I've been holding off on reviewing this spot because I didn't want extra competition for their lovely outdoor tables, but after another magnificent meal at Etto last night it just feels wrong to hide this gem. I love every corner of this restaurant. The wine list is the most original and delicious in DC. Highly curated and always delightful. They were the first to introduce me to dry lambruscos. The seasonal daily board specials, the watercress Caesar, the professional service, and the excellent Neapolitan style pies made with flour they mill themselves make this 5 stars a no brainer. So many DC restaurants are built at the scale of a Cheesecake Factory (ahem Diplomate... Jaleo... Zaytinya...) but Etto is at the scale of a true neighborhood restaurant. Came here with the boyfriend and another couple after being disappointed by a 2 hr wait at All Purpose Pizza. The waiting system is a little bizarre (they won't call you- you call them) but maybe that's because the space is small and the place is popular. Best dough on a pizza that I've had in my recollection. Apparently the secret is that they make their own flour! Amazing and the quality shows. We shared lamb meatballs, which were small but tasty, then had 3 pizzas. The artichoke and all the veggies was delicious, as was the prosciutto and arugala. We also had one with anchovies, which are really not my thing, but if they are, that pizza was good too (according to the boyfriend). We ended with a vanilla bean panna cotta, which was small but packed full of flavor. Overall, I think the best thing about this place is the delicious, delicious dough, oven fired to perfection. Went to etto for dinner with my girlfriend on 8/18. We didn't have reservations and were seated right away. It was moderately busy. The restaurant is small and cute. I had a cocktail and the prosciutto pizza. My friend had a cocktail and the margarita pizza. Both were fabulous. We got the peach panna cotta for dessert and it was the best panna cotta I've had in DC. Would highly recommend coming etto! read more

I was here for the first time earlier today and I don't have a single bad thing to say. I'm from New Jersey and currently live outside of Philly so I like to think I know pizza. And I especially think I like to know tomato pie (aka sauce less pizza). Lemme tell you, Etto's version of the tomato pie is so so good. It was so flavorful and I'm a big fan of any and all types of cheese and I didn't even come close to missing the cheese on this pizza. We also had a special pizza that was asparagus, speck, carmelized onions and goat cheese that was also really well done. I'm not sure of our bartenders name, but he was a male, with mixed dark and gray hair and he was super attentive and helpful. I also had one of their specialty cocktails, which just like the pizza was really well done. I'm reading in some of the reviews that it was really loud or over crowded but that was definitely not my experience. I thought the atmosphere was close to perfect. Would highly recommend if you are in The District and in the mood for pizza. read more

I've been here a few times and all I can say is it's perfectly fine. Honestly, it's usually a last resort when the other restaurants in the neighborhood are too busy. We can usually pop in here at prime time and wait just 15-20 min. The food is tasty enough, although the menu is very limited. The small plates/antipasti are hit or miss - I've had a couple of very good salads, but the meatballs the other night were just ok. The pizzas are good, with a nice char on the crust, although I wish they had some more interesting varieties. I do like their wine list, and the fact that they usually have a punch of the day at the bar. I've always found the service to be pretty good, but the atmosphere is a little cramped, with a tiny bar and a small area for tables. But I will say this place becomes MUCH more attractive in the warmer months, when the lovely outdoor patio is open! read more

Lived in DC for 20 years and never made it here. Came back for a weekend, and now I'm wondering why it took so long. It's small, quaint, and quite perfect. It's hard to get a table, so stand at the bar, put an order in for ANY pizza and order a cocktail and first course while you wait. Get the marinated stuffed artichokes. Please. It will set the tone for what's to come. Watch the bartender make your cocktail with precision or order the daily drink. Win win. And then the pizza come, and you die. Three of us ate the same food all day, except for one meal, dinner at Etto, which only two of us ate. The two of us were happier in that moment, but unfortunate in the long run. Why? Well, in the short run, the food was good. The pizza is the best part. The pizzas we had were all consistent. They had a great crust and nice contrast of flavors, even if they were not as piping hot as we'd hope. The rest of the food, including the bread (surprisingly perhaps), is lackluster. The servers were all friendly; no complaint there. So what about the long "run" you ask? Well, about 8-16 hours later, two of us descended into terrible food poisoning. The other (non-Etto diner) was completely fine. A process of elimination means we haven't been able to come back to eat at Etto since. read more

