Update: I've been there for a year now and they have twice now attempted rate increases of over 80% and forced me to argue my way down. I'm paying double what I agreed to pay when I first moved in and that's AFTER talking my way down (which by the way they'll absolutely do, despite what they say, if you just get aggressive enough). The district managers are complete cowards about it and are so desperate not to get on the phone because they know it's indefensible. Also in the year I've been there, minus the day I moved in I have never once: - Actually had anyone at the physical location answer the phone - Seen anyone physically in the office - Seen anyone who works there actually doing anything that needs to be done - Showed up and found the handcarts where they're supposed to be and not just scattered all around the facility - Opened my unit and not found things randomly knocked over (don't have a clue what goes on there all day but it's enough to damage your stuff) - And the manager, to this day, has never said a single word to me about the month I spent chasing them over the first rent increase (partially because he's never actually on site and partially because he's a coward) Do not rent with these people under any circumstances. My partner and I were excited to get some storage space close to our home- DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. DO NOT GO HERE. They do not care about you. We ordered a storage unit online, super easy. NOPE They called and set up a time to meet us. We went. No one was there. Except for other costumers who were told to come. We get a call back a few days later, no apology we think "fine, we need to set this up" we go the next day at the time agreed on and again, no one showed up. We get another call no apology just "it happens" and a request to try again. Lesson learn. Nope. We go up the street to Public Storage and get a unit that day with zero issues. read more

Saddle up your NOPEtopus and GTF on O of Extra Space Storage on Somerville Ave. The prices may be slightly lower (for the area), but the business practices are shady--and the whole place is guarded by an angry troll of a man(ager) who goes from "unpleasantly rude" to "outright aggressive" the moment you show the impertinence to ask any questions. If you want to do business with someone who hates women and/or people who ask simple, civil questions, then by all means: have at it. On the other hand, if you prefer calm civility and basic respect in your business relationships, avoid ESS at all costs (&, if you feel like it, read on about The Very Angry Man of ESS Somerville Ave). ------------- The manager I encountered when I showed up to see a prospective unit freely addressed me by my first name, but never bothered to introduce himself--so we'll just have to call him The Very Angry Man (or TVAM, for short). TVAM seemed in a bad mood from the get-go, but things first took a turn in the elevator going up to see a vacant unit. He's talking about how I'll load in by driving through the enormous loading doors on Dane St--oh, unless I have a moving truck. "They won't fit," he says. And, y'know, I'm surprised to hear that. I'm not invested in what kind of vehicle I rent to schlep stuff, and nor do I care where I park the thing to unload; I'm just surprised that we're talking about some of the biggest loading doors I've seen, and he says a truck won't fit through them. So I ask: "A moving truck won't fit through those huge doors?" OOOPS. I ASKED A QUESTION. TVAM gets defensive and starts going on about, fine, moving trucks fit through the doors, but it's the parking spaces--the parking spaces are too small. A truck means no one else can park. Trucks have to park elsewhere. One moving truck "shuts down my whole facility." On and on and on. I have nothing to say to this, so I just nod. "Mmmm." A moment passes. Still in the elevator. And then, inexplicably, he starts up again at a louder volume. "IT'S REALLY NOT NEGOTIABLE," he says. "[BLAH BLAH BLAH SOMETHING SOMETHING]"--and sweet jesus, I do not have the patience to be trapped in an elevator with an angry man angrily lecturing me about I don't even know what, so I interject to try and shut this rant down: "I'm not negotiating," I say evenly. "I was just curious." TVAM takes it up a notch again--from mere raised voice to an actively aggressive tone. "ARE YOU UPSET?! BECAUSE YOU SEEM UPSET." Now, let's break this down a little: "Are you upset?" is a DICK MOVE conversationally. There's no "safe" answer to that question, because it is not really a question: It is a challenge. TVAM does not, in fact, give a damn about how I feel; if he did, perhaps he wouldn't have gone all aggro with me in response to a very simple question (and while I am trapped in an elevator with him, at that). So in all honesty, yeah: I'm a bit freaked out. But I will also be damned if I'm going to give TVAM the satisfaction of intimidating me, so I say in an even more deliberately measured tone, "I'm fine." And he glares at me. And I refuse to look down. And sh!t just goes downhill from there. Some of the subsequent highlights include: 1) repeatedly walking down the maze-like halls of this place faster than I could follow; 2) getting right pissed when I wanted to pace-measure a supposedly square storage unit that was missing a corner; 3) aggressively talking over me to insist that my renter's insurance does not, in fact, cover my existing storage unit (I have a good insurance agent, and I trust her, so I'm pretty sure it does); 4) sneering at me when I asked where the light cord in one unit was, because every idiot knows "10x10 units don't have lights"... ...and, of course, 5) totally *rage-quitting* the tour when I had the temerity to ask about their rodent mitigation strategy. As in, TVAM tried to stare me down while stating, "We're not a good fit for you. You'll be happier in a brand-new facility. I'll show you out." Since there's really nothing to say to that, I simply gave a tight-lipped smile and turned to walk out of the dead-end hallway. Apparently he wanted a more dramatic reaction, because he just wouldn't shut up all the way to the elevator--and then, once we were in it, he did the super-aggro 'stare me dead in the eyes' thing *all. the way. back. down. again.* And then kept trying to shoo me down random hallways on the first floor while I kept repeating, "I will go out the way I came in." tl;dr: I got my first storage locker 9 years ago. I've had storage lockers in 4 cities on 2 coasts. This is not my first rodeo. But this was *FAR AND AWAY* the rudest, most f'd up encounter I've ever had in the process of finding or using a storage unit. If you want calm, civil, professional interactions while doing business--or if you just have a shred of principle--take your money and your stuff elsewhere. read more

