I had to park a block + away, so when I passed by Güero on the way and saw a full and thriving place, I was expecting something similar in this neighborhood where I spent some years of my childhood. It was a Wednesday, so I wasn't surprised that the place was empty, but two couples soon arrived. There didn't seem to be a lot of choices on the menu, but I chose the Quinoa garbanzo dish and the chips. The chips were insipid and pasty after chewing. At least the salsa should be good...it did say South America, so I was expecting a really picante ají like what I had on my trips to Ecuador and Perú. NOT. I overheard the server tell one couple that they don't have any spicy salsas. Hmmm. So on to the Quinoa...it should have been billed as a light salad. Where are the garbanzos? Oh, finally found both garbanzos at the bottom of the bowl. It was over $20 and I was still hungry enough to have to make myself a sandwich when I got home. They need to turn up the heat. One of the couples, and I as well, had to keep coats on while we were there. I suppose I should find something nice to say...? ... Cloth napkins! Extremely disappointed! read more

I went here as a last minute thing. Parking is hard to find which stinks. The restaurant itself is small and cute. Food was great. I had the ceviche for my meal and maracuyá for dessert which was absolutely delicious. The only complaint I have was that when I came the restaurant had many open seats, and keeping in mind I was by myself you'd think it would be easy to get a seat. The staff told me that I needed a reservation and that I probably wouldn't be able to stay which was irritating. After 5 minutes a girl came back and said I could have a seat in the corner. While waiting for my food a group of people kept starting at me and making obnoxious noises making fun of me for who knows why. Then as they were leaving they made a snide remark about how they let a kid have a seat without a reservation take into account I'm 19... not that the restaurant could have necessarily prevented this but it definitely did alter my first experience eating here. read more

Refreshing addition to choices of healthy vegan restaurants in Portland! While they're vegetarian & vegan; they do avoid cross-contamination with non-vegan foods & prep surfaces/utensils. AND the food is delicious & the staff is awesome. Space and location are great, too. Our server, Naomi was very accommodating and friendly. She helped us navigate the menu and had a great dessert recommendation. They advertise Empanadas everyday for a reason, and the secret is the dipping sauces. The only odd thing there is they carry Beefeaters gin! We stopped in on a whim while on a search to eat during the power outage in our neighborhood. Nice selection of Pisco cocktails, pretty presentation of food. We split 2 empanadas with the yellow salsa which was delicate and flavorful and then split the Salteado which had good flavor, texture and was delicious. Wrapped up sharing choc. cake. All flavors in the dishes we split were delicate and nuanced (may be missed if wolfed down!) and the ingredients were fresh. Warm, modern atmosphere and prompt, attentive service. Love the mural on the backwall. Who needs unicorns when you got flying alpacas ;) read more

We dined here for our anniversary and it was the perfect choice -- the space is casual enough to be very comfortable but the drinks and food are lovely enough to feel special. We tried the empanadas, polenta entree, and charquican. The pebre, oils, and other sauces were spectacular. I wish there had been slightly more tempeh with the charquican and the polenta block was huge compared to the small amount of eggplant on the plate, but neither was a big deal. It's so nice to find new unique vegan options in town. I also enjoyed a delicious mocktail and the service was great. We'll be back! read more

We had a delicious meal. Service was timely but not intrusive so we relaxed and enjoyed the evening. The cocktails were yummy. There were 4 of us and we shared the empanadas and bocadillo for appetizers. We were early enough to get them for happy hour prices. Then we shared 3 medium plates and 1 large. For dessert we had 1 slice of cheesecake. The carnivores were very satisfied with the meal. It was also very reasonably priced. I'd happily eat here regularly. read more

Great food, ambience and service. The Ensalada is amazing!- A perfect combination of flavors and textures. The ceviche is good and so is the Matcha green tea cheesecake and polenta. The soy curl empanada was ok. A little dry and bland but did come with a good dipping sauce. It's a little overpriced for the portion sizes or I'd go more often. read more

