+2 stars for ethical manufacturing practices from a traditionally online retailer. -3 stars for extremely poorly execution of a physical retail store. Everlane sacrificed ease of customer use through extreme limitations on variety of options and an ornery sales staff. The store is designed more as an art gallery than a clothing retailer. There are 20-30 identical shoes displayed beautifully, but seemingly not to allow customers to experience the depth and breadth of Everlane offerings. Whoever designed the space clearly focused on form over function. It seems like an attempt at the the iconic Apple stores, but with only 1/50th of the retail offerings. Imagine walking into an Apple store where only one TYPE of iPhone or laptop were displayed . Why even have a retail store if potential customers can't actually try on and purchase your goods? How silly! My advice to Everlane HQ: Either ditch the store altogether for a billboard or design one that is more representative of what you sell. Specific advice to Everlane HQ: Consider the SF Mission vibe store might benefit from a little softness. For example, I came to buy the the Day Heel only to find the suede NOT available at the store. The sales woman also took it as a personal affront when I wanted to try a larger size of the shoe. She claimed she did NOT recommend I even try that size, and then left for 10 minutes never to return. Is it an insult to try a different size? Someone else finally brought the shoe for me. The day heel has a short rounded front and uncomfortable elastic back which was such a disappointment considering how I've been eyeing it online and made a schlep to the store in order to make the right selection (the first time). Lastly, the shoe was worn on the bottom and the lady told me Everlane shoes are not guaranteed to be new. I'm all for buying second hand, but leather shoes mold to fit specific feet after a few wears. For a company dedicated to ethical retail, it seems like a better use of resources (shipping packages, adding to traffic congestion, and delivery truck emissions) to avoid shipping various sizes (until customers find the right size) by having more availability in the store. I have never felt less welcome in a retail store. Not a single person greeted me as I came in, though one associate was sure to breeze past me and chat with another associate who was sitting with a laptop. As I walked around, arms laden with clothing, still not a single remark from anyone, though the store had few other customers. When I went to look at the shoes, an associate standing around, made clear eye contact with me while I picked up a shoe and tried it on, but still not a peep. The people who work here seem much more interested in fraternizing with each other and standing around sullenly than actually doing their jobs. Management should give them all a lesson in basic civility. The clothing is also not ideal if you are tall. I will NEVER be back. read more

I came by to make a return and pick up another shirt. It was really busy so no one greeted me, which was fine. The workers seem VERY serious about their job. Take that for what you will. The line was really long but it moved fast. The man helping me was nice and fast. It was super hot inside and outside the store so they had free bottled water, which was a nice touch. Dear management, Why are your employees so rude and seemingly unhappy with their jobs? I've been in your store four times now and each time I feel un welcomed by your staff and if I do attempt to speak to someone- I am met with disinterest and curt demeanor. As a physical representation of your brand- I think it would greatly improve a customers' experience and remain true to your purported image of approachability and transparency if your staff presented a more engaged and caring attitude. Not only does your staff look unhappy, they can be heard complaining about mundane retail-related gripes. Additionally, being so tech driven, you would think checkout could be done anywhere in the store? I have to say, once you get over the minimalist Japanese/Scandinavian look of the store- you are left with a bunch of snooty sales associates and pastel t shirts. Personally, I don't need sales assistants to be overly friendly and though some did seem a little joyless, they were helpful enough. Limited selection of what's online, and though I love Everlane's transparency as a company, I'd love to see them be more size inclusive to larger sizes, wider feet, and petite and taller people. That's obviously not an issue with this specific store though and I understand they have different resources than larger companies. I'm 5'0" and don't mind getting my clothes hemmed or tailored but I'll probably stick to the tops only since I have never tried on a single pair of pants that fit well enough here. It's nice having the physical store here to try on things on, especially if you're short, tall, large, in between sizes, etc. The total star of this store is the rly tall blonde woman who was super helpful and attentive in the shoes section. I didn't catch her name, and I didn't need much help from her because all the shoes to try on that were on display came in my size, but she was helping another group of customers and just witnessing how kind she was made me so happy and excited to purchase and return here. ordering from the store to your home also ships faster than shopping online, which is especially helpful if you don't live in the city. read more

I shop online. Came to visit SF for a couple of days and wanted to give the store a try despite the bad reviews. I expected so much from this store. I was sad they didn't have a large selection of the Work Pants. That's what I was hoping to get. I did try their jeans for the first time, I ended up getting the high rise ankle in light blue wash. Although I got the things I originally did not plan on getting without the long wait, I was mostly disappointed with the service. I do want to mention though - when I came in I was greeted by the cashier and had a brief convo since it was my first time. So kudos to that guy. That was the only other positive thing. I've worked in retail. And I'm not saying you have to be overly friendly. But I walked into that store without getting acknowledged by the sales associates. It wasn't until when I came out of the dressing room to get a size when I was approached by 2 sales associates. Probably worried I was going to mess something up.. I know how that goes. It wasn't even busy. There were about 5 of them that day just walking around, talking or folding. You'd think I at least would get asked how I was doing. so I'm a long time supporter of Everlane, but rarely come into the stores as it's usually super busy and hectic, especially this location. ( I love their stuff - eco friendly, their quality, style and for the price - what more can you ask for?!) but dont let my love of Everlane fool you this review - I based it purely on the experience coming into the store. :) when I do come in, it's usually normal and nothing crazy exceptional or terrible, just your normal visit to a retail store. but on 12/18, a Saturday , before the christmas holiday no less, the experience was honestly impeccable! I was greeted when I came in , super friendly. There were so many people in the store and mini line forming to check out, so I was pleasantly surprised. I returned a crap load of stuff, person was super helpful and friendly and suggested i look for my exchanges and come back to her. looked at some jeans a little bit, looked like I was weighing some options, someone came by and asked if I needed help - super friendly, informative and even helped me to the sign up for the fitting room. super quick, also super friendly person. After trying on a few items, that same checking in person came by to see if I needed any sizes, and got them for me. And again checked in later to see how it was all going, and took all the items away that I didnt want. got in line for the cashier and the person helping me earlier finished off my visit, super efficient, helpful, friendly (again) , pleasant, and helped me order a size on an item that they didnt have in store with FREE express shipping and the same discount that I had before (SCORE!), and since I bought something new as well as the exchange that was over $75, I got a special free mug they were giving away that day. shout out to that team and whoever was managing that day - I can truly tell it was a team effort in how they were running the place from the front to the back of the store. They even made sure I was doing okay by asking me "are you doing okay" multiple times within minutes of each other. You definitely need to temper your expectations when going to this store. The design of the store is really nice and clean, but you can definitely tell this is a first-time brick and mortar experience for the company. This is not a great representation of all the variety the company has to offer online, which does kind of suck but if you know that in advance, then you wouldn't be as disappointed. It's nice that this store is right by the Bart station and you can do in-store returns of things you buy online. I wouldn't recommend to actually shop here unless it's for something really specific that they actually have in stores. Terrible customer service. If you want to go and feel unwelcome, uncomfortable and like your presence is annoying to the cashiers and staff make sure to do that in this store, apparently they don't care if you have questions, or if you don't want to be part of the data base to become a customer, they simply don't give the customer the choice, and return or exchange seems to cause a huge deal for the staff which they are train to say they all are managers so you feel trapped and don't complain to their supervisors. Simple store with clean lines, wide open space and I wasn't overwhelmed with a huge selection. Customer service was just right, not too attentive or solicitous. The very patient cashier up front put up with my multiple requests for different styles, colors of the Day Heel--which btw, get you one and your feet will love you for it; except the suede has a little bit of give because of the material so try sizing down. They didn't have my size so he offered free 2-day shipping. He deftly handled a line of 5 deep--all millenials and hipsters who had cash to burn on 80$ sweatshirts--props for that. read more

Absolutely love the clothing here, but YIKES!!! The store experience from entrance to check out is a monstrosity to brick and mortar businesses. This store is a perfect example of why most consumers would rather shop online than in store. Entry: There was a completely unnecessary line to get in. And I stood there getting ridiculed by people walking by asking if I was waiting in line for food or what the heck was so special about this place that we'd wait to get in. Nope. Sorry, I'm just waiting in line to get in a relatively empty clothing store so I can learn once I'm inside that there's nothing that fits me. Sales floor: Here's the no sizes part. In their best products they only had 00-0 and then 12-16. Where are the 2's to 10's? I'm a size 4 or 6 here. Why did I wait outside with the sun beating down on my face to not find anything cute in my size? The only person that offered me help was the woman at the denim wall that clearly didn't want any of the customers to ruin her folding or sizing. I just excused myself because she was literally hovering over any customer touching the denim. Fitting room: Line to get in the fitting room. At this point I've damn near had enough. I decided not to try anything on, but was going to wait for one of my girlfriends to try her stuff on. The individual room size of each fitting room was so spacious, but unnecessary. They easily could make each room smaller and utilize more of the completely empty store space to build additional rooms. My girl friend came out of her room to show me some of the clothes, but there was no fitting room attendant around to grab additional sizes for her... so that turned into my job. Totally ok because I love my friend. I even thought about grabbing sizes for the girl in the fitting room next to my friend because I felt bad no one was helping her and she kept peeking her head out probably looking for help. There would be a significantly shorter line for the fitting room if there was a competent attendant that could run sizes and offer fit and style advice. Register: OF COURSE there was a line at the register. Only one person ringing where there are 3 registers. There's a ridiculous little sign at the register that says they don't take cash because credit card transactions will make the line go faster. I call BS on that. Let it be known that I did notice several employees walking up and down the stairwell behind the "be transparent with us about your experience" iPads so it's not like they were short staffed. Maybe pull the "bouncer" in from outside to hop on a register? I'm seriously appalled by this store. Get it together... or get back into Nordstrom stores because whatever you're doing now isn't working. read more

I made my way down to the Everlane store just for the sole purpose of purchasing a bag. I had never owned anything Everlane before so I wanted to feel it, touch it, try it on, before purchasing. After circling the area for 20 mins, I finally land a parking spot right in front of the store and paid for 14 mins worth of parking ($0.50). I go inside and did not get greeted. Fine, since there were other shoppers in the store and they seemed to be cared for. Except that there were at least 2 associates (that were not helping anyone) who greeted other shoppers but me. Anyway, back to the product.. what I was looking for was not there. They obviously try hard with the minimalistic look, but it sucks that I didn't know what I wanted was online only. It would have been super helpful if this was somehow marked on the website. I'm looking at the website now and I realize a ton of the products were not available in store. Was always interested in this local brand so when I realized I was in the neighborhood after brunch, we decide to stop by to check out the quality. There was a line outside of the store. When I peaked in, the store wasn't even packed or busy. The girl who was managing the line didn't even know how long the wait was. 1. There is usually a block-long line just to get in the store. 2. Stock, sizes, and colors are SUPER limited. In the four times I've visited, I have NEVER been able to find the items I want in the color + size that I need and have always needed to order online. Also, sizing is all over the place so be sure to try on your size for different products. I've ranged from size 0 to 8 and Small to Large. 3. Customer service is a hit or miss - there are either 5 people all watching you like a hawk, or there is NO ONE. When I was trying on items in the fitting room, I needed a new size but no one was there to help me. I went and grabbed the proper size and returned to the fitting room. Upon returning, I got scolded about how I should have asked a sales attendant to grab a size for me and in the next 5 minutes, THREE different sales associates asked me if I needed a different size. 4. A plus I guess is that you can cut the line outside the store if you're returning something. read more

