The service was horrible. I felt uncomfortable the minute I walked in and while eating here. My boyfriend and I normally go to tofu houses and order the combo that comes with one tofu soup and one bulgogi dish. It's always more than enough food for us to share. After ordering, the waitress confirmed if that's all we're getting like she was not okay with it. Her face was obviously bothered. Then she goes to take care of all her existing customers, 3 tables, that are finishing up their meal. She ignores us the whole time, chats with her Korean customers, and our banchan(side dishes) never came out before the meal. It was the longest I've had to wait for tofu soup. All the customers have left and we were never asked if we needed anything else even when it was obvious we needed tissue and refills of the banchan. The tables were left unclean with dishes piled up. All the food was delicious, hence the 2 stars, but overall I wouldn't want to come back. Finally we asked for the bill and I told her I have the yelp check in, 10% off, and she gave me the most rude, confused, and annoyed face. Again, her face was obvious. Great mul nangmyeon! It was a hot summer evening that my sister and I moved to LA, and I was so pleased to see these cold noodles on their menu. Maybe it's just tough to find this dish in cold NorCal, but I don't often see mul nangmyeon served on the regular! Hope to re-visit this location soon. Stopped in for lunch, ordered cabbage soup and spicy pork lunch. One side dish was something I've never seen before, so naturally it was first thing I tried. It looked like squid or snails??? This place is a great place to eat when I'm craving korean soup or korean comfort food. You walk in and two nice ladies greet you and seat you down with some cold barley tea. From the menu, they have a lot of soups and noodle dishes that are savory and flavorful. I ordered the bean paste stew with a green onion pancake. The banchan made up of bean sprouts, radish, greens, mushrooms and of course kimchi. Very simple yet delicious. When my dish came out.. I was surprised by the portion sizes! The green onion pancake was so large that it could count as a entree. My bean paste stew (thankfully) was in a small pot. The taste of the stew was so clean and refined yet simple made me feel relaxed. It was absolutely delicious! Every time I'm in the mood for some duk gook (rice cake soup) or dwen jang jigae (bean paste soup), I come here and I always leave satisfied. The food here is very close to my mom's cooking but since she doesn't cook for me anymore, this place is the perfect substitute for some authentic homemade Korean food. I especially like this place because it's one of the last remaining mom and pop shops in the valley. I tend to stick to the jigaes (stews) and they're all really good. I especially recommend the maewoon tang (spicy seafood soup). It's incredibly flavorful, the seafood is always fresh, and the pungent spiciness really clears your nasal passages. If you start sweating profusely, it's okay. That's supposed to happen. There's plenty of parking, service is always friendly, prices are cheap, and there's even a lunch special Monday through Friday. So why bother driving out all the way to k-town when we have even better food right here in valley? read more

Hey, this isn't the area of LA I usually think about to go for Asian food but this place is definitely worth visiting if you are in the valley. Great place to go if you want quality homestyle Korean food without the hassle of going to Koreatown. I came on a Wednesday night and there was no problem parking and no wait. I heard it gets busy on the weekend nights. What is most striking upon entering the place is how welcoming and friendly everyone is. The owner came out to greet us with a big smile and was super sweet in asking what we wanted. The place is really nicely decorated and clean. We ended up sharing a bowl of tofu and fish egg soup. We also had the grilled mackerel. We got plenty of side dishes (banchan) and a bowl of rice. Banchan was typical in variety and was solid. The soup was really nice and refreshing. I enjoyed the tofu and the fish egg, which had an interesting texture . The mackerel was definitely the highlight of the meal. The fish was cooked perfectly and was amazingly tender and yummy. We made an effort not to eat too many of the generous banchan so as to leave enough room for the dishes. I definitely would order the spicy pork next time since I had it for takeout a while back. The red hot sauce they use on their spicy chicken and pork is the bomb! In sum, this place provides a great laid-back atmosphere with solid homestyle Korean food. My first impression was, "One of those hidden gems for home-cooked Korean food." I stumbled across Evergreen while on the hunt for Korean food in the Valley. It's limited, and there aren't too many out there, but Evergreen is a good one out of the few. If you want to try some real Korean food, besides just saying you've had Korean BBQ, start off at Evergreen. They have a variety of authentic Korean dishes and the food is rich and flavorful. I ordered the Chicken Potato Stew in a hot pot to share, and the portions were huge. Served with rice and Korean banchan (sides) you'll have a complete Korean meal. Perfect for those cravings without a drive out to LA for good Korean food. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the prices are what you would expect from most Korean restaurants. Of course, adding the hot pot was a little more expensive, but nothing beats some classic stew in a hot pot. Brings back memories of eating at home! The lasting impression? I've been craving Korean BBQ lately, and am glad to say I've found this restaurant: Yelp once again proves it's value for good recommendations, as the food was excellent. As Malida says, Evergreen is a smallish place located right next door to a bigger Korean BBQ "all you can eat" (AYCE) place, and oddly enough, Evergreen didn't even come up in a Yelp search for "Korean BBQ". (Presumably this is because Evengreen's tag data is simply "Korean"). Fortunately, I looked it up by the name ("Evergreen", which I saw on the exterior signage). I assume the reason is because while they DO offer the typical Korean BBQ fare, their specialty is other Korean dishes (like spicy squid and roe). But since it was my first time here, and I was really craving BBQ, I stuck with my cravings. At any rate, service was prompt, friendly, and welcoming. I know it can be intimidating for some non-Asians to walk into a strange restaurant (esp. if a newbie to Korean food), but there were no such concerns here: I was greeted with a warm smile. The well-lit and open utilitarian dining area was actually more welcoming to me than the booth-seating offered next door. All well and good, you say, but what of the food? Glad you asked! I walked in at 9 PM (they're open until 10 PM), and if I could pick only one adjective (yeah, right, like I could!!), I would have to say I was impressed by the FRESHNESS of the meat and side dishes. That's the acid test for ANY restaurant, in my opinion: any restaurant can offer fresh offerings at 1 PM, but the challenge is what they serve to their customers late in the evening. In this case, the meal and side dishes (kimchee, tofu, cucumbers, bean sprouts, etc) tasted freshly-prepared, not pre-made (I know, kimchee cannot exactly be whipped up in a hurry, hence it's an oxymoron to expect "fresh" kimchee; I am reminded of Steve Martin's character in "The Jerk" who ordered "a bottle of your freshest wine" at a French restaurant). The other adjective that comes to mind as I was enjoying the food was the SUBTLETY of flavors. Let me explain: Many Korean restaurants tend to hit you over the head with the chile powder, which is somewhat of a cop-out, an easy party-trick (it's no culinary feat to drown a stale cucumber in chile sauce, or soak the beef in BBQ sauce). What I appreciated was how the Evergreen chef didn't over-do it with the spices, hence allowing the flavor of the food to come through. This applies to the beef and side dishes, where the sauces and spices accentuated the flavor, not overwhelming it. Bottom line: there are other Korean restaurants throughout the SFV, but Evergreen goes near the top of my list, well worth the drive to the Lake Balboa neighborhood. FWIW, I always support smaller owner/proprietors, where possible, and these folks clearly understand excellent customer service and commitment to quality. read more

The waitresses are SO RUDE. Maybe it's because we're not Korean or maybe it's simply how they do, but regardless it's NO way to run business. We felt like we were being ignored because it was so incredibly difficult to get help in a tiny room of a dining area, and when the waitress did come around, she acted as if we owed her MAJOR for waiting on us or something. Where on earth did her attitude come from? What's worse, there was a young Korean couple sitting across from us, and she was soooooo nice to them. Even stopped by a couple times to check up without them asking for her. The difference was like night and day!! If that's not insulting, I don't know what is. Usually I don't rate based on service, but this was way too much. Doesn't matter how authentic the food is; the attitude was a little too authentic for