We were pleasantly surprised by the results. The Caldo de Res featuring tender beef and vegetables precisely cooked in beef broth, but it lacked some of that strong beefy flavor we're looking for. I've been going to Esperanza's for over 30 years. Started going when they were located on Hemphill and Rosedale. I can't go back. The Lancarte family has some real problems at the restaurant. I don't see it changing. Quality has gone way down. Everything looks like a gross slop. The service is horrible. Our server barely stopped long enough to take our order. I had to yell across the restaurant as he was walking away while we were still trying to complete our order. Extremely rude. The three of us were sat at very large round table. Table was so huge. We could barely converse with each other. Every visit over the last 5 years is horrible, I keep trying it hoping it has gone back to how it was before. But never again. I don't care about the prices as some have mentioned. I only care about the experience. And it is always horrible for some years now. Coming from someone who has cooked i can tell it was thickened with cornstarch and or flour. But the cornstarch or flour was NOT cooked out. It was very grainy. Their chorizo and egg is one of my favorites and I also like their chilaquiles with salsa verde (and add chorizo). Homemade pillowy tortilla and refried beans rounds out the meal. The service is great and they are fast. Lots of tables and a bar to accommodate different sizes in your party. They get busy so you may have a little wait during peak times. We came here for my dad's 70th birthday. We were able to make a reservation ahead of time and they were more than accommodating. We had a party of 14 and we were able to be seated slightly early. They brought us chips and salsa and any other appetizers right away as we waited for our party. It was virtually empty when I got my rice and beans which is all I ordered in the first place they were cold. I've been coming here for years, and I am so exasperated. Okay, I've known about this place for years, but as with a lot of places, I just never had, or made, the opportunity to go. I knew it was the Joe T's family, but I also had it confused and thought it was along the lines of "Righteous Foods" type place, and well, I don't need vegan items on the menu trying to confuse me. However, I finally got the chance, cleared up that it wasn't what I feared, and now I've eaten there several times. Bitch all you want, I like the tex mex at Joe T's. The only thing I don't like is the huge amount of food they bring you when you order the mexican dinner. Two of this, two of those, two more of that, with huge bowls of rice, beans, and guac. It's way to much food. The first thing I noticed here, was I can get one cheese enchilada, with rice and beans, and you get one crazy nacho and one small taco. Just enough and it's cheaper, and there's not some crazy crowd of wanna be seen's standing in line blocking your desire to just get a table and eat. The margaritas are the same, honestly, better than I noticed lately at the north side digs. Couple of them will have you reevaluating your next activities. The place is a decent size and can still get crowded, but unless you're going weekend nights or for brunch, you should be good. Some prices are pretty good, some I think are a bit high. The menu has a lot more options on it, should be something for everyone. But I usually stick to the tex mex, which I think is pretty reasonable. I really like this location, it's just easier and more relaxed here. Also, they take credit cards here, so no "do I have enough cash" anxiety to worry about. read more
