When cruising north on Seattle's Aurora Avenue, you scoot past an Ivars and an Office Depot. And somewhere next to a Korean restaurant, your eye catches European Foods. At first glance, you see a nichè European grocery store. But it's not until you enter that you see it's much more. It is a small grocery store, minus the produce. It also has a very Eastern European vibe. At first, you think 'Russian', but in reality, it's Ukrainian. There is a shared regional heritage, but it stops there when you walk a big room, which is actually their dining room serving some yummy regional favorites. Sitting down and looking at the menu, your eyes take in all the choices. Chicken Kyiv, Beef Goulash, and house made mushroom soup. There was also fresh house baked bread to round out the experience. What was most appreciated was that the meal and the service were definitely homemade, and with treated with love! Do you wish a beverage with your meal? Walk back to the store and order a canned soda, or choose from one of variety of wines off the shelf - European vintages, of course. European Foods is located next door to Friendship BBQ in North Seattle, one of those retail/restaurant sites that I finally took the time to explore. Just this month, I have stopped in with The Homie on three occasions already (2/13, 2/17, and 2/23/23). What has been the total haul thus far: Spezi (orange+cola soda), various kinds of Kvass, sunflower halvah, Milka hazelnut milk chocolate bar, chocolate raspberry biscuits, and delicious honey cake. Reasonable prices with well organized, well stocked shelves with a variety of items. There's an adjacent onsite restaurant in addition to their retail shop. THE STORE It is a great place to get imported foods. There is nothing from Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. There is a wonderful selection of fresh breads. I recommend trying some of the cheeses. You can get good frozen pelmeni. The beer and wine selection is very interesting. This is a great place to come to try new things. The candy selection is great. There is a lot of imported chocolate. THE RESTAURANT Always a great meal. I recommend the soups. They come with wonderful bread. Recently I had the varenyky with cheese. I had an unusual inkling to try something different. I am Croatian and Serbian, so I have cravings for Eastern European food. My cravings were based on anything Ukrainian. So, I tried a variety of offerings here. They had herring in a fur coat, blintzes, pelmeni, pierogi, stuffed cabbage, blini with red caviar, beet salad. Russian potato salad. Additionally, Borscht, pampushky rolls, horiski cookies, and prunes stuffed with walnuts. Honey cake. Such a lovely spread of items. Bought all of these, plus sausages and candy. I was so pleased to be able to experience each of these items, from a store not far from me. I have also dined in their small and elegant restaurant. The atmosphere reminded me of being at my grandmother's house, serving tea and cookies to guests. Great choice of soup, pork dishes, stuffed cabbage and sweet desserts.The sausage was spiced nicely. They had a variety of sausages, I would choose a wider variety of choices next time. Selections of baked goods I wanted to try. Great borscht, with a nice dill and sour cream note. Fresh pastries. Lovely potato salad. One of the best interactions, was with the staff. They were genuinely engaged to provide the best service possible. They gave me ratings on their opinion of my food choices. All were high, but biased when it came to my candy choices. Some choices met with their approval, others did not. Love this place. The little cafe has really good food and prices; Oksana and her family are very kind people too. Plus they really support Ukraine, and don't import anything from Russia since the war started. They may be the only European store in the Seattle area to take such a strong stance. In the cafe, try the borsch and cabbage rolls and syrniki (like ricotta cheese pancakes), or blintzes. From the store, try the little frozen cheese cake bars... they are addictive. Or the jarred berries and jams from Eastern Europe... they have unique berries and the jams just taste better than ours. The little Ukrainian cafe inside the Russian import store is beautiful. The old couple that started the place got to retirement age and they sold it to their head waitress, Oxsana, who is doing a great job keeping it going. There is nothing like a big bowl of borscht to warm you up on a winter's day. These folks know cold weather and we might have a cold winter this year with La Niña in effect. It's a unique experience at European Foods and don't even think about talking politics with the staff-they do not talk about the war. I always get the borscht - so delicious and nutritious - and my husband likes the cabbage rolls. To get Chicken Kiev, you have to order it in advance. Everything is very affordably priced. read more