We got takeout so I can't speak to the vibes inside, but it looks like such a cute place that I can't wait to go in person. The pizza was probably one of the best I've had in DC, and I've had a lot of DC pizza. The crust was nice and thin and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. We did reheat once we got them home, but that's the downside of takeout so I can't really fault the restaurant for that. The pizzas are of average size; I think 2 people could split one with a few sides or each person could have their own and either would work. For the price I kind of expected them to be bigger. While in D.C. from out of town, thought we'd give this place a try. It was such a good experience. Although the restaurant is small and doesn't offer much seating, the excellent service and tasty food made it worth the wait. The hostess, Matea (sp?) was so thoughtful about updating us on the progress on our table. While we waited, the bartender Alex was so friendly, and had no problem serving us tons of water (our group was exhausted after a long day of walking and no one thought alcohol would improve on the duration) while he told us about the menu. Alex explained how Etto grinds their own flour for the (incredible) breads and pizza crusts. The cocktails he was mixing looked fantastic, especially the dirty martini. When we were seated, we ordered the Suckling Pig Porchetta with green tomato jam, a seasonal special, and the Baccala Mantecato with Crosstino. None of us were sure we'd really love the Baccala Mantecato, but Alex made it sound so tasty that we had to try it. It ended up being my favorite dish of the night. He explained to us how they cured their own salt cod, then rehydrated it in cream, whipped it with potatoes, smeared it on toasted homemade bread, and put it back in the oven. It was even better than it sounds, and was a wonderful comfort food dish on a cold night. The 4 of us shared 2 Neapolitan pizzas with tons of curly pepperonis, a good amount of buffalo mozzarella, and basil. The pizzas were really lovely topped with their fresh Parmesan and ground red pepper, and I think only 1 slice remained after we were finished. Our server was wonderful as well (quick, friendly, good sense of humor), but we didn't get his name. I love Etto... Excellent service from when I walked through the door... Super nice hostess, bartender and waitstaff. They definitely set a nice, friendly atmosphere for the restaurant. It is elegant, casual dining that isn't pretentious. The bartender let me sample a wine before ordering. Rare offer in DC! Really large wine list here!!! Definitely order the almonds as you peruse the menu. There's a lot to choose from...the menu is mix of Euro, some Spanish mixed in with the Italian. The ricotta with lemon was delicate, and was a nice companion to our cheese-less vegetarian pizza (cauliflower with other interesting toppings)... Followed by an affogato. Etto is a nice staple in the 14th St Corridor. The main thing that people go for here is the pizza which they make in a fantastic brick oven. I've only tried it once and it was tasty. My overall rating of this place is 4.5 stars. Most other times I just go here for a quick bite ordering a small plate or two. These items are basically antipasti loke dishes that I build to make a meal. There really mostly cold dishes. They do have maybe two to three items which are hot but it really is limited because they don't have a stove on the main floor. All the hot dishes are also made in the oven. It usually might be a eggplant parm, baked clams, meatballs, baked eggs, etc. The popular items are mostly the same so some people may get bored from the fare but they once in a while change a couple of items based on the local produce in season. Service is generally pleasant and comprable to many others in this neighborhood - a bit friendlier than Le Dip acrossthe road and a bit more relaxed. Overall reliable Italian/pizza place on 14th. Might not take the top spot of most people's list for best pizza in DC but it is likely there on most people's short list. read more

I've been going for a decade. Consistently great pizza every time. Solid classics and interesting new flavors (nettles and pancetta!).

