Ah, Etto. A place you can't forg-etto about! (That worked, right?). Here's my take on Etto: 1.) Ambiance - Once me and my +1 walked in, we were immediately taken away with the intimate and yet bustling status of Etto on a Sunday night. The restaurant is mainly one floor that have rows of tables splayed out complimented by the intimate lighting of table candles. Once we walked in, we were immediately seated close to the windows for optimal people-watching capacity. 2.) Food - There's no doubt Etto takes the slice when it comes to their pizza. For pie lovers out there, expect a fare of pizza that is primarily thin-crust, flaky, with just the right amount of mozzarella coating. Hands down, the bread was the most redeeming aspect of the pizza: buttery, soft, and yet a soft gooey consistency that melts right in your mouth. But truth be told, the pizza itself isn't the star of the show at Etto -- its the blazing fireplace that sits at the back of the restaurant where the magic happens. I can't remember for the life of me which pizza we bought, but i do remember the Alagash paired nicely with the cheese, bread, and oil of this wondrous pizza. Oh, and the olives. Don't forget to try out the delicious version of pitted assortment of olives, they cleanse the pallet well before pizza heaven can begin. 3.) Service - I will also say that the highlight of the night was our waiter, who was attentive, conversant, and cognizant of our needs throughout the night. I think his name was James? He was tall, with long-ish hair, and was a pleasure to talk with. We also asked him for rec's before ordering, and he seemed well-versed in the menu and particular tastes and preferences. I would likely go back again just to pick his brain! Overall, Etto was a real treat, and I'm grateful to have had the experience. Solid up-scale pizza joint for those who can appreciate the fine delicacies of the pizza -- bread, tomato, and cheese. Because what else do you even need in life? Etto was an 8 minute trek on foot from our hotel, a straight shot down 14th street. Along the way, there were so many restaurants: The Pig, ChurchKey, Estadio, and then Etto. We were lucky. It was the end of August and the weather really wasn't too awful, we arrived un-sweaty. We sat outside at a table shared with another couple on the end. The sun was setting and the late sun made the place look great. To start, we had Moretti's and then the calamari salad. The beer hit the spot and the calamari was fun to eat. (My favorite menu note: there's a section called "Anchovies and Little Fishes"). Next came the margarita pizza which was great! I loved the crust and splotches of cheese. She loved it too, but was reaching into some of the nearby herb planters to add more basil. I mean, how cute is that? So, overall a great restaurant. And nearby is Dolcezza, so you can head off after for a really great gelato and cappuccino. read more

I finally decided to come to Etto for a late dinner. I'd walked by it several times on 14th street, peaking inside and thinking it was a cute spot. The decor is simple and the restaurant is somewhat split into 2 - a dining section of mostly 4-top wooden tables and a long bar on the other side. I grabbed a drink at the bar, where the bartender made me a custom drink because I was feeling for a cocktail but nothing on the menu caught my attention. The host grabbed us when our table was ready and we moved from the bar to the table with our hands very full - carrying our coats, cocktails, and water glasses. It would've been nice if the host/server had offered to help! To start, we tried the butternut squash agrodolce with mozzarella which was a special. It was amazing! It came recommended by the server. We also ordered burrata to start, which was also delicious though the portion was small (compared to Duke's, which may be the only other place I've had burrata at in DC). To eat, we tried a few pizzas. They were pricey ~ over $20/each (though the portions were quite large; I took home half of my pizza). It was slightly too greasy for me. I have to say I prefer 2 Amy's which is also cheaper. For dessert, I had an affogato. Can't go wrong with espresso and ice cream! In summary - a cute spot with good service at the bar and once seated. For my pizza fix, I'll probably go elsewhere but I would come back for a drink + appetizers on a special occasion. read more

