Without a doubt, one of the most pleasant experiences I've ever had at the dentist. Mind you, I came to Dr. Sugita for a ROOT CANAL! It was my first time coming to this dental office, which is located in a newer medical building attached to Sharp Hospital. Everything from social distance markings on the elevator floors to the receptionist wearing a mask, made me feel comfortable but I was still nervous as hell. Most people: "I don't like going to the dentist but Me: I have anxiety and a true fear of the dentist and needles, etc, that causes me to be nervous wreck the moment I even think about going, let alone actually sitting in the dentist chair. Wow!!!! AMAZING ALL AROUND. First off, the front staff is professional, friendly, and super on point. Dr. Sugita is a gentle, skilled, and amazing doctor. I had put off getting my root canal as I was told it was painful on top of the uncomfortable part and some even said that some doctors had them injected with the numbing medicine but lasted a month and had their tongue completely numb. That coupled with my nervous and anxiety drive self when it comes to any dentist period let alone an endodontics. Fast forward two weeks ago. Dr. Sugita came highly recommended by my husband who had his root canal done by Dr. Sugita. Dr. Sugita is so gentle I didn't even feel pain from the numbing injections. He numb me for the numbing injections and numb my mouth for the entire process. I feel asleep while he was doing my root canal. No pain- nothing. I highly recommend Dr. Sugita to everyone who needs a root canal. His nurse was also super gentle when taking X-Rays of my mouth to show the before and after the procedure. Unfortunately, I've been a patient of Dr Sugita and Dr Nagai several times. Each time, the doctors and their staff at San Diego Endodonics has treated me with respect and compassion. My most recent visit was during the COVID-19 pandemic. They were extremely sanitation conscious. I felt completely safe while in the office, even though I'm in the "high risk" category and have spent 3 months with minimal time outside my home. Now let me start out by saying, there is nothing pleasant about needing a root canal!! Having got that out of the way I'd like to say that should I ever again find myself in this terrible predicament I'd be comforted by knowing that I could turn to Dr. Sugita! I was in terrible pain for weeks when my general Dentist informed me that as I feared I would require a root canal. He referred me to Dr. Sugita's office, and they were able to see me within hours. Dr. Sugita's staff was very pleasant and comforting, and Dr. Sugita's chair side manner was probably the best I have encountered. He talked me through every step of the procedure in terms he knew I'd be able to understand. He made sure to anesthetize me as soon as possible to get me out of pain before continuing a rather engaging conversation ranging from modern dentistry to his early experience in computer programming before Dental school. I had no pain and only minor discomfort during the procedure, but the Dr was very conscious of my comfort, stopping regularly to ask if I needed to take a break. The office took my insurance, and today I received a check from them in the mail, apparently my insurance paid more that they thought and they made no haste in getting my money back in my hands. After my experience with Dr. Sugita's office, I only wish he performed other services so Id have the chance to visit more regularly. If you're unfortunate enough to require a root canal, I highly recommend Dr. Sugita to turn your experience around. read more

Wow, echoing other Yelpers who have been to Dr. Sugita let me just add, wow! There's general dentists and then there's the specialists - endodontic. Whenever you're facing a root canal I highly, highly recommend that you see a specialist vice leaving this complex procedure to your general dentist. I wish I had known this several years ago when my general dentist (since fired) screwed up the root canal procedure. I promptly changed dentists and my new dentist referred my repair procedures to a specialist, Dr. Sugita. Wow, seeing San Diego Endodontics offices made me feel like I'd entered a suite of new, best technology dental equipment. Meeting Dr. Sugita I immediately knew I was in the best possible hands. I just had to go see Dr.Sugita for an emergency root canal:( He agreed to squeeze me in at the end of the day on a friday afternoon and even stayed open late so that he could finish my procedure. I went to his office in a TON of pain. He did a quick evaluation, exlpained things well, answered questions and took care of the root canal. The procedure was done with minimal discomfort and he was really conscious of comfort and how much I was feeling. He was great and a total life saver-I would recommend him to anyone. read more

I was referred to Dr. Sugita about a year ago by my dentist - my tooth was hurting, so I came in to my regular dentist. He was able to stop the pain and fill the canals temporarily until I can see Dr. Sugita. I was in dread of my first root canal... Dr. Sugita's assistant, Heather, was very pleasant and easy to talk to. She asked a lot of questions about my tooth pain. Dr. Sugita was also very nice! The procedure was not as bad as I thought it would be. I told him that I had a low tolerance for pain and also that I had a fairly fast metabolism, thus I asked him to give me the longer-acting anesthetic (6 hrs vs 2 hrs). He didn't try to tell me that I was wrong or anything! He did what I requested. He also kept asking if I was comfortable throughout the procedure and let me know that I can take a break at any time. He was very patient with me because I did take a few breaks (my jaw was getting sore and tired). Overall, I felt no pain and Dr. Sugita was very good and thorough. I highly recommend Dr. Sugita for anyone needing a root canal. I haven't needed another root canal since, but I know where I would go to if I ever do! read more

Dr. Sugita was so patient, calm, and understanding during the grueling 2-3 hour procedure. He took the time to stop at the slightest sign of discomfort--and, to my surprise, there really wasn't any to speak of. As soon as the nerve came out, all the pain was mercifully gone in that tooth. Dr. Sugita worked like a skilled magician with the lightest yet most effective touch possible...I didn't feel any pain...at last!