I'm shocked that Etto doesn't have at least a four star rating. The restaurant is top-notch: friendly and attentive service, great bread and olive oil, solid margherita pizza, and daily Italian tapas. Comparatively, it's really not that expensive and if you're looking for a laid-back, quite meal, Etto is a perfect choice. I was a big fan of the tapas they offered, or what they refer to as on the counter. When you walk in, you'll see a bunch of different items on the bar counter that change daily and from my experience, are pretty awesome. The two I had were the eggplant parmesan and the cauliflower salad. I'm not a big eggplant parm guy but this one was absurdly good: cooked in its own individual skillet, the sauce, melted cheese, and even the eggplant itself were pretty much perfect. The cauliflower dish was a bit on the oily side but was still light while cauliflower had a lovely crispness and golden hue to it. Both are solid choices for sharing but if between the two, I'd go with the eggplant parm. read more

Etto has good pizza, wine, and service. That being said it's a little pricey for what it is and there aren't too many options. The pizza was a good size with crispy thin crust. I ate the whole thing and didn't feel bad about myself afterwards. I didn't like that there is no fully vegetarian pizza on the menu and it cost me $2 an ingredient to add to the marinara pizza (no cheese). Plus my server charged me for the wrong pizza anyway. I've passed by this place walking down 14th street on so many occasions and never even realized it was here! The interior is very small with an authentic Italian feel. The servers are friendly and attentive. The menu is slightly confusing in my opinion, maybe because it changes daily so it doesn't have the typical menu layout of starters, salads, pizzas, etc. We started with the Baby Zucchini Caponata. It was good but weirdly reminded me of Chef Boyardee sauce. I know this sounds like a bad thing but I actually really enjoyed it. The zucchini was fresh and the sauce was smooth and slightly sweet. The pizzas were delicious. I do wish the margherita pizza had more mozzarella, but the flavor was great. Etto is a quaint Italian restaurant from the same owners as 2 Amy's. The pizza - ranging from $17-25 - is thin oven fired greatness. The center is admittedly a minute or two shy of stable enough to hold the toppings but the flavors are great. Don't skip the vegetables - the spicy romanesco is a must. We arrived around 7pm on a Saturday night. We were told to go ahead and sit where we'd like outside so sat in the corner. The location is great for people watching everyone walking on 14th and waiting for tables at Le diplomat. We ordered to start all of the items on the 'bar foods' menu... This came with three EXTREMELY tiny plates and one okay sized one. The decent sized plate was baked chickpeas... These things were Awesome! I'd never had them in shell before and really enjoyed them. The other three small plates were small radishes raw with butter and salt (surprisingly good), 2 toothpicks with a small pepper, some sardene, and something else I can't recall (also good but tiny), and the tiniest little red pepper stuffed with sardene olive and a nut... also pretty tasty but about the size of a gumball. If we stopped here it would have been a 4 star review minus 1 star for the size of the bar plates. Unfortunately we then got our pizzas... we had the margarita and the onions and salami one (forget the name). Both were served on a brown type of dough that tasted alot like Injera bread that is served with Ethiopian food... not sure why in the world they use this dough. It was soggy and droopy for the center half of the pizza and wasn't what I was hoping for at all. The flavor of the toppings were pretty good- if only they could cook it properly to be crispy and used a better dough. All said and done, I'd come back to this restaurant for tiny bites, drinks, and the good location of the outdoor seating... but wouldn't ever eat another pizza here unless they changed it up significantly. read more

