This review is long overdue! I had to make sure that I captured how much I appreciated MK & Sons. After suffering a leak through my chimney that ended up impacting the interior of my home, I reached out to several masons in the area to look into repairing the structure. Mitch was far and away the most approachable, and made sure I understood exactly what had happened to cause the issue. He explained that in order to fix the job well, he'd have to rebuild some of the chimney and re-tuckpoint most of the structure. He knew this wasn't the most cost-effective option, but explained that it was the right thing to do to avoid any issues in the future. It wasn't an upsell; I could tell that Mitch was speaking from experience. His honesty and integrity were evident. Not only did he educate me on the project, but he and his crew did really well to explain why they made certain decisions. Mitch and his team are amazing! They fixed the most atrocious flashing job on a chimney I've ever seen. Unfortunately the flashing was on my house. I had a roofing company install the flashing due to a leak that was happening and what they did was just place another piece of flashing on top of the old flashing. My house is a nice mid century modern home with the chimney as the main point of view when you're facing the house - so basically it's the first thing you see. Mitch saw this and came to the rescue. He worked with me to ensure it's exactly what we both envisioned it should look like. He took something as simple as flashing and made it look beautiful. I don't know if I've ever wanted to give a 5 star review more than for MK and Sons Masonry. They just completed a chimney rebuild for us on our 1952 home that had fallen into disrepair from moisture damage. Their price was lower than the other quote I got from a larger national company, and I feel confident their work is much, much better than what I would have gotten with the national company. Mitch clearly knows his stuff, and was super friendly discussing options and walking me through the work he was completing. Their team was on time, communicative, and professional; and they were really good about mask wearing when I was around (which is appreciated in these COVID times). I was extremely pleased with the work that MK & Sons did for me. The chimney is transformed. Cleaner, brighter, sturdier and wearing its new cap. The guys who did the work -grinding out & replacing otter, replacing the crown, installing a glue tile & chimney cap- were a pleasure to have around. They were friendly and answered my questions happily & knowledgeably. They also worked their buns off. I was impressed. Setting up and taking down scaffolding, grinding, piping in the new mortar (it looks like a giant cake decorating tube), cutting the new flue tile - they stayed on task! They were respectful of my house & yard and left the worksite clean and tidy. They observed all safety protocols with face shields. Respirators and other PPE, incl. COVID masks upon arrival. MK & Sons price was very competitive. Communication on the project was clear and timely. Yes, there was a wait before you could do the work but, as I learned from you & the guys, this kind of work is weather dependent and spring temperatures some when they will. Mitch and sons/apprentices (Josh and Jordan) and Luke (third apprentice/helper), plus Dana (who manages the business side, such as appointment scheduling) are just awesome! I met with several masons for estimates and Mitch was the most skilled, experienced and knowledgable. He was not afraid to tackle the job - which was not easy. He had no fear because of the years and years of experience he has as a skilled mason. And he is not just an mason - he is an artisan, which is a rare find. I always seek out these experts, who run family-owned small companies - with many years of experience that can "walk the talk" and also take personal pride in their work (it's not just a paycheck to them). Josh, Jordan and Luke are polite, skilled, and hard-working young men and it's great to see how they are learning the masonry from their dad/mentor. We have a 1956 house with a brick type that was only made for a few years in the 1950s (you cannot get it anywhere - I did try to find it), but Mitch was able to reclaim some brick from an outdoor brick potter that was decimated by a blue spruce's roots planted there in the 1950s (if you have trees growing in exterior brick potters you should dig them out before their roots ruin the brick!) This was not an easy thing to do since the brick is pretty thin and it's easy to shatter it as you try to reclaim it. Also, he was able to use some spare bricks I found in the garage. He was able to replace the door and window lintels on the south side of our house that had rusted out and had expanded so they pushed all the above bricks upwards, so the brick was not in a straight, horizontal line. He got the bricks leveled out. He also repaired many spots in the exterior that were severely cracked, including replacing bricks using the few replacements available, as well as disguised the repair as needed, on multiple sides of the house, sometimes feathering with color to make it all blend in. He also came to seal our brick a month later to preserve it. Mitch has a great personality (mellow and easy-going), was always on time, called me when he, and the rest of the crew, were on the way to my house, and outlined, ahead of time, exactly what would be done and what it would cost. It did have to wait about 3 months (which was made clear to me upfront) for Mitch's services, because so many people want his expertise to fix their masonry. Repairing the brick was not easy, but he (and his crew) accomplished it. I think it was Josh that had the landscaping business and skillfully handled dealing with digging out a tree in one of the brick potters, recommended what shrubbery had to be removed to prevent future damage to the exterior brick potters, cut back some rhoddies in the right areas and spreaded the dirt from the removed planter to make a gentle slope (that looked nice and wasn't too steep) so I didn't have to have a bunch of dirt trucked out. They did a great job cleaning and inspecting my chimney. They responded to my request for a quote for chimney sweep on yelp with the most reasonable rate in Seattle! After we decided to go with them were able to schedule a date about a month out. They showed up early, wore a mask, and were super respectful when working in and on top of our home. I have no idea if the previous owners ever cleaned the chimney, but it was awesome to finally have a clean one! No more gunk build up and we are able to use the ash trap. They did say our chimney would need additional masonry repairs and would come back with a quote. We never received a follow up... We don't have the budget for any major repairs at the moment so we also didn't push for it. We hired MK & Sons Masonry this summer to redo our chimney crown, redo the flashing, put on new chimney covers, and seal the entire area around the chimney. They were on site when they said they would be, contacted me about issues they wanted to alert me to, and when I got home, I couldn't have told you they were there other than the fact the chimney looked brand new and the vent covers were on. They left no trace they'd been on site, but the work looked phenomenal. They took close up pictures to show me the work from areas a person can't see unless they're on the roof. The work is fantastic. After a few winters of slower, smokier starts in our wood stove, we finally called MK & Sons to get the stovepipe cleaned. Their bid was very competitive and we were promptly scheduled. Josh appeared exactly on time (we hate that "4 hour work window" waiting time that some contractors use). He covered and sealed around the stove with tarps and tape to keep the area dust-free and vacuumed out 9 years of ash that had accumulated in the upper firebox chamber. I have a great experience with this company! First, Mitch was able to do me a free estimate within a week even in high season, and give all the plan for chimney repair and found issues. The quote was very competitive. The thing which convinced me most was the level of experience he had and that he actually was able to formulate the issues and our questions even better than ourselves during the talk. At the day when I have ordered the service the crew came in time, and did all the external work on renewing the masonry in a day and a half, so that the chimney now looks absolutely like new (before it was with black/green moss between the bricks and some bad joints, and some cracks in the crown). My husband and I have lived on a lake for 12 years now. We have recently removed a 16' tall by 45' long hedge and acquired quite a bit more real estate to our back yard.
