For this project, we built a new garage, converted a former garage into a new master bedroom with en suite bathroom. We also remodeled a kitchen and installed underfloor heating. This is our third home remodel/extension and our third contractor. We felt lucky with our first, who was a recommendation, but when he moved out of state we were faced with the daunting task of interviewing contractors and soliciting recommendations on Facebook and Nextdoor. We found one but then went through a painful kitchen renovation and house extension with someone who nickel'd and dimed us on the smallest things, gave the bare minimum of support, and provided sub-par work in the end. I'm still bothered by the crooked kitchen entry that's off center and unexplained creakiness in one corner of the room. In the middle of our kitchen reno, our friend had just finished a garage conversion with Joseph and was raving about his quality work and attention to detail. With our latest phase we had an idea of what we wanted and called Joseph to discuss the project. Through his experience building multi million dollar homes and countless renovations he listened to what we were thinking but then provided a few alternatives that ended up working better for our house (and budget) in the long run. We ended up splitting a large bathroom into two bathrooms, which enabled us to convert two bedrooms into master bedrooms that we see so often in new builds. In addition we closed a rarely used dining room and converted it into an office/spare bedroom. All Joseph's suggestions really aimed to maximize the use of our house while keeping a good flow. Of course he could've just done what we asked and taken our money, but what anyone really wants is a partner that looks out for your best interest because he really cares about each project and each client. We went from a 3 bedroom 3 bath to a 4 bedroom 4 bath using our current space and it was so well done that my sister commented that she couldn't even tell that it wasn't this way in the first place. Joseph's sub-contractors are all amazing and friendly people who all aim to provide the best work possible. He has a great relationship with all the people from which we needed extra work and you can tell that they made themselves especially available because of their relationship with him. Joseph was at our home almost every day to make sure everything was progressing to his high standards and he was extremely responsive when we needed to talk to him. Joseph is also one of the most honest people I've worked with and you can tell he truly cares about each and every client. This would be the second time that I have hired Expo to remodel a room in my home, however this is my first review for Expo, let's start by saying I consider Joseph and Amit good friends now, and I love that because it's much easier to talk with a friend than just someone you hire! Expo Home Design and Remodeling just completed an extensive remodel of our home, and it turned out beautifully. We had an excellent working relationship with Joseph and are thrilled with our new home. Joseph had very insightful suggestions for the design stage and the final work product is lovely. Any issues we encountered after moving back in were rectified the next day - literally. Our remodel included the removal of seven interior walls, five windows and two exterior doors. The fact that Joseph is a contractor was invaluable with all of the necessary structural work and in dealing with all of the surprises an 85-year-old house can spring on you. The project was done on budget and was completed within the estimated time frame. The only delay was due to the fact that some of our appliances and finishes had very long lead times, but it was worth the wait and was no fault of Joseph. He worked with the city authorities so that our permit was granted on the first attempt and all the building code inspections passed with no issues. I had a great experience with Jacob and Shay. When my kitchen flooded in June 2019, it was a very overwhelming experience. After calling a water restoration company, we then had to start looking for contractors to repair the kitchen. We were working with USAA homeowner's insurance and some HELOC funds. We met with 5-6 contractors, but Shay and Jacob were the ones who we connected with the most. They were kind, fast on the quote return, and easy to work with. We ended up having them do a number of projects, including in the back and front yards, because we were so happy with each project t hey completed. But I think the best display of the work we got accomplished is in the kitchen, by far our biggest project. After raising the roof (and removing a closet), Expo Home's team redid everything: floors, cabinets, and countertops. Everyone now says that our kitchen looks like a model kitchen or a celebrity kitchen. The guys really did a great job! He was very apologetic, felt bad for what had happened before, and reassured me those guys that worked on my bathroom are not working for him anymore. He's a business owner that tries to do his best. I happen to be looking for a contractor for another project, so I asked him if he would be interested in coming over, discussing what happened with the previous project, and give me a quote for this current one. Shay Alfandari and his crew made a royal mess of my house. Where do we begin? We hired Shay in 2019 to do a complete interior remodel on a 1,600 sq ft house in LA County. After about a year, with the job incomplete, we fired him. Shay's crew replaced the HVAC system. They dismantled the existing ductwork, which contained asbestos, and left the disturbed asbestos in the attic. They did not inform us that our attic contained disturbed asbestos, which is dangerous and unethical. What should have been a straightforward mitigation became much more expensive and hazardous, due to Shay's negligence. The new HVAC system installed had many problems. The system was oversized, and the return was undersized and improperly installed, causing the furnace to overheat easily. The AC evaporator was overfused, possibly voiding the warranty. Shay's crew did not properly test the system, so the first time we used it, there was smoke and an unnecessary 911 call. We are currently spending money fixing the botched HVAC installation. Shay's crew installed the tankless water heater incorrectly. First, they installed it without a condensate drain. This caused the condensate to back up and shut off the system. When they finally came to install the drain, I had to teach them how to do it, as they did not understand the installation instructions. Even with the water heater working, performance in the master bathroom was terrible. The reason was that Shay's crew did not follow best practices for hot water runs of 50 feet or longer: they should have installed a recirculating pump. Again, fixing Shay's negligence cost us a lot of money and headache. While installing the range, Shay's crew discovered that there wasn't room for the plug behind the range. This calls for a recessed receptacle. Instead, their solution was to unscrew the existing receptacle and just shove it into the wall, wires dangling. I confronted them about this, and their response was "Don't worry, the inspector will never see it." Of course I made them fix it, but who knows what other negligence I didn't spot? In uncountable other ways, the workmanship of Shay's crew was shoddy. Walls are not flat, trim has gaps, paint is sloppy, electrical fixtures are cockeyed, etc. Some things like the mechanical systems can be fixed, but the only way to fix the general shoddiness of the interior would be to start over. In the words of an independent professional who examined the work, "This is basic stuff. Whoever did this, didn't know what they were doing." In the end, we gave up on the idea that Shay and his crew had it in them to fix any of this, and we fired them. In my opinion, Shay does not deserve to have a license, and he doesn't belong anywhere near this business. read more

We had hired them to build a closet out of some dead space, as well as redo some shelving and our outdoor patio. Not only has Shay been the most communicative contractor we've ever worked with, the team was also incredibly fast, efficient, and delivered such quality results. We feel very lucky to have just finished a large home renovation, consisting of a JADU garage conversion and front paneling/façade project, with Joseph Knafo and Expo Home Design and Remodeling. We had started the planning stages of this project with another contractor, but after many months of disagreements, we began conversations with others. Joseph and Expo were recommended by a realtor neighbor and friend and after a number of initial conversations, we quickly moved from the planning stage to pulling permits to actual construction with Joseph. Here are the ways that Joseph excelled: 1. He knows the right "look" for the market. When it comes to the molding, the doors, a full quartz backsplash, the type of flooring, the width of lights ("6" is the old look, 4" more current"), the list is endless, Joseph knew what the correct look, materials, standards and expectations for today's market is. Our prior contractor had very little design intuition and ultimately just didn't "get" it. Joseph does, and beyond. Joseph has spent many years not just as a contractor but as a builder of high-end homes throughout the valley, including in Sherman Oaks, Studio City and Valley Village. In working with him, we helped ensure that the updated look of our home would appear like the major new construction builds in these neighborhoods - and not an obvious remodel. 2. High-quality, responsive and loyal trades and sub-contractors. One reason that you hire a contractor is due to their personal relationships. Joseph's trades and subs all have longstanding relationships with him - this seemed to help quite a bit in pricing and even more so in responsiveness. Whenever a trade was needed, they were there (sometimes literally that day). No waiting, no complaining, and only the best out there in the market. Many of Joseph's core trades (Framer, Plumber, Electric, etc.) came out to our site over and over again, for free, in order to consult on details and make sure that the gameplan was fully understood by the entire group. 3. Attention to detail. Joseph or his team foremen would consistently show up - practically every day - and make sure that the workers on the site were doing the right thing, per our design, and fixing anything that didn't look correct. And if any element was a B+ solution, Joseph insisted on getting it up to an A. For example, we had an issue at first with our bay window roof not extending enough off the side of the window. It could have worked, but wouldn't have been perfect. Joseph had his Framer and team come back, on a Saturday, and completely re-frame this area of the house. He was also very responsive if we ever identified quality issues. 4. Communication and management. There was never one day that Joseph did not promptly return a call or text - from well before we even had a signed contract, through construction, and to current day. 5. Speed/quality/price - we got it all. Many say you have to sacrifice on one. We didn't. This major project - 400 square feet of new living space, including major foundation pouring, a bay window that required a structural engineer to plan and custom steel supports embedded within the foundation, a bathroom, a kitchenette, a laundry room, exterior Hardie-board siding, stucco - and all throughout, city inspections - was completed, from day one of demolition to the final approval from the city - in three months flat. The quality is unsurpassed. High-end builder level. And the price was very competitive. Joseph was neither the cheapest nor the most expensive bid we received throughout the process. I was most pleased by the customer service--there was an issue I wasn't happy about when the work was done--a light fixture was too high. When the owner found out, he called me personally, came to see it, and had someone out to lower the light that same day. Shay (and his assistant, Isaiah) handled our emergency bathroom remodel with professionalism and thoroughness. He navigated the red tape of the city permit office, kept us informed the entire way, and finished up the job by making certain we were happy with the tiling, paint scheme and layout of the redone bath. He even created a door through an unused closet to transform it into a master bath! In addition to other smaller jobs he included in the usual price, Shay and his guys completely rewired our home's electricity (which the inspector determined was an essential upgrade) and redid our plumbing from top to bottom - all of this for a very reasonable total price! We had earlier consulted with four other contractors, and none of them felt quite like a right fit. Expo Home Design wasn't even doing business in our area when we found him on Yelp, but Shay was willing to accommodate us despite our distance. Shay is straightforward, honest, reasonable and flexible. We liked him right away. I decided to make a huge sacrifice to convert my garage into a legal accessory dwelling unit, complete with full permits and in compliance with all Los Angeles city codes.
