Besties from NYC were visiting and wanted to do an escape room, so we headed over to Escape Room LA for the Black Dragon Room! We were met by Gelly who introduced us to the room and they were incredible! Gelly made sure to stick to the script and it really felt like she was an actress. 10/10 for her performance, she deserved an Oscar lol. There was the 4 of us in this room and we were quite nervous that we might not be able to finish/escape the room, but we finished with 7 minutes to spare! There were times where we needed some extra help and we loved how Gelly gave us hints and not a whole answer because it left us to figuring out her hints! Overall, it was a fun time and it had us wanting to come back to do more! Will definitely bring friends here to try out the other escape rooms :) read more

I came on a Tuesday night and was able to find street parking right in front of the street. Its only street parking and this is on a one way street, so be careful. They have 3 puzzles on the wall that you can win a prize! It was fun while you are waiting for your group to show. We did the Here Kitty Kitty room. I must say that out of 20 escape rooms ive done, this one had so many puzzles! One was really tough because we werent familiar with it. I dont want to give a lot away, but you will know when you get there! Another Puzzle got stuck, but luckily the game master Sasha, was with us in the room to provide assistance. We had 6 people and finished with 7 minutes to spare! It was very fun and we all had a blast! read more

We came back to try Black Dragon, and it exceeded our expectations. The experience was completely different from the Pyramid. Our game master made a difference in the experience as well. We felt she stepped in at just the right moments, and it was a great balance between guiding us and letting us figure out the puzzle ourselves. Her energy and role playing enhanced the experience and we would definitely ask for her again. The room itself was unique with impressive attention to detail in both design and decor. Everything felt thoughtfully designed, and all the puzzles were working. At the end, she helped us take photos in different rooms. We're glad we gave this place another shot. The Black Dragon was so much fun! I've played rooms with similar themes, but this room had enough differences to still be entertaining. A few of the puzzles were a little underwhelming and not super clear, but most of the puzzles were great! The ambiance, decor, and props were very on brand and made the room super immersive. The objective was fun, the ending was super cute, and the game master was wonderful! We were a little late because of traffic and parking, but they were very accommodating and we still had enough time to escape! Escape room LA has some pretty solid and fun rooms now a days. I would say they have improved over time. I enjoyed their Black Dragon room - it's a bigger space and could hold a larger group, maybe up to 6 would be good. Most recently I did their Here, Kitty Kitty were is a hilarious Cat lady house where you are helping find her Cat so she can go to Bingo. The story, design, and kookiness were perfect. It's a smaller room so I'd say 4 tops before it starts to get too crowded. Overall a fun place to spend an hour. They have a helper in the room, so if you are newer maybe let them know so they can chime in more. For vets, maybe let them know you aren't interested in hints unless you ask. Both rooms were finished with quite a bit of time to spare but my friends and I have done a lot of escape rooms. read more

Came here for my birthday and my group and I had so much fun! We played the Black Dragon puzzle, set in the mid 1900s of Hong Kong. The puzzles were unique and fun; it had a good mix of brain teasers, pattern recognition, and physical movement. The variety, combined with the setting, made it engaging and enjoyable! We were offered help once or twice, but my group managed to solve it pretty quickly! The staff was very nice and courteous. They seemed understaffed that day as nobody was at the counter at first, and someone hurriedly came by, apologized to us and said they'd get to us very soon. We came early so that was understandable. Did Atlantis as a team building exercise for work. The door was easily able to be pushed open for the first room and our attendant yelled at one of our team for doing something that everyone would do in an escape room which is look for ways to open the door and a simple push of the door and it opened by accident. From there the attendant we felt continued to give a bad attitude towards asking for assistance throughout the game. Passive aggressive statements and guidance such as "let's see how you can take the 4 pieces and solve the puzzle, I have no doubt you're smart enough to do that". Had a blast! Hands down best escape room we have all been to. Several of us have been to many all over LA, but this one is our favorite. When you walk in, they have some pre-activities that really help you get mentally ready for the inside game. Loved this! If you figure out the pre-puzzles, you get the code to unlock a free LA escapes pin. We did the Black Dragon room, as some people in the group are from Hong Kong. We went in with a group of 9, and we were all very entertained. There was so many puzzles of all levels and the decor was insane! Been to several escape rooms, this was more high tech, and loved that there was a person who acts and stays with you in case you need help. The person stays in character too, which was so hilarious. Other escape room companies use the ipad or talk to you via speaker for hints of help, but I like the live person way better as it makes the room become more alive! I honestly can't wait to come back. We came here for a birthday and want to go back for the next birthday. It will be hard to want to try other escape companies after this one because this one was too good. I would say a group of 4-6 is ideal, so everyone can try out all the puzzles. Parking was challenging because it is in downtown LA, but in reality, it only took us 10 minutes to find parking. If you want to make it even easier for you, just pay for a parking garage. read more

