Mean Bean reminds me of a coffee shop I used to visit back before I was old enough to legally drink beer. Evidently, it's a "chain", as in, there are more than one Mean Beans. Whatever, I wouldn't know, and it's not like they've got some insane branding strategy that makes you well aware it's a chain. I like this place. I came once after a few drinks next door at Local Roots with a group of friends, brainstorming a side project. We drank coffee, planned out some ideas at a table, and in general enjoyed the atmosphere and the staff that was working humored us, to boot. I popped in earlier today, needing to escape my home office, and in need of caffeine, and while it was quiet and empty... the charm was still there. Despite seeing their sign, I keep forgetting they now have wine, and I'm afraid I may come there one afternoon, switch from coffee to wine, and end up closing the place out. Update: Now that Espresso 22 had changed hands and the name, it is so great! I only had hot chocolate, which is good. Though I do wish it were a little more chocolatey. Otherwise very yummy! The atmosphere is so much better now. They've updated the inside with new flooring, walls and decor, and seating. It's such a cute little place now! And the staff are very friendly, which makes it even better! Mean Bean: This coffee shop is mediocre. The coffee is not very good (I'm from the Pacific Northwest, so I may have high expectations), and it was so incredibly hot when I got it, I burnt my tongue! The decor and ambiance are strange. The sofas inside seem like they were pulled out of a dorm and have blankets thrown over them. There was no music, only what sounded like news radio, which was odd...It's too bad there isn't a better local coffee shop. I've seen them before, but you know our culture is a bunch of people on the go when our coffee lounges are drive-thru. To me, coffee is something to get comfy on a couch with and sip slowly, savoring the flavor and letting the warmth soothe you and the caffeine then starts to work and your brain can function for the day. If you really are in that much of a hurry, Mean Bean has a drive-thru. But if you want to taste your coffee, they have a lounge inside. The interior is a cute, cheery place painted pale Caribbean blue, yellow and dark orange. It's in an old house and the second floor is cut out, adding to the already spacious feel to the place. They have comfy chairs and sofas also in blue and yellow, complete with coffee stains. Managing Mean Bean are a couple of charming ladies. One of them might know a thing or two about good coffee as she is from Hawaii - and may be hence the tropical feel of the place. I guess I shouldn't assume, but I do think she's knows what good coffee is. As for the food and drink, their portions are generous. The huge pastries are comprised of muffins, cookies, scones, banana bread, brownies and croissant sandwiches. Muffins include almond poppy seed, apple cinnamon crumb, chocolate chocolate chip, banana nut and raisin bran, which was obviously popular since there was only one left. I tried an almond poppy seed and it was perfectly moist and tasty. Luckily I didn't have to go for a drug test afterward. Mean's beans can be hot, iced, unbean (decaf) or flavored and they have all sorts of flavors from fruity to nutty to sweet. A good deal that Mean Bean offers is called the Manager's Special and with it you can get a muffin and medium house coffee or grog for $3.50, adding to their generous portions. The grog is Mean Bean's own and has butter rum and hazelnut flavor to it. I had the grog along with my muffin for the Manager's Special and it was a good coffee with a bold flavor that wasn't too strong. read more

Was running an errand up in the far northern ranges of 614 and found myself in need of an afternoon slump cup. I had mentally consigned myself to Starbucks vs. just toughing out the afternoon caffeine free. I checked my yelp app and realized I was in walking distance from Espresso 22. I'm not often in Powell, so I didn't know the history of the place, but I was pleased to not be forced to buy corporate coffee outside of I-270. I got a great iced mocha and was appropriately buzzed for the rest of my day. Good to know where to find great coffee in unfamiliar territories. read more

I don't like coffee and I liked this coffee shop! Very reasonable prices and a unique offering of food items. $2.75 jumbo muffins and $1.50 macarons. Quaint vibe inside. I am in town on vacation so wanted to try a local, non chain coffee shop. The coffee was very good, however the service was disappointing. I ordered a breakfast item and was told that the staff person would bring it to me at my table when it was ready. However it appears as if my breakfast sat around for a few minutes because it was cold and I was told to come up and get it myself. I am wondering if it is because I didn't leave a tip? I don't usually tip counter staff unless they perform exemplary service which isn't often. Being a senior citizen with several disabilities made this a "meh" experience. read more

GROSS! My girlfriend and I were looking for a place to caffeinate and study and ended up at Mean Bean. After we tasted the food we decided to make our own coffee and study at home! My iced chai tasted like it was made three days ago, and we're not sure if my friend's iced vanilla latte even had coffee in it--it tasted like chocolate milk! They nuked our blueberry scones in saran wrap and they tasted like the plastic was still on. Even a Starbucks pastry would have been better. A nice town like Powell deserves better! read more

Another of the Mean Bean chain, it has the same weird clashing colors and mismatched decor - comfy couches, metal tables and chairs... In this particular branch, all the furniture is also very close together, giving the place a very cozy feel. If you do not want to be so close to your neighbors, there is a single table apart from the rest by a window where you can watch people at the drive through. Anyways, when I went, I gave the standard cappuccino a try. ....it was... alright. Not the best I've had but not the worst either. Overall, I recommend sticking with the plain black coffee if it's caffeine you're after. The man working the counter was quite friendly and, as I was finishing my coffee, asked me if I wanted to continue loitering about for a poetry reading. I sadly had to get going, but it is nice that the venue supports events such as that, as well as local artists whose works were hanging on the walls. Overall, this isn't a place I will drive on purpose (especially since there's another, larger store in Delaware), but if I'm in the area and craving caffeine, I might drop in again. read more

