Not to happy with dining today. We were sat by a filthy cooler that kept getting and my daughter wet. Had to switch seats to the end of the table so none of it would go in our food. The waitresses were very nice. The only thing I saw that needs to be corrected is they need a scooper for the tortilla chips. They were not really changing their plastic gloves as they were serving and filling the chip basket. The bus boy was also helping with serving chips and not changing the gloves. Nestled in a cozy ol' fashioned downtown of Claremont sits Espiau's, a Mexican food restaurant with other varieties of food. It appears that this establishment did a series of additions to make the building what it is today. Once, inside a hostess greeted our party and sat us in a booth. Delicious complimentary crispy fresh chips and salsa were brought to our table and consumed quickly. A second platter of chips and salsa quickly arrived to meet our needs by the bus boy. A wet ranchero burrito, fish sandwich platter, and fish burrito was the delicacy for our group. We enjoyed the meal immensely. Pretty good Mexican food. I ordered their beans, cheese, and rice burrito enchilada style with half green/half red sauce. It's one of the few places where my burrito came to the table super hot. Loved this. Guacamole was tasty but very smooth. So depends if you like it smooth I think it depends on what you order here. I went here a couple years ago and remember not being impressed but today made up for it. I wish they refilled drinks a little bit sooner. We had to wave down the waitress a few times. Overall, tasty meal. I heard their Jalapeño Margarita is delish. That's on my list for next time. read more

I've been here a couple times with a buddy who works nearby. The first time was about a year ago for happy hour, and the second was last week for lunch. The surrounding area of Espia's in Claremont seems to be a bedroom community. There is nearby Claremont College, and that's about it. The area is surrounded by many offices along with more restaurants. It kind of gives a me a feeling of being in another place away from the hustles of a metropolitan city. Or rather, walking around there gives me a feeling of actually being in an old movie filled with props and it's fake buildings. I thought it was pretty cool! It was a bit hard for me to write a review about Espiau's because I didn't know what to say. The restaurant is huge with many dining areas, and there is also an outside patio area that connects to the bar. The servers were really nice and accommodating. We were served salsa with chips right when we sat down. The whole restaurant was quiet and it wasn't busy. Maybe it was because we came for a late lunch. However, the first time we were here was for happy hour... and it still wasn't as busy. At least there was a live band there to entertain around patio. Well, enough said. Let's talk about the food. The soft tacos we had the first time was good during happy hour. The tacos were freshly made, and they were carne asada. We must of had at least ten tacos since they were tiny, and probably drank a few beers while we were at it. They second time we went for lunch, we ordered the Cobber Burger, Chicken wings with a dipping sauce, an arugula salad, and had chips and salsa along with a couple more drinks. Hoping the second time will be a better experience, I was a bit disappointed. The burger wasn't as good as it sounded. I wish the jalapenos were cooked or at least pickled. I know it's personal preference, but what we paid for the burger was not worth it. If I had a choice between the jalapeno burger in Carl's Jr. and this place, I think you'll know which I will choose. The salad was good. It was fresh and it was very enjoyable. So no complaints there! The chicken wings was also okay. I prefer my wings lightly battered or just stir fried. But these wings is just fried chicken. A bit too much batter which ruined the whole concept of buffalo wings. No celery comes with the wings. Oh well. The chips were good, but only a bit salty. The salsa was delicious though. Just make sure you have a drink handy while you eat the chips. The mix drinks was good. Pretty consistent with it's alcohol. So no complaints. And the beer is bottle... so no comment. My overall experience here was mediocre. That's why it was so hard to figure out what to write about this place. The first experience I felt was better. Maybe the inconsistent food the second time put a damper in my experience. I probably won't be back for awhile. So please improve... until the next time. I will be nice and give it a weak three stars. Even though I was disappointed in my lunch, at least the servers were cool, and the whole place is quite nice as it's pretty well kept. read more

Went to Espiau's while walking around the area. We had been here before but we know the seating can be taken up on the weekends or if there is football or fights on. We sat outside in the patio area. The seating was ok. Metal chairs and metal table. Not to bad. Lots of TV's around to see all the sports. We ordered drinks and got chips that were really good and hot sauce. We ordered the Espial's salad we have had before. When the salads came out omg, they looked so good! We also got a bottle of their special salad dressing! The salads were great! the special dressing really makes the salads great. Also they do not skimp on the cheese that they put on the salad. We both really like the salads. We plan on coming back here for sure. The service was good during our visit. the server did tell us about other items he thought that were good and we might enjoy. The menus are filled with lots of great looking food. the prices are really good for what you get here. The parking can be a real mess on the weekends. We got lucky and parked within a block. You can walk around after a great salad and visit all the surrounding places, there is very good shopping near by for sure! read more

