We were seated right away and were greeted by our server, Shawn. This young man was incredibly pleasant, attentive, and fast with his service. He was taking care of many tables, yet not once did he miss an order or fail to check on his guests. He was constantly pacing back and forth, taking orders, checking on patrons, and making sure everyone was taken care of. Shawn is truly a great asset to this establishment. Absolutely Outstanding -- Ask for Sam & Xavier! We brought a party of 27 to GEN Korean BBQ on a busy Friday night, and the experience was exceptional. A group that large could easily become chaotic, but Manager Sam Peñalosa and our server Xavier went above and beyond to make the entire evening smooth, fun, and memorable. Sam deserves serious recognition. You could see her leadership throughout the night. She was present, attentive, checking on our group, supporting his team, and making sure 27 people were taken care of. That kind of hands-on leadership creates the atmosphere customers feel..and her company should be proud to have her representing GEN. And Xavier was a rockstar! Twenty-seven guests means nonstop orders, questions, refills, requests, and moving parts. He handled everything with patience, energy, professionalism, and a great attitude. One of my favorite places to eat when I want Korean bbq. The food is always fresh and good and the staff is always attentive and friendly.

Update: We waited like 10minutes or could be more in the front because the front host was not there when we came in and this was at close to 12 noon I think. There was also couple ahead of us which they said that they've been waiting as well for someone to greet, assist and seat them to their table but no one came. After us a another group of family came in More people came in but still there's no front host and she's been MIA & when I looked around she was sitting in one of the empty tables by the window - wearing white longs sleever and black pants. Finally, 2 guy servers actually noticed that customers have been waiting for a while and no one was helping all of us in the front. I even overheard them asking each other and lookinb looking for the front host and one of them answered "she should be here but I have no idea why she's nit in the front". I think the management should retraine that specific host that's was on duty today around 12noon onwards, I mean she's in charge in the front so if she's on break she should communicate it with the back team to so that someone can keep an eye for new customers that are coming in the restaurant . Luckily those 2 guy servers were really nice and they seated all of us that's been waiting in the front for a while. Also, FYI on their weekday lunch pricing, I tried calling them prior to our visit and their recording says the price for M-Th - from opening to 3pm is $20.95 BUT THAT IS INCORRECT, the correct pricing is $21.95. Our server was nice and attentive and food was great 8/10 and changed our grill 3 times. The inky issue was that our meat took so long to come out which I think it is the kitchen staff's job to prepare not the servers. My tofu soup came out when I was almost full and dine - the server was actually apologetic and I dont blame him, I was told that the reason for the delay was because, the kitchen received many "to go or pick up orders" that the kitchen staff didn't have any space on the stove to cook my soup. We were also seated close to the kitchen towards the hallway to the restroom and WOW the kitchen staff's music was SO LOUD! Like I am so confused if I should be listening to the mariachi music that's coming from the kitchen or the english music that's from the dining area's speakers.... Like wow they should turn down that volume!! 1 star for the missing front host that's supposed to seat and greet the customers in a timely and professional manner and the delay on delivering the meat to the table and the very LOUD music. read more

We arrived at 11am on a Saturday. There was no line, but they did seem a little short staffed so we probably ended up waiting about 5 minutes to be greeted before sitting down. I'm not sure if they were short staffed, or they just have less servers in the morning, but it seemed like there were only two waiters available. Both servers reminded us that it would be dinner pricing on the weekend. I actually did not realize that, so I appreciated the heads up. I was in a group of four. We started off by ordering some soft drinks, which came out quickly. Our waiter, Anthony, went straight to business taking our meat orders, and informed us that we can order up to four meats per order (this does not include food from the kitchen). All the dishes came out promptly - I was impressed with how quick the cooked kitchen items came out. I think the first thing we received was the riblets, even before the meat orders. We usually stick to the usual beef belly, pork belly, and brisket. However, this time, I tried the bulgogi fries and dragon shrimp from the kitchen. We typically come for lunch, so I'm not sure if these were new items, or if they've always just been on the dinner menu. Overall, I feel that the quality of food and service is fair for the price. Dinner prices were $31.95pp. The meat was flowing at a decent rate, so we did not feel like we were hungry and waiting on food to arrive. read more