I played my first escape room here back in 2016 so I thought it would be full circle to play my 50th escape room here. I've played all of their rooms: The Detective (no longer running), The Pyramid, Atlantis, and Black Dragon. Black Dragon Review: I was in the promo video for Black Dragon last year so I came back with two friends to finally play the room. Our game master was nice but seemed inexperienced. We explained that we wanted to be paced and to escape so if she saw us struggling, she could give us clues. We got stuck after the first room and I was in one room waving my hands and asking for a clue and we never got any help. Only when we were down to three minutes did she come around and try to give us a clue but it was too late. We were two puzzles away from finishing when time ran out. It was really disappointing. So I'll say the experience was subpar but the set and puzzles were done well. Step into 1960's Hong Kong and stop the black triad gang from taking over the city. When you enter the first restaurant, you start by eating real fortune cookies and piecing together clues from inside them. The set is massive so a large group will help divide and conquer. There are a wide variety of puzzles that involve staying on your toes (literally). Keep your eyes peeled and read wisely. Atlantis Review: Played for my birthday in 2023. I had won a giveaway on instagram (follow them on social media because they do have promos there) and was able to play for a discounted rate. The set, like all of their sets, was impressive. Some puzzles were more straightforward than others. A few of the puzzles didn't work even when solved correctly so an employee was in the room to make sure we were able to progress. We escaped. Pyramid Review: Played this room in 2019 on a date. We also got paired with people we didn't know but they were a great group of people. The room was really fun and had some theatrical reveals. We escaped. The Detective Review: Played in 2016. I was put with a large birthday party. It was hard, very traditional puzzles, and we did not escape. This is my second time coming to Escape Room LA (Escape Room #46) - had an amazing first experience with Atlantis and now came back to try The Pyramid with some friends! It's known to be their hardest escape room, altho imo Atlantis was harder (to be fair I did have a smaller group then). For us, 6 people was perfect as we split up into two teams of 3 when the puzzles started to accumulate. Like Atlantis, The Pyramid is a super immersive adventure with such amazing attention-to-detail, everything from sounds to lighting to room design. I do wonder if they don't have a timer in the room on purpose, but it would have been nice to know how much time we had left - alas we escaped in 43 minutes :D Our host Jelly was also super amazing and made for an enriching escape experience. I love the ambiance of this escape room. The decor really feels like you are in the urban streets of Hong Kong. The puzzles are intricate and multifaceted making for a fun and unique experience. The only draw back is that some of the lock boxes were faulty and we managed to skip two puzzles without even knowing. When you hear of a city where you have to watch your feet so you don't step on anything rank, hold your nose so it is not assaulted by the pervasive stench, and stay far from walls and windows so you don't touch anything grimy, you may think of Downtown LA ... and you would be right! But it also describes 1965 Hong Kong / Kowloon, which is where we enjoyed our latest five-star escape room. You might say our immersive experience started the minute we turned off the freeway - instead of opium and incense, there was pot, pot and more pot coming through the vents in our car, wound up as our windows were ... Fortunately, our game, booked for Chinese New Year, with LA Escape being the only company we found that had a Chinese theme, took place on a weekday, during working hours, and parking was plentiful. We had a bit of a run looking for the attendant, who wanted a cash payment of $10/= (all day, so there's plenty of time to check out other fun things to do within walking distance), but we had already Venmo-ed the app, so after he took a picture of our car, and we took our ussie with Hopare's untitled mural, we headed down the ramp to ... Civil Coffee, right next door to our 101st escape room! Fortified by Civil Coffee's cappuccino (lift the lid or you would miss the foam art) and right to get to our game, we waited on the sidewalk for a bit before the door was unlocked and we were shown into a comparatively bare lobby, clearly made for big groups, or for the days when you were made to strangers if your group was just a duo, like we usually are. Happily, all rooms are private now, and once in the lobby, and after we had taken a peek at the building-shared single-gender coded restrooms (it did have soap and toilet paper) and completed our waivers in the lobby via hand-held tablet, our game started. LA Escape's Black Dragon escape room is a little different from our usual rooms, because our gamemaster was in the room the entire time. He's not in contact with the players, but functions as a live pop-up hint-giver, so we never had to call out for help more than once. Our game host Sasha stepped into character immediately, and we were introduced to the threat of the triads via black-&-white documentary - amazing production - before entering LA Escape's true-to-life replica of Kowloon's Walled City, complete with its crowded alleyways packed with teahouse, provision and medicine stores, and cramped flats. Our task was to stop the Black Dragon triad gang from taking control of the city, and it started, as all great love affairs do, with food (real food that we ate!) and good fortune. Both the documentary and our tea break were part of the game, and we took a little more time there than we should have, but the music was so transportive, it was easy to get a little lost in time. Black Dragon is what we would call a 2G (Second Generation) room, where cool opening gadgets that worked without locks were paired with conventional locks. Almost all the puzzles were very in-theme and time-cogent, and there were chances to work both individually as well as together. Our favourite puzzle was the big one, which led us from one element of the décor to another, to another. This room took us back in time, from mood to music to design layout. We appreciated that there was no crawling or climbing involved in the game, and we were really lucky in our gamemaster whose job was to help us enjoy the entire experience, not to jump-scare us, although maybe he was there because triad activities were overly rambunctious with earlier groups, perhaps ... LA Escape's transparent pricing is clearly listed on their website, and booking our game was easy and hassle-free. We knew even before booking that it would be more expensive to play as a duo, so we were thrilled that we managed to emerge from our game a tad more proud at the nail-biting time of 58:43, which was clearly recorded on the inconspicuous timer in the alley. It is saying something that we would absolutely do Escape Room LA again, and soon, because DTLA is just not a pleasant hangout ... Black Dragon and Sasha both get solid five stars from us. Since an in-person visit to Hong Kong this year was not in our destiny, we could not have asked for a better start to the Lunar New Year of the Fire Horse! read more

All three rooms were spectacular, definitely worth the drive and cost. They're all fun, immersive adventures with cool puzzles and awesome set design. Production value is off the charts compared to that of other escape rooms in SoCal. There is a staff member with you in each room to monitor your progress and provide hints when needed or requested (they give you your space, don't worry). I'd rank The Pyramid as best room, then Atlantis, then Black Dragon. You gotta be very observant in The Pyramid - look for things, use things, remember things. I really enjoyed the set of Atlantis with all the oceanic decor and undersea vibes. Black Dragon was the largest room and had a memorable little event at the beginning. The Escape Room LA team did a great job of not recycling their own puzzles, so each room is a fresh experience requiring out-of-the-box thinking. Their rooms are very different in theme, flow, and difficulty. Everyone has different preferences, and difficulty level is relevant to your group's strengths. Therefore, I highly recommend doing all three rooms yourself and finding out which is the best. Bring a dependable group of escape room enthusiasts and be prepared to be wowed. Just beware of the janky LA area, jankier LA parking, and the need to wait to be buzzed in for entry (due to being in janky LA haha). I'm really hoping they create a new room or another venue. read more

We had an absolutely amazing experience with the Atlantis puzzle. Definitely a challenging puzzle and we appreciated having a guide with us in the room to nudge or encourage us when we were missing something or heading down the wrong path. We were a group of 8 and all of us were needed, but there is enough space to break up and tackle different areas simultaneously. Without giving any clues away, the squid room was my favorite. My group and I had a disturbing experience at Escape Room LA. From the moment we attempted to exit the escape room, we were treated with suspicion and hostility. As we tried to leave through the lobby, a young white male employee attempted to direct us to exit another way. Only after we explained that we had just completed a game were we allowed into the lobby. I should also mention that the escape room itself was poorly maintained. We were in the Atlantis Room, and several props were already broken when we began. Because the experience is timed, this cost us valuable minutes and significantly impacted our ability to enjoy the game. It was frustrating to be penalized by faulty equipment we had no control over. Once in the lobby, we were completely ignored by the owner--an older white man--who never acknowledged us. I then approached the younger employee to return several puzzle keys that our game attendant had failed to collect. He thanked me and mentioned that most guests walk off with them. But when the owner inspected the items, his demeanor shifted immediately. He accused us of breaking one and became aggressive, insisting we had to pay--despite the fact that we had caused no damage. What followed was an uncomfortable and hostile verbal exchange between the owner and my group. We are four Black women, one Hispanic woman, and one Hispanic man. We strongly believe we were racially profiled and treated with unjust suspicion solely because of our ethnicities. The owner's tone was aggressive, threatening, and completely unprofessional. To make matters worse, we later discovered he had charged my credit card an additional $47 for a small 3x4 piece of wood--without my consent. This charge was unauthorized and completely unjustified. The experience left us shaken, humiliated, and deeply upset. No one should be treated this way--especially not because of the color of their skin. I do not recommend this business to anyone and urge others to think twice before supporting a place that treats paying customers with such blatant disrespect and bias. read more

4 of us did Black Dragon recently. Unfortunately we didn't escape but had a wonderful time trying. Rooms were decorated very realistic, clues little hard but not impossible. Best part coincidentally I'm building a book nook which is from a Hong Kong movie twilight of the warriors walled in. The movie is about Kowloon walled city, same as black dragon. Had an amazing time here with my cousins! We decided on the Black Dragon room. I have done a few escape rooms myself and definitely think this was designed very well. The puzzles were also fairly straightforward, yet still challenging. Some of my cousins had never done one before, but they were still able to easily understand all the rules and flow of the game. The game master was really helpful trying to give us hints and trying to guide us in the right track, but also not being too involved with our thought process. We definitely felt that this escape room was fulfilling and worth it! The tech and effects of the room were done really well and really mimic the streets of Hong Kong. As all of us had parents that were from Hong Kong, we felt that this place really felt close to home. We will definitely try the other rooms next time! read more

A fantastic experience! From the entrance with the courteous lady that also served as the game master, to the decor, and the little puzzles in the lobby (they net you a nice pin if you crack the code!), and then the actual escape room (my group and I tried Black Dragon, it was just 4 of us, and we almost finished it). The decor inside the escape room was quite immersive. The puzzles had the right amount of difficulty and you can always ask for help if needed. The time limit is 50 minutes but with a large group, it should be more than enough to crack the case! We chose to play the Black Drago escape game with the famous Hong Kong historic location - Kowloon Walled City with a total of 10 players. We entered the very first room and listened to the instruction by a staff named Sophia. Sophia helps us through the entire game if we need clues or hints. She is not only a staff, she also has a role to play in the game! This game included 5 rooms/sections. Everyone needs to put their effort into completing the mission. The beautiful props inside the rooms made us feel like we were in the 70's of Hong Kong. Narrow alley with a bunch of bird cages and signs hanging between the apartments. Many traps and puzzles to solve. We had so much fun and completed the mission within 60 minutes. We also got a pin as a souvenir from a bonus game. We want to go back to try the other 2 games in the future - Maya and Atlantis. read more

I wish all escape rooms were designed by this company! I've played 246 escape rooms and Escape Room LA's rooms are my absolute favorite. I've loved every room I've done here and can't recommend them highly enough. Their rooms are jam-packed with challenging puzzles so you'll have no time to waste but the puzzles are so well-designed you won't need hints if you pay attention. They might be on the harder side for beginners, only because there's so much to do. But that's what I love so much about these rooms. Not to mention the immersive and quality theming and visual aspect. Do you get there early because traffic and parking can take longer than expected in LA, but don't let that dissuade you because this place is SOOO worth it! read more

We were so close to escaping! On an early Thursday evening, a group of friends and I decided to check out the escape room at the Westfield Century City. We were a group of 6, which was a fun number. We selected the Depths, which is a submarine scenario. It was a very immersive and well-designed experience, and just challenging enough to where honestly we would've figured it out during the last 5 minutes. Unfortunately, we arrived 10 minutes late, and we didn't get the full time to solve this escape room - which was my one regret. Note that this location is paid parking only (we paid $12). Overall, fun experience to try with a group, or as a corporate bonding experience. read more

We had an AMAZING experience today at The Pyramid! It exceeded my expectations and it's the best escape room I have been to. I guarantee you will not be disappointed if you choose this company. I had family from out of town of different ages ( my sister celebrating her birthday and her teenage son) and it was equally enjoyable to all. The set designs were top notch with multiple different rooms with different types of challenges. I want to give a BIG Thanks to John-the employee who was in charge of the escape room. He is the absolute best- I hope the owners of the company appreciate how incredible he is. Heads up - this 3-star review combines reviews for their 3 escape rooms: Atlantis, The Pyramid and their newest one, Black Dragon. I also did The Detective back in 2015. We were a group of 10 people and we escaped with 0 seconds left I think. I know we had a fun time but because it's been so long and I don't remember the details, I won't include it in this review :) Atlantis 3.75/5 Our group of 3 did Atlantis a while back and wow, what a beautifully designed immersive room!!! Unfortunately, as we progressed, one of the puzzles seemed already "done". We asked the game master if it was supposed to look that way and nope, it wasn't - he was shocked, disappointed and genuinely sorry. We left the room temporarily so he could reset the puzzle, then we came back. He kept apologizing, and explained that they had just hired a new person and they failed to double check. Though that mistake was a "giveaway" for us in the sense that we kind of knew what to do, I appreciated him for taking accountability and I could tell he felt really bad. He also kept checking every puzzle afterwards to make sure they were all reset properly. Later on, we got to a puzzle that was a bit "clunky". Apparently this puzzle is known for "acting up" so you have to be careful with your timing and "strength". Blah sorry, I'm really trying to not spoil anything here! Eventually we solved that puzzle, but if it is known for giving so much trouble to people, I wish they could just fix it. We escaped with 6 mins left, but the reason why I'm giving this 3.75/5 is because of those two puzzles, and the fact that our game master was nudging us the entire time, without us asking him for help. In that sense, we never had to ask for a hint, because he was pretty much telling us what to do and where to go next or what to pay attention to. Escaping didn't give us a sense of pride and accomplishment. I didn't feel smart and though their website gave it a 7/10 difficulty level, it felt a bit too easy to us because of those regular nudges. Had I known he was going to be the nudgy type, I would've asked him to only nudge us if we ask or if he feels we are falling way behind. Just not for an entire hour :( The Pyramid 5/5 Absolutely loved our experience there and the game master. The room had a good mix of straightforward and "reasonably challenging" puzzles, though we did end up asking for two hints. The adrenaline rush was real in this one, I think we escaped with 50 secs left!! We were so worried we weren't going to make it on time but that victory felt so good! Our game master was truly amazing, he said he didn't feel the need to nudge us too much as he saw we were making great progress and it seemed we knew what to do. He only nudged us once or twice when we looked stuck. His nudges were along the lines of "oh wow, this thing looks interesting, did you see this?", and that was a solid enough nudge for us to figure out what to do next. After escaping, we felt soooo accomplished and satisfied! Super grateful for our game master for trusting us and giving us this 5/5 experience. Black Dragon 2/5 After escaping the 2 other rooms and getting a good sense of their style and decor, we were super excited to try Black Dragon! They had set the bar so high, so I admit we had very expectations for this new room. Unfortunately, that high didn't last. We were progressing somewhat fast and figuring out puzzles at a very decent speed, however, we encountered a total of 3-4 broken and unsolved puzzles along the way. And the saddest part is we still escaped... even though we had not even solved those 4 puzzles. Somehow, the room unlocked itself, and when we opened the door, our game master said "CONGRATS, you escaped with 17 minutes left!" We were sooo confused. We told our game master we were still working on some puzzles, and he was surprised to hear that the door somehow got unlocked. We showed him the puzzles, and all he said was "Aw yeah, sorry, this is a new room". The room had already been open to the public for a month, and it was so hyped up, so I was so disappointed after trying out this one and not even getting the experience that we expected. read more

Tom was our game master for Black Dragon and the Pyramid. He is so friendly and attentive whenever we needed help. I do like that they have a GM in each game with you because often times when the GM is watching remotely they tend to waste our time typing the hint, distracted with other groups, or not paying attention to what is already completed. We've played all 3 rooms including Atlantis, and was blown away by the tech, puzzles, and set design. I love the detail and thought put into each room. I'm so glad places like Escape Room LA exist and are still around. We recently did the new Black Dragon puzzle which is actually multi-room with some hallways, Hong Kong-themed, and intricately decorated. Our guide was John, who is actually the designer of the game! I would say it's a medium-difficulty puzzle and can be fun for people of all experience levels. Our own group was a mix of first timers and experienced players and I think we worked through everything at a great pace! My only advice is to be ready to split up into at least 2 groups to solve the many puzzles though! So much content to go through! read more

We came by on Saturday at 12:30 for the Pyramid for a group of 3. Our game master was Sybil (sorry if I butchered your name), and she was awesome. Super friendly and professional. We had a great time and completed it with 7 minutes to spare. To not spoil the fun, it wasn't too difficult the puzzles, but there are many and I loved how they were very different from other places that I've been too. They have many newer styles that are upgraded from the lock and key rooms. It was quite interactive and had many puzzles for all of us to work on together. There were some moments where we spooked ourselves, but the room is not scary. It was spacious and we all had a great time. Looking forward to returning for Atlantis, when the kinks are fixed. read more

I went to Escape Room LA twice in one day (7/9/22) to celebrate my birthday. We did The Pyramid room and Atlantis. The rooms were well put together and it was good for my larger groups cause there were multiple puzzles you could work on at the same time. We had a great experience with The Pyramid room. The game master was engaging and we got lucky with some guessing so after we escaped, he offered to explain the puzzles we didn't quite fully understand. I left excited to come back for the next one! BUT... later in the evening, we came back for Atlantis. The game master had a bad attitude from the very beginning. She glared at us as we walked through the front door, she was rude the entire time, and made the experience unanimously awkward & uncomfortable. She never told us if/how we could ask for a hint and it wasn't until near the very end when I found her standing in the first room on her phone. When we finally asked for a hint, she refused with a snarky remark. Compared to all other escape rooms I've done in the past, she was the WORST game master by a long shot. We escaped, no thanks to the host. I understand people have bad days but looking at the past reviews, it doesn't seem like this horrible service is a one off. I think everyone that had their experience ruined by this lady should get a FULL REFUND. She made the overall experience a waste of money and a waste of time. If we didn't have such a great time doing The Pyramid room earlier in the day, I would've rated this place zero stars if I could. She was the BIGGEST DOWNER to my birthday celebration and if I had known we were going to have such a horrible host, I would not have chosen to come back. I wouldn't return to this establishment unless I could be guaranteed that she wasn't our game master. read more

Played Black Dragon the other day and had a great time. The set design was incredible. I've played all 3 rooms here, and the set design for all the rooms are top notch. Some escape rooms you play, it just feels like any ordinary room with some decorations. Not here. The puzzles were plentiful and fun. My personal favorite at this location is Atlantis, but all 3 rooms are worth a play. Our game master, Anika I believe her name was, was awesome. Warm and friendly, and stayed to chat with us after. Would recommend this location to my friends, family, or coworkers. read more
