I am beyond grateful for the entire Excel Chimney crew. When I bought my home in 2017 I was unaware that the chimney chase was an old, galvanized metal, and what was worse- that if flexed and bowed heavily during storms where winds got to 15mph and above, resulting in a very loud, booming and thumping sound in the master bedroom (which is closest to the chase cover) I had a chimney sweep inspection done early on and he tried to brace it by securing it more, but that did nothing to improve things. Many, many restless nights thinking I was doomed with a house that had this big a flaw with no solution in sight. I foolishly had a general contractor look at it, and they charged $600 to drop a camera down the flu (I was desperate for answers). Then they told me it would cost $8K (!!) to secure the pipes inside the flu. They wanted to open up walls, etc. (!!) I shed a lot of tears knowing I couldn't afford that kind of repair. Frustrated, exhausted and feeling like I would never have peaceful sleeps during the winters was very depressing & daunting to think about. Then I met Richard (Dick) and he said he would take a look. His foreman put up scaffolding and took a look to verify that the original chase was indeed flimsy, and that I would likely benefit from a heavier gauge stainless steel version. That recommendation made sense to me, and I agreed to try it. They put it on and the next windy storm revealed it unfortunately didn't do the trick. I wanted to cry but knew they were careful to not promise it would solve things. To my amazement, they agreed to come back out and try bracing the chase a different way, and re-securing it. Scaffolding went back up, and they spent quite a while up there working hard to get a permanent fix in place. That evening, winds were at 14mph and for the 1st time in 2.5 years, there was no annoyingly loud rattle or booming sounds. I have never been SO RELIEVED and GRATEFUL! So far, things are still quiet during windy storms. The customer service shown by Excel was exceptional. I salute Richard and his team of technicians for upholding such tremendous devotion to their customers and doing all they can to make it right. DeShaun, Tom and Jeremy all did their part to solve my issue and they did it with professionalism through and through. To boot, I also had them re-do the cracked panels in my firebox which were in terrible shape, making the old fireplace unsafe for a fire. DeShaun made the fireplace look brand new and made sure it was safely drawing air upward, etc. I safely lit my first fire last week and am over the moon happy! The ambiance of a nice fire and fireplace has changed the vibe of the room (and house) in such a pleasant way, especially during these stressful times. Excel was introduced to us through Homeowners Club. Dick, the owner, came out to survey the state of our chimney and provide an estimate. Members of the Excel team visited on three separate occasions to complete the three tasks: - replace the B-vent; - re-mortar the top portion of our chimney, and spot-mortar the rest of the chimney; - apply waterproofing to the chimney surface. All members of the crew had a professional and considerate attitude. The B-vent was unusually difficult to replace, but the Excel team climbed into the attic and did the extra work necessary to remove the hold unit. We had our chimney work done 3 years ago, and one of the things they were supposed to do was add flashing around the chimney. Now that we're replacing the roof, one of the roofing contractors took a picture of the back side of the chimney that you can't see from the street, and guess what? The flashing is installed half-way around the chimney, only where you can tell. It's disappointing that you can't trust that people will do the job right without inspecting it closely. read more

I've had the pleasure of working with Dick Murray and Excel Chimney & Fireplace Service on four separate occasions over the last 20 years in this house in North Capitol Hill: - In 1999, Excel rebuilt the brick columns and masonry porch structure in the front of our house - In 2006, they tuckpointed the house, which has bricks on all four sides - In 2010, they built two brick side walls for a new set of front steps leading from the sidewalk, and knitted those side walls into an existing brick wall running along the sidewalk - In 2019, they did all the masonry and venting for a gas fireplace insert we bought from Sutter Home and Hearth for our downstairs fireplace. At the same time, they installed a top-sealing damper for our upstairs fireplace. During the course of that work, they discovered that the 100-year-old interior brick wall separating the two flues was defective, so they rebuilt the top few feet, working through a hole they ingeniously cut through the outside of the chimney and repaired later. Between those four jobs, Excel has touched every one of this house's thousands of bricks and done pretty much every kind of masonry imaginable. I don't remember all the crew members' names, but Tom and Jim and Dick himself did some of the earlier