Our server was great. That was the best thing about Etto (hence two stars instead of one). Otherwise: we were going to try the "on the board" menu items, then we realized that those literally were "on the board". As in, they were sitting out on the bar right next to where people were drinking and talking. If that's not a health code violation...someone should make it one. Instead we ordered 4 different pizzas and they all were soggy. I liked the spices on the cauliflower pizza but the cauliflower was also soggy. My friend said her sausage and greens pizza "tasted like air." Same for the alla Romana pizza. The plus side is that it was a comically bad meal and we had a lot of fun laughing about it. And, like I said at the start, our server was really great. Sorry to say but eating jumbo slice while sober would have been a better move than eating pizza at this place. Wow! I wish I could go back more often, but just visiting this would be hard. But for a chance find, we totally struck gold. Really enjoyed the creativity and interesting things at Etto and you should too! Went with a friend so we ordered all kinds of things to try. Started off with the venison salami and the Iberian ham. Always get the iberian ham as long as it is not Serrano! And pray for it to be pata negra! They also had a sardine appetizer which was excellent. I'm a sucker for good sardines and these were. The hint of citrus was a nice touch. We moved onto the pizza and got two. We're there to try things and so many sounded interesting! The Cauliflower is a must! This is one of the most interesting pizza's I've had in a while. And don't be afraid of the anchovy! These are great anchovies and just enough to give you a bit of salt that goes well with the cauliflower. The other pizza was the Cotechino with Fontina and Egg. The Cotechino was flavorful but mild and worked well with the egg. Starting to really love egg on my pizza! But the best thing is the crust. These guys know how to make a good dough and their oven is at just the right temperature. The crust is the perfect combination of tender and chewy. I would say they give Pizza Bianco a run for their money with this crust. Only in my dream do I make crust like this. You get the great bubbles on the edge and a good flavor. If you are looking for excellent Neapolitan pizza, than look no further than Etto. The do pizza and they do it extremely well. Beware of the wait. We arrived at 9:00 pm on a Friday night and were told the wait was a hour and 45 minutes! I knew Etto was small and in demand, but a 2-hour wait was ridiculous. Lucky for us we called their bluff and came back after 45 min, and were seated immediately! Not sure why the hostess would tell us such an extreme wait time, but we're glad we didn't give up. Now to the pizza. It's thin crust pizza with minimal cheese. We ordered the Margherita and the Alla Romana (tomato, capers, olives, anchovies, onion, mozzarella). Both pizzas were outstanding. Of course, I was partial to the Alla Romana and thought they did a tremendous job not overdoing the toppings. The style here is not just a minimalist crust, but the toppings, cheese and sauce appear to be perfectly balanced. We also tried the charcuterie plate, which you can choose 4 different meats for $16. I thought this was quite the bargain for the size and quantity. The standouts were the wild boar, which was prepared like prosciutto and with beautiful flavor and the salumi, which was pressed with just the right amount of spiciness. Again, Etto is a true gem in the Logan Circle neighborhood. Spectacular pizza, cozy atmosphere, and solid service. Upon my next frantic pizza craving Etto will surely be atop my list! read more

I really want this to be better than three stars. Not because 14th Street needs another great restaurant (it doesn't) or because Ghibellina across the way has bad salumi (it's quite good), but because I want to justify spending a hundred bucks on a pizza, 50 grams of salumi, and a bottle of sparkling. Yes, the pizza was amazing. We had the sausage and friarelli pizza, which had just enough rabe to make you done with the pizza when you ate half. The mozzerella was top notch, and the crust had that perfectly carbon'd, chewy dough. The sausage was delightful. My one comment on the pizza? The rabe should be cut in small, small pieces so it's easier to eat. I felt like I was wrestling with it rather than eating it. And yes, the salumi, cured in-house, was equally delightful. The fennel seed and orange sausage was tangy, just enough hint of orange sweetness, with a toothiness to the sausage that let you know the cure was done well. Kudos, too, to the chef who put together the briny, thin anchovies with a medium-boiled egg, on a layer of herbs and oil. A delightful oeuvre. The negroni: excellent. The summer punch: intoxicating (in that way that you want your summer punch to be). But why, oh, why, did it take us nearly twenty minutes to even be acknowledged after being seated? The hostess and the barkeep were so attentive and professional. Perhaps you couldn't see us in this 42 seat restaurant. Or wait--perhaps... Yes, I would understand if perhaps I were paying $6 a plate, but no. No, my two anchovies were $13, and my salumi, at 50 grams, was $11. Clearly I'm not paying for just the food--certainly I am paying for the service? Of course I'll go back. I've never had such a Negroni. And I absolutely adored the salumi. But I'll sit at the bar. After all, if I want to wait so long to be acknowledged, or wait forever for a server to pass by, and to pay so much for it, I may as well just go across the pond. read more

I visited Etto for a snack in late March of this year. I was meeting a friend for dinner afterwards, so I didn't want to fill up too much. I decided to try their 24-month Prosciutto di Parma option off the Salumi section of their menu. I liked it, but it was a bit pricey for the portion I received. Service was good, but they were slightly pushy to try to get me to order more food. Their seating area is rather small and if you don't visit early enough (I visited around 5pm on a Wednesday), you may not get seated for a while. From what I saw, pizza is the thing to order here, so if I find myself visiting again, I'll have to order that next time! read more