me to handle. A nice traditional Korean family-style restaurant, populated mostly by Korean couples and groupings of relatives. Evergreen serves the gamut of Korean food, and it's generally pretty good! While AYCE is the craze for many (typically Americans and youngsters who can actually digest mounds of food), this is NOT an AYCE place, nor is it a Korean BBQ place with gigantic exhaust systems. It's a modest, fluorescently-lighted place with simple tables. Evergreen does serve Korean BBQ of various varieties, but they cook it and bring it out to you. Typically when I go there, I have bimbimbap in a heated stone bowl, which a perfect healthy dish of veggies, egg, a little bit of beef, and rice. The stone bowl cooks the egg and crisps everything else. You add in Korean red pepper sauce as needed, but if you aren't into spicy, they'll gladly substitute soy sauce. It's an excellent dish. My spouse and I get that every week. I've had pork spine stew there with my bro Howie G., and while it is excellent flavor-wise, it's skimpy when compared to the king of pork spine stew places in LA, Gamja-Gol in Koreatown. There the size of the rib bones is gigantic, and there's a lot more succulent meat on those bones. Plus the size is larger when getting the gamja-jeongol (the communal pot). They will, however, make the kimchee fried rice at the end, which is always awesome. I've had a really nice seafood and green onion pancake here, along with several fish dishes. The soups are great, including the young spring chicken soup with gensing. The galbi and other BBQ are really nice and flavorful too. Banchan are always excellent. The menu is actually extensive. And I'm ALWAYS welcomed very warmly by the ladies who operate the restaurant. While there's a great AYCE/Korean BBQ place next door that's also excellent, if I want simply good Korean food without "atmosphere", this is my preferred place. Their kimch is Korean traditional very sour but no sweet, which is not my favorite. Other pickles and small dishes are ok, not great. Price is good thou. It's not a fast service but it's alright. This is one of the few Korean restaurants that my family frequents. We usually order the lunch specials. My brother loves the naengmyeon (buckwheat noodle soup) + galbi (beef short rib) combo. I like the dolsot bibimbap (hot stone pot rice), since it's classic comfort food for me. We also like the haemul pajeonn (seafood pancake), which makes for a good appetizer. The price is decent. There probably are cheaper Korean places in Koreatown, but it's not bad by any means. I like the variety of banchan (small side dishes) that come out. The decor inside is comfortable, and I appreciate the wide spacing between the tables to keep the small space from feeling crowded. It's true that you see many older Koreans eat here. Some non-Korean reviewers have noted receiving worse service than Korean diners, or having Korean patrons treat them unkindly. I haven't noticed that myself, although I've never been to this restaurant with a non-Korean friend. While I would hope that the staff here don't treat non-Korean or non-Asian patrons differently, I recognize that it may happen. It seems that some non-Korean customers were treated well, while others were treated poorly. If you're hankering for some good Korean food in the San Fernando Valley, I'd recommend that you check it out. read more

There's a big Korean restaurant that overshadows the Evergreen but they are nothing compared to this restaurant. The spicy squid and spicy pork are two of my faves on the menu. What I love about the squid is the spice that they use. It tastes so different from any other spicy squid that I've ever tasted, I'm obsessed! Also, they put rice cakes with the spicy squid... It's feels like I'm getting more bang for my buck instead of other places with hardly any squid and just vegetables. My experience has been amazing every time I'm there. I have had many korean foods before and personally this one was alright and a bit above par. I As for food chosen, I looked at the previous yelp recommends, and got a #21 dinner meal squid with hot sauce. The good thing was the plate was all squid, versus some asian restaurants in which there are a lot more sliced onions to hide the meal. However, what is spot on with the yelp reviews is that it is clean, and I did think the food was healthy. Even with hot sauce where there was not a poison of oil. In terms of the portion, I did end up bring home some and felt in regards to the price, I am satisfied like a regular meal to the price range. The sides were what I expected from a korean restaurant, and I always base my opinion on their kimchi which was a tad more acidic than I liked. However, they do serve rice with your meal that is included, and tea is no charge. so when they ask water or tea, tea is no charge. read more