work, and the most recent work was done by Jeremy and William. Through the years, every single person I've worked with from Excel has been hardworking, meticulous, and highly skilled at the craft of masonry. They enjoy their work, and they take pride in doing a beautiful job. I have dealt with many contractors over these 20 years, and honestly Dick is my favorite. I called several places for estimates for a leaking chimney. One place couldn't get out to provide the estimate for a month and another charged for the estimate. Another place came out to provide a free estimate in a few days, but the estimator was very fast and not very thorough when looking at the chimney and suggested a quick fix that would not have lasted long. It took a week for Excel Chimney to come out and provide an estimate, but they did it for free and were very thorough and checked all aspects of the chimney. Jim, the estimator, recommended rebuilding the chimney from the roof up for a longer fix and guaranteed the rebuild for 8 years. I trusted that he was suggesting the best option for repairing the chimney. Excel was booked out a month, but I scheduled the rebuild with them. I also needed the roof replaced and asked Jim if he had any recommendations. He gave me some recommendations and Dick, the owner, even followed up by email with some more. I wound up using one of Excel's recommendations for replacing the roof and the company was also excellent. We had to coordinate the roof replacement with the chimney rebuild, due to the roofing company's schedule, and Excel was very accommodating and worked with the roofers to get both items complete. I had a great experience working with Dick and his crew. I reached out to a few companies for quotes and ultimately chose Excel Chimney to work with. I appreciated that Dick came over to our house and gave us an estimate on the work - one of the other companies I contacted was going to charge a $95 fee just to come over to the house for an initial review, which I thought was crazy. Besides a standard chimney sweep and cleanout, I also needed to get part of the interior of our fireplace repaired. When the cement dried, it left quite a bit of cracking - I later learned this is normal especially for this repair in particular. So, while it was slightly annoying to keep scheduling followup appointments to finish the work, Dick's crew came over two additional times until the fireplace was fully repaired and for no additional cost. I had Excel rebuild and line a chimney with stainless as well as parge the smoke chamber and add a custom stainless chimney cap. It wasn't an easy job, as they had to do some of the lower work from the roof to avoid breaking into the chimney inside the home and damaging the decorative tile on the chimney. (Midcentury modern house with freestanding chimney and double sided fireplace). Other contractors had told me that they would have to demo the entire inside portion of the chimney, put in gas inserts, etc and at a much higher cost. Turns out they just didn't have the skilled mason's that Excel has. They kept everything as clean as possible, protected my membrane roof and picked up after each day's work. I needed to have my chimney partially rebuilt, relined, etc a couple years ago... Excel's estimate came in about 25% under the other estimate I got. The other company I was talking to wanted to bring the chimney down even further, so part of the difference probably just had to do with the amount of work being completed. I appreciated Excel's willingness to slightly rein in the price and extent of the project. The foreman was very helpful and professional. The scaffolding was well done, the re pointing was well done, with good dust control. The final job looked great. They cut in the flashing at the roof rather than using step flashing let in to mortar joints. Now that I know more about it I wished they had asked me, I think I would have gone with lead step flashing (looks classier), but I'm sure they figured since I was on a bit of a budget the cut-in flashing was the way to go. Regardless, they did a good job of it. They put a nice stainless cap on top, earthquake strapping to the roof framing, and new terra cotta flue linings. It's a couple years later and everything is still looking great. I have to say, I think the pricing was pretty fair. It might have been around $5-6k for a half rebuild of a chimney. It's hard to compare apples to apples on different projects, but given the amount of labor required and the quality of the work, it seemed totally reasonable to me. read more

Excel chimney rebuilt two 100+ year-old chimneys on our home. I called in November, and had to schedule for March, but that was OK with my timeline. They came out exactly as scheduled and got to work - the new chimneys look nice, with a few artistic touches added in. The included chimney caps are nice-looking. The workers were friendly and competent and kept everything clean. Overall, I would be glad to work with them again, although I don't expect the new chimneys to fail any time soon. read more