I really thought that I had already written about this place, apparently I am not as thorough as I thought. No worries, I will make up for it now. So I met up with a girlfriend before a show at Studio Theater and we decided to pop in to grab a drink and a bite, and boy were we glad that we did. We ordered glasses of prosecco and lots of yummy olives and roasted chickpeas and let me tell you that all were fabulous. So much so that I ordered olives to go. Imagine my surprise when I opened up the box the next day at work for a mid morning snack and saw some weird green things( turned out to be chickpeas in the shell) Disclaimer: I am intelligent but had no idea that you didn't eat the shell of the chickpea in a shell because I had never seen it that way so just thought it was a bean. :) Silly me. Anyway, after realizing that you open it and take OUT the chickpea, I realized that they too were AMAZING and that it can go on the record that everything that I had was fantastic. 4.5 stars Etto, only down a half due to the very nice bartender lady giving me the wrong thing to drink at the bar the first round and then giving me the wrong thing to take home at the end. we walked in and loved the vibe. food was great. service was good. we got seated and gave up another reservation . when the menu came at the bottom it was noted then the resto would add a 20% surcharge so staff would have a ' living wage'. what kind of management does not pay a living wage. shame. and we have to tip on top of this not knowing if the first 20% is filtering down to staff. so I go into you resto and theoretically pay an additional 35 to 40% more? just adjust prices like the other restos on your block and be proud you pay a living wage. raise your prices accordingly. Timber...Check. il Canale...Check. Time for Etto. I like many of the Book It, Ninja Turtles generation love pizza. I still consider it my favorite meal. Really good pizza makes life a breeze. With that said, I am trying to consume more pizza, pizza with purpose. Not necessarily All Purpose. Been there, done that.* Etto, ubicado en el barrio Shaw, has a nice feel to it. Not U Street and not downtown, Etto is in an interesting spot for restaurants. Not the touristy offerings of "down Gallery," and not the crawl scene of U Street circa 2018. This visit Etto had to be nice. Tiger Fork is closed Mondays, I must not like to read because I didn't notice that while "looking" at reviews. This was a lil dinner date with my boo and she don't like to be hungry. There are Antipasto Platters. Cheese, though I love pizza is not too high on my list. I am also trying to steer clear of meats. ;-) We did try this Cauliflower and bread combo. I love cauliflower but I would skip this. It wasn't nasty but the bread, three slices were room temp. Maybe that's how things are done but it was harder to halve since it wasn't toasted nor warmed. A couple, 3 slices--one needed to be cut in half. Then the pizza came. I ordered Margherita and was not disappointed. Everything was right with it. I loved the taste. It was cooked just right. It looked just right. It was just right! And that my friends, coupled with good service, in a nice space means t's were crossed and i's were dotted. I would give the entire experience 5 Stars but the Antipasto was just not nivel 5 Star. Great pizzas. Intimate setting. Some charming on some pizzas but the overall flavor profiles were great.

The three stars are for the chocolate salami ( yes it is delicious and no, there is no meat) and the eggplant starter. Even my carnivore husband appreciated his bite. Bit the rest of my food, like almost everywhere I eat out in DC was ok but not stellar. The roasted cauliflower salad with pine nuts and saffron was bland and same goes for the amazing-sounding but not tasting squash frittata. My drink though -" who you calling a spritz?" Was delicious. My hubs and friend split the cotechino with fontina and egg and found it good. I had a slice without meat and thought it was very good- but not amazing. Went here with friends and split a bunch of different dishes. There was no wait on a Sunday evening. We also saw the proprietors of Pasta Mia eating here! This place has, perhaps, the second best pizza that I've had in DC (I still think 2 Amys is the winner). The antipasti and side dishes were excellent. Everything we had was good, though there were a few stand-outs. Best dishes were: Cauliflower 'salad' with safron and pine nuts (best!) grilled octopus (outstanding!) I came here for dinner with a friend for beers, apps, and pizza. I ordered a beer I had never had before, and it was great! The two apps we got were also equally delicious. Luckily, my friend lives above in the apartments and is a regular, so I felt like we got some special treatment from the waiters, but they were still very nice. This place would seem like a great place to grab some drinks and food with a date or a smaller party. It's fairly quaint, but the outside patio area added a few more chairs and tables for seating.
