Beth is a freaking godsend. I have been seeing the same two stylists for the last 10 years, however, I can't get back home to Vancouver as much as I'd like to so I decided it was finally time to find myself a stylist/colorist in Chicago. After googling "best balayage in Chicago" and Yelping up a storm, I discovered Beth. There's a reason that she has so many five star reviews - she is awesome! I called to book and got an appointment within the week for a haircut and partial balayage. The receptionist, Madeline, is sweet as pie and made the whole experience really easy! When I had to call and change my appointment due to a scheduling conflict with work, it was no problem. I had booked for a Thursday and was able to get an appointment the following Tuesday. In Vancouver, I'd often have to book my stylist 4-6 weeks in advance, so this was awesome! At the beginning of the appointment, I was asked to fill out a questionnaire about my hair and myself, etc. Before beginning the services, Beth went over everything we had discussed and recorded it on a contract, which was a nice touch to ensure that I would receive what I had asked for and if for some unforeseen reason I didn't, they would fix it for me free of charge. I can never seem to curl my hair properly myself, so I asked Beth to show me how at the end of our appointment. She explained the proper way to use my curling iron to get the large, flowing waves I was looking for, as well as how to use a velcro curler on my bangs to get a nice sweeping effect. The day after my appointment, I curled my hair and it came out wonderfully! I am so happy :) My hair looks AWESOME. The color and cut are absolutely perfect. I have major, major trust issues when it comes to my hair, so this was a giant leap, but I'm so glad I took it! Beth will definitely be the only person touching my locks as long as I live in Chicago! I have never had my hair dyed before but caved in when I couldn't hide my greys any longer. I was terrified of changing my hair color and I did my research and settled on going to Epoch after reading all the great reviews from Yelp. I made an appointment with Beth and after a consultation we ended up doing two processes: all over semi permanent color to cover the greys and bayalage to add dimension. Beth did my color while Madeline did my blow dry and style. My hair came out looking amazing! I was beyond happy with the results. Not only was the color great, but the blow dry and style was the best I've ever had done. Better than my normal salon and better than the blow dry bars. My hair is thin and I wanted loose tossels, not curls, and Madeline made it work. Thank you so much to Beth and Madeline again! One negative is the parking is awful. When I heard my wedding videographer was opening a salon I was like whuuuuuut?? So of course I got curious. But I already had someone I went to religiously so it was hard to make a switch. Until I decided I really wanted to try this ombré/balayage thing. My previous color girl just didn't quit get what I was trying to go for. So I went on yelp and looked for some reviews on good places for ombré/balayage and immediately saw all these glowing reviews for Beth at epoch. I called to make my appointment and instantly fell in love with the place. Madeleine on the phone was great! We spoke a lot and she really asked a lot of questions as to what I was going for so that she could give Beth a heads up on what to expect for my appointment. I instantly felt at ease about trusting my hair to these ladies. As soon as I got there, I was greeted by their host, Moose! Hahaha such a jolly dog who loves to sniff you and say hello. Then Beth sat me down and we talked a lot about what I was trying to go for. She went through the different stages of color that my hair would have to go through to get to the lightness I wanted. She said she wanted to be aggressive but not too aggressive as to damage my hair. I liked how she made no hard promises but that she was confident in time I could get to the look I wanted. She then went over the pricing and also what I could expect going forward as maintenance. Being a tax gal, I like it when people break down the numbers. If it's going to cost me a fortune, I'd like to know beforehand so that maybe I can opt out of the style and do something else. After assessing what I was going for, we decided to do a full balayage treatment. Then she got to work. She apologized ahead of time saying that she doesn't really talk much during the balayage treatment. That was fiiiiiiine by me. I'd rather have my stylist totally focused on my hair and I don't really chat much either. I just like to play a little candy crush and maybe take a nap. The balayage treatment was faster than some ombré or highlight treatments I've gotten so that was nice. Hmmm what else??? Oh the shampoo. I got the best head massage ever! Hahaha thanks Beth. Was really hard not to pass out with my mouth hanging open. After a totally relaxing shampoo and toner treatment, I was back at the chair to start my haircut. After my blow dry was done we both kinda stared at my hair dazed and in love. I was so happy with my color and how the balayage turned out. The cut completely complimented my color and I had that sexy bounce to my locks that I love whenever I leave a salon. I got home and kept telling my hubby how much I loved my hair! I AM OBSESSED!!! They were professional and nice. However, my hair stylist absolutely did not give me what I asked for walking in. At first she told me that the color I wanted would be impossible (which was a disappointment but I at least appreciated her honesty), after some more discussion her and I agreed that we would dye my hair a lighter color than it currently was. I was very surprised at the end when my hair was in fact DARKER than when I walked in. She seemed uncomfortable with the fact that it was obvious I hadn't asked for this and made a comment how 'for big occasions it is always better to look closer to natural' -- I personally did not appreciate that comment given that I am paying for a service and not her advice on what color I should go for. I think they are a good salon, but really need to do a better job of coloring different types of hair so as to not make this mistake again. read more

