Unfortunately, overall, I am quite disappointed. Two years ago, we had three quotes to re-do our whole roof. It was not an easy roof because it has a lot of different slopes and weird angles. We had three quotes, one was twice the other two, so we decided to go with one of the two lower ones, which was Excelsior. Especially because it is considered one of the best in town. They did the job in two days. I am far from an expert, so I can only say that it looked nice at the end. However, with the first rain the kitchen hood started pooring water over the stove. Excelsior came back right away (they are really responsive) and they said things had not been done really really right and needed to be fixed, which they claimed they did. The next rain we had the same problem. So, they came back a second time to fix the previous fix. So, far things are holding at the hood. However, we discovered just recently that a gutter that they said they would have taken care over the roof (a place i cannot access easily) they actually did not. The gutter is super-rusted beyond imagination and needs to be changed. It was rusted even two years ago but i guess they decided to skip the difficult repair and tell me it was all fine. read more

I interviewed three recommended roofing companies, looking for one that would replace my 61-year-old skylights. I have a foam roof (which I love but most roofers hate because you can't easily make modifications without risk of leaking). I didn't want to spend the money to replace the roof altogether. Two of the firms honestly confessed that they would not guarantee anything unless they replaced the whole roof. But Mark Powers at Excelsior Roofing was willing to work with me. His "bedside manner" can be a bit gruff, but he knows his trade and walked me through the alternatives. We agreed on the kind of skylights, the risks, what I should do with the foam roofing company after the skylights were installed, and so on. Scheduling was a challenge because I wanted the foam roofers in on the day after the skylights went in. Mark found a spot in the schedule that would work, earlier than I expected, and something that the foam roofers could do as well. The team arrived just after the appointed time (9:00am), removed the old skylights, built up the curbs exactly as specified, and installed the new skylights. They had to improvise a bit and cut through some 1x4 moulding in the bathroom to accommodate the opener handle (I should have removed the moulding before the installation, since it is superfluous). They finished in good time, cleaned up, and departed. The crew was very professional and courteous. The foreman did a thorough inspection of the work from inside the house. He found a piece of gasket that had slipped a little in the kitchen skylight and had the guys remove the skylight, trim the gasket, and replace it so it didn't show. I respect and appreciate that kind of attention to detail. So multiple cudos to Mark and Excelsior Roofing: (1) They had the lowest bid of the three top-tier companies I interviewed. (2) The work was superb and matched all specifications. (3) The installers were timely, courteous, and efficient. (4) They worked with me to accommodate a demanding schedule. Because of this, the job was completed three days ahead of the (early) incoming storm. Neither of the other two candidates would have made that deadline. When my other owners in our 3 unit HOA in a 105 year old Edwardian agreed to go with Excelsior, I was beyond excited. With winter approaching and a 22 year old tar and gravel roof that according to 3 individual inspectors "could only last one more season," I wanted to take no chances on the quality of the work. Especially with us being on the top unit and with two young children. Mark and his crew churn out roofs on a weekly basis and post extensive pictures of every single job on Facebook. I would check the photos every day until our appointment was finally due. When the time came, it was like waking up on Christmas morning. 4 trucks and 14 uniformed, union, professional roofers showed up. Eduardo, the foreman, informed me on the whole process and they went to work. They had the old roof off before lunch and two watertight layers by the end of the first day. By 3PM the next day, they were done, immaculate in their cleanliness, and showed me pictures of a roof that I could be proud to show anyone. I also liked how they used a self adhering modified bitumen roofing system that did not require torching or using other pollutants, all zero VOC according to the manufacturer. Excelsior is the best!! They're a family roofing business that's been around for many years with a great reputation that I originally found in the Diamond Certified directory. This was the pre-Yelp days where I had to rely on Diamond Certified, Good Service Guide and E.C.H.O. references. I am part of a small S.F. condo homeowners association of townhouses, therefore, a lot of roof area. I did research for getting bids from roofing contractors (a total of 5). Three recommended roof replacements. Two recommended maintenance (patch and seal) which extends the existing roof life another 5-7 years, prior to total replacement. Mark, the owner of Excelsior, was one of the two. They know their business well. Not only did he seem the most knowledgeable about roofing, he was very honest. He could have recommended total roof replacement and made a lot of money on our group of homes, but he didn't. He went as far and said that the original roofers did a very good job when the homes were built; the reason roof replacement was not yet necessary. When Mark submitted his bid estimate, for a job our size, we were amazed by the price. Going with Excelsior saved our association, as we had to front for an expense even more costly than roof replacement just a short time later. This was 5 years ago. During the recent heavy rains, one of the units reported a leak. Excelsior to the rescue!! Of course I called Mark early Monday morning before work hours and left a message. He called me back within 20 minutes. His brother came in 2-3 hours, inspected that roof section, and I asked him to check the condition of the rest of the roof for possible replacement or another possible maintenance. He said the rest of the roof is fine and to have it checked in another couple of years. Honesty runs in the family. He was very through as he explained the