I am sad to have to give this little grocery with Eastern European foods a bad rating. They have some nice products and delicious prepared foods. But overcharging a customer ($39.99) from a quoted price ($29.99)--and then not making it right when the customer calls to get the charge corrected-- is scamming and renders your business untrustworthy. Even worse, attempting to paint the customer as a liar and begin arguing over the phone is embarrassing conduct. This is not a haggle vs. scam culture; you can't run a business in the PNW and expect to succeed with ethics like that. UPDATE: The manager (owner?) called me back, after a short convo, she agreed to refund my $10 tomorrow when she is back in the shop. This is an interesting place, it has a European market (I think mainly Ukrainian items) with a small "no frills" restaurant attached. It is clean, in a strip mall with parking. Service was adequate, I would not exactly say friendly, but not unfriendly either. We ordered some takeout and got a few items, since everything is in a different language it is hard to pick items. I should have done some research prior. I chose a few pieces of candy, have no idea what it was, other than pictures. One piece was really good, I did not like the other two, one I ended up spitting out. We also got some of their Patato Salad from the refrigerator-it contained potatoes, bologna, sweet peas, carrots, eggs, pickles and onions with mayonnaise (all cut up in pretty small cubes, like brunoise cuts). It is tasty. We also got a braid of cheese with olive oil and spices that we plan on having with some fresh baked bread. We ordered takeout from the restaurant, the Hungarian Goulash with mashed potatoes, tasty but it needed more "gravy"/sauce. We also got the beef stroganoff and it was SO good!! Stroganoff is one of my favorite foods and I will return for that, for certain. Both dishes came with a tasty pickle and some really delicious thinly shredded pickled carrots. I wished for more of both. We also got 2 meat Piroshky's but we have not tried them yet. Our bill was just over $57. read more

The borscht was definitely our favorite, as it had a lot of flavor and pieces of potato, beans, and shredded beets for texture. I was taken there to eat by a Russian lady who is an excellent cook. She said the food and the people who ran the shop were first class. They are that and more. Very pleasant people, really pleasant, and the food is marvelous. Be good to your mouth and stop by. And ask for help to try something new. Non-pretentious and non-kitschy, European Foods just north on Aurora is a one stop deli and convenient Eastern European market. It's where a person like myself who's never traveled to Eastern Europe can feel like a tourist within Seattle while supporting local. Imported meats, pasta, spices, cooking sauces, ice cream treats and a wide selection of chocolate items line the shelves of this quaint space. Hearing that custom sandwiches ($5.99) are made to order, we ordered a bologna and also a deli ham, made of regular wheat bread, deli meat, sliced white cheese (couldn't tell if it was mozzarella or provolone?) tomato, and one had a very hearty dark lettuce. We really like this place and have come here with my Russian in-laws for both the store and eating in their restaurant. They're not allowed to serve alcohol (fine with me!) but my brother in law wanted a drink and couldn't get one while dining there. Nevertheless, service was great and I loved their syrniki. Someone working there told me what kind of cheeses they use to make it and I was able to buy both there, although my syrniki didn't turn out as good as theirs of course. My husband likes to get kvas there and we've gotten their pelmeni which is quite tasty. The food was outstanding - herring in a fur coat, blintzes, pelmeni, pierogi, stuffed cabbage, blini with red caviar, beet salad. Russian potato salad.... Plus dessert. Many would also recognize this as ashkenazi food. Oksana was absolutely lovely to work with and put everything together beautifully. All I had to do was serve. This place is the real deal. I immediately felt right at home ordering a piping hot bowl of borscht with a health dollop of smetana and a dusting of dill, perfectly cooked kotleti with potatoes, and eggplant rolls stuffed with walnuts. My boyfriend got the pelmeni and almost licked the bowl clean they were so good. All this washed down with a cold Baltika 6 was just perfection. The service is very kind and welcoming and I love the little details of restaurant's interior (lace curtains, Russian game shows blaring on the tv, etc.) Added bonus is they have all my favorite Russian candies (mishki!! korovka!!) in the grocery store adjacent to the restaurant. This is in a strip mall next to the social security administration. At first I thought this was just a European Foods store, but when you get inside, there's also a restaurant. I am addicted to this place!  They are the only place in the area that makes REAL Russian homemade food.  Their borsch is the best; their pelmeni (homemade dumplings) are amazing; their Hungarian goulash and beef stroganoff are wonderful.  When they make their piroshky in the morning, the entire Aurora Ave smells like the grandma's kitchen.   Additionally, the huge selection of the European groceries!  The salamis, sausages, smoked fish, excellent choice of chocolates...   Just the thought of European Foods always makes me hungry!  These guys are amazing! read more

I actually shed a few tears of joy when I walked in to this fabulous store. I felt like I was inside my Babushka's pantry and fridge! I was able to get herring in oil here which I needed for a dish Herring "under a fur coat" I was trying to replicate from a cookbook. This store had everything!! I also tried their homemade Piroshki which hit the spot (not as good as my own mother's but the dough was perfect). I also brought up their homemade cheese blintz which they keep stored in their freezer. All amazing! read more