Etto is great! I live nearby and have been here half a dozen times over the past 3 months, and have never been disappointed. Great pizza--flavorful sauce, perfectly-textured cheese, great toppings, crispy crust. I particularly like the classic margherita and the pepperoni pizza. It's not the *best* pizza in DC, but certainly the best in the 14th street corridor. They also have several fun and flavorful appetizers and salads. Drinks-wise it is a little pricey during the dinner hours (5pm-close), but their lunch menu has awesome "afternoon" cocktails (aperol spritz for $6? sign me up!). Tasty, cheesy, hearty goodness in pizza form. Went here while staying with friends who live in the neighborhood and were initially cautioned that it was more of an "acidic" pizza than a "sweeter" pizza, but we definitely made the right choice. I had the fennel sausage and peppers pizza and it had a lot of heat and savory flavor. My wife wisely recommended that we only needed one pizza given their size and our burrata appetizer. I am basing this review off of the Caesar salad. Normally when one thinks of a Caesar salad, you think romaine! Nope, not here. It was kind of like eating a rabbit salad with caesar dressing. I seriously love this place! I've been here numerous times and the pizza is just divine. I love their pizza, especially the crust - so flavorful, chewy and divine. I've tried a variety of their pizza, and especially love their eggplant pizza. The atmosphere is wonderful here - I've gone here for casual occasions but it is a great atmosphere for a date or special occasions too. This place is usually super crowded so it's often hard to get a table, but its worth the wait. Of course the pizza is a must but get their cocktails and look at their dessert menu! Everything is just delicious here - just go here and you won't be disappointed. Just one thing to note is that everything is on the pricier side and the pizzas average on being $20+. Everything was amazing. We (2) split a Margherita pizza, a radish dish, the artichoke, and some rice ball with cheese in the middle (I didn't order so I don't remember the name.) We also had a VGT and another drink that I forgot the name of, but both were very good. I believe the last one had Polo in the name and it was very very tasty. The food was really good, nice and unique. We sat outside and there was no wait, which was very nice. A girlfriend and I checked this place out on a Saturday night. They don't take reservations but we were able to get a table relatively quickly, which is a nice treat given the location of this restaurant. The restaurant is definitely a cute little, intimate place for either date night or simply catch up. They also have an adorable outdoor seating area but we sat inside. To be honest, their food was slightly overpriced and the menu was sparse. One point I appreciated is that they had very unique tapas/side dishes. We ordered the peppers and some sort of a cauliflower dish. They were both very different and definitely unlike anything I've ever tasted before. It was definitely good and the green olives/capers were a great addition to both dishes! We stuck to the basics and ordered a marghertia pizza to share. The pizza itself was okay but the crust was very chewy and yummy. I would return to this restaurant if I really wasn't sure what else to eat. Not sure if I would crave it though. We are Neopolitan pizza nuts - we study it, we crave it, we do it all from scratch, studying and perfecting this art ourselves for 20 years. We are obsessed. We traveled to Naples, the birthplace of this pizza just to know what the real deal tastes and looks and smells like. This pizza at Etto had so much promise - many things were done well, I wanted to love it! - but the TOMATO product was completely tasteless, flavorless and thus the pizza was just meh. There was almost no discernible brightness, acid, tomato flavor whatsoever. I can tell you they are using a tomato, probably San Marzano, that has no flavor. There are myriad San Marzano and other tomato products available. But they are all different. You need to taste them frequently to see if they've changed since tomatoes are organic creatures and they can change flavor each year. Some do. Anyway, I was so stoked but this was a blah pizza night I am really sorry to say. If the chef would test for quality and make sure the tomato product is flavorful and bright the way it really needs to be, it could be sooo much better. I could not say Etto has the best pricing, but the taste and quality is good nonetheless. The mixed greens have a sour, yet sweet taste, and is made with a complex mix of different lettuces. The pizzas are just mouthwateringly delicious. And don't even get me started on the loaves of bread. The atmosphere, which is a small, cozy area, with a beautiful patio, is very pleasant to be in. The employees are very friendly and empathetic, adding to the atmosphere of the restaurant. Totally unacceptable! We were a party of 4 and all