condition of the section and how it would be addressed. He mailed their company's detailed bid estimate the very next day. We just had Excelsior Roofing work on removing our existing pitched roof and putting in a new one. I would definitely recommend them to anyone. I got their name from a highly yelped-starred contractor who said he always used them and was very happy with them. We checked them on Yelp saw the good reviews & scores, and got them to give us one of the 4 bids we had for the project. They came with the lowest price, but most importantly, they were the only ones to give us two quotes; one for a more basic job, one for a bigger project (which we took). All the others definitely thought we had to have the bigger project done and left us with a feeling that they would start working and 'find' more things to work on. Excelsior was very straightforward to deal with, very prompt in responding to queries. They did all the work in one day. We needed some work done on our roof - an old patio cover removed, lightwell flashing repaired, and gutters cleaned. We contacted a handful of roofers before Excelsior, and were given vague timeframes of up to several months before they would even come out to bid on the work. So, it was unexpected when Excelsior responded to our inquiry right away, especially during the rainy season. Within a couple weeks they came out to do the bid and showed up exactly on time (Comcast could learn a few things from them!). They presented a fair bid right away addressing the issues we had discussed, and did not try to scam us with additional unnecessary work (it had been several years since the roof was inspected). They scheduled and completed the job 10 days later, all while we were away at work. Everything was done exactly as we had asked with no mess or debris left over. The clean up was the best part. The new roof looks good, and they replaced our tiles as well. We went with them on the strong recommendation of our neighbors. Super nice guys, went out of their way to clean all areas where the debris went, and even hosed down the neighbors sidewalk. The only thing is I wish we'd had a little warning about how much space in the road their trucks were going to take up so I could run it by the neighbors first. I got 4 quotes from reputable roofing companies to replace both my tar & gravel flat roof and the terra cotta roof on the front slope of my house in the Richmond District. I've had quite a bit of experience with repairing and replacing roofs, so I knew to go only with companies that have good reputations and that explain exactly what they propose to do and why. I asked Bill Powers (Mark's brother) several questions after I got the proposal, as I did with the other short-list bidders. I was convinced that Excelsior was a first rate roofer and proposed to use top-grade materials and methods, as well as offering a fair price. So I chose Excelsior for this job, and I'm glad I did. They exceeded my expectations. Not only did they do a first rate job (I personally inspected several times during the work progress), but they were prompt, quick with at least 10 workers on my roof the tear-off day, and courteous. They weren't the low bidder, nor were they the high bidder, but I've learned my lessons from past experience and felt I made a good call. For example, the copper flashing they installed at the tile edges was simply a piece of master craftmanship. So was the tile work, and the built-up flat roofing too. My previous flat roof lasted about 23 years with one maintenance job in between. The tile roof had never been replaced since the house was built in 1936. I recently had 3 layers of shingle torn off my house and a completely new roof put on. I got bids from several companies. Excelsior wasn't the cheapest, but I got a really good feeling from Mark's ability to communicate and address the details of the job, so it seemed like a good investment--and I was so right. It's easy for a contractor to hand-wave and for the customer to just hope that things will be done right, but I know from hard experience that the "devil is in the details" and it's easy to run into problems. Someone who addresses things clearly and really knows his stuff is worth a lot. My situation was complicated because of the position of my house in relation to my neighbors' and the fact that my house has leaked for years from unknown sources. My experience with Excelsior was stellar. Mark was fantastic about working things out with my neighbors, he found an open seam of my house that wasn't visible to me and likely causing leaks and fixed it (it wasn't on the roof), he warned me up front about all the possible problems, he was really on the ball about creatively customizing the job to resolve the issues at my house. When the guys were here, the foreman, Richard, was communicative and pleasant, and all the guys were nice. Some roofers use unskilled laborers but I was glad to know these were union workers who knew what they were doing! They spent a lot of attention on detail and doing things well, they cleaned up beautifully, they were available if I needed to talk to them--it was really quite good. We had one mishap, when someone walking on the scaffolding accidentally broke a window pane, but they immediately called a window guy to come replace it. Roofing is a heavy job with lots of heavy equipment and of course sometimes things happen--but they handled it beautifully. And then the joy, when it poured rain, and for once, my house didn't leak! I can't say enough good things about the crew and owners at Excelsior. We had a leaking roof last fall (Oct. 2009) during some heavy rainstorms. We live out in the Parkside where the wind and rain can be heavy at times. We had previously gotten 2-3 estimates from roofing contractors and decided to go with Excelsior. However, we hadn't yet signed the contract when the rains came and our roof started leaking. Mark sent his crew over to do a quick patch while we signed the contract and got on their project work calendar. The patch held up great until they finished the new roof installation a couple of weeks later. We had some questions after the installation which they answered quickly with personal visits. While Excelsior's price quote was a bit more than the other 2 quotes, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these guys because their customer service was excellent! read more

