burger. The beef was delicious and it appeared to be high-quality, organic meat that was hand-formed. The fries were delicious as well. Not too heavy on the oil and with skin left on them. SERVICE: 3 STARS The people at the counter taking our order were obviously less than thrilled to be there. They didn't smile or act remotely interested in being courteous or helpful in making suggestions or answering questions. However, midway through our meal, the very polite manager came over to ask if we needed anything. AMBIANCE: 2 STARS This place has the makings of a hip, reclaimed industrial loft-turned-burger joint , with high, unfinished ceilings and retro design work. Unfortunately, it also has really craptastic acoustics...which is not helped by the giant speakers on the walls that are blasting music at about 2 notches higher in volume than what any customer in the place would like it to be (my group's consensus). They really need to invest in some acoustical treatments to those high ceilings, or turn the volume down slightly. VALUE: 2 STARS While the food quality is excellent and definitely of a much higher quality than other hamburger options in the city, the price they expect people to pay for this is a bit silly. For a full meal of fries, drink and burger, you're paying more than $10 per person. I could probably understand somewhere in the $8 range, but $10 to $12 for a burger lunch? LOCATION: 2 STARS Epic burger sits on State Street, more than several blocks south of where the rest of the corporate lunch crowd tends to congregate. For us, it was about a 9-block walk from the center of the loop. Easily doable in the warmer months, but it leaves this option less than desirable in the winter. Overall, I want to like this place. The food deserves praise, but the ho-hum service and loud music was really unpleasant. read more

Every now and then I get this ridiculous craving for a burger, and being the pseudo-passive person that I am, I usually cave. Thanks to that craving though, I got to try one of the best burgers I have ever haddd. Epic definitely lives up to its name. I mean really, with all natural ingredients, how could you go wrong? The burger was huge, juicy, and delicious. The fries are particularly awesome when hot. The atmosphere is really cute and the staff is super friendly. Yes, it's a little pricey, but worth the splurge. My only regret is not packing my leftovers!! read more
