3.29.24 I was really really excited to try this place. And I was really excited from afar until I finally went here. I must have gotten them on a couple of their worst days/nights when they faulted. The only food I've tried here so far has been their meatball parm grinders. The service at the counter was the usual that you expect. Nothing outstanding but nothing awful either. The plus is that they carry the awesome foxon park soda. Birch beer is the fav. The windows are nicely decorated that you can see from outside easily viewable. They were a swing and a huge miss. I can say without exaggeration that I have never had or experienced crunchy meatballs until I ate here. I was shocked at how not good the grinder was and some of it had crunchy meatballs. All of the meatballs were hard but some were crunchy which was so odd and bizarre for me. I have heard so many good things about this place and I continue to hear more good lately. Especially from Suzanne who raves about this place. I'll be back to try to get them on their usual good day. Looking forward to better food next time around. read more

Dayton Street Apizza was a-ok. We ordered for dine in and we were able to grab a table easily. There are only a few tables inside, but it wasn't busy. We tried the garlic bread, cheese pizza, and the New Haven Fresh Clam pizza. The clam pizza comes with mozzarella and garlic on an olive oil base. They also provided a side of lemon. It was very tasty! The cheese pizza was fine. The crust is on the thin and crispy side. Service was okay, they brought our pizza out. Not a bad place to stop, but I don't know that I would return. read more

Surprisingly good. Never been here before and was really pleased.. that being said, it's too pricey. If you're in New Haven, you probably know pizza is a thing. The usual places you'd go also charge an arm and a leg, but those are the very well known places. While the pizza is good, I can't say this is comparable to that of the New Haven pizza giants. Place was clean and the people are super nice. But, I had a small plain cheese and that alone came to $13. Toppings were an extra $2 or so, and just couldn't spend that for a small. The combo apizza here was delicious! It was huge and was plenty for three of us. Generously covered with my favorite toppings including pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions. The crust is baked crisp and I liked that it wasn't overly charred like some other places. A great addition to the New Haven apizza scene. read more

I just called to give Dayton St., Pizza to order dinner and was told the menu I'm looking at is wrong the prices are $10 for all sandwiches and the menu that I'm looking at is not the correct one? Hello everyone; After receiving a message from Dayton Street Apizza's business manager Sara H, I decided to stop in to try their pizza again. My original critique of their pie was about the lack of basil and oregano. Her responds was that "they don't put oregano in their pizza sauce, they have it on the side, this way costumers can put it on themselves." So, to be fair, I decided to stop in again and try Dayton Street pizza one more time adding the oregano. So, I grabbed the oregano shaker on the counter, and you know what... it made a big difference. The dried oregano substantially elevated the pizza ! As a matter of fact; it totally changed the way the sauce tasted. Nonetheless, I still thought the sauce was still very tomatoee, which I liked of course, because it made the pizza taste clean and effervescence. Moreover, the oregano added the herbaceous dynamic needed. So, with that said, I now officially have Dayton Street Apizza on my top ten best pizzas list. So, thanks Sara H for pointing out how to properly eat a Dayton Street pizza. And I'll reiterate, the sausage was top quality. The crust was crispy and spot on delicious, and this time they piled on the motz the way I like it. So, stop in, and grab a pizza. This spot is one of the best New Haven has to offer, and make sure Dayton Street is one of your destination stops on the New Haven pizza tour when visiting. Dayton Street Apizza is hard to score. The crust was great, crispy and flavorful, but they don't load a lot of cheese on the pie, all though the sausage is of a good quality. This is decent pizza, it's not "apizza." Please don't order a pizza here expecting New Haven style pizza. This is a doughy, chewy crust. Not the thin, charred crust from the historic "apizza" ovens. We recently had an issue with an online order, so I would recommend ordering from them directly. They replaced our pizza after we returned our original pizza. I called tonight for a delivery and spoke to a young woman on the phone and placed my order. She asked me if I would like to leave a tip for the driver and I said sure, you can add $2 for a tip after realizing that a simple pasta dish and stuffed bread would cost over $33 which are insanely high prices to begin with. Her response was "Wow" and then proceeded to hang up on me. I was so taken aback by her rudeness that I decided I didn't want to give this establishment my business so I called back. When I told her that I wanted to cancel my order because she was so rude she said "Yup, that's fine and hung up on me for the second time". I'm from out of town so Im one and done. The pizza was jusr average. I paid $30 for a large meat eaters which consisted of pepperoni, sausage and bacon. The portions were VERY small and the cheese was a low quality menu item. I also noted how incredibly thin the pizza was. I guess that's common for the area? I will say the taste wasn't bad. I also ordered for a pickup time of 6:40 pm. It was ready at 7:10 pm. I even ordered an hour earlier. Busy night? I've lived in New Haven for 23 years. Went to Hopkins during highschool, which happens to be a stones throw away from Dayton Street Apizza. Their margherita pizza is very unique, in that it is topped with entire halves of plum tomatoes. It sounds like a crazy idea, but it is well worth the experience. Shame that they dont have any photos of their delicious margherita pizza on this site. 10/10 better than Sallys, Pepes, Bar, Modern, etc. read more

The pizza was great unfortunately I ordered the worst sausage grinder imaginable, completely inedible. I originally asked the a sausage parmigiana grinder. The person said peppers and onions? I responded yes assuming that it would be added to the grinder. To my disappointment it was simply dry ground up sausage with some peppers and barely present onions. Lots on the menu but we were here for pizza. They must do a crazy delivery business judging by the delivery cars queued up in the lot.. if I were in delivery range this would probably be who I called when I was in a Howard Hughes mood. The small cheese pizza we had was good, crust wasnt really charred like I hoped it would be, by new haven standards it would be called undercooked, but still it was nice and thin and crisp. The tomato sauce was more like fine crushed tomatos, plain and simple with a nice freshness. cheese was also very good on the pie. not too much. not too little. not too greasy. overall this was a decent pie and it is good to know Dayton Street Apizza is here and to have one more pizza option in the area. The first time I go to a pizza place to try it out I always get a half plain half pepperoni as my test pie. This one passed with flying colors. There was not a lot of grease which you usually expect with pepperoni which was a big plus for me. The crust was crisp and had excellent flavor with minimal soot on the bottom of the pie. Dayton Street Apizza is actual proof that you don't need a coal oven or a fancy smanchy italian-made wood oven to make excellent pizza. Their pizza makers make due with ordinary gas ovens. And yet their pizza has that slightly charred crust which is famous in New Haven pizza. Kudos to them for that. They get it, when it comes to charred crust. The only thing I don't like is that the pizza does not carry much bang for your buck. Their small size pizza costs $10 and it's kinda wimpy in weight. I ordered grinders and wings over the phone to pick up on my way home. I ordered a meatball grinder sans sauce with lettuce tomato and onions, BBQ wings and another grinder for my lunch companion. The wings were so-so. Deep fried, over sauced and just ok. My meatball grinder was as ordered however the meatballs had clearly been sitting in sauce before being put on my sandwich. Had I known that I would have altered my order. The woman working the register however was a delight! She was personable and genuinely friendly enough so to overlook the faux pas on my meatball sub. Dayton St has delivered to my house before (during the pandemic). We're a 7 minute drive, closer than most of New Haven, and their website proudly states they deliver to New Haven. When we plug in our address on Door Dash, it says Dayton St will deliver. But tonight on the phone, we were told they don't deliver to our address, and they abruptly hung up.