Ok, I admit I am not a vegetarian, and have given Epif an extra star because I might be missing something. What they seem to be missing is flavor! I love the foods of Peru, and this didn't seem like any Peruvian I've had. 4 of us tried a number of things on the menu, and none really stood out. While the empanadas were okay, (sweet potato the best), the sauces were tasteless. You would think an aji amarillo sauce should maybe have a little spice, since it is such a great pepper, but it had no taste at all. The aji verde, was the better, but don't even say slightly spicy. The causa tasted like plain potatoes with cream cheese inside, the menu said it had avocado, but seems to have good missing or was buried somewhere. Huerto Andino was so mushy my first thought it was gruel. Salteado and Chacarero were good as you were going to get there. On positive note, the dishes were very artfully presented, and server was nice. read more

I went with friends to try out this restaurant last week. Big disappointment! Food was not great, service pretty slow and I found it super expensive~$24 for 4 empanadas, really? In addition, my friend order a beer that never arrived and he was charged for that beer. He and his wife came back asking for a refund, and Epif staff didn't even say "I am sorry." So glad my fiance and I were able to come to this place. Called ahead to make a reservation and they had our table ready once we arrived. Server was very knowledgeable of the menu and made great recommendations. Drinks were delicious! they did a great job on the Pisco Sour's . Our only complaint was that there was no background music to drown out other peoples conversations. Also, we were looking for a better vibe once those Piscos starting go down smooth. Maybe they didnt have music because it was 7pm?? Either way we will be back next time we come to Portland. Food was priced fairly. read more

We came for the happy hour, which is fantastic, and stayed for dinner. At $3 for a drink or snack, Epif's happy hour compares favorably to Aalto's, which is known for its $2 cocktails. (Epif, however, has happy hour every day; Aalto only on weekdays.) The empanadas are delicious. If I had to subsist on one thing for the rest of my life, I would probably choose them. I felt silly ordering the quinoa--seemed like it would be the go-to in this city--but it was unlike any rendition of quinoa I've ever had. (Granted, I don't eat Andean cuisine.) It was well balanced, interesting, and hearty, especially for a vegan dish. For dessert we had the matcha vegan cheesecake (they source theirs from Rawdacious). Still puzzled as to why the restaurant wasn't packed on a Saturday evening. Epif immediately became a favorite. read more

Epif is a little amazing gem. Everything was very fresh and excellent. The salsas are unique and delicious. We had the chips and salsa which are slices of sweet potato seasoned perfectly. We had the empanadas which were perfectly puffy and crispy at the same time and amazing both with the salsas and without. The vegan mozzarella is truly life-changing. We had the chocolate cheesecake...and oh.my.god. It's drizzled with raspberry and chocolate sauce, which you'll want to lick off the plate. It's surprisingly large - sharing is a must unless you want to feel a little sick. It's very thick but oh so delicious. Highly recommend this place. We already can't wait to go back. read more

I visited Epif tonight for Dinner with a friend. It was my second visit and it was as delicious as I remembered from the first time. It's such a creative, exciting vegan menu offering gluten-free, sugar-fee, soy-free, and nut-free options. It doesn't get much better than that. Because I am vegan, I am always looking for the perfect vegan restaurant. I think I found it! I loved everything that I tasted. The pisco cocktails are also a wonderful treat, like nothing you have ever tried before. Our first visit was on a Saturday night and the restaurant was packed. We didn't have a reservation, but they were able to seat us at the bar. Tonight was a Thursday night and there were plenty of open tables, but that's a shame! Every seat should have been filled, because this restaurant is outstanding! I can't wait for my next visit here. Hmmm....maybe next weekend. read more

I was curious about this place because I've visited Peru, and I wanted to try vegan versions of Peruvian / South American cuisine. Everything (food, ambiance, service) was great! The place is a bright and colorful, and the staff were very friendly and attentive. My friend and I ordered the mushroom ceviche, empanadas, a mashed potato cream cheese roll, a maracuja cheesecake and chocolate cheesecake. We were stuffed even before dessert came, but the cheesecakes were amazing. It was definitely one of best meals I've had in Portland. I was so happy to see dishes veganized that I adored when I used to eat animals. Ceviche especially. Ceviche was my last temptation before I stopped the slaughter. I asked if they could make my dish very spicy, but they only had un-noticeable heated hot sauce. The Ceviche was so good that I wouldn't dare ruin it with processed hot sauce. If you really like your capsaicin, bring a few fresh hot peppers from home and sneak a nibble from time to time. First-rate culination with great red wine. read more
