Works well for what it is:: they give you the space advertised, it's air-conditioned in the basement (not on the first floor, though, where the loading dock gate is always open, which should be a security concern). Plenty of space for storing stuff, there's a loading dock, there are a couple doilies to use, hardly ever see anyone else loading/unloading. The "walls" between units are just corrugated metal, though. You could cut through them with a sharp tool. The big negative is that they jack up your rate after you're in, when its too late for you to move because all your stuff is there. Beware the price! They wanted to increase mine 40%, and did so twice over a year. I was able to talk it down the first time and left before second time. Overall it works well, hassle-free, able to get things whenever. read more

I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Extra Space Storage (Fairfax location). I had to call last minute and secure a storage space and the person on the phone was very clear, cordial and helpful. The e-mails were timely and clear and I felt my items would be very secure. When plans changed and I had to cancel 3 min before close I called their office and was worried no one would answer. To my surprise, Anika answered and said happily handled my request. I was so grateful that the company was reasonable and also answered the phone just before the close. When I called again (a week later) just to confirm that everything was handled, a man was very nice and left a message and Anika returned my call the very next day and confirmed everything was handled. AVOID. THIS. PLACE. I have had a 10X10 storage unit and a 10X30 storage unit here since 2014. They lure you in with a low rate, but are extremely aggressive with the rate increases. When I moves my stuff in, I was paying $262.00 per month on the 10X30 and $135.00 per month on the 10X10. Now I am paying $345.00 per month on the 10X30 and $171.00 per month on the 10X10. It is a total bait and switch. Extra Space is owned by an REIT (real estate investment trust). In that time, my rent has remained the same at $850.pp per month. This includes the landlord making improvements such as replacing appliances, installing wood laminate, installing tile floors, etc. An apartment has heat, A/C, electricity, water, etc.--a storage unit is bare with no amenities. So why is the rent on my storage unit going up, but the rent on my residence is not? If you follow the storage auction listings in the Washington Times printed edition, most of the auctions are from Extra Space, Public Storage, and Cube Smart. The corporate chains are owned by REITs that are snapping up locally owned storage facilities around the country. It appears their strategy is to lure you in with low rates, raise them aggressively until you cannot afford the payments, and then to auction off your property. You need to patronize locally owned storage facilities. The locally owned facility I used before coming year only raised my rates modestly in the four years I was with them (roughly equal to inflation). It used to be a clean storage with friendly n caring staff. But, Since Angie is gone the storage is slowly going down the hell. There's already a few customers planning to find another storage facility not only due to current situation with Angie that's gone. It took em over two month to find a new person n I'd noticed since she took over is losing more customers otherwise why would a big sign of "first rent for free would be in front of the storage!!!!! also I keep hearing the basement storage units had leaking occurring that one of the customers who's an artist it Destroyed his paintings. I stored a ton of stuff here when I moved in with the boyfriend a couple of years ago. I've been please from start to finish. Professional staff. Honesty about rates and rate increases. Climate controlled. Limited access to the facility. Winner. Winner. Chicken dinner !! Even today, when we showed up with the movers and ended our lease(with no advance notice) they were superb. Rented a 10x15' climate controlled unit for $154 online. At the time of rental, I asked if the rates would go up. The on-site customer service rep said he did not know if it would or by how much. 6 months later find out online that the new rate is $270 per month. Received a card in the mail with the rate change warning a few days later. After contacting them, we were told the new rate is the regular rate and cannot be discounted or reduced. Moved everything out and now rent right down the street with a drive up unit for less than what I paid at this location. Don't recommend unless you are renting for short term storage because of the surprise rate increase I received. There was a lot of grass and dirt from what appeared to be a mower in the unit I rented, which was below ground and accessed with an elevator. When I moved in, the unit still had junk bamboo shelves from the previous renter so we called the guy at the office and he removed them. read more

Everything is good until you need to stop renting! I recommend calling the 800 number instead as the individuals in the store will not tell you what your rights are and they will mock you in the process. I knew of this company through other soldiers using them before going to tour overseas and I gave them a try. Literally called them while enroute to the Prosperity location and they had a unit I was looking for set aside upon arrival. Off loaded and unpacked in 30 minutes, I appreciated their efficiency to match mine in the spur of the moment! I recommend Extra Space Storage in a pinch and for long haul rental. I went to my storage unit a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday to get a few things out of it, and found water dripping onto my stuff from a pipe. I tried to reach a staff person but no one was available. So I moved my stuff away from the drip and covered nearby stuff in plastic - with no help from the staff who are not there on Sundays. On Monday morning I called, and they told me I would have to make another trip out there; they could not get into my storage unit without me present even to fix a drip. I made the trip and got there about 5:50 pm (they close at 6). The office was locked already and it took me about 15 minutes to locate the one staff person there. They have now reportedly fixed the drip but offered no compensation for damage to my stuff or for the fact that I found the leak, not them, even though though they said it was due to some work they had had done the previous week. If I had not happened to stop by the unit there's no knowing how much damage could have been done. Also the fact that even once they knew there was a problem they could not go in and fix it without my making a second trip out there is ridiculous. They should be able to access pipes that can potentially leak into storage units without the customer present in case of emergency - which this could have been had the leak/drip been worse. What if I had been overseas? Also when they do work that can cause leaks they need to be able to double-check and make sure customers' stuff is safe. That's why people store their stuff there, isn't it? I'm removing my stuff ASAP and will not store with them again. read more

We were in a pinch when we were moving because the lease on our rental house was expiring before we found another rental to move into. We had to get a storage unit last-minute, and the staff at this Extra Space Storage facility were very helpful and very nice to deal with. They made sure to answer all our questions and made themselves available whenever we needed anything. Additionally, when we moved our belongings into our first storage unit, we realized we needed a second smaller one for some items that wouldn't fit in the first. We were able to go to the office the day we realized it and get setup within 20 minutes with a second storage unit. The facility seems secure and was very clean... no cleaning was needed of the units when we took possession of them and the property was very clean in general. Even the prices of moving supplies in the front office was competitive to other stores in the area. Every interaction with them has been friendly and successful, always accomplishing what we needed. We will absolutely be recommending this storage facility to other people and will happily return if we are ever again in a situation needing somewhere to store our belongings. read more

Sadly, I get the feeling they want to say no before I even ask the question. I am happy she is the manager here. We rented a climate controlled storage space at the ExtraSpace Storage facility on Prosperity Avenue in Fairfax, Va in December 2014. Lakeisha Manigault gave me a very professional and comprehensive briefing on the facilities and storage options. The facility is well laid out and convenient. We back our SUV up to a rolling lift door, transfer goods to the waiting hand cart, and take it down the elevator to our storage space. We can empty the SUV and store the goods in less than 30 minutes. We expect our high level of satisfaction to continue. read more