I give this store 2 stars for help on the floor only because I was asked if I needed help with anything. If it wasn't for this, I'd give this store 1 star. I've purchased a few things from here online - high rise jeans that are way too rigid and "summer" cotton dresses that have now become nightgowns because they shrank, lost their shape, and wrinkled after one wash. Also, with 5 people in line to check out, there was only one cashier and about 10 people on the floor so checking out took a longer than needed amount of time. They have seating right next to the shoes, but there was only one mirror which was disappointing because it can get a bit crowded. Waited about 15min on a sunday afternoon and it started to sprinkle light rain. It was very nice that they offered us an umbrella, appreciated that. Main issue with the place was the mix of nice and rude staff. Nobody approached me and most of the staff seemed snooty. It would be nice if the staff was more friendly and attentive to their customers instead of being only focused on talking on their walkies. I'm giving 3 stars because I love the brand, but I was disappointed with the shopping experience here. First of all, you have to wait in line to get inside. When I came on Saturday at noon, there were only about 8 people in line, so I didn't think it would be too long of a wait - but we still waited for about 30 minutes. I understand that they don't want the small store to be too crowded, but even as many groups of people left the store, it took a long time for them to let new groups inside, which didn't make sense to me. After you get in, you have to head straight to the fitting room and get a buzzer, because there's a line for that too. That wait was shorter at least -I was still browsing when mine went off. I tried on a lot of things, but as others have noted, they don't have a lot of sizes or colors available in the store (except for new releases - there was a lot of selection for their new wrap dress). I ended up leaving with the beautiful wrap dress, which I'm very happy with, but none of their silk or cashmere they're so well-known for because they didn't have many sizes of colors. Maybe I'll come back here when the hype dies down, but I think I would prefer to shop online. A tip: If you're only making a return, they let you skip the line. E-commerce review: I've known about Everlane since it's inception but at the time I wasn't interested in their stuff bc I was into another brand which I'm no longer a fan of. Now that I've fully transitioned into a sustainable closet, I started paying attention to Everlane to fill in some of the gaps in pieces I need. Everlane carries high quality basics that are versatile and seasonless. The company practices ethical business values that they make transparent to consumers in their website; they are headquartered in San Francisco. There's no B&M store here in L.A. but I hope they would open one someday. Denim is hard to gauge when you can't try it on but after a week of careful thought and reading reviews, I finally purchased online. I was actually quite nervous that it might not fit me properly but when I received it and tried it on, the style and fit was just perfect! Plus the fabric was thick too (similar to my Levis). Like with everything Everlane, I love how it's plain and simple without any tags or logos visible in the exterior - very clean and minimalistic! LOVE IT! It's worth mentioning that their packaging is also environmentally conscious and reusable. There are also other companies out there that follow ethical and environmental practices like Everlane. Hopefully big corporations would follow suit to make an impact in the world and influence consumers' habits. read more

I'm writing this while waiting in their ridiculous line- my second so far. There are literally 10 people inside the store yet about 60 people outside waiting and no, this is not their grand opening. When I was in the outside line waiting the girls walking up and down said the purpose of this was that so when we got inside we wouldn't have to wait at all- for a fitting room or to pay. Yet here I am, sitting inside on a bench with a buzzer next to 9 other people waiting to try on my clothes and this line is even longer than the one outside. Then they forgot to buzz my number so I had to ask after I saw people go in the fitting room before me. This is like the equivalent of a restaurant host lying to you and telling you the wait is 5 min when really it's 45. It's infuriating. Not only that but they don't even have any inventory! No sizes or colors and they keep telling people to order online. I'm sorry- then why are we all here shopping in your brick and mortar store?! Everlane... tbh this place should be called everLINE cause they've bought into the whole lining up for us makes us ~exclusive~ and ~hip~ and ~trendy~ bs. I waited in line for like 15 minutes with a friend - an employee overseeing the line tried to placate us by saying that they wanted to keep the customers inside to a minimum to really elevate their shopping experience (fine - though waiting in an unnecessary, fabricated line doesn't do it for a lot of people). She then lied to us about the capacity of the space and rattled on about the fire marshal only allowing x amount of people (not fine). I asked her about the square footage and called her out on her numbers because damn, I didn't get my B. Arch for nothing. If and when I need to buy something from here, you'd best believe I'd purchase it online. read more

