It doesn't look like much but let me tell you... the pork chop sammich here just hits different. It's a must try. We got ours in lemon pepper with cole slaw and pickles. There's a lady here named Chris. She goes above and beyond to make sure you're taken care of. If you happen to be lucky to have her serve you, make sure you show your appreciation!! The ambience... southern comfort feels!! We got here around 5pm right before the dinner rush. By 5:30pm, this place was packed. Lol. After tasting the pork chop sandwich, I see why. They have a paid parking garage. $3 for the first hour and $1 for every half hour there after. They do have some street parking available but it's limited. Dined at Eugene's with my mother and two daughters on our annual girls road trip. We loved it! The staff was very friendly. Three of us enjoyed hot chicken (I recommend hot damn, though my mother and eldest daughter would tell you mild all the way). My daughters waffles were warm and soft. My side of Mac and cheese was delicious and my moms corn was as well. My youngest daughter had grilled cheese, which she did not like as the cheese was not really melted. She gave her fries a 10/10 though. There was a pretty long wait for our food to arrive, but we all agreed it was worth it. We sat outside and enjoyed the lovely summer air.! I like that their chicken is tender , perfectly spiced and not those giant, overly- sized tenders that I am suspicious of that others cook. The spicy corn if in season is very very good as is their potato salad, which will cool you down a bit if you like the stupid hot chicken like I do. Somehow I have never made my way to Eugen's until today....in the midst of a pandemic! Let me just say....the food was awesome! Everything was served fresh and hot. Staff was friendly. We ate outside on the patio and it was fine. Note that even mild had a good kick to it, but it was very yummy! Really liked their chicken AND their catfish. Eavesdropping fellow passengers to my recent trip to Orlando, they spoke about the best chicken spot in Birmingham. And well, this was the place. I've had proper hot chicken in Nashville at Prince's so I wanted to see how this spot matched up against there. I ordered for both of us, the quarter dark with lemon pepper as well as mild. Now, knowing hot chicken mild should have your mouth watering and that heat should be there. I didn't want to get a "hot" because in my experience that was just the wrong thing to do. I ordered a medium once and I could barely handle it. So, learning from my mistake from a hot chicken spot, is to always order just under it. The lemon pepper I got was just because I was curious on how that was. For sides, we got the fried okra, mac & cheese, deviled eggs, and cornbread. The results of the food was not so great. Let's start off first on what they did right. The chicken was juicy, I enjoyed that. The lemon pepper flavor was also good, I tasted the lemon and that came out really well. The juiciness of the chicken was great though. What they did wrong though was that the "spiciness" of it was not there at all. Mild was described as a little kick. There was nothing at all. I don't know what they were talking about when they described it. On top of that I thought their rub was weird because it came out sweet? I mean, hot chicken isn't supposed to be sweet...it should be hot! Not temperature wise, but you get the idea. Sides were okay. I personally liked the mac n cheese because of the grilled onions, but for those who are not onion lovers this is definitely not the side to get. Plus, if you know how to do good mac n cheese, there's NO ONIONS. That sort of was different and I liked it because it was different, but it's not proper mac n cheese. Cornbread came out dry. The deviled eggs was on the sweet side. The fried okra wasn't bad, but the batter came off of it and didn't seem to stick onto the okra as well. Overall, if you're looking for something to compete with Nashville Hot Chicken, Eugene's isn't it and you'll be let down. Eugene's chicken is good and juicy, but I wouldn't categorize it as Hot Chicken. They're a good chicken shop with other deep fried foods such as fish. They have beer which is nice, but if you're trying to get some heat for your chicken I would recommend to order Hot, if not the hottest option. To me, if you're labeling as a specialist in hot chicken I expect nothing (other than sides) on the menu except the chicken and how hot you want it. read more

This place is absolutely amazing!!!! From the service to the food to the price. We stopped here on our way back from Florida and I am glad we did! They have different heat levels and I went with the mild. It still had plenty of kick to it! The fries were delicious as well. The food took about 10-15 mins to get but it was so fresh and crispy so I didn't mind. The workers were so kind! The restaurant was clean too! The heat levels are: Lemon Pepper ~ Southern (no heat), Mild (slight heat), Hot (touch of burn), Hot Damn (no too smart, not too stupid) and Stupid Hot (or the bold & daring). I went with the Hot but I was tempted to try that HOT DAMN but I was sympathetic for my stomach. Now on to this here SAMMICH! GOOD LAWD A MERCY! THAT BAD BOY WAS SLAP YO MOMMA GOOD! Being that it was in close proximity (walking distance) from the hotel (Westin), it was a no brainer. The inside of the restaurant is always kept clean, but it gets crowded and has limited seating. They do have additional seating outside for those nice summer days. The food is nothing short of amazing. After a hard look of the menu I chose the jumbo chicken tenders tossed with hot damn sauce and lemon pepper seasoning; Alabama white and honey mustard dipping sauce; and kickin' collard greens for a side. Eugene's Hot Chicken is by far the best chicken I have ever had. The fast food and sit down restaurants can't come close to being as good as this place. Their chicken is always perfect. Moist on the inside, with a great crunchy batter on the outside. Whether I get wings, tenders, thigh and legs, breast, it doesn't matter, it is always cooked to perfection. The staff are super friendly and are quick to give you a suggestion if you ask. The food is cooked quickly, but not so quick that it isn't cooked correctly. Their sides are great too, if you are a French fry person, they have you covered with great fries. I recently had their mac n' cheese and their collard greens as a side and I believe that's what I'll be ordering from now on. The atmosphere is nice and clean. The location in the uptown area of Birmingham is nice and relaxing, while the Hoover location is close to the Galleria and other shops. I have a great experience every time I have eaten here. Living 45 minutes north of Eugene's is a good thing because I would eat there daily if I was any closer. I recommend it to everyone I know that comes to Birmingham or Hoover on occasion. I can't say enough good things about Eugene's, except thanks for such an awesome experience and wonderfully delicious, and moist Nashville style chicken.
