    Jalapeno margarita
    Taylor J.

Nostalgic lunch (for my mom and her friends) and I was happy to tag along. This place used to be my mom and her friends old stomping grounds when they went to college in Pomona (about 50 years ago) Arrived without a reservation on a Saturday afternoon, big mistake! This place was packed and for our table of 6, we had to wait about 45 minutes. Pro tip (call ahead, you'll be happy you did). But we walked around the cute town and came back with a table waiting for us. To start, I had to try the iconic salad. My mom and her friends raved about how yummy the salad was and I have a sneaking suspicion why. That bad boy is packed to the brim with so much cheese. But yes it was totally yummy. My favorite part is they bring you a whole squirt bottle of vinaigrette dressing. Yes please! I totally understand the hype. The rest of our meal was ok. We got the fajitas which were seasoned great and the tortilla soup was nice. Drinks were totally great! I got the jalapeno margarita and white peach sangria (which had a little fizz - totally appreciated) Pleased with our visit to Espiau's! But even happier I got to see mom and her friends enjoy themselves at this historical spot.

Downtown Claremont has a vibe. This spot is supposed to have great salads. I don't experience a great salad. It was basically lettuce and a ton of cheese. The house dressing is just yuck. The service was slow-refilled one of our drinks by handing me the cup over a half way instead of walking to our table. Weird right? My mom waited an exorbitant amount of time for the chicken she ordered on top of her salad. She was most of the way finished before they finally brought it to her. I'm not a fan of this place.

This is an OK sports bar. Very large patio. Lot of screens and decent food, and drinks.

Always enjoy stopping here when I'm in the Claremont village. Good selection of food and drink. Great atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating, always clean and staff is always great. They open at 10 am on Sunday during football season. Special menu for football as well. Having been on a chilaquiles kick, today I tried theirs for the first time. For a $12 skillet it was loaded with chops, beans, potato, egg, crema and cilantro and was quite filling. Took half home. Great deal for breakfast.

I came here with my friend and her party for her birthday because we lost our reservation for a restaurant across the street haha. The staff was very accommodating with our party of 9 and we were able to sit almost immediately. The restaurant is honestly very big! The patio sitting has a lot of space and their inside as well. For the menu, I will say that there is quite a variety to order from, but I wish they had other Mexican food options. I ordered the quesadilla appetizer as my meal and it wasn't too bad! Our waiter was also very kind and tended to our needs very well with our huge party - so thank you!

Tuna melt with bacon and potato salad.

I was in the mood for a tuna melt with bacon, and I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted. I wasn't in the mood for fries, so I went with the potato salad which tasted pretty good as well. Service was attentive, and refills on my iced tea were quick. This is a comfortable place for both lunch and dinner, and with the summer heat coming in, there's an outside area that's covered where I've hung out to enjoy the breeze. Compared to the average ratings for this business, my experience has been above the three stars. My minus one star comes from the chips being incredibly salty, so I pass on them most of the time. Otherwise, this place is a solid local spot for me! Cheers!

Food is ass, not Mexican, not good and not worth the time. All I have to say is the tortilla chips had lawrys seasoning salt on them .

    Ask the Community - Espiau's

Are you going to bring back carnitas any time soon? I miss my favorite taquitos!! And the chile colorado / red chile? I miss my Ranchero burrito! If you brought them back, I would come more often. Maybe you could have them one or two days per week?

Are you checking for vaccination cards?

No, they are not. Only restaurants in the City of Los Angeles are enforcing, not LA County.

What is on the happy hour menu?

Do they allow dogs in the outdoor patio?

Hi there! We do allow dogs on the patio as long as they are on a leash, remain on the floor, get along with others, and are well behaved.

But some shady charges or maybe we'll call it miscommunication just rubbed me the wrong way. I always order the mole chicken enchiladas and my wife (being vegetarian) asks for the same dish but if the enchiladas can be vegetable or cheese. Apparently this means a 8$ up charge? We've done this many times in the past and always been charged the same price for both. I asked the server at the end "the veggie version is 8$ more expensive than chicken?" And he just shrugged and said yes. Just found it interesting that a meat dish would be 8$ less than a purely cheese/veggie dish. Especially since done this in the past with no issue. I also asked for "hot sauce" for my dish. They brought out a spicier house salsa as the hot sauce...totally understandable and the salsa here is usually free. Apparently it's a 4$ "chipotle sauce" that the waiter did not inform me would be charged. I would've easily just said I want tapatio or no "hot sauce". I used maybe a teaspoon for 4$. I told the waiter this when we questioned the bill and he just shrugged. These may seem like small inconveniences but when they seem like they intentionally don't tell you the details and then when called out about it just kinda shrug it off, it was a disappointing end to an otherwise tasty dinner. We love it here and will certainly be back but it just sucks that I have to be extra cautious & skeptical when ordering from now on.

Honestly I had zero expectations coming here, especially after reading some of the reviews which mostly skew towards good, but the bad ones did have me second guessing my plans, but at this point I was already committed to the idea of dining here. Casa Maguey has a pretty good variety of different offerings. I can't remember each specific dish I tried since there was a lot I tried, but the stewed/braised meats were all very tasty. There was a chicken one with fajitas, stewed/braised beef, and another braised dish with spare ribs. I got a small scoop of rice and scooped up some of the braising sauces to go with the rice. There was a veggie dish that was more cumin forward... I think it was potatoes? Both red and green enchiladas were great. The fresh tortillas really made a difference with the tacos. Very good. And you know I had to get menudo because of the weather. No complaints either. Speaking of complaints, I did have a bit of a surprise in the middle of my meal, but the manager (I'm assuming) took care of the issue. I thought it was handled well and appreciated how they resolved it. Overall I had a great experience here this past Sunday! The staff was friendly, the food was good, price was very reasonable, and the champagne kept flowing (big W!!)