Fantastic and unbelievable experience. I had two estimates on a new roof because I had a couple of leaks. I have lived in my house 10 years and didn't know how old the roof was. The two estimates were between $8000 and $9000. Excelsior told me the roof had several more years of life left and it only needed a few repairs. The estimate came to $825.00. The roof problems are now repaired by a most wonderful professional and I will have Excelsior back every year from now to check my roof and when the time comes, they will put on the new roof. read more

Excelsior replaced my entire roof. These guys were fast, efficient, courteous, and utterly willing to take the time to explain everything I had questions about. They added a solar fan to my roof to vent heat buildup, replaced missing roof boards, and left it about 4 times better than it had been before they arrived. They finished in well under the estimated time, and they cleaned all of the construction detritus from the inside, the back yard, and the front yard before they left. I was also extremely appreciative of how they moved the date of my install up in response to my anxiety about the coming El Nino season. I feel so much better now that I know for sure that my roof is completely solid! They are not cheap, but their work isn't cheap either, and it's worth it to know that I won't have to deal with that issue for the next 25 years. read more

Despite their being extremely busy, we arranged an appointment and Mark Powers came by to inspect a few days later and said that with a bit of maintenance, it could easily last another 5-8 years, so that's what they did. I didn't even need to be home: I left for work in the AM and by the time I got home later that day they had done a great job and everything had been neatly cleaned up. Then the rains hit and we noticed that the leak had not be repaired as the "professional" had claimed. Should have been a simple job. Will never go back. read more

I had convinced myself that I had a problem with my roof - there was some moss growing and I knew that the gutters weren't in great shape. Bill came out and made an assessment and did what I feel very strongly is proof of a great, honest company - he recommended that nothing be done. I was so appreciative - he explained what was going on, that things were in good shape, and to leave it alone. I am so grateful. That alone is reason to use them when you have real work to be done. So honest. Locals who care to do it right. I got 3 bids on my roof... all companies that are highly reviewed on Yelp. The first company pushed to sell me a whole new roof for 12K never mentioning that all I needed was a bit of maintenance. The 2nd company said it needed some repairs that would cost $4k!! Excelsior told me right off the bat that it only needed about $1k of maintenance and repairs: relining a wooden gutter, some hot tar replacement to tighten things up, a few shingles, the cover to a light well, etc. Excelsior was on time and super easy to work with... Mark and his family grew up and live in SF... they love the city and care about doing high quality work without ripping people off. Buy local... some of the other companies are based outside of SF and probably don't have the same allegiance. Important to get at least 3 bids, otherwise you'll never know the truth about what you really need. read more

Don't count on these guys to be of any help - sent them an e-mail request to take a look at our roof ahead of the rainy season and we received back a form e-mail (highlighted in yellow) saying that they are "not checking on conditions of roofs" and that "the demand on our company is too much at present." After carefully negotiating the terms of our contract and AFTER confirming with Mark Powers twice about the work to be done and AFTER we had actually hired Excelsior roofing to do work for us, then and only then did Mark Powers refuse to stand by his original contract. He even went so far as to attempt to negotiate down the level of work needed verbally with my husband which was not in keeping with our written agreement. Even still, I tried to give him some wriggle room, letting him know that I was willing to talk to him about compensating him for future unexpected expenses. But it gets worse: I guess he was too busy berating me and talking over me on the phone, explaining how his UNION people expected to be paid for their time and he wanted money - more of it - regardless of his initial commitment to me, that he did not hear the part about my being open to paying him more down the line. It became painfully obvious that he was just not happy to do the work he had promised to do for that price and wanted out. Mark Powers not only refused to stand by his estimate, he was so rude to me on the phone that my husband fired him on the spot - which he was hoping for, anyway, I guess . We were ready not only to have him repair our roof, but to replace it in the future and also to recommend him to our (many) homeowner friends in the San Francisco area. From start to finish this company was top notch. Great communication throughout the process and always available to answer my questions. From estimate to day of work everyone made this so easy. They always arrived on time, early in fact and completed the work in one day. I left for work and came home to a new roof and very clean property. I could not tell they were even here except for the new roof of course. I was most pleased that in this very busy time with roofing companies, Mark fit me in during our dry spell and I am shocked that I was able to get a new roof installed in February.