We were misled by positive reviews and when we arrived we nearly went net door, which seemed a more popular place but we decided to stick with the more authentic (read threadbare no atmosphere) original choice. The service was not present without waving down. The prices were way overblown, the absolute worst one being (the reason that i feel compelled to write this review) was the kalbi ribs which we understood to be 21 per plate but were charged 32. 32 dollars for 10-12 tiny little bones with a tough thin ring of meat around them. barely a bite! Wasnt helpful for a party of 5. and wasnt good quality or spiced. The pancake was ok and the kimchi rice was ok. we had to ask for sauces to help the bimibap and other dishes. There were several tables open, but they slowly filled up as the evening progressed. The waitresses were very accommodating to our large party. Patrons watched the soccer game on the tv that hangs in the corner while waiting for their food. The decor is simple, nothing fancy, but I appreciated the casual atmosphere. There was some outdoor seating so I'll come back on a warmer day to enjoy that. While their banchans were paltry compared to some AYCE K BBQ, the food was great. The stews aren't necessarily my thing, but both my father and father-in-law (aka he-who-prides-himself-with-his-ability-to-eat-all things-spicy) enjoyed them. The rest of us opted for traditional bbq fare and it was yum. The food was reasonably priced ($88 bill for 5 adults and 2 kids) for dinner. The restaurant itself is tucked in right next to Fresh Korean BBQ at the SE corner in the Greenland Market Mall. So I have been wanting some bulgogoi for a long time and finally decided to try Evergreen after much Yelp searching. I have driven by the large imposing Korean complex that houses a seemingly small community of all things Korean, I finally had a reason to visit. I walked in and the place was empty save for one group of people dining-in. I walked to the counter and was greeted pleasantly and was offered a menu and was asked if I wanted my usual, which the lady had forgotten, I told here it was my first time, haha (I guess us white folk all look alike lol). I asked for an order of bulgogi and asked her to suggest a good noodle dish, she pointed to something which was about $8, so I said okay. I like to take recommendations from ethnic places whenever possible. I was told my total was $26 shocked and in a bit of a rush I paid, trying to figure out why it was so much. Now granted I could have asked but the language barrier was a bit high and so I thought I would just give it a go all the same. About 15 minutes later I got, three big styrofoam boxes, four tubs of something, and it was all wrapped in a large bag. I went home, and found one box to contain my bulgogi which I thought was just okay. One box with the 'sides', kimchi, bean sprouts, etc. A third was the box of noodles, they were the thin clean glass noodles with a bunch of vegetables which I did not care for at all. Two tubs of purple rice that was just alright. Also I had to cups of soup which tasted like dirty water with seaweed. All in all I was super dissapointed with the really high price and mediocre food. My favorite Korean place in the valley! I highly recommend Evergreen! LOCATION: It's small and a bit hidden within a plaza that has a decent-sized Korean market (Greenland Market) and beside a Korean BBQ place that can easily overshadow it, but not that hard to find. Plenty of free parking within the plaza too, which is kind of an enclosed parking lot instead of the stores being open and facing the street. You can enter from Sherman Way or White Oak. INTERIOR: The decor can be considered plain to some except for the photos of dishes posted on the walls. But they're not trying to win you over with decor. A small counter to order at if you're taking out, a small TV playing K-dramas or Korean news (or whatever is on the channel they're on, but I enjoy when I catch a drama because there are subs sometimes), a handful of tables to dine at with a couple tables outside. STAFF: I don't see very many because I'm sure most of them are in the kitchen but I usually see two or three people on visits. I can tell they don't always get as many non-Korean customers because whenever I call ahead for takeout, they always answer in Korean. But I don't mind, they're a patient and pleasant staff. They also usually serve you hot tea with your meal if you dine in. FOOD: Their fresh