I'd been wanting to try this place for months, since it's close to my work, but the many 1-star Yelp reviews scared me away. But, my coworker John - who is a blue-collar food connoisseur of sorts, and has made many good suggestions for my Yelp reviews - eats here often. Last week, he brought a pepperoni pizza from here back to the shop, and gave me a couple slices. I have to say, it tasted excellent! Actually, I liked Excellent's pizza better than pizza from Big Cheese! It was so good, that I went back to Excellent Pizza later that week, to get a small pepperoni pizza of my own. The crust is the perfect consistency, and the cheese, pepperoni and sauce all blend together in a delicious medley. Best of all, it did not give me heartburn. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because the cheese and toppings tend to slide off the pizza. I called my order ahead and went to pick it up. While I wouldn't describe the owner and his wife as warm, gregarious people, I also didn't find them rude, as other reviewers have described them. But, I'm not there to make friends, just to get delicious pizza. As for other reviewers' hygiene concerns, the kitchen appeared clean, and I don't care if they wear gloves or not, as hand-washing goes a long way. I am so disgusted after 27 years of being a faithful customer. To serve food like this is absolutely disgusting. I am so upset by this. I was a loyal customer and bragged about this place. Not anymore I am done, and burnt onion rings. Their feta and spinach pizza is a joke--crumbles of feta. Today my steak sandwich fell apart because no one cares enough to toast the bread. I live in Florida now but every time I come to Providence I have to stop here. This is the only place that stays consistent with customer service and the pizza is delicious. I have seen different reviews and like I don't think they going to the same place lol. I will say go and experience it your self, you go there for food and that's the best part. The pizza is okay not the greatest, I would rate this place a 3.4 they make the food really quick and the ingredients taste pretty fresh. I am not a fan of the crust but chicken wings and Gyros are really good. One really disappointing thing about excellent pizza is that the customer service is horrible. The employees are very rude and always try to hang up on you fast while someone is ordering food. They are not friendly at all. Ordered for the first time today online. Antipasto with Balsamic dressing. Head over to pick up and they didn't have my dressing which was no big deal, it happens. He offered me a bottled beverage "on him" for the inconvenience, which was very nice, and appreciated. As much as I read reviews about the employees / owner, it is true attitude is a thing, but man, that food is incredible. I grew up in the area for 15+ years and have been disappointed. Gotta have tough skin and enjoy this real atmosphere. I personally been around it my whole life and got used to it, that's what gives it the character knowing it's so raw. The steak and cheese grinder is delicious, I love how they cook the steak / roast the bun, and then they bake it again with the steak in it ! Definitely doesn't live up to its name. Not so excellent. Like the other reviews, I found the pizza to be very greasy very difficult to eat straight out of the oven. All the toppings fell right off. Very little sauce and the sauce that was there had no real flavor to it. Yes I haf buffalo wings, but the sauce on the buffalo wings actually out powered the chicken and it was soooo hot that you never got the true flavor. Not the cleanest place or greatest customer service, but I usually rate by food quality. I eat italian grinders any chance I get and this one was pretty good. I was disappointed that it only has one type of meat which was salami, but it did not lack flavor. Bread tasted fresh and soft. I asked for banana peppers on it which gave it some kick. 10/15/17 at or about 9:45 pm I stopped at Excellent Pizza since postal carrier had recommended it. I walked in to no greeting, no friendliness, not being asked what I would like. Just silence from the counter guy with no personality and an attitude I can only describe as unfriendly and waiting for ME to speak. I had to ask for a menu. He actually tossed it on the counter in front of me without handing it to me. He took my order and took a previous sandwich out of the oven and placed it on wrapping paper he had placed on the counter. Moving along, I ordered a small veal parm sandwich. He then placed his hand over the sandwich on the paper, cut it while touching the food. No gloves, no clue. He went to the prep table, started building another sandwich, no glove, no clue and put that second sandwich in the oven then picked up a paper, cardboard type plate that he used for meat of the current sandwich that he had dropped on the floor. When he picked it up he tossed on the top of a pile of what looked like a small stack of similar paper prep material in the back area of the kitchen visible to anyone looking. That was it for me. I hollered, "Not only are you not wearing gloves but you put that item your dropped on the floor back on the counter. His asinine response was, and I quote; "It's a plate." I told him "if it hit the floor it belongs in the trash." No clue, no care. I told him I was out of there and left. Knowing this was a family owned business I wondered if the family knew what this degenerate was doing to the business but now, after reading the reviews of others, it seems he's a clone. Obviously, if this drone picks items off the floor to put back into the production of food products I have reason to think he is capable of anything. I am actually thinking of a complaint to the health department based on what I had witnessed. I'll be damned if I ever go back and it seems they haven't claimed this business on YELP either. Wonder why. All part of that "We do it all to you" attitude? This is not an "off day" as suggested by one reviewer. It's an ongoing process and the second (last) time I care to experience it. This past inauguration day, I walk into the grocery store next to Excellent Pizza, a restaurant that I have been a faithful customer since the 90's, and I buy 2 cans of Ginger Ale. I asked the cashier if he had straws. And he kindly tells me, he did not have any. So on the way to my car, I thought, "oh, let me see if I can grab a couple straws from Excellent Pizza". I walk in and see the owner sitting at the end of the counter as she is talking to a couple clients who are also at the counter. I walk up to her and say "excuse me, could I steal couple straws". And this was her reply, as the box of straw sat there right in front of her, at arms reach. "NO!!!" At her first "NO" I thought she was joking, I smirked and asked her "are you serious?". Still smiling. She continues: "Yes!! Why? Are you buying a drink here? If you were buying a drink here, yeah but if not, then NO, nothing is free here, What do you think this is here, the White House? She's extremely loud and rude, so that the customers at the counter can hear her including the other customer eating at one of the tables. At that point, I kept my mouth shut and walked out... Now please tell me; 1) Was I wrong for asking for 2 straws? And Just shake it off and keep walking in there with a big smile and keep ordering , like that just didn't happen. Close to my office so I tried it . The woman behind the counter took my order, then disappeared. I ordered a cheeseburger sub, which they put in the oven? ...so after like 20 minutes she comes running out and opens the oven and I see her take out a charcoaled sandwich...and then she tries to wrap it up! I said, I think it's a little burnt. The guy who is fixing the refrigerator says...that's just a little over-toasted. The lady then says, "you want new bread?". I said yes, please. After about 5 more minutes she opens the oven...takes out the new toasted bread and slaps all of the contents from the old burnt bread on it. I left and took it back to the office. I have been coming here since I started coming to RI in 1996. It's a Greek style pizza made by super friendly people. We got our wedding rehearsal meal from here. Their Italian grinders are cotto salami, but wicked tasty. The peppers they use for hots are delicious. I not only enjoy getting to eat my food from here, I also enjoy talking with the owners and employees. read more

I have been going to this pizza place for years now. I remember going with my dad and always ordering the same thing, chicken grinder and a large pizza. I've never had a problem with the food at all, their food is delicious. Whenever I am craving food from here I dread calling because every single time they are rude, for example I called today I placed my order for delivery and I was expecting to pay through the phone because I do not have cash on me, as soon as I'm about to tell the guy I'm going to pay through the phone he hangs up on me. Mind you I already know what to expect when I call this place but I'm nice and place my order like I would in any other place. But honestly after so long it's getting really annoying and it's getting to the point where I most likely won't order from here anymore.
