This place had really good pizza and huge servings. I think a slice was like 4$, but it was also like my face and a half. I think it is 1/4 of a pizza. I got normal cheese and was very satisfied. The thin crust allows your bites to be full of flavor and not waste the stomach space on bread. It is small so be ready to either squish or get it to-go. The service is also really great. The guys serving us were friendly and conversational and cleaned our table for us. Just finished eating a tiny $20 lobster roll and decided that, since I'm in the Italian North End, I should try a slice of pizza. Turn to Yelp to find a place that sells pizza by the slice and I find Ernesto's right next door. I walk up to the counter and start scanning the various pizzas that are in the display. I see the first pizza and it looks like they didn't cut the slices properly. Then I realize that all the pizzas are cut that way. The slices are HUGE...basically double the size of most pizza places. I settled on the sausage, pepperoni, and hamburger (or meatball?) pizza. The pizza didn't disappoint. Hot, crisp, and very tasty. Given the ginormous size of the slice, it was a great deal at $5.50. While standing at the counter, I saw the ad for Italian rice balls. I don't recall ever having tried one before so I ordered one with spinach. I was a bit surprised that it cost $6 but since I've never had it before, I have no idea if that was a good price or not. The person behind the counter asked if I wanted the tomato sauce and I responded affirmatively. I expected to get a rice ball on a plate with sauce on top. Instead, I got a container with what appeared to be a tomato soup. I wasn't sure if it was the correct order so I took it back to my table and used the spoon to dig around. Sure enough, a rice ball lay at the bottom. The dish was very good . The rice ball was still crunchy on the outside even though it was sitting in tomato sauce. And the sauce itself tasted really good. I'm sure there are many good pizza places in the neighborhood but I've only tried Ernesto's. The food was good enough such that when I am in the area again looking for pizza, I'd just go to Ernesto's rather than risk trying another place. read more

Good option for pizza if Regina's around the corner is too crowded. Yes, as others have said, one slice is really two regular slices or a 1/4 of a pie. We got one chicken sausage and broccoli (white style) and one sausage and ricotta. Both slices were warmed up before eating. The chicken and broccoli had a nice mix of toppings and cheese. I like white style, no red sauce, so it was ok for me. Others might find in bland. The sausage and ricotta was also good and the sauce wasn't over powering. The only disadvantage to getting such big slices is that you can't try two different styles. You would have to share with someone else and hope you both agree on which to get. read more

When you look for North End pizza your google search might automatically direct you to Regina's Pizzeria, but don't let the popular restaurant's notoriety distract you from the gem that is Ernesto's. If you're looking for a great slice with the right amount of "flop" and sauce, this is your spot. I had the eggplant and ricotta slice, which is really a quarter of a pie. The cheese was the star, it truly added to the slice. The eggplant was good, but didn't add much to the flavor profile (but when really does eggplant ever?). There were so many options that I didn't try and I didn't snag a beer/wine. Would definitely return to try another and grab a drink. There's nothing complicated about their pizza. Ernesto's pizza crust is perfectly imperfect with its bubbled edges and small burnt spots. The toppings are mostly no frills, but will have you thinking, "Why don't ALL pizza joints have these toppings?" Fried eggplant, ricotta, fresh italian sausage, fresh garlic - the pizzas are allowed to be simple because their flavor speaks through the quality of the ingredients. I hate you all for blowing the cover off of this one. Just kidding! (sort of) I'm from NY and a self-anointed foodie. And this is the best pizza in Boston. Take that as you will. Order a full pie rather than getting a few slices reheated. The crust is better that way. In my relationship, I'm usually the one getting all of the crazy toppings and my bf getting the plain cheese; At Ernesto's, we always get a full cheese pizza. There is no need for fancy toppings to make up for a lack-luster pizza. A sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes, and it is perfection. The crust is sturdy, chewy, relatively thin, and yet SO LIGHT. It isn't doughy or dense - just magically toothsome. They usually have a great deal going - $20 for a full cheese pizza and a pitcher of draft beer. Can't go wrong with that. They recently took down their Pizza sign/shingle, so just look for it three storefronts past Neptune Oyster. Tasty pizza quarters. Ernesto's is a small spot with a few tables and a counter full of different pizzas. The smallest unit you can order here is actually a quarter of a pie or two slices. Not sure if it's a good thing though, it means you can try less options and you are still paying for both. Some of the combinations are very interesting, such as their breaded eggplant plus ricotta pizza. I also enjoyed the pepperoni, but the veggie had way to much on it which weighed it down with too much moisture. The dough is good, with just enough chewiness. My biggest gripe is that I could tell that the pizza lost a bit because it was reheated and not freshly baked. Worth a visit for some quick and casual pizza. If you can, rally a group of friends so you can order a couple of fresh pies. read more

SO close to a five-star review, which I never give after one visit. But the pizza is so good, and unbelievably cheap, that they deserve it. Plus the selection of numerous topping combinations ensures that you could come back again and again. We got mushroom/pepperoni and pepperoni/chicken/ricotta slices, plus two drinks for TWELVE DOLLARS. And the slices are immense--two common-sized slices, or one-quarter of a large pie. Seriously, DO NOT order two slices for yourself. They will laugh at you, and then you will die or be forced to throw away delicious pizza. What keeps them from five stars was a minor disaster which we happened to witness as we ate our lunch. Apparently a plumber was upstairs doing some work, and a portion of the Ernesto's ceiling collapsed, sending water dripping down over the pizza cases (but not harming the pizza, thank goodness). This caused an explosion of activity and cursing from the various members of Ernesto's ownership family. Now, we thought that all of this was pretty funny, but it got even better when some poor customer wandered into this scene, stood there for a few minutes observing all this chaos, then meekly asked, "So...can I get some pizza?" I nearly busted a gut. What a punchline. This place has posted up numerous accolades from various sources, including Yelp, and they deserve them. Business types, yuppies, hipsters, old-school neighborhood denizens--all were customers during our half-hour stay. When I got to North Side of Boston, I decided to see if there were any close competitors to Regina's. I found Ernesto's after talking to some locals. What a great recommendation from the locals. The pizza was delicious. I ordered a whole pizza pie of Ernestos and it was huge!!! Probably the biggest pizza I've seen in a long time. The pizza was perfect; toppings, cheese and crust ratio. Ernesto's is a great local favorite where you can get unique combinations with a paupers paycheck. While the "$5 a slice" price tag may seem like a stretch to be considered a bargain meal, you actually you get two large slices (a quarter of a pie equivalent). A complete steal if you ask me, but worthless if it tastes like cardboard. But rest assured as the taste is just as good as the price. They've also won numerous awards ranging from Best of Boston to Zagat's list and of course my stamp of approval. So you're good to go, though you might have to put up a good fight to get the Chicken Bacon Ranch pizza, which is a hometown favorite and for good reason. The chese is perfectly ooey-goey, the crust crisp with the right amount of chew, and the combination of chicken, bacon, and ranch together make this an epic pizza. Yum, where else can you get a quarter of a large pizza for $4-5 in the north end. Our usual go to place is Umberto's in allston but our friends wanted to give this place a try. When you walk into this cozy place, the first thing that draws your eyes is the refrigerated case with the large variety of pizzas. Either you (1) pick one of these slices or (2) order a whole pie. As a large group we went with option 2 and ordered a half veg half cheese pizza. Boy, did it look good when it came out of the oven. The vegetables were pilled on the pizza. Are you looking for a quick, simple and tasty slice of pizza at a reasonable price that will fill up your hungry stomach? Well, if you are in the Italian-American neighborhood of the North End in the somewhat decent city of Boston, this place has your answer. The pizza portions here are great. The price of one slice is a little high at less than $5, but a slice is fairly big. I would say that the dimensions are almost 30 cm of width using really rough estimates. A slice is definitely more than 15% but less than 25% of a regular large pizza pie itself made at this place. As for the taste, I really liked the thin crust, there's a nice light crisp on the outside and a soft chewiness on the inside. The first time I came here, I got a pizza with pepperoni, peppers, mushrooms, onions, olives and sausage. The toppings were really good, but needed to be warmer. If you are looking for a very American slice of pizza, the Buffalo Chicken is actually a great choice. The flavor does not have too much spice, and the chicken is actually juicy and tender, as if they bought raw chicken from the supermarket and cooked it in an oven. Since it is a really greasy and oily pizza, I would fold my pizza in half and eat it like a sandwich, and I would have a good amount of napkins. One slice of pizza from this place should be enough to fill up the stomach of a very hungry man, with some room left for a small dessert such as a couple of cannoli. Interior is not very impressive, but definitely not as gritty compared to some of the grittiest restaurants in Boston. There's only a few simple tables, and it feels like you are walking into a plebeian, old fashioned, Italian American pizza place from the 1980s to the 1990s in either New York City or Northern New Jersey, even though the pizza they serve here is made in Boston, not in NY or in NJ. One great advantage this place has is that they actually serve beer if you really want to complement your pizza, such as the plebeian and ubiquitous Budweiser or the somewhat sophisticated but commercially promoted Heineken. Overall, this is a great choice for some good pizza, and they can get the job done really well. If you are looking for some of the best pizza in the somewhat decent city of Boston, this may not be the best choice, but it is definitely a great choice, especially if you are not willing to spend more than $5 to get your stomach full and if you want get some beer with the pizza as well. read more

This place was so so good. I knew from reading the reviews that if you order one "slice", you actually get two slices. Another thing to add is that each of the slices themselves are really big as well, so be prepared. One thing I would suggest is to have labels for the pizzas in the case. I know you can always ask, or physically see what kind of toppings the pizza has, but it would save some time if the customer could just see what his/her options are. Each and every one of them looked like triangular masterpieces. Plus, you only need one slice... because Ernesto's practices a new and improved type of math where 1 actually equals 2. Yes, two rather large slices make up just one; inspiring stuff. While a slice that large may lead you to believe the pizza will be thin and charred, i.e. New York style, it most certainly is not. Much to my delight, the crust was still soft and plump, and the plentiful helping of toppings ensure you get the extra flavors you crave. I will vouch that the ricotta and eggplant is phenomenal. Very tasty pizza!! They have original cheese as well as pepperoni. If you want to be daring, they have other interesting flavors. We tried the BBQ chicken (sweet taste from the BBQ if you like that), pepperoni, and the pepperoni ricotta cheese. The pepperoni and ricotta was my favorite. Everytime somebody says "where should I go for pizza in the North End?" I say Ernestos. Are there other, more famous places to go? Yes. Are there lovelier places to dine? Yes. But if you just want pizza, and pizza is what you want, again, I say Ernestos. I'm not going to get in to the nitty gritty of the deliciousness of this pizza or the ampleness of the portions. It's delicious and ample, that's all you need to know. Okay, maybe you need one more thing. Yes, it's a super casual dining type of place and it looks like every other place with the same kind of pizza, sandwich type offerings (except maybe more cramped and don't even THINK of driving there), but don't be fooled. I tried a slice of Old School with tomato slices, basil and romano and it got the job done nicely.