Highly recommend Deanne for color. I went to Epoch to see Deanne, and this was the second time I've been to the salon (she did a great job the first time and I had keratin bond extensions at the time). I went into the salon and said I wanted to be dark and she took me pretty dark, but I said I wanted to be darker... she was hesitant and told me it may be too dark, but she took me darker because I wanted to be darker. The color was really pretty! But I obviously didn't know what I wanted because it was really too dark for my skin tone. I called the salon and told them I felt too dark; they got me in for an appointment really quickly but I still didn't feel great after I left. So, they booked me for another appointment the next morning and Deanne came in early to do my hair. She toned it perfectly and we ended up going lighter - i am so happy with it. She and everyone at the salon were so understanding of my issue, despite the fact that it was clearly my own fault for wanting to be darker. So I came back for another appointment because it was well due, and I asked Beth to do what she did last time for me, and showed her pics of her work last time that I loved, and to basically lighten me up again and show as little of my black roots as possible. (I have naturally black hair and I had gotten a blonde balayage from her before). I had stressed to her how I wanted as little of my black roots to show as possible. I thought we had an understanding but to my disappointment, the end results were basically no change to my hair. My black roots were still prominent and wasn't lightened at all, and I barely noticed any change in my lighter areas too, besides it being really choppy in color. It wasn't blended well and my hair looked so contrasted and actually darker than before. So I emailed the salon and told them that I wasn't happy with the results and that my hair looked really dark and almost grayish for the blonde parts and they told me to come in and that they'd fix it. I went in and I weirdly felt very uncomfortable while I was sitting there waiting because one of the ladies (older, with colorful hair) working there literally gave me the stink eye and I caught her staring at me rudely and she noticed and quickly gave a fake smile and walked away. I don't know what that was about? And then Beth's "fix" for me was to just tone my hair with some shampoo. And she said my hair would lighten up more, the more I shampooed it. I wish she would have told me that, and it would've spared me to leaving work early to make a trip down to the salon. If that was her fix, I would've just stayed home and shampooed my hair myself...She also didn't even shampoo my entire hair. Just the front tiny part of blonde that looked dark and grayish after my appointment. So I left work early, ubered in rush hour to the salon, only for her to shampoo like 10 strands of hair lol. So I went home and a couple weeks passed by and I just hated my hair to the point where I felt really down about how I looked overall. Nothing I did helped it. You can't feel confident if your hair is looking all sorts of wrong. My black roots were still prominent, and the "lightened" areas were still really patchy and a stark brassy blonde color (even though I was using toner shampoo at home). The worst part was how unblended everything was. It just looked like I had streaky highlights from an at home dye kit. It was also the holidays so I was out of town a lot for thanksgiving, xmas, and then New Years, so by the time life settled down and the holiday craziness settled, I finally got around to having time to address my disaster hair So I made ANOTHER appointment with another stylist (Evelyn) to try and fix the issue and thankfully she blended things out to be more cohesive. And she was very lovely and meticulous and definitely listened to my concerns and fixed the previous disaster. But I still want to note how frustrating it is to have to spend almost $600 there within 3 months just to get my hair looking back to being o-k. Each session was almost $300 with tip; It's very expensive at this salon, plus tipping, and if I pay that much, I really do expect to be 100% happy with the end results, and for my concerns to be fixed. Also to note, I think I have always felt a little uncomfortable going there because whenever I go there, there's never any people of color there. But there's always a ton of blonde white girls that are there, so maybe that's their thing. Plus getting the stink eye from the other stylist doesn't help, I feel like they gossip about people who ask for fixes.. Im not sure if I'll be back because I feel a tinge uncomfortable. But if you do go, I would ask for Evelyn to be your stylist, I think she truly cares about her clients happiness. She's also like the one woman of color that's a stylist there so there's that too lol. It sucks because I always recommended this salon to my friends, but now I can't do that with a full conscience. Her and her assistants were so nice and very accommodating, making sure i felt satisfied whether it was just sitting there and of course with my hair. I started to going to Epoch about a year ago when we moved to Chicago. I have had several appointments with Sara, all of which have been wonderful. Sara takes the time to listen to what the client wants and then is very patient in her process in order to achieve those results. Everyone in the salon from the receptionist to the other stylists are friendly and welcoming. The salon has taken many measures to make sure clients feel safe during covid. Prices are standard for what you get; I mean, if you want a great cut and color you need to be willing to pay accordingly. Overall great place and would recommend to anyone. read more

I went to Epoch for the first time last month. I had Sarah. At my first appointment, I requested bangs, a curly shag, to be exact. I have really long curly hair, and I let her know that, getting bangs would be daunting, but I really wanted to try it. She told me that bangs did come with a little bit more maintenance, but she would leave them long enough, that I could still wear them pulled back, or in a bun. We chatted about me getting color done in the future, I told her I definitely wanted highlights, and a root touch up. At the end of the appointment, she walked me over, she booked me for some sort of color, and let me know, that she did have another appointment on that day and her assistant would have to finish me. Fast forward to the second appointment, when they called me to confirm my second appointment, I asked them, if I could instead get a root touch up and a haircut. Or root, a partial balyage and bangtrim. The receptionist said, that, I was booked for a full balyage. She said it was a two and a half hour appointment, and there was no way Sarah would be able to cut my hair. Because, I was being finished by an assistant. Ok, I've worked in the salon industry, I graduated for Aveda institute. I've run a few front desks and I've never had a problem rearranging an appointment, especially since Sarah said, we can work out what we're going to do with the color, within those 2 hours, which is what she said to me when we first initially booked the appointment. By the 2nd appointment, she admitted to forgetting, what the initial conversation was. She instead, acted like I was a difficult client. Sarah barely talked to me throughout the service. She seemed stressed, or overbooked. They seemed horrified, that I wanted a haircut with a root touch up instead of a full balayage. I went ahead with the full balayage, and they said that she should be able to squeeze in the bang trim, at the very least. Again, they made me feel, like I was giving them a hard time, about the bang trim. When I said my bangs grow out fast, Sarah, even said, "well you know that's the thing about bangs" I was so irritated with that comment. Afterwards, the assistant, finished my hair, and although she was sweet, she knew nothing about textured, curly hair. She brushed my wet hair, which is a curly hair no no, in any salon. I had to direct her to twirl it, and show her how to defuse it. She also used barely any product in my hair. I did like the color but not worth the price or the bad service. After all that, I was charged a whopping $270. Oh yeah and Sarah didn't want to do my bang trim, so I never got the bang trim. She acted like she could do it in 15 minutes, but she did have a client sitting with bleach on and didn't want me to wait, Which is what she told me. I told her, I get it, and chose not to wait. I was over it at that point. The worst part of it all and the reason I decided to write a review is, while waiting for my ride at the front desk, the receptionist assured me, after I paid of course, that bang trims are FREE!!!! AND a complimentary 15 min. appointment, that I can book at any time. Seriously Why did it take two appointments, a phone conversation, and $400 later, to tell me that? I could have just booked a bang trim at any time. Sarah never once told me, the bang trims were complimentary. Not the first time and not through the entire ordeal. Because that's what it's been, an ordeal. Sarah instead encouraged me to book another $90 haircut. I won't be going back, to Epoch, with the Epochally bad service. Pro tip: If someone drops $270 on their hair, you should ask them, how was their service and if they want to book their next appointment. PERIOD. There is too much competition, to not care about CLIENT RETENTION. I made the appointment, because, I have a 2 day event, and I will be pinning my hair back for that event. Lesson learned. I'll never let a stylist squeeze me in, for an expensive and elaborate service again. I try not to feel discriminated against, because it's tiresome and it hurts but that's exactly how Epoch Salon made me feel. Hope you never make someone feel like this again. read more

I started coming here once I moved permanently to the city in 2014 and it has been my absolute favorite salon ever since. The space has high ceilings and beautiful natural lighting. It is gorgeous. It's always kept super clean and neat. Beth definitely saved my hair in the beginning and has been taking great care of it ever since. She is really understanding and open to your ideas and look. She is super precise and careful when dying and cutting. She is really personal and sweet. Madelaine is such a sweetheart too! Everyone who works here has been nothing but nice to me. I came in a month ago for a long bob cut and soft balayage on my dark brown hair. First of, when i entered, the reception lady was very nice and friendly. She asked me to fill in a form with my contact and HAIR info (whether it was dyed before, how i take care of it, what i wanted to achieve that day, etc). My hair stylist and colorist was Leslie and I was super happy with how everything turned out. She very attentive, listened to all my concerns and was very patient with my instructions. I showed her what seemed to be a 100 pictures of how i wanted my hair to look and she did it perfectly: great cut, no brassiness in my hair and very soft caramel highlights. First review is for Sara who gave me the best haircut I have ever received - I have gotten so many compliments so far! She is seriously a master at what she does! Second is for the salon itself who has made it apparent that customer service is their number one priority. After checking out, they send you an email thanking you for coming to the salon and offering that if for any reason you are unsatisfied that they would be happy to address. I was obviously more than satisfied, but just the point that they proactively offer this means a lot as a client. Cannot recommend enough! read more