I've had some pretty bad experiences here, but today takes the cake. I joined the waitlist through Yelp, and it didn't take long to get seated. We sat down and waited at least 10 minutes just to be acknowledged, with no apology for the wait. We placed our order for two waters and one Coke. Our server came back with one water and two Cokes, and when we pointed out the extra Coke, she told us we could just keep it. Cool. We then waited another 10-15 minutes for the second water. We also weren't given scissors when we were initially seated, so I asked for a pair so we could cut up our meats and actually start eating. I also asked for a fork for my sister. She came back with the scissors and a spoon because they were "washing the forks right now." Needless to say, we never got the fork. On top of all of that, the vents at our table weren't working properly, so instead of the smoke being pulled away from the grill, I was basically inhaling it throughout the meal. Anyone who's been to KBBQ knows how much smoke comes off the grill, so having ventilation that actually works is pretty important. It made an already frustrating experience even more uncomfortable. Throughout the meal, the service continued to be extremely inattentive. It felt like we constantly had to wait or ask for basic things that should have already been provided. Then when we got the bill, we were charged for both Cokes. It's not about the extra $3, it's the principle. We ordered ONE Coke. The second one was brought to us by mistake, and our server specifically told us we could keep it. If we had been told we were going to be charged for it, we obviously would have sent it back. Charging us afterward for something we never ordered and were told to keep just left a really bad taste in my mouth. Between waiting to even be acknowledged, waiting for water, never receiving the utensils we asked for, sitting at a table with vents that weren't working, and then being charged for the server's mistake, the entire experience was disappointing. To get her attention again we literally have to wait awhile to get her attention. She just passes us like we're not there. Old plate stays at the table for ever!! Barely get any refills.!!! Pan stays smoking for too long and no one to turn it off or switch it out because no one knows where she is or willing to help. Plastic pieces in our water (sorry it's hard to see or might not even be visible, but I'm telling you it was there) Don't get me wrong the food was great and delicious. But to beg for service and basically beg for our server to come help us, that just takes over everything. The place itself is so spacious and lots of other tables are there. But the thing is they weren't even that busy. The 1 star is for the gentleman server (didn't get his name) that was not even our server but was checking and helping us more than her. My husband and I visited around 2:30PM, and the restaurant wasn't busy, with only a couple of other groups dining. Our original waiter was great, but shortly after taking our order, we were told he had to leave because it "wasn't busy enough" for him to stay. A different waitress took over. She was friendly, but the service didn't match the friendliness. Our drinks went unrefilled for most of the meal unless someone else offered to fill them and we had to place meat orders through other employees as well because she wasn't around. She also made multiple comments when we ordered additional meat, including "Oh, you want more?" which came across as unnecessary and made us feel uncomfortable. As for the food, the marinated meats were excellent and easily the best part of the meal. The non marinated meats were extremely fatty and lacked flavor. The photo I posted shows some of the fat we had to leave behind, along with a drink that sat waiting for a refill. We decided to have dinner at Gen Korean BBQ, and it turned out to be a disappointing experience from the moment we walked in. There was no hostess at the front, and when she finally appeared, she seated the first guests in line while we stood there waiting without so much as an acknowledgment. We eventually realized she was busy chatting and flirting with the guests she had just seated instead of helping the people still waiting at the entrance. It came across as unprofessional. The menu also needs to be updated. Several items we ordered were met with, "We no longer serve that," which was frustrating. Food arrived much slower than what we've experienced at other Korean BBQ restaurants, and we had to ask for basic items two or three times before they were finally brought to our table. Our server genuinely seemed to be trying his best, but it was obvious he was overwhelmed and frustrated. It probably didn't help that the restaurant was incredibly hot. The air conditioning either wasn't working or was so weak that it felt nonexistent, making the dining experience even more uncomfortable. Overall, this was one of the most disappointing Korean BBQ experiences we've had. Between the poor service, outdated menu, slow food, and uncomfortable dining environment, I can't recommend this location. There are much better Korean BBQ restaurants in the San Fernando Valley that offer better food, better service, and a much better overall experience. read more

Went here for lunch on a Wednesday.... As we walked in, there were two guys behind the counter, neither acknowledged us nor said hi or anything at-all. We waited for four minutes, just standing there, waiting for them. Then one looks at us and says 2? Follow me. He seats us, then the service is decent after that. The ordering and food came at a decent rate, not fast nor slow. The meat quality was WTF. The short plate looked like scrap meat, and when cooked, it was even tinier little pieces, almost looking like goldfish food. The pork jowl was ok, but it's slice thin. Other KBBQ places cut it thick, but most people do t understand how to properly slow cook it, so that's probably why they cut it so thin here, so it could cook fast. The garlic pork belly was the best. We cooked it nice and slow so that it would cook well and not burn. It was really good. The brisket is a joke too! The cut was bad, the slices are not sliced but rather, tiny leftover pieces. They are super lean too, no fat on them at-all. The fried stuff.... Fried chicken pieces were ok without the sauce, but ok doesn't cut it.... If everything is just ok or bad, it makes it not worth coming here to eat.. The Double Dragon (coconut shrimp and regular fried shrimp) was not great neither, something that I expected should be great! Definitely just the run of mill frozen stuff, not even the good stuff. One of the coconut shrimp was bad and soured too. The fish tastes like talapia, so that's not good, I would prefer a fish without a strong flavor. After leaving, your body and your clothes end up smelling better than the food you just ate. Btw, we only came here because Hanoo was not open yet, and I was willing to give Gen another chance. As soon as we got there the hostess was not in the front. Note we were first in line of the wait list and then three other families. When I got the notification to walk up to the front because the table was ready, the second family that arrived after us walked up to the hostess and asked to be seated. I walked up and notified her that we got notification that our table was ready and her response was, you have to wait they were here first. When that wasn't the situation. The hostess was rude and rolled her eyes at me and had an attitude since the beginning. She really needs to be trained on how to do her job. We drove all the way from Calabasas because we genuinely love this place, despite the long drive. Unfortunately, today's experience was a huge disappointment. The new server , young female who assisted us was rude from the very beginning. I ordered my usual meal and requested double beef belly, but she immediately responded in an unfriendly and unprofessional manner, saying it couldn't be done. Since I've ordered it before, I asked to speak with the manager. The manager approved my request without any issue. After making me wait, she came back with double brisket instead of double beef belly and was about to argue with me again about my order, even after the manager had already approved it. At that point, I lost my patience. Good food is one thing, but customer service matters just as much. We have always enjoyed coming here, but this experience left a very bad impression. I hope management provides better training on professionalism and customer service, because no customer should feel like they're being argued with over a simple order. I'll start with the positives. The food was excellent. You could tell the quality of the meat was high, it was marinated really well, and everything was full of flavor. They were also very generous with the seasoning. The vegetables looked freshly cut and tasted fresh. That said, there were two things that took away from the experience. First, the restaurant was extremely hot. The moment we walked in, the heat was very noticeable. I'm not sure if the air conditioning was off, broken, or if something else was going on, but it made dining much less comfortable. The other issue was the service. Our main server, I believe her name was Roxanne, came across as uninterested and not very welcoming. Of course, everyone can have an off day, but her demeanor made us feel like we were inconveniencing her. Later, another server, Ashley, helped us for a short time, and the difference was immediately noticeable. She was friendly, attentive, and made us feel much more comfortable. Overall, the food alone would have earned five stars, but because of the uncomfortable temperature and inconsistent service, I'm giving it three stars. After 8 years of being a loyal customer, I'm officially done with this location. The food is still great, but the service has completely fallen apart over the last 6 months. Our experience was unacceptable from start to finish. We waited 45 minutes after ordering before any food arrived. Then we had to wait another 15 minutes before anyone even turned on our grill. To make things worse, the grill itself was dirty, and we were given dirty utensils. Out of the 7 meats we ordered, only 3 ever made it to our table, and we never received any of the sides we ordered. We repeatedly tried to get someone's attention, but nothing was done. The manager spent most of the time on his phone instead of helping the staff or checking on customers. There was no sense of urgency, no apology, and no concern that half our order never arrived. It's incredibly disappointing to see a restaurant that provided excellent service for years decline this badly. The food may still be good, but the service is terrible and completely ruins the experience. We'll gladly drive the extra hour to the Cerritos location rather than ever return here. It was over an hour we waited we went in to check and they said they took us off the waiting list I don't know why, but I heard all the other parties names getting called. They said they needed to talk to the manager to see if they can seat us, they took a while and said it would be 2 minutes to get seated but it was way longer. We had two tables, and only one table got our meats, they were out of many things. I think more of the employees need more experience, and more consistency & better communication as a team. We went here during lunch time after a long morning for my pinning ceremony. We came here because it was the closest kbbq and my diabetic mother needed to eat already. We were a party of 6 and when we got seated no one came to us right away. The service was really slow that the manager stepped in. The manager was on it and helping us out but for awhile we didn't get meat. The meat took so long to get to us like 15 minutes after we sat that the grill was already turning brown from the fire being on. The brisket was good but the brisket was really hard. When we arrived at the table, we noticed my side of the seat was broken "picture for reference" We sat at the table for at least 20 minutes no water, no menu no nothing. I'd say we saw her three times counting the initial interaction with a 20+ minute gap between each time.
