Had a really good experience here. Matthew helped us with 2 paddle boards and was extremely patient with helping us load them up on the Prius. The customer service we received here was 100%!! Even after he helped load the boards and I decided I wanted it loaded a different way, he continued with a smile and helped load it a different way so I would feel more comfortable. A coworker had passed by and told him his lunch arrived but Matthew didn't rush us or leave us to load the boards up on our own even though he could have. Great prices in my opinion also. Easy and fun experience with OEX Sunset Beach. Parking was easy along the street, and they have a small lot right in front of the store. They set us up with our gear and showed us a little map of where to go. There are so many ways to explore, we just went the main way they recommended, and finished a little early so we had time to splash around for a bit. Thanks to them for taking photos and holding onto our stuff for us (they have little cubbies) So much fun looking through at all the houses! Had a really fun time, and one hour is definitely enough to get your fill. The only thing is I wish they did reservations (what if we put a credit card down?) I used to go to the spot down the street because they are smaller and a little more quaint of a shop. But, OEX has a lot more equipment and they have a early bird rate of 2 hours for $15 if you paddle out before a certain time (not sure what the cutoff is). The customer service is good. I've never had a bad experience here. They staff is always so nice and patient and are willing to answer any questions. They allow reservations for groups of 10 or more and even offer a discount. For my birthday, we reserved 10 boards and instead of $15 for 2 hours, it's only $10! Definitely a great deal! read more

I've been here before but it's been a couple of years. It use to be slightly cheaper but you know, now with covid and less suppliers, prices are up a tad but by far the cheaper then other places. They were very friendly. I got 1 double kayak for 2hrs for $30. My nephew wanted to go kayaking so here we are. They grabbed a kids size life vest for him so I felt comfortable that he was secure. Matt I believe was the guy who helped us and was great w/my nephew as well. You could tell, he did enjoy his job. He pushed us off and off we went. My nephew loved it. Recently purchased a new Malibu Stealth 14' Kayak from a private dealer (I SHOULD HAVE CAME TO OEX FOR THE KAYAK AS WELL), but if you know kayaks, you know they come bare, needing all of the accessories which of course range from modest, to extravagant and OEX supplies all of those amenities, along with SO MANY awesome Kayaks, all for your drooling pleasure if your into that kind of thing haha ;) In many Kayaking Communities, Andy is highly regarded, and many of the best Kayak Anglers out there, only buy their stuff, and get their mods from the Iceman.. Something to be said for sure as to why I drove from Riverside, a couple hours down the jam packed 91 to Sunset Beach with a 14 Foot Kayak on top of my 2014 Honda Civic Coupe, hah, but that's another mission to speak of another day ;) Any Items purchased from OEX, they will install on your kayak/SUP or whatever free of cost, not to already say their prices are at the low end compared to other Distributors/Dealers/Rental locations... I did not go for a Paddle Board or Kayak Rentals but they where way cheap, like 15 Dollars an Hour.. and people where coming in and out the door on a Thursday in Huntington Harbor to get their Harbor Paddle on ;) Arrived with a Bare Malibu Stealth 14', and left with a Lowrance 5 HDI Fish Finder with Tranducer attached to Lowrance-ready scupper mount, Anchor/Chute Trolley Kit, Hand/Manual Bilge Pump, and "Livewell Stealth-Kit" installed (Some Malibu Kayaks like my Stealth 14' come with a center hatch right in front of the seat, it is about 5 gallons of water around and is made to be plumbed for a livewell for bait, which OEX so graciously did) Super happy customer here, and even more happy Angler who can now attack the bite from another Angle ;) Thanks again, and do not hesitate to contact them with any questions as everyone working here is awesome, and def. a beach soul!! When my friend Natalie & I arrived at 9:00am, the employee who helped us said it would only cost $10 because we arrived before 10am. Score! ***Update: I forgot to mention it's a 2-hour rental, what a great deal! We each got our own kayak. My friend said that it's way easier than going in the double ones. I was a tad bit nervous in the beginning because I've seen videos of people flipping over, but I got the hang of it in no time. After we paid, we were directed to go outside where the kayaks & paddle were. The guys who gave us the paddles were super friendly. I told one of them that it was my first time. He was friendly & gave me some pointers. We took off our shoes and left them by the steps where the employees were standing at because you have to step in the water to get into the kayak. You can leave your shoes on but who wants wet shoes? Haha It was a really fun day. I see myself kayaking again and I'll definitely go back to this spot. Best location in OC to go paddle boarding or kayaking in my opinion. Never too crowded and good pricing. They offer military discount and the canal/harbor that you dock in and out of is very clean, not too many boats passing through and lots to look at. It's right down the street from my house, ample parking (most of the time), and the guys helping are pretty cool. I've gone here a couple of times with people who didn't know how to paddle board and they were very patient in helping people get on and helping them with a technique to paddle or stand up. Inside they have waterproof cases, cameras, goggles, kayaks and lots of other stuff for purchase and they even have a water area that you can shower off if you fall in the water or just clean the sand off your feet after having some fun. It's 12 dollars an hour and cheaper for the next hour but usually two hours is plenty of time out on the water. Goodluck all! read more

Helpful and friendly guys that run this place. Very reasonable prices, even better with the Groupon. I hear they have a morning special on Saturdays and Sundays (call to confirm). They have small sandwich bags for your phone if you want to bring it with you. I only recommend this if you're in a kayak or if you know you're not going to fall off the paddle board. We had a group of 5 and had a mix of kayaks and paddle boards. It's a nice workout and it's always nice to dream about one day owning the houses and yachts in the harbor. I HAPPEN TO LIKE THIS PLACE! I've been Kayaking in the Huntington Harbour for some time now and don't see what all the negativity is all about. I mean, just under 20 bucks gets you 2 hours of great upper body exercise, a beautiful view of million-dollar homes & their boats, good times with or without company...sure the water is murky.. who told you to get out of the kayak in the first place? Jump in at your own risk! The HB wetlands and the actual beach not too far away. This is the only place I go to rent kayaks. The reason why is because the one across the way always has a line & is a tad more pricey for the exact same KAYAKING experience. They also have a rent-to-own option you can discuss with the person you pay. All-in-all, I don't mind coming here because I technically never had a bad experience with the staff or the actual kayaks. Highlights & Low-lights: *Parking sucks- so get there early to nab one of the few out front *$15 singles, $25 doubles, $35 triples for 2 hours (they did raise prices recently) *Stand up paddle board available *Rent to own option *New models on display if you plan to purchase *Sometimes gets a little backed up if there are a lot of people *Usually 1-2 people on staff 4 stars from me! read more

My sister, cousin, her friend, and I came here for some kayaking. The weather was beautiful: it was sunny and cool, and mildly windy. Only street parking was available, but we came at a non-peak time so it wasn't difficult to locate a spot. Huntington/Sunset Beach can get a bit crazy at rush hour, especially weekends, so I'd highly recommend coming here at an off day or time. Avoiding large OC crowds is a recipe for having fun, utmost when you're in the water. Less people = more space. I was bummed out that we arrived at 4 and had to return our kayaks in an hour and a half. It's one of those few times where I've kayaked and don't want to rush myself. We rented out two kayaks, and each were $25. I had a lot of fun just enjoying the weather and the gorgeous views of the houses. The water was very calm. This is what life is about :) read more

Gotta love the heat wave! Paddleboarding is my summer go to activity now and I'm glad I found OEX. Warning: parking is difficult so be prepared to circle. I came in without a reservation and they still had plenty of boards to go around. This place has one of the best deals around: $15 for the first hour and $5 an hour after that! After we paid and signed our liability, we went around the corner and down the stairs where our point persona and boards were waiting for us on the "beach". The guy gave us some quick pointers and off we went! The lagoon we paddle in does get pretty congested with paddleboards and kayaks. If you go out further, there are a lot of yachts and boats that you will have to avoid as well. That's the only thing I don't like about paddleboarding in the lagoon. However, it's still really relaxing and fun to look at the rich, expensive homes as you paddle your way through. P.S. You can bring your dog on your board! read more

Another place turned us away because they said he's too small, but not here. They gave me a paper map, gave my boy a life vest and his own paddle. He had a blast and for the both of us for up to 2 hours it was $25. Perfect pricing if you ask me. I hear weekends are really busy but during the week, like today it was perfect! This is a great place to rent a kayak or SUP, or even buy something. I didn't feel like purchasing a rack to haul my Hobie to Huntington Beach, and OEX came through with a similar pedal kayak. The crew was very helpful and later I looked at their selection of kayak trailers. Inside, they have an excellent selection of fully rigged fishing kayaks. There's a large restroom for changing as you can plan on taking on some salt water. Great trip and good fishing advice from the crew. read more

This place is next to another rental place I normally go to for kayaks and Paddle boards and I came to these guys because all the kayaks were rented out next door by the time on got there. This place is pretty friendly and gave us a group rate which was superb since our party wasn't over 10. Also they didn't take our licenses as collateral and just sent us on our merry way after paying before we shipped out. They gave us some basic how to info for the ones doing standup paddle boarding and those that were new to kayaking otherwise it was a standard affair. The male who helped us redeem our ticket was such a cool guy, he could tell we were super excited. Then once we went out to actually go paddle boarding, the male teaching us was really funny! My sister and I came here on a Saturday around 2PM. We were able to get our paddle boards right away after signing our waivers. When we left, there seemed to be a few people waiting for kayaks to be emptied out. My sister and I did the paddle boarding. Renting a paddle board for an hour is $15. There are Groupon deals online, but those can only be used on the weekdays. It was fairly easy to learn how to use them. We didn't fall in the water at all. It was both of our first times, and we had a blast! Most people on paddle boards were wearing their bathing suits, but I saw many people in kayaks wearing normal clothes. Some people even brought their dogs and paddle boarded with them. That was absolutely adorable! The only bad thing about OEX Sunset Beach was parking. There are only street parkings available, so if you go on a peak time, it may take you a long time to find parking. read more

OEX is my favorite place to rent kayaks and the only place I know that rents the Hobie pedal kayaks. My husband and I are in LOVE with the pedal kayaks and will probably be buying a set from them soon. The guys are always helpful, the location is great. I love Huntington harbor. There are great beach areas to stop and hang out at, lots of bridges to linger under on hot days and the street parking is free! I highly recommend you go try OEX. My friend and I bought a Groupon for this place and we didn't have any issues redeeming it. The guy just checked to make sure they had the kayak we needed in stock, and when they did, we went out and kayaked. The place is located near a few other kayaking rental places, so after spotting one of them, we only had to look a little bit more carefully to find this one. There was parking along the streets but it was pretty packed. The area we kayaked in was pretty nice, there was a great number of homes all around the area, and the kayaking was mostly through the water in between them. There were quite a few fancy looking homes to see too. The area also has a lot of people paddleboarding and some people were on boats. Overall it was a very fun experience and we enjoyed it a lot. read more

This is my go to place for kayaking - calm water at sunset beach, great deal, and friendly staff. There's early bird special (weekends before 10:30am) for $10 per person for 2 hours of kayak (single or double) or SUP. If you have a group of 10 or more, call in to make reservation to get the group rate of 2 hours for $10 kayak and $15 SUP if you can't make the early bird time. There are groupon and online deals such as $15 for 3-4 hours, but I like to go directly to the shop without using the groupons for a few reasons. 1. Typical workout for us is about 2 hours since the area is small, so 4 hours is WAY too long. 2. Groupon and other sites take 50% of the listing price, so the shop makes very little off of the deal; I rather support the local business so they continue to stay around for more fun in the long run. 3. $10 is cheaper than $15... ^_^ As other yelpers reviewed, the staff is very friendly, and they do check availability before just randomly take your business. Parking always takes a while, so please allow yourself some extra time to park along PCH. They also provide ziplock bags, maps, and life vests. When going in a group, I recommend getting a mix of kayak and SUP so you can do both by switching off with your pals. There are two parks that you can dock to rest before heading back to the shop, and I like to bring light refreshment in a small cooler to energize in between. Overall this is a great place for a cost effective and fun kayak or SUP excursion for all ages. read more

Myself and 3 friends went paddle boarding yesterday. It was the first time for all of us. And what a positive experience OEX was. I had read online their early bird discount. So we all agreed to meet there at 10:00. we were able to book 3 hours for $20 bucks. What an awesome deal. I'm really glad we went to HB Harbor for our first experience. I think NP would have been too busy and hectic for a learning experience. Our instructor,Chris, was friendly and helpful. I was a little concerned about falling in. I don't have the best balance. My confidence was boosted when he stated there were only 3 reasons you would fall in.( Already forgot what they were, but I didn't fall in). If I have a complaint it would be parking. We got there early enough that street parking was not a problem. But I wish they had more parking spaces to offer. read more

Visited yesterday in order to try some SUP. Really chill place and staff. So easy to rent and return. Had a great 2 hours SUPing (is that the correct term to use?) in the waterways lined with crazy rich houses. Will definitely come back. Agree with another Yelper...wish they took reservations. Also wish they rented dry boxes/bags for your stuff (although they will sell you one). Fortunately I brought a drawstring bag and a Ziploc to keep my phone and car remote dry. read more

Paddle boarding or kayaking is relaxing and fun, and I recommend going late, and enjoying the sunset. Simple instructions will get you going in no time. I did see a teenager fall off and lose his glasses, so be sure to plan ahead if you need eyewear. Kayaking is also a relaxing way to exercise, if that makes sense. The sunset beach canals are smooth and easy to explore, and once you get that down, you can head into the Huntington Harbor and master wakes and currents. Friendly staff and reasonable prices make this a fun family activity. Also, a great date. I enjoy taking my kayak and launching right here for some nice quiet time, as well. My dog loves joining me. Been going here on and off and love this place. The guys that help out are kind and super helpful. I'm a big girl and they make sure I get in out comfortably. But this trip I was waiting on friends and saw a younger gentleman fall in the water of his paddleboard. He yelled that he lost his phone. Not only did one of the guys grab goggles for the customer to dive for it, he got in himself and helped out (the helper in the make fishing great again hat-haha). The fam bam and I came here a couple weeks ago and had an awesome time. Staff was incredibly helpful and the prices are super reasonable. The marina is an awesome spot to paddle around and theres so much to see, so many beautiful homes and boats and yachts staged everywhere its a great time for all ages. My little 6 year old niece did a great job with me on the double kayak and it definitely tired her out for the day haha! Hats off to the staff here, they were incredibly accommodating and were able to stow one of our bags behind their counter before hopping on the kayaks and paddle boards. Only thing that is tough is parking so you just have to get here early enough or risk searching around for a while and walking a good long way. read more

I bought a Living Social "paddle into fitness" deal for 2 here. My bf and I woke up early on a Sunday, rode our bikes down and were excited to try paddle boarding. I don't think I was prepared for the experience, though. We were given paddles and boards and told to meet Lauren at the 2nd turn in the harbor. Here, she informed us her class was a bootcamp on paddle boards. Erg, whaaat? A creative idea, I'll give them that, but I honestly just wanted to paddle lazily around the harbor and take in the sights. Occasionally, Lauren, a leathery skinny blonde woman, would bark out orders like ok, now do some squats on your board. Or she'd say let's do some abs. To be honest, I was vertical and pretty excited not to be falling everywhere since they gave us the boards without those nice little rubber spots the other people in our class had that helped them balance. I was hesitant to do these things since I was still busy trying to catch up to the rest of the class anyways. I'm slow. But it was roughly an hour and a half of paddle boarding with a stop at a park, where we literally jogged a lap through the park (in my bikini no less,) did squats, lunges, and pushups, all before returning to our boards. I honestly was more taken with trying to paddle and get myself going fast in the wind and the wake of the boats than I was with the exercises. The exercises weren't enough sets or reps that I'd exactly call it a workout anyways. (I do 3 times the amount of reps and sets on my own at the gym so it didn't really seem like it'd be a worthwhile workout anyways.) So I largely ignored her as she bellowed down wind for me to try and speed up to do mountain climbers or whatever. I could choose to stop and do that or run into a boat. I chose being vertical. Overall, I had fun just doing the actual paddle boarding. The fitness idea is creative, but it wasn't really my style. In the future, I think I'd return just to rent the boards from this shop bc they're in a really good location. Paddle boarding was just super super easy for me, even as a beginner, and it's something I'm looking forward to doing again... even if I'm perpetually slow. ;) read more