our pizzas arrived very burned, black on top and on the bottom. Despite the risk of starvation, we asked for them to be redone and our waiter and manager tried to explain to us that with a wood-fired oven pizzas come out like that. Unfortunately for them, we are quite familiar on how a pizza should be cooked (if not for a 30 yrs experience eating it in Italy), and a wood-fired oven kept clean to prevent burned flour under your pizza. This is a really quaint place in a very bombastic part of town. There are so many great options on 14th Street, a far cry from even 5 years ago, and Etto, in my opinion, is a great newcomer. We came in the day after Christmas and were seated in about 15 minutes, which isn't too bad. The bar area is a bit cramped, but that's part of the fun. Burrata was a creamy, the bread was freshly baked, and the eggplant salad was something I tried and failed to replicate. Of all the dishes, I think that was truly my favorite. Roasted (or "burnt" or "charred" as I recall it being called), marinated in red wine vinegar with capers and roasted peppers. Very tasty. Pizza was also quite good, and much bigger than I anticipated. I would venture that it's larger than Two Amys or Red Rocks or Pizzeria Orso, but perhaps I'm wrong. We came here skeptical, after hearing so much buzz about the amazing pizza - and left converts. The hype is much deserved. Aside from the nicest staff imaginable and the charmingly cozy atmosphere, Etto is serving the best fan-cee pizza in town, alongside some killer cocktails and small plates. Don't be put off by plain Jane names like "Celery, celery, celery." This salad may forever boost your enthusiasm for the lowly stalk. The negroni here (made with homemade vermouth) will also knock your socks off - well balanced between sweet and bitter, it is a great way to start your meal. And the pizza. The crust here is ridiculously flavorful, reminiscent of a loaf of whole wheat sourdough bread. Stretched thin, it doesn't overpower the glorious toppings, but when you bite into the unadorned puff at the end of the slice - wow. I've tried two of their special pies now, one with morel mushrooms, the other with squash blossoms and ricotta. Both were outstanding. My husband could not say enough about the quality and plentiful quantity of the charcuterie plate. He and a friend sampled the venison sausage, well-marbled bresaola, and the acorn-fed Iberian ham. Unlike most charcuterie platters, this one was huge! After the bread and meat, our pal didn't even have room left for dinner. It did not stop my husband from enjoying a pizza, so your mileage/appetite may vary. None of us could manage dessert after this feast, but I'm eager to make another attempt. read more

You walk into the restaurant and are greeted by the bar, a clean wooden bar filled with cold antipasti marinating in olive oil, legs of proscuitto, and hanging salami. They have beers and wine on tap, and a several italian-inspired cocktails and prosecco available. There is a decently large section for sitting, but eating and drinking at the bar is the move. Food - we had the buratta, proscuitto di parma, spicy calabrese salami, and pizza con rapini. Everything was delicious, especially the pizza. Thin crust that's crispy on the bottom and bubbly/airy at the top of the crust. They have a large brick oven pizza behind the bar that they're constantly stocking and feeding pizza to. The buratta was simple and delicious, and the cured meats were solid. Drinks - we only had prosecco, wine, and beer. No complaints here. They have a few bubbling red wines on tap as well. Looked interesting. Ambiance - perfectly loud, great atmosphere, no music (not sure it would be necessary for this type of setting). No complaints. Overall - I've already been back since my first visit and think I'll be back multiple times over the next month or so. This is a perfect addition to 14th Street. I'm totally puzzled. I met someone at a party a few weeks ago whom I had a foodie love fest with for about an hour, as we discussed all the pros and cons of our favorite DC bars and restaurants. We had the exact same taste, with the one gap in our shared record being Etto, which she loved, and I had not yet visited. So, I decided to go last night. As I walked in the door, someone else coming out looked at me and said "amazing food" as she walked out the door. After these two ringing endorsements, the boyfriend and I were expecting to be blown away. But, that was anything but the case. While we waited at the bar for what turned out to be a short wait, I got the watermelon punch. Very tasty, though a little light on alcohol. So far, the night was going ok. Things changed when we