banchan is something I truly crave when I'm in the mood for Korean food, it's so good and plentiful. I haven't tried all the entrees but I love the Korean short rib and the soondubu/"soft bean curd stew with beef and seafood" (spice levels can be chosen). I've also tried the bibimbap, japchae, beef bone soup, and rice cake dumpling soups, all quite good. And the rice that comes with the meal is the "purple" kind with the beans mixed in, yum! I have yet to try the seafood pancake that people recommend because there's never enough room! They have great portion sizes for the non-soup dishes and I can usually bring some leftovers home for later, or leave with a very full and happy belly. This was my first time navigating in a real traditional Korean place. Very little English spoken here. That's the way I like my ethnic food places. I like being the only Caucasian in the joint. I don't know why but I've always had a bad impression of Evergreen... Maybe because it took forever for the food to come out? Or when I was younger, I was picky and didn't think there was much to choose from? Well, my mind has changed. My dad likes this place so I went with him one time. I was craving naengmyun (buckwheat noodles in cold, sweet beefy broth) and he said Evergreen had good naengmyun. The place could use some renovating but that's the beauty of these hole-in-the-wall joints. The side dishes are your typical Korean ones. The prices are okay. Not that cheap. They have lunch special deals Mon-Fr. Anyways I got my naengmyun and I have to admit that I enjoyed every single bite. I literally drank the broth out of the bowl. The broth was on the sweet side (but that's what I like). You can season it with vinegar and spicy mustard to balance out the flavor. There are a lot of traditional Korean dishes to choose from.. From pancakes to stews to meat dishes. Also, I noticed that the cooks in this restaurant are actually Korean! Most restaurants have Hispanics cooking (not that that's wrong!) but you know that the taste will be catered to an actual Korean's palate as opposed to just following a recipe. Searched Yelp for some Sulongtang in the valley that's not part of a supermarket 2 nights ago, and yelp came up with Evergreen which has lots of good reviews. But when I searched the address again this restaurant popped up! I believe Cho Yun is the new management but still using the Evergreen signage outside. In fact if you're driving on Sherman Way after turning right from White Oak, you would only see Fresh All-You-Can Eat Korean BBQ. These are all the same think now, I believe. So this review is based on the sulongtang and service only. The server came to get my order and asked me what to drink, he was very courteous. The other lady server came by later with the banchans which were all very delicious. There was even a mini appetizer of rice with some seaweed and carrot bits which was very savory and yummy. There was the usual kimchi, seaweed, cucumber, fishcake, bean sprouts and several other ones. I enjoyed all of them. She brought me the sullongtang with the condiments: more green onion, coarse salt, and red pepper paste. I added all the green onion and salt as well as a tiny but of the pepper paste to taste and it was exactly what I was looking for, it was homely and super satisfying. She also brought me a bowl of purple rice which was just so good. Next table over I saw a family having the AYCE BBQ. There's 2 different tiers, $14.99 for 4 meat options or $19.99 for 11 options. It smelled wonderful! I was surprised to find they allowed just some people at the table to order the AYCE while some of them ordered entrees instead, since usually they worry you would share the meat and require that all of you order AYCE and all at the same tier for the same meat options. I read Evergreen served authentic Korean food, so I thought why not! Overall a really decent spot for your Korean fix. Came here with the better half and her family. We ordered 5 things and I got to try most of them. Here's the list: 1. Seafood Pancake 2. Soon Doo Boo (Didn't get to try.) 3. Kalbi 4. Bulgogi 5. Duk Mandu Guk The Seafood Pancake was the best out of the bunch and probably the best I've ever had. I would definitely recommend sharing this with your group. Next came the Kalbi and Bulgogi- both were dry, but I guess this is not what they are known for? The Duk Mandu Guk was decent- soup base was tasty, but I was not impressed with the dumplings. I'm not sure if I've been spoiled with really good Korean food, but Evergreen did not blow me away. The food was decent and the service was awesome, so overall a nice place to hit up if you are in town. read more
