Its been 15 years since I went to Sunset to rent a kayak next door to OEX. It was high tide on this particular morning and the street was actually flooded! I got lucky and parked across the street by the 7-11. Went to OEX due to proximity and because it was just easier to hop over a few puddles and reach it rather than wade over to Sunset. Great value and reasonable pricing. 2 hours for under 20 and that was just enough activity on a sunny day. We were able to paddle through a lot of areas in that time frame. I didn't want to tandem, so I requested a single kayak for each of us. I really didn't want to take any chances and reduce the risk of tipping over as this was a first time for my companion. Lucky for us, the timing worked out and there were enough single kayaks. The staff is super friendly and chill. Not much direction on how to wait for the kayaks. Just follow the crowd and wait by the water. I appreciate the young men who work there dragging in these kayaks and paddleboards back to shore and launching people out to the harbor as well. I recommend to anyone trying this out to check out this place. We didn't have waterproof bags with us and they had offered to hold our belongings for us at the front desk. There are a lot of places nearby to dine at as well. Will be back! read more

I love this place!! I always bring my friends here when we're looking to kayak or paddle board. I came last week during covid to celebrate my moms birthday. In the store, they require masks on. Once we got to the area to pick up our boards, no one was wearing face masks. This is understandable because we're by the water, but at least don't clump in groups. Head into their shop to pay and sign waiver, then they meet you out to go over the equipment. Love Cali because you can go to the beach pretty much any day you want!! Came here last Saturday, and the weather was amazingly beautiful!! Nice, sunny, and 80 degrees! My boyfriend and I wanted to go paddle boarding so this seemed like a great day to go! I bought a Groupon deal ($15 for 4 hours of paddle boarding). 4 hours seems a lot, I know! But I would rather have a lot of time than rushing to get back! If you don't have a Groupon, their rates are not that bad. From what I remember, 1 hour is $15 and additional hour is $5 each. The process was simple. Signed a release form, gave our car keys to the guy and he put it in a box. Went down to get our boards and Tony gave us a little demo of how to use the boards. Pretty simple. After about 5 minutes, we were on the board paddling away! It is pretty simple to go on and it is kind of hard to fall off, unless you really try ;) There are lots of boats parked on the docks. Love paddling along wishing I could live in one of these houses. There are areas where you cannot trespass because those are private properties. Be careful because there are some boats out on the water and they can cause little ripples of waves so hang on and KEEP YOUR CORE TIGHT so you don't fall off your board! We spent about 1.5 hours on the water and that was good enough for us. Next time, we are going to pack a lunch so that way, we can paddle, eat, and the paddle again! Great place to relax, take in the view, and get a workout!! I can't remember the last time I went Kayaking, so this was essentially my first time and I loved it! We arrived around 3pm and started our kayaking journey along the marina. We had 5 of us in single kayaks and we all had a great time! You basically sit in a kayak and they will push you off and you start paddling your way through the marina. *Be careful of the boats/yachts and other kayaks and also the paddle boarders around, but overall we didn't have any run-ins with anyone. As the larger boats pass by, be careful with the waves as I was told that your kayak may tip over because of them, but if you're careful and keep still you'll be fine. The kayaks are very stable and wider in width than the professional kayaks.You just paddle in each and any way/direction you choose and be back within 1 to 2 hours. The view is amazing with all of the enormously beautiful houses and yachts. Great workout for your arms, core, and legs as I was definitely sore afterwards! You have the option to wear a life jacket/vest or not, we all opted not to, but there is jacket/vest at the back of every kayak in case you change your mind. Mind you I am not a confident swimmer, but I was okay with out the left vest. Clothes: Shorts, pants, tank top or shirt - sunglasses is a must and a hat if you want. Bring a change of clothes just in case because of your paddling you do get several drops of water on your head/legs/arms, and will definitely need to rinse off from all the salt that get's left behind. This is a great place to rent a kayak or SUP, or even buy something. I didn't feel like purchasing a rack to haul my Hobie to Huntington Beach, and OEX came through with a similar pedal kayak. The crew was very helpful and later I looked at their selection of kayak trailers. Inside, they have an excellent selection of fully rigged fishing kayaks. Came here for the first time today for a friend's birthday. The place is super easily located right in between the beach and the canals, with their own launching beach area, so no carrying your own boards. There is ample free street parking (didn't know that still existed at SoCal beaches). There are also plenty of bars and restaurant options around to chill out at afterwards. We were a group of 8, so it took us a while to all get together, checked in and paid up but all the staff members were very friendly and patient with us. Some of the group were new to paddle boarding, so they got a quick rundown of the dos and don'ts before we set off. They have a map of the canals available so you don't get lost. We only left the beach at 3pm and the wind had already picked up a bit by then, so we hardly had to do any paddling to be on our way. The views of all the different styles of homes and fancy boats are gorgeous. We also stopped at one of the empty docks to have a little break. We ended up paddling to the back of the main canal, which turned out to be a bad idea because we had full frontal wind on the way back and it took us an hour plus a ton of effort to get back in time. Lesson learnt for next time lol.. We did have a great time, no complaints about the gear and for $20 for two hours it's definitely worth it! read more

Love this spot! Staff is friendly, the equipment is clean, and the ambiance is beautiful. I always come here to rent the hobie kayaks, but this last time I came with my son the kayak was broken and kept spinning in circles. We did not get to enjoy the full time on the water and when we informed the guy nothing was done. For 55 dollars for 2 hours I feel like I should have been offered another kayak or a compensation. We were only out on the water 45 minutes and that was because he was stuck and I had to pull him along the way. However, I will come back because usually I have great experiences here, I just think that day it was too crowded and I didn't want to make a big deal about it. I got yelled at for no reason! I was teaching my dog how to swim and kindly asked a family if I can borrow their paddle board so my dog could be use to it. They said yes. Got my dog to get on, until one of the employees started yelling at me. Yelling I needed to get my dog off of it and that it wasn't mine. And asked 5 times if I rented it. They set us up with our gear and showed us a little map of where to go. But, OEX has a lot more equipment and they have a early bird rate of 2 hours for $15 if you paddle out before a certain time (not sure what the cutoff is). The customer service is good. I've never had a bad experience here. They staff is always so nice and patient and are willing to answer any questions. They allow reservations for groups of 10 or more and even offer a discount. I've been here before but it's been a couple of years. It use to be slightly cheaper but you know, now with covid and less suppliers, prices are up a tad but by far the cheaper then other places. They were very friendly. I got 1 double kayak for 2hrs for $30. My nephew wanted to go kayaking so here we are. They grabbed a kids size life vest for him so I felt comfortable that he was secure. Matt I believe was the guy who helped us and was great w/my nephew as well. You could tell, he did enjoy his job. He pushed us off and off we went. My nephew loved it. Something to be said for sure as to why I drove from Riverside, a couple hours down the jam packed 91 to Sunset Beach with a 14 Foot Kayak on top of my 2014 Honda Civic Coupe, hah, but that's another mission to speak of another day ;) Any Items purchased from OEX, they will install on your kayak/SUP or whatever free of cost, not to already say their prices are at the low end compared to other Distributors/Dealers/Rental locations... I did not go for a Paddle Board or Kayak Rentals but they where way cheap, like 15 Dollars an Hour.. and people where coming in and out the door on a Thursday in Huntington Harbor to get their Harbor Paddle on ;) Arrived with a Bare Malibu Stealth 14', and left with a Lowrance 5 HDI Fish Finder with Tranducer attached to Lowrance-ready scupper mount, Anchor/Chute Trolley Kit, Hand/Manual Bilge Pump, and "Livewell Stealth-Kit" installed (Some Malibu Kayaks like my Stealth 14' come with a center hatch right in front of the seat, it is about 5 gallons of water around and is made to be plumbed for a livewell for bait, which OEX so graciously did) Super happy customer here, and even more happy Angler who can now attack the bite from another Angle ;) Thanks again, and do not hesitate to contact them with any questions as everyone working here is awesome, and def. a beach soul!! I went kayaking for the first time today! It was so much fun!!! Really relaxing too. When my friend Natalie & I arrived at 9:00am, the employee who helped us said it would only cost $10 because we arrived before 10am. Score! ***Update: I forgot to mention it's a 2-hour rental, what a great deal! We each got our own kayak. My friend said that it's way easier than going in the double ones. I was a tad bit nervous in the beginning because I've seen videos of people flipping over, but I got the hang of it in no time. After we paid, we were directed to go outside where the kayaks & paddle were. The guys who gave us the paddles were super friendly. I told one of them that it was my first time. He was friendly & gave me some pointers. We took off our shoes and left them by the steps where the employees were standing at because you have to step in the water to get into the kayak. They offer military discount and the canal/harbor that you dock in and out of is very clean, not too many boats passing through and lots to look at. It's right down the street from my house, ample parking (most of the time), and the guys helping are pretty cool. I've gone here a couple of times with people who didn't know how to paddle board and they were very patient in helping people get on and helping them with a technique to paddle or stand up. Inside they have waterproof cases, cameras, goggles, kayaks and lots of other stuff for purchase and they even have a water area that you can shower off if you fall in the water or just clean the sand off your feet after having some fun. It's 12 dollars an hour and cheaper for the next hour but usually two hours is plenty of time out on the water. Goodluck all! read more

I mean, just under 20 bucks gets you 2 hours of great upper body exercise, a beautiful view of million-dollar homes & their boats, good times with or without company...sure the water is murky.. who told you to get out of the kayak in the first place? Jump in at your own risk! The HB wetlands and the actual beach not too far away. This is the only place I go to rent kayaks. The reason why is because the one across the way always has a line & is a tad more pricey for the exact same KAYAKING experience. They also have a rent-to-own option you can discuss with the person you pay. All-in-all, I don't mind coming here because I technically never had a bad experience with the staff or the actual kayaks.