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. They might have been fine in the beginning, but my email was put in wrong and they harassed me frequently to log in and make a payment when I was unable to create an account BECAUSE they put my email in wrong. I've had to call over 20 times in the past month to sort this out and they always appear friendly and helpful on the phone until I hang up and absolutely nothing has been changed. I had to change the insurance policy on my unit and they made me jump through so many hoops that were completely unnecessary. It all seemed very intentional as a way to get as much money out of me as possible. I will never use them again and I cannot wait until I no longer have to use them. read more

I stored some things here in a 5x5 unit for two months and had a perfect experience. Setup was great -- the manager at the desk was extremely friendly and helpful, and the in-person signup process was smooth as can be. I had both a lock on my storage space and a unique passcode to get into the facility after hours (if I remember correctly the passcode was good until about 10pm). My two months passed uneventfully. I went back to the storage space a few times to grab some stuff, and everything was good. The only hitch was that I was told from the outset that if I didn't have my stuff cleared out by the end of the second month's billing cycle, I'd be charged for that month. So I busted my ass to get everything out on the last day of the second month, only to discover (online, as this was a Sunday) that I needed to give them a week's notice so they wouldn't rebill me! I was pissed but resigned to my fate. They charged me for the third month. Lo and behold, about a month later I get a check in the mail from Extra Space Storage for the full amount of the third month! They fixed it without me even asking or making a fuss. THAT is what I call service. read more

Never, I repeat never trust your belongings with this company. From start to finish I had one of the worst experiences with Extra Space Storage. The funny part is that I based my decision to use this location based on their Yelp reviews. I felt obliged to give my feedback for future users. At check in I have never had the pleasure of speaking to a ruder manager. It got to a point where I had to ask him if he had a problem with me. Based on that experience alone I should have moved my belonging to another company. However, after the effort of moving all of my life into a 10 by 10 unit I wasn't ready to move it again. I was also never aware that they increase their rates automatically every 6 months. What I initially thought was a reasonable deal soon sky rocketed by about 20% that was automatically being debited from my account with no notification. After numerous calls with their reps they said it was in the contract. My recommendation to future users- find a good company that will maintain the same rates. Although you may pay a little more than what this company quotes in the long term they will increase their prices on you automatically. There is only one word for this business practice- SHADY. The final straw came during my check out. I was fed up with the increased automated monthly charges so I vacated my unit 15 days early. After follow up they said they would only give me a prorated refund if I contacted them a month prior to when I planned to leave. Once again, I found this unbelievable. So far I'm giving them a big 4 star. . . they'd get 5, but you'll see why I bring 'em down a wee notch. I went in today to get a small 5x5 unit for a month or two as we (fingers crossed) move from apartment to our own condo. The first month is "free" except for a $32 administrative fee, and of course the mandatory $9/month insurance. ;) I love "free" almost as much as i love free. After that i'm paying ~$60/month for the unit, but can clear out with 2 days notice. It is nice to have an extra dry/clean space to put stuff so we can clear out our apartment. And yes, the unit is clean, dry, and I put stuff into it about 5 minutes after signing the paperwork. The loading area is clean and dry and covered, and all seems on the up and up. I'll keep yelping til I'm done with the unit. . . read more

After having my stuff here for 6 months and checking out, I must say that I have mixed feelings. First, the good. The staff is very friendly, the place is kept very clean and there are elevators and carts available. The hours are decent (access to your unit is from 6 am-10 PM). Now the bad. Get ready for hidden charges. They force you to buy insurance on your things, even if you do not want it. I do not undesrtand why I was forced to buy insurance on things that, honestly, I would not have been to sorry to see be hit by a meteor. This was very upsetting. Another major con is the fact that after 5 months or so your rental rate will go up. