I've heard a lot of hype around the hot bar at Erewhon, so I wanted to give it a try. Honestly it was restaurant quality food and I would definitely come back! I'm obsessed that everything is organic. Some highlights: the broccolini was cooked just tender and had a nice bite to it, and the kale salad was well balanced. My favorite was the Buffalo cauliflower because it was crispy but not greasy. The only downside is the price point because this was restaurant quality food and the price followed. read more

The most overrated grocery mart on the planet. I have purchased fruit and vegetables there, and it is like a rollercoaster. One week the green beans are sweet and crispy, the next flavorless and flabby. The strawberries are excellent, but the organic peaches I bought were mealy and tasted like potatoes. For the sky high prices they charge I expect consistent, excellent quality. I don't shop there anymore. Ralphs has better stuff and the prices are much lower. The best market to go to for your daily grocery shopping. This place is very neat, organized, and clean. I always enjoy getting fresh vegetables and detox juices from here. I have also tried the mushroom pizza and it tasted so fresh and delicious. All the employees are very kind and helpful. My mentor helped create these grocery stores the Kushi's. My alkaline water, sea moss, organic shampoo, and charcoal lemonade is just perfect. I know how to grocery shop since I'm macro I obsess over food very closely no sugar or additives and follow a very healthy routine better than 99% of the population. I mostly don't even eat packaged foods it's all made from scratch. The people who complain about prices must not value their health. My health is my greatest value in life I can't even find anyone who doesn't take one pill except myself. I spend thousands on food and anything to do with health related things weekly. I use food as medicine while everyone else actually just uses well toxic medicine is how they live while I eat living foods that nourish they eat trash and need medicine to survive. Everyone should be buying the sea moss drinks and pure sea moss from here I literally can't stop having it. I ate half the jar when I was supposed to have just 2tbl spoons. While everyone else is eating jam, sugar, and colored artificial foods I'm eating things that come from the earth. This Erewhon turned me off from all the other stores. It was my first time going to one and maybe a minute after I entered I had someone stop and ask if I needed help, which I thought was nice. However, a minute after that I saw the tall white male manager push past every other customer, come straight to me, and ask pretty aggressively what I'm looking for. I'm a small, brown (Iranian) girl, I thought dressed fine, but it was a clear "I don't trust you because of my implicit bias". I was pretty appalled and he kept pressing, and I said I just wanted to look around. I ended up leaving the store. I did not appreciate the racial profiling and that manager needs some implicit bias training. read more

I'm not sure how I would even rate this place. On one hand it's SO SERIOUS about the food it sells. It's not really about the provenance of the food taken to extremes, as in the satirical show Portlandia, but really about how the intake of the right foods will yield the right results in a person. On the other hand it's also a temple of extreme privilege. It doesn't matter how far this food needs to travel or from what indigenous people you have to take the limited supply of a certain item, it's here for you so that you can consume it and make you feel better. To go along with that concept, I saw a container of fried kale. I know that kale isn't a item in limited quantities. But there was no price on this container or any of it's brethren fried kale containers on the same display table. There was no price on the display table either. I don't know, maybe if you download an app it'll read a QR code or something, but it also applied to other ready-to-eat items I saw such "raw key lime pie". I mean, imagine not having to worry about the price before buying something and then consuming it. It was an interesting and enlightening anthropological field trip but I'm pretty sure I won't be re-visiting unless I need Kourtney Kardashian's special cleansing smoothie (a thing there) or some obscure bone broth. read more

Cheese pizza was okay, not enough tomato sauce and very cheese dense but a decent deal for $6. I've been to this location a couple times and I like their juices. I will say that it takes a while and it's not cheap so I would recommend ordering it first and doing your shopping. The store is small and I'd say even the parking although you get It for free in their parking lot with a time limit is also pretty tight as well. read more

I went to this store with high expectations. Unfortunately they were not met. I decided to stop by their cafe and get a juice. There was one other person waiting for their order- it was not busy. There were 11 people working behind the counter in the cafe. I ordered. 10 minutes later I was still waiting for my juice. I asked if they knew how much longer it would be and was told another 5-10 min. So 20 min to press a juice when they aren't busy and there are 11 people working/hanging out and talking... so don't expect anything quickly. The juice itself was average. I got the beet one (which they charged me a dollar more than what was on the menu and I was told they didn't know why there was a discrepancy, that's just what the computer says now). They had too much ginger in it which overpowered the subtle beet and carrot juices. While waiting the 20 min it took to make an average juice, I asked if they had wifi as my phone didn't have service. I was told they didn't. So all in all a pretty disappointing experience, at least with the cafe. Juice was average, wait was ridiculously long, employees weren't friendly, and all around not great vibes. I know some people like this place but I'm assuming it isn't for the service or the juice. There are plenty of overpriced bougie grocery stores and food places in LA. I'd choose a different one. read more

Erewhon Market's arrival to Santa Monica has been a game changer! The product selection, produce, fish and meat are all top notch, but what really sets this Erewhon apart from all others I've visited and every other market in the area is the prepared food and catering! The food here is next level! There is clearly a new chef in town!!! The salads, fish & meat dishes, are created with skill and the flare of someone who loves food and flavors!! Today, my family used Erewhon to cater our Father's Day party! We ordered a sushi platter and two salads!!! It was amazing!!! Today is a Sunday, and the tuna & salmon were pristine!!! There's one company that makes sushi with slight variations depending on theme of each market. I've never had such a bad experience. I got curb side pick up from erewhon and majority of my items I received were damaged/ rotten. I reached out to erewhon via Instagram and the manager only offered a $15 gift card. Mind you I spent $200 there and he wasn't even willing to refund me for the damaged items. Everything is so good. The sweet potatoes are always exceptional but I have had almost everything in the hot and cold case now and a majority of the packed salads - I have no complaints, everything is delicious. Sure it's pricey, but it's LA and it's Erewhon, so it's ok. Also the staff is always so so nice. And the outdoor area is perfect for lunch or working with your laptop - they have WiFi too. And complimentary valet where they somehow always seem to have free drinks and snacks. Santa Monica is my favorite Erewhon location. read more

Does food taste better when it cost three times as much? I don't think so, but the place was packed and the pressed juice was flowing! The store design and layout is terrific with not even a turnip out of place. The hot food and salad bar looks inviting and there was no lack of action in that area. Do I think it's too expensive, yes. But the rest of Samo either disagrees or doesn't care. I'm impressed with what they did with such a small space and love the arrangement. The food looks inviting and fresh. There's a terrific outdoor seating area as you walk in from the front. This place is my new found love. I have lived in Santa Monica/Los Angeles area before but did not know this place existed. This place has changed my life. I can never go and leave with only the things on my list. I always end up getting just about everything. Lol and I do not go hungry! I did and I couldn't even wait to get home to try the food I got from the cafe/made food line. The Mac n cheese is amazing. It's my favorite. But I love everything they have. If I had a negative experience, I usually don't post it on Yelp. I made an exception. Came today to get bread - waited for almost 1 hour! Totally very unorganized store! They are letting 1 person inside, even if 5-6 got out. Inside wss almost empty!! I understand it's pandemic, but other stores are much smaller and way better organized to serve their customers. Besides an hour wait, very unprofessional and rude customer service!!! I really get it- circumstances are effecting us all in every aspect of our life, but still not an excuse for a poor attitude. I don't want to get into details, I am sure the guy had a bad day- it's chaotic times. Must be stressful working here as well. Spoke with the manager, I think he didn't even cared what bothered me. It doesn't matter- my money is still green. I guess, it's pretty obvious what the store policy actually is: 'We only care about your money, the rest- we don't take it seriously.' While I was waiting in front of the door, I noticed that delivery workers are not on proper distance. They were close to each other. Some of them not wearing a mask. Mandatory rules- not same for everyone! Most staff members are not smiling, maybe because they were not treated properly. Seems like that no one is actually happy to work here. I know exactly how customer service works, I worked in restaurants in college, but here - not sure what to think. I am sure there are some nice staff members. No one to ask me how is my day going? Huh. Something! I went to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's- very charming and polite personal. They always welcome me with smile and positive attitude-- even in this changing times! His actions took food from my childrens mouth. He had no interest in coming to resolution and instead just punished me for one day of not being my best. I think for the love of humanity that this overly expensive nightmare of a store should close permanently. If two carts going in opposing directions happen to be in the same aisle, then one person has to back all the way out for the other person to pass by them. Talk about inefficient. On top of that, the employees are constantly having to answer a series of questions as to where the items are. This is because the founder of Erewhon decided that signs above the aisles that describe what is in the aisles are a thing of the past. And my guess is that this idiot is trying to foster community and make shopping an adventure by eliminating such signs. The employees truly suffer for it. Who would want to answer questions all day about where items are when they are trying to stock the shelves or do other tasks? It's terribly annoying. Not that I'm very sorry for the employees, who are so invested in chasing the bag that they would rather blame the customers for their plight than dare to think of finding a job somewhere else. I've never dealt with a more toxic group of grocery store employees, except maybe the Ralphs on Culver center drive in Culver City. And that's saying quite a lot. It's hard to describe the passive aggressive and blame-filled conversation I overheard today, so I'll just leave it at that. 3 Stars for the quality and selection of food. This store is definitely more expensive than Whole Foods and Bristol Farms. The store is appealing. I spent $33 at the cafe for a $16.99 smoothie and 2 pastries. Another $35 for a sushi and a couple of snacks. I would not come here again, once was enough, not worth the money. Erewhon is a very upscale grocery store that has a sophisticated, photogenic array of health products and prepared foods. I think it's a great place to have a light, nutritious lunch or an occasional shop every now-and-then. With that being said, making EM a part of your everyday grocery shopping is impractical given its price points and the fact that the other major grocery chains in the area (Amazon, Trader Joes, Whole Foods) are increasingly getting better at offering nearly identical products for a lot less. On one hand, if you were to solely purchase EM's prepared foods, I suppose you could justify the cost with the amount of time you save in cooking and cleaning in addition to potential dietary benefits but there are few people who would be willing to shell out so much on a health food store. PROS: - EM has very impressive-looking items ranging from paleo desserts that look like they were handcrafted to homemade soups packaged in mason jars. The store and its products have an appealing aesthetic. - Their prepared foods, even their cut fruits, whilst expensive, are delicious. Everything was tasty---even the humblest of their vegetable sides. - I found the staff at this location to be friendly, courteous, and professional from the register to the cafe. They were quite helpful and patient with me at the food counter since it was my first time there and I didn't know how the ordering system worked. CONS: - Although it is great that EM has a parking lot, it is limited and during a busy day, the parking situation can quickly deteriorate into a lot of frustrated drivers and pedestrians. The lot is small with only one main exit and entrance so backing out with your vehicle is particularly difficult in addition to the higher risk of engaging with oncoming traffic from both directions. - As noted by many, pricing is high and they do not make finding the actual price tags easy. You have to really look at the item on the bottom or side to find a tag to see what the actual cost is. And lastly, this is not a particularly important aspect but, the store's atmosphere contributed to my experience here as well. I felt that a lot of the shoppers at EM are not particularly nice to themselves, each other, or the store's staff. To me, it seemed particularly acute, more so than other grocery stores. There were people who would cut through the queues so they could quickly grab their lunch to return to their office without caring or noticing how uncourteous they were being. Others who would bump their shopping carts into one another without even an apology and drivers who, in a mad dash to get a space, would almost hit people who were returning to their cars. To sum it up, this is not a store where you are going to have a positive or happy experience whilst shopping. read more

First off, extremely overpriced. The best deals are at least 20% more than their competitors. Second attitude, the staff exudes a holier than thou attitude with a hipster uniform.
