Improbably good mall food!…read more My family has been more obsessed than usual with Jamaican / Caribbean food since our fabulous meal at Bar Manje, trying our hand at various jerk chicken and sorrel drink recipes at home, foraging for wild amaranth to make a more authentic callalloo. Of course we honed right in on Scotch Bonnet when we found ourselves at Danbury Fair Mall, hungry. Scotch Bonnet is the opposite of what you think of when you think "mall food." Everything appears to be scratch made. There are bubbling pots on the stove right behind the counter wafting enticing smells. And we saw fresh, hot food being brought out every few minutes as we waited. The jerk chicken we tried was moist and well seasoned (I think boneless thigh meat), mild enough that the 11-year-old didn't have trouble with spice levels. The jerk chicken by itself was fair, but after a dunk in scotch bonnet pineapple sauce -- which packed some legit heat -- it was fire! Callalloo was lightly seasoned and retained some texture. Green plantains had an unusual-to-us texture as though they'd been boiled and baked, not fried -- more like potatoes than tostones. I'm a sucker for well made tostones, but these were healthier and held up better on a steam table. The progeny enjoyed the mac 'n' cheese. The counter doesn't showcase everything that's on their extensive menu (e.g. jerk fish, seafood boils). I assume these are made to order and will have to make time and stomach capacity for these on our next visit. Really nice folks run the show. We very much look forward to next time!

What I got instead was a legit, fresh, sit-down-restaurant quality meal being handcrafted right in front of me by people who clearly take real pride in what they're doing. I ordered the jerk chicken with their "smoked" jerk sauce over a field greens salad and it was honestly one of the best salads I've had anywhere in the area. Perfectly seasoned chicken, bright fresh greens, and a sauce that should probably come with a warning label because I'm still thinking about it a day later. The best part? The whole thing was under $14 with a drink. In 2026 that feels like some sort of culinary glitch in the matrix. While I was waiting, I watched the team chopping, seasoning, and assembling everything fresh with the kind of care you normally see in a full-service kitchen. It completely changed my expectations of what a "mall food court" can be. Meanwhile, everyone else can keep lining up for the same old tasteless, sodium-laden "Asian" food... or the wildly overrated chicken chain from Atlanta where people stand in line like sheep for dry, forgettable chicken. Their loss. And I barely scratched the surface of the menu -- wings, sandwiches, bowls, patties, and a bunch of other things I'm already planning to come back and try. The only tiny bummer? The plastic cutlery they offer is a little too flimsy for a salad this hearty and loaded. But honestly, if that's the biggest complaint I have, I'm thrilled. So yes... I came for a quick mall bite. Instead I found a place I'll intentionally come back for. And again, apologies to the chefs for the skepticism. You converted me.

When we walked in we were greeted by the owners and family. My girlfriend had her first experience with oxtail, I had the brown stew chicken. The food was tasty, well cooked and not too spicy.