Revamped interior lends to a modern, comfortable vibe. Perfect for an early morning business pow wow or meeting a friend for coffee. Staff incredibly friendly, helpful and polite, if they don't have what you want they will try to recreate it. Coffee is delicious. I'd much rather visit this store than wait in line for a mediocre cup of Starbucks. The drive thru is an added bonus. A win/win for downtown Powell. read more

Espresso 22 - you had me at nutella latte. Anytime I can get nutella in a drink, it makes me a happy girl. Located in the heart of powell, it's a perfect spot to stop for your morning coffee. My only complaint - parking. Boo, they have a super small lot and there are some mornings where I can't even get a close street spot. Not that I should be complaining about walking BUT when I'm in rush - it can be a pain. On the flip side though, when I'm in a rush I can just use their handy dandy drive through! Breads are brought in from beehive bakery and donuts are some of my favorite brought in from Auddinos. read more

I found myself wanting some quiet time to work on some stuff and saw they had free WiFi. I went in and the shop is pretty quaint but very clean which is awesome nobody wants to sit at dirty tables. I ordered a mocha and it was delicious. Pricing isn't bad at all. The only thing I really don't like is the parking is terrible. They do have a drive thru and I've used it one other time. It definitely helps when you're in a rush and the coffee is quite good and I love supporting local businesses so will definitely keep coming back! read more

This is probably my favorite small business in Powell, and I've consistently come here with my family for about 8 months. However, the service and food is inconsistent and solely depends on the people working. This last time, one of the breakfast sandwiches we ordered had to be remade 3 times. (First time: paper was still on the cheese, 2nd time: forgot the sausage, 3rd time: bagel was so hard/stale that I could bang it on the counter.) After the 3rd attempt, when it was still wrong, we just left. I'm pretty reasonable, and if this was the first or even the second time it happened, we would have let it slide. We will still come here, however, I'll stick to only ordering drinks and muffins. read more

Typically I would say 4 stars with Espresso 22. Great atmosphere and quality coffee. My experience today has me questioning the cleanliness of the staff. One staff member was repeatedly sucking snot up from their nose from behind the counter. It was audible and stomach turning. After five continuous minutes of this he finally blew his nose. Then continued to handle everything behind the counter, without washing his hands. All I can hope that this is a one time offense and not something that is practiced by all inside the establishment. read more

A cute and family-friendly coffee house tucked away in downtown Powell. I came here to get some work done, but it seems like this coffee shop is more suited for meeting up friends and grabbing pastries and caffeinated beverage/apple juice with your little ones. Regardless, I had no problem concentrating and being productive (wifi available, although outlets are limited). The overall atmosphere/interior is clean and new, and they serve Oneline coffee. First things first, the floor looks like it has not been swept in weeks and the tables were covered in grime. Additionally, half the tables were taken up by just stuff, not people. People literally leave their bags, computers, and coats on tables and then go god knows where. Because of this, there is not adequate space to sit and enjoy your coffee or get some work done. While the service is great, the management should step in and discourage this practice so there is space for all of the customers. Finally, the coffee is good but nothing exciting and it is still pretty expensive. To be honest I am still pretty bummed this place came in and took over Mean Bean who seemed to never have these problems. Do not waste your time in this place- there are plenty of other places in the area much more deserving of your service! I hope they can make some changes around here and improve this place. read more

Probably one of the most underrated coffee shops in all of the Columbus area. Espresso 22 is a great place to stop in and get a quick coffee, go through the drive thru, or sit inside to study or read. The coffee and pastries (some from local vendors) are great. Staff are friendly and the location is in the cutest part of "town" in Powell near other businesses and even some shops. read more

The Mean Bean is better than I expected. I was checking out Powell for the first time, and thought Id stop in for a coffee and some Wi-Fi. I assumed it would suck because it seems that all suburban coffee shops try to dip into the modern coffee shop craze without leaving behind the nostalgic suburban kitch. For the most part, The Mean Bean has been able to give old Powell a minor dose of city style. The walls aren't textured with powder blue wood cuts of farm houses, or ornately stenciled vines. The design is simple, clean, and interesting. The coffee is standard, but delicious. I'd reserve this spot for cold winter mornings if I lived in the area. read more

I met a friend at expresso 22 in Powell yesterday. It's a very nice place, cozy place. All we had was coffee. I was there mid-afternoon on a weekday and it was pretty empty. It's not a good place to have a quiet conversation, as you can hear everyone else talk. But I'm sure on it Saturday or Sunday, for a lazy moment with your friends it's perfect. It has an outdoor section. If you've never been there before it's on the Southeast corner of Liberty and Powell. There's a neon expresso sign in the window. Confusing because there's a Huntington ATM there and it almost look like a bank with the coffee shop attached. read more
