HORRIBLE BUSINESS PRACTICES! Ignore all the good reviews, because this location is holding my things hostage and not giving me any sort of idea when I will have access to my things. Here we are on week two with no access to my things in my unit. Almost two weeks ago now they sent an email saying "Extra Space Storage would like to inform you that there will be No Access to the property until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause." Could they be more vague? For a week of them treating the situation like some sort of covert cover up, I called multiple times and each time they told me they couldn't tell me what happened or when an update would come. On Saturday, they finally sent an update saying there was a fire at the facility and that the facility is still closed. No communication addressing when I will get access to my things. Meanwhile I am still paying for them to basically hold all of my belongings hostage. I am moving off island, and everything I own is in that unit. I've had to cancel movers two times, and my life is basically on hold waiting for them. My birth certificate and social security card are in there. My entire life is in the unit - including things that are not replaceable. At this point, I am questioning the safety of my things. If my things are water damaged, I would love to go retrieve them so I can try to save what I can before it is ruined forever. Is the way they are handling this whole situation even legal? I put my things in there to keep them safe during my transition of moving - but it looks like I will have to spend thousands to buy things I no longer have access. After 10 phone calls, I keep getting connected to the same woman at the Keaukaha facility who knows nothing and she is clearly not the one to help me or get me the info I need. I asked her 3x now to connect me to someone higher up and she said she would try to get someone named Maile to call me. It is a week later, no call or communication from Maile, or anyone. I have contacted Extra Space Storage through social media and email and have been told someone will call me. No one does. Am I supposed to be okay with the situation and patiently wait for more answers? I can't access my unit until further notice, but no one can say when that will be... read more

These guys have been great to work with. I'm on the mainland and working with the Hilo location for storage of goods. In the midst of a chaotic move, Extra Space Storage felt like an oasis each time I made a trip there. They have plenty of flat carts available for use in the lobby, making moving in and out of the unit much quicker and easier. There's even a nice clean restroom available next to the elevators. You can access your unit anytime day or night, but the office is open Monday-Saturday 9-6, I believe. The employee that helped me from day one up until the day I vacated the unit, was Maile and every interaction we had was both professional yet warm and friendly. The rates are definitely reasonable given how clean, quiet, safe, convenient, and professional everything is. Best storage option in Hilo! read more

The service and facilities here are great. Everything seems clean and orderly. The only problem we had was with the terminology. Don't assume that a "5 x 10" actually measures 5 feel by 10 feet. And don't assume when you're told on the phone that a unit is available, that it won't have a big post in the door way of the unit. Its very important for you to visit to select your unit. read more

Outstanding, very helpful. The building is clean. The 3rd floor units are above the water zone. They have moving carts that renters may barrow. Every office person has been very helpful. I agree in part to the other reviews - clean, temperature controlled, easy entrance, polite and helpful location manager. The BIG drawback is the pricing!! I set up my storage space account - automatic withdrawal each month - easy for me and they get their money every month. Initially my rate agreement for a 5 x 12 unit was $90 a month. The 5 x 10 units were in higher demand so I actually got a 5x12 for less than a 5 x10 which was $119/month. Good so far, then 5 months into my having the storage unit I received a rate change notice saying the price was going to increase - not just by a little, but by A LOT!! It went from $90 a month to $136.46 a month = a $46.46 a month increase which is a 52% increase!! I called to find out what was going on - I wasn't storing anything stinky or illegal; I wasn't playing the drums in the unit;my bank account charge always went through - so what was it?? When I talked to the manager of the Hilo location, she said it wasn't unusual for this to happen, in fact it was a regular occurrence. It was NOT her doing; it was her district manager's doing and the company policy. So I guess their strategy is get people to rent a storage unit for a good/reasonable price initially. Then wait several months and price gauge people - betting most people won't want to go through the hassle of moving their stuff out of the unit!!! Not good customer policy any way you look at it. I am buying a metal storage shed for less than $300 on amazon (free shipping) and putting in a floor for about $100. SO for less than $400 (3 months of paying extra space storage) I will have a storage unit in my own backyard, and the monthly rates will be zero. VERY DISAPPOINTED and hoping this review will help you NOT get price gauged. In case you're wondering (I sometimes do when I read some reviews) I do NOT have any connection to any other storage company, etc. I just hope this review prevents other people from getting taken advantage of! If enough people DID move their stuff out once they got their rate change notice, the company would probably stop doing this. read more