The only thing I would mention is that they require the original shoe box to return shoes. They fortunately made an exception for me because I explained that I was returning them on behalf of my mom who was traveling and therefore did not pack a whole shoe box. Wow I am so shocked at all of the negative reviews that the SF Everlane location has received. Granted, I definitely drank the Everlane kool-aid a few years ago, but I don't think that many of the 1 star reviews are warranted. I visited the store on opening day and waited in that godforsaken line for almost an hour and a half. But a line for a brand this popular should be expected, and Everlane made the wait so much more bearable by giving us free canvas tote bags and pins. Once we made it into the store, there was also free wine (!) as a thank you for waiting so long. The customer service I experienced in the fitting rooms was impeccable. All of the employees were so helpful and gave me and my friend great advice on the clothing items we purchased. We were able to take our time in the fitting rooms and never felt rushed. Not to mention, the lighting in the store is amazing and made the whole trying-on process so much less painful. Life is better when there isn't fluorescent lighting highlighting all of your lumps and stretch marks. I came back the following weekend and yes there was still another hour long wait, but they gave out free boba this time. I understand Everlane's rationale for keeping the occupancy low because I hate shopping in crowded stores. And honestly, if you don't want to wait in a line then don't wait in a freaking line! My second visit was a little less pleasant because the customer service wasn't as great as opening day. The store was out of several sizes of popular items, which means that they need to anticipate demand a little better. When I asked several employees on the floor about sizing and fit for certain items, they weren't very helpful and seemed disengaged. However, my fitting room experience the second time was just as great as opening day. I think it's important to note that on opening weekend, I recognized many employees from the original Everlane Lab on Folsom. I noticed that there were more unfamiliar faces working during this second visit, which may be why the customer service on the floor wasn't as great. Hopefully it was a fluke! Suggestions to make the store better: - Add more items. I get the whole minimalism/clean thing but I think it's important that customers can try on more items in person than simply guessing online. That's the point of a brick and mortar store. - Train new employees to reach levels of customer service excellence that older employees have, or hire nicer people. Obviously new employees won't have as much knowledge, but you don't need experience to be friendly or engaged. - Change store layout. I do think that there could be a better utilization of space, as the register area NEVER has a line and takes up a lot of space. Some of that space could be used to stock more clothing items. Things I love about Everlane: - Ethical and quality clothing. Some people in the reviews are complaining about the quality of certain items and compare them to Forever 21, but I've had my Everlane t-shirts for almost 5 years and still wear them all of the time. I also feel way better knowing that a child isn't making my shirts/pants. - Customer service. When it's great, it's amazing! All of the employees wear Everlane pieces so I trust their advice when it comes to sizing and fit. And I just really love how helpful everyone is in the fitting room section. - The physical store. It's so clean and bright and well lit and because it's never packed, I have a very relaxed shopping experience. read more

I too, am super surprised about the low rating. I'm here to share my über POSITIVE experience today. While there is a line outside, after speaking with the Manager, she explained its bc there was a 15 person wait for the dressing rooms so they limit the people entering for several reasons: to allow for a free flowing shopping experience and manage the line forming on the inside. She also explained lines form typically on Friday afternoon through Sunday, so if you have the luxury of shopping on a weekday, you wouldn't experience any lines. Carrie, the Manager had Nordstrom level customer service, even searching inventory boxes to find my size for a dress she highly recommended. I loved it so much, I'm purchasing it and others in the additional color offerings. All the staff wear pieces from the line and it's like watching a living catalog, you get to ask about how the pieces wear and see how each piece fits on different bodies types, each putting their own style on the high quality basic pieces that every wardrobe should have! Modern essentials for the socially conscious customer---I'm forEVER a loyal customer, thanks to Carrie and her gracious and knowledgable staff! The atmosphere was light, airy, clean, fresh and organized! The staff could manage the folks roaming about so I never felt rushed I'm all set for the all white wedding in the Philippines I'm going to attend and will feel fresh and confident in my new dresses that I purchased. read more

Drove by almost two months ago and saw a long line during the grand opening day so I waited and came back today with a friend to check it out. I was so disappointed they made us waited over 15 minutes outside when the store wasn't even that busy inside. The excuses they were telling everyone was that a lot of people were waiting for the fitting room, and to help alleviate some of that waits that's why they make people wait outside. When we finally got inside, the fitting rooms didn't look that busy...lol... All I wanted to do was check out some of their products and feel the materials. Some of the stuff I saw online, I didn't see in the store. Also, the tops and jacket I did like, they didn't have XXS or XS in the store. First time at a everlane store and it was somewhat of a let down. I can see how having a store front would allow customers to try on their clothes and get a better idea about their sizing however, i was disappointed they did not have a lot of my size available. All the tops i really liked all were size 10-12. And it seems like they ran out a lot of the more popular items that that left me even more frustrated. I do like how they have almost all of their shoes available and also their denim. As for the other items, they really only had their most current style taking up most of the shelf. What I do like about the store: 1) friendly staff, 2) buzzer for the changing room - allowed you to still look at clothes while you wait, 3) all the denim styles were there What I disliked: 1) buzzer for the changing room - allowed customers to grab even more clothes to try on, and lengthening the wait time, 2) waited 30 mins to try on my clothes, 3) only had 6 changing room? Not many 4) they ran out a lot of popular sizes and styles 5) location is not ideal and away from the major shopping area. Really had to make a trip to this store only to be disappointed by lack of sizes Came here with Intention to break the bank, but left with nothing. TL;DR Good customer service, weirdly crowded in a store that is supposed to be "open and airy" and doesn't even have that many people inside, expensive clothing that can be good lasting quality but you must be wary of the claims made by the company; come in person to check yourself before buying, it makes a huge difference! Oh also, yes crazy lines - expect a 35-40 min wait on weekends. --- I agree with all the reviews about the line being crazy considering the number of people inside, but I couldn't skip up the opportunity to try on Everlane's clothing for size - and to see if the quality really was as good as it looked online. I came with a few friends on Saturday around noon and it took 35 minutes to get into the store. The exterior and interior of the store all match Everlane's aesthetic; open spaces, white and very brightly lit with skylights all around. When you go inside they give you a buzzer for the fitting room, once your buzzer rings it's your time to go in - which is a great way to keep people from lining up outside the small fitting rooms. As far as my shopping experience goes, the crowd inside seemed to build up slowly, when I first went in I felt like I could walk around pretty freely but toward the end of my visit I think they let a lot more people in, so I was fighting for space to sit to try on shoes - but the fact that I never had to worry about getting into the fitting room or wait for it was pretty great! One of the employees, Nick, really worked hard to help all three of us out. We all wanted to try on shoes and he made sure we got our shoes and sizes quickly and easily. He was also just really friendly! He was running around everywhere but made sure I was taken care of from start to finish and he answered all my questions about shoe width and which shoes would be best for wider feet (mostly none of them but the sandals and mules will be your best bet!) So thanks Nick!! Clothing is a hit or miss in quality and I was excited to be able to try on a few things I had looked at online - as a petite, 5'2" woman I feel like a lot of the pants actually fit RIGHT at the ankle - so pro-tip you guys, the pants are great buys for the price ($65-88). Aside from the jeans - if you're even remotely curvy those jeans are not going to do you favors (cry). I'm not so sold on the shirts and other apparel, they're really expensive even for their "ethical and transparent" pricing, but I love that you can get so many basics in different colors here, just be careful what you choose and make sure the stitches and fabric are worth the price to you. Shoes are insanely narrow, I went up a full size in the loafers - sigh. Overall, not a bad experience, I was a little disappointed that not everything I saw online was in store - in fact there was a pretty limited selection - which I guess matches the ~aesthetic~ of the place, where it's minimal and clean, but when you're going in store to try something on to decide whether it'll fit or be worth the buy, it kind of helps for it to be... in the store. On the upside, they deliver to your house if you order in store - and I guess having the physical location makes returning a lot easier! Would probably come back but not often, it's really just basic pieces that you're likely to find elsewhere at lower price points, but I still love their pants! read more

Nice and attentive service which is hard to find considering there is a retail/service labor shortage in the bay cause of high cost of living. They were eager to help me with what I needed and I walked away buying two pairs of shoes. The brand is a healthy concept with sustainability, even though it has been tied to a pretentious tech culture that grew in SF, I think it's trying to move in a more approachable vs. exclusive direction and I can see it in the hired staff. I have consistently had a terrible experience with one woman at the Valencia store whose name is Nikki I believe that is her name as she has red hair and glasses. She has been consistently passive aggressive and rude making me feel unwelcome and flat out shamed. I can't believe this behavior is tolerated. read more

I love the brand, but the store; made me wait in line to get in, had no sizes in stock, and made me wait for a dressing room. The one upside was that they have buzzers for the dressing rooms which I wished I knew about before I started shopping. It was a bummer they didn't have many sizes of things because the only reason I came here was to check my size in everything before buying online. read more