This place is kind of like a tex mex, not authentic Mexican food by any means but it's still good! I love ordering the nachos here and the drinks are good too. I'm giving this place a three star rating because of the bad customer service I've encountered over the years. The owners are nice but they hire the most arrogant/rude waitresses ever! I've had several bad experiences with the service here. One time I came in and one of the waitresses said to my girlfriend and I that we can find a seat wherever there is an available seat (we were nearest the bar section) so we found a seat. All of a sudden another waitress comes to the tables and tells us we have to wait to be seated, we can't just sit down anywhere. So I tell her we were told we could, and she asked us who said that, so we pointed at the waitress who told us. She went over there, argued with her coworker, then returned to our table to tell us next time we need to wait to be seated (scolding us as if we are children). Then she took our orders with great attitude. She didn't come to refill our drinks and she took a long time to bring us our bill. This is not acceptable behavior, she shouldn't have been passive aggressive with us when it wasn't our fault. This is only one of several times I have came here and had rude servers help the table I'm sitting at. I think they should stop hiring students from the Claremont Colleges and hire anyone who can be polite! read more

I can see why people are not too satisfied with this place. Great location, great atmosphere, but the food was just ok. They are closed between 3-4, arrived and waited 30 minutes, and another 15 minutes for food to be served after ordering (Sunday). Chips are seasoned, cannot eat them with your food. Salsa was great! My favorite was the salad which came loaded with shredded cheese and a side of vinaigrette. I love that this place has a bean mix of mashed and whole, unique. Rice was dry. Meat tastes amazing in the flautas. Server did what she was there to do, similar to ordering in a drive through. My opinion is that prices are too high for overall quality of food which was too salty. Overall cleanliness needs improvement. The carpeted areas needed a good vacuum. Also, they really need to clean their restrooms. The minute you open the door it's smells like an old wet towel This place has a lot of potential, but the quality of food needs to improve, along with their cleanliness. Not so sure if I would go back. Chips and Salsa I did enjoy. I had taquitos especial they were good. Tortilla soup was really good and spicy. I ordered it even after the waitress kept saying (it's spicy, are you sure? you can't give it back) Service not so friendly. Very good food. Had an avocado bacon cheeseburger and a taco. Both very good. The taco was a pretty of situation though. The taco came on a plate and took up about 1/3 of the plate. The rest was a large pile of shredded lettuce and cheese. No possible way to put in the taco, and no dressing to use as a salad. I was told that customers liked to use a dressing and eat the remaining lettuce as a salad, but nothing came with so that didn't make any sense. It took very little time for Espiau's to become a local favorite. Dozens of visits and I have yet to be disappointed by service and/or food quality. My personal favorite is the Chicken Burrito, wet style with Red/Green sauce. SO GOOD! Perfectly cooked chicken every time. I don't know why I have been waiting so long to write this. I've live in claremont 20 years now. Espiaus has continued to suck for the 20 years I've been here. I have eaten there, once a year and every-time I hope for a different outcome. The food is seriously garbage and the service always sucks. This experience ruined my appetite! I have been a customer since Espiau's was in Pomona but today was a different story. I was meeting my husband at the restaurant and walked a good distance to get to the restaurant. It was warm and I became thirsty. I was seated and given a menu. The busboy brought chips and left. After 8 minutes without any service I asked a waitress nearby if she could bring me a glass of water. She told me that she wasn't my waitress and no water was delivered. Secondly, I asked the busboy and he forgot. Thirdly, I went to the bar and asked for water and he was too busy. After 10 minutes passed the waitress came up and I asked for water and she had an excuse about being too busy. Then the manager came by and asked if everything was okay and I told her after three attempts and now 12 minutes I still had no water. Meanwhile, my husband is still trying to park. I ordered a beer which took 10 more minutes! Inexcusable and ridiculous is the above story. I didn't see the manager again and my service was average. With so many choices and a new Mexican restaurant opening up the street, I don't think I'll return. The only reason I didn't leave was that my husband wanted the overpriced salad. read more

A favorite place for lunch in Claremont village. To be honest, I've never tried the Mexican food because I can't get past ordering the sandwiches and salads, which are all good. My favorite is the chicken burger, which doesn't have a traditional patty, but sliced chicken. There is something about the interplay of the honey mustard, avocado, and bun that makes me want to stand up on the table and cheer. It's great, and the Cole slaw is the perfect side. The chips and salsa they start you off with are unique and tasty. Service can be a little slow, even a little inattentive, but it's always friendly. The outside patio is nice, but I recommend sitting in the bar area, especially the window booths,which have the best light and view. read more

The quality of food was bad. It seems like they focus on catering to the college students drinking needs since the restaraunt is located near several colleges. Last time I checked this was a restaraunt servivg Mexican food, not solely a bar. Last night I ordered shrimp fajitas. It was an insult to call the plate shrimp fajitas. I am used to getting fresh sizable shrimp at other restaraunts. I was served small baby shrimp that looked like they bought frozen baby shrimp and dud a quick grill with some seasoning. The salads were cheese salads garnished with a bit of lettuce. The Quesadilla was made with the wrong cheese to be good like a Quesadilla should be.