got food. Now, admittedly I didn't sample much of the menu, but between the two of us we got the tuna belly ($19) and a cauliflower pizza ($17). The tuna was, in a word, awful. Perhaps I was naive to expect that tuna belly at Etto would be like the delicious fresh tuna belly that I had in Japan just weeks ago, or that you can get at most Japanese restaurants. I mean, it was being served at an Italian-inspired place. But then, if you are going to serve me a tuna can sized chunk of cooked, olive-oil marinated tuna belly that tastes pretty much just like slightly higher quality canned tuna, PLEASE don't charge me $19 for it, and please describe how it is served in the menu. The bf ate it all, but neither of us enjoyed it. The pizza was equally lame. The cauliflower was in giant chunks that fell off the pizza, and the crust was thin and soggy and flopped all the ingredients off when picked up. Weirdly despite being soggy, it was also burnt. I know a feature of wood-fired pizza is some sooty spots, but this pizza was so burnt all over that it was pretty much the predominant flavor. I ate two pieces and left the rest there. So, I give the place two stars. I would have given it one, except for the good service, which itself deserves four stars. Not only did we get sat quickly, but the bar staff actually smiled at us, and after we complained about the tuna, the waitress comped it for us. We weren't expecting that, so thanks for that Etto! I want them to be better, because I like having more restaurants in my hood. But, I think I will give it a long long while before I go back. read more

Etto is rapidly becoming a weekly habit for us. The pizza is great, the atmosphere is calm (despite the crowd), and the service is amazing. Usually we end up ordering the cauliflower salad, which is deliciously soaked in a saffron dressing. The margherita pizza is easily as good as 2 Amy's, the gold standard of pizza in DC. The crust is perfectly salted and the rest of the ingredients balance well. The Chocolate Salami is cleverly prepared and delicious. We usually order a bottle of wine, and haven't been disappointed yet. I'm not much of a wine aficionado, but the waitstaff has been incredibly patient with my disjointed descriptions of what I want and has matched them perfectly. I can't believe this place doesn't have better reviews. Easily the best pizza I've had in DC thus far. Started with the rose wine on tap, which our server told us the owners have shipped from their vineyard in California--I was so bummed to find out I couldn't buy bottles of it. Had another glass for dessert because it was that good. We started with a squash quiche-type dish, which was pretty good. Then, we got the pizza. THE PIZZA, sweet Jesus, the pizza. The Cotechino with Fontina and Egg was brought fresh out of the oven to our table, and cut right there by the staff. The sausage crumbled in my mouth. Spiced perfectly and not too heavily meaty. This is one of those meals where the flavor exploded in your mouth, and you keep eating the incredible meal, even though you're so stuffed. Pretty solid, but not better than Pupatella or 2Amys. The prices are very high - $17 for a Margherita compared to $12 elsewhere in the DC area. I understand the rent is high on 14th Street, so perhaps that's the big reason. Everyone is friendly and it is a nice space, though it is small, so be prepared to wait. If you don't feel like waiting too long, just grab take out and your pizzas will be ready in 10-15 minutes. The cheese and ingredients are excellent, and for those that do not feel like making the trek up to 2Amys or out to Arlington for Pupatella, this place is a solid replacement. Finally tried Etto last night. It has been on my list for awhile, but every time I walk by it , it is choc full of people. I figured 6 p.m. on a Thursday would be as good a time as any, and I was right. I settled in at the bar to wait for my friend and struck up a conversation with the lovely bartender Lily. She was friendly and had great suggestions. (Try their wine on tap. The Syrah was great). We each started with a salad: a Celery, Celery, Celery Walnut (fun name, no?) for me, and a Roasted Peppers with Olives and Mackerel for my friend. We also split a Margherita Pizza (thin crust, generous lumps of mozzarella and lots of basil), which was divine. But I must say, dessert carried the evening: the "Etto of Chocolate Salami." It is literally fudge with cookie strung up just like a sausage. It's not too rich and it's fun to eat. I ordered a scoop of ice cream on the side, which went extra well with the chocolate salami. We also got out of there without too much damage to our wallets. Four glasses of wine + 2 salads + 1 pizza + dessert = $90. Can't complain about that. read more

Wow, where do I start about this place? First of all, I only went here because brightestyoungthing.com recommended the pizza, otherwise, I would have totally walked past this place. The service was VERY attentive, granted it was 5 PM and they just opened and no one was there, but literally every 5 minutes someone was by to refill water, and interrupt our conversation. The hostess/server was a bit overzealous, very excited about everything, over describing items, and over selling everything. The table next to us asked if that random punch bowl was sangria, and she went in to a rambling rant about how delicious it was and what it was made of and tasted, and the customer was like, "Oh, so you don't have sangria". As I've seen others yelping about, the random bowls of food sitting on the "bar". First off, there is basically no bar area, there's like 3 seats and a table considered the "bar" area. It more looks like a "to go" hang out spot. Anyway, when we walked in I saw all these bowls of salads and cheeses and appetizers. At first I thought, wow is this like Italy, where they give you free appetizers at the bar for happy hour. No, no it's not. It you want a bowl of olives that people have been hanging out next to, it'll cost you $4. We got eggplant parm, which was OK, nothing to rave about, and we got the sardine pizza. The pizza dough was good, but the rest of the pizza was whatever. It had hardly any cheese, everything fell off of it because it was too flaccid. For $17 you'd expect a little bit more. So I WOULD NOT SUGGEST THE PIZZA, regardless of whatever blog tells you. Other notes: Expensive cocktails WINE WINE AND MORE WINE that's like 80% of their menu Over Attentive servers It appears as if they spent too much money on the decor they need to charge $17 for a pizza to make up for it. So I've been there 3, maybe 4 times already... Is that bad? No, it's not bad, it's terrific! As others have mentioned there are relationships with the owners with Obelisk, Standard & 2Amy's and you can see influence from all three. My wife and I have always liked 2Amy's pizzas but moresoeven their antipasti! Etto makes a better pizza (IMHO) and has the same idea for the antipasti with most in pretty, white, ceramic dishes right on the counter, most served room temperature and all super tasty! So far we've had the pizza with fontina and homemade sausage (literally a 10), the sausage (a different kind) and rapini, also awesome, the margherita pizza with razor thin garlic and amazing tomato sauce. The antipasti are also winners, the charred leeks, leek, egg and potato frittata, oil-cured anchovies, rabbit, and the charcuterie and cheeses (burrata and ricotta especially). The wheat is ground on-site which is super cool and is unbleached so it looks a bit like wheat but it is not. The pizza crust is chewy with a crunchy and bitter outside due to the bubbles and charred spots... exactly how a pizza should be! Honestly I can't say enough about Etto, it's just so good, in such a great location and EVERYTHING is fresh and made in house, even the meats, cheeses and flour. Thank you. read more

Yum! So the past couple weeks I have been completing my crawl up 14th street checking out the many new restaurants. My friends and I got to this new, hopping spot just before it got too busy last Thursday. There appears to only be one 5/6 top so plan accordingly. We split the margarita pizza and the special pizza with ricotta and eggplant (I think there was supposed to be pine nuts by none to be found). Both great!! We also split a slice of spring veggie tart and the farro salad which had a nice lemon zest. Next time, I want to try some of the salami! Amazing - Chef Tad has brought the friendliness of standard, the high quality food of Two Amys, and his own low key, home crafted style to this terrific neighborhood spot on the burgeoning 14th Street corridor. This restaurant offers small plates of an outstanding selection of meats and cheeses that you can nosh on while you wait for your Neapolitan style pizza. The menu is short but the selections are excellent, and they offer a limited but high-grade selection of wines and beers. We enjoyed a sampling of their unique and delicious salads - surprisingly they even make a celery salad something to look forward to. The flour for the pizza and bread dough is all milled on site (the mill takes up a spot on the far wall of the dining area) and gives their breads a grainy, fresh, homemade quality that you won't find at other restaurants. There's a stand-up bar where you can order small plates, and they offer home made sweets for desserts. All the details of this place were well thought-out and on the whole it offers an authentic, hand-made feel from a true team of craftsmen plying their art. This restaurant is highly recommended for small groups looking for an intimate, fun dining experience, if you can get in. It is sure to be packed! read more

This was my first time getting takeout to support a local business. I ordered the meatball and pizza combo, and while the food tastes great, rich in flavor, the pizza had a portion burnt to a crisp, and the portion of meatballs was unbelievably small. Most photos of their meatball dish online show there's a large portion of them served; we were given a small container with ~10 of the tiniest meatballs I've ever seen. A great addition to the neighborhood! I do hope they start taking reservations, as the space is tiny so there isn't much room to wait. However, we got on the list and waited at home since we live around the corner (it was about 30 min). Once seated, we enjoyed the small space - feels very intimate and relaxed. Two of us split some cured meats, the cauliflower app, and a margherita pizza. The meats were super delicious, though we ordered a little too much (we tried the wild boar, chorizo, and ham). The cauliflower was surprisingly refreshing - the citrusy flavor almost made it a palate cleanser between the meat and pizza. Pizza was great, with a tasty light crust and perfectly seasoned toppings. We had to take a few slices home (mostly because we ordered enough cured meats for four people instead of two!). Also a bonus: they gladly gave us a pizza with only 1/2 cheese so that boyfriend could enjoy cheese and I could avoid it (yes, ask any lactard, pizza is still good without the cheese!). None of this "compromising the integrity of the dish" blather I sometimes get. (Since when is the integrity of your dish more important than my health?) I wondered what would happen with Ghibellina and Etto essentially across the street from each other serving similar food. Having now been to both, Etto is our clear favorite. Our initial impression was that Ghibelina wants to be the place where people throughout the DMV come for dinner, and Etto wants to be the place folks in the neighborhood will pop into for a pizza and glass of wine. While we waited for our table to be readied, we got delightful drinks from a knowledgeable bartender. The salads were especially delicious, order the asparagus, the eggplant, and the porcini, oh goodness, you can't go wrong. I was born and raised in Connecticut (home of the best pizza), and this just felt so much like coming home. Etto is a cute little pizza/Italian place on 14th and Q. The inside is absolutely lovely and rustic, and I certainly enjoyed the paintings of salami on the walls. The pizza here is fantastic. Naturally, I ordered the clam pizza, and was blown away by the flavors. It was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and had just the right amount of claminess. The friends I went with also loved their pizzas, which came with ample toppings. For dessert we all ordered affogatos, which were just perfection. This is another one of those, the meal was good, but overpriced kinda reviews. Nice comfortable decor, homey really. The tables are a little close in one corner, but maybe I'm just too fat. The menu is succinct and on the small plates idea. Though the way it is printed made my brain hurt. Radicchio with Bagna Cauda was tasty, but literally a single head of radicchio dressed and put on a plate... Hard to share without a lot of cutting stuff off the head. The Large plate of salumi was ok... but at the equivalent of $80/lb it kinda hurts my brain too. The pizza with sausage and "friarelli" was delicious. Solid Neapolitan style pizza. Yum. Buffalo ricotta tart also good, but the three dollar melon-baller sized scoop of gelato was despite being delish, also melon-baller sized. So at the end of the day, good food, nice relaxed, casual atmosphere but for two people at $80 some reason it just seemed like a lot of money. Overall, this place was very impressive. The atmosphere was comfortable, non-pretentious and conducive to conversation. As for the wine list, it focuses heavily on Beaujolais and Sicilian wine. The glass I had was quite enjoyable. Balanced and refined. The two small plates. The pork belly was a winner. The sea beans not so much. But the pizza was the real standout! The fennel sausage was great. The crust was amazing and reminded me of my time in Milan. A bit chewy. Well seasoned. Bravo! The dessert was fresh and clearly made from high quality ingredients. Not too sweet either. I will be back. If only this place were closer to where I lived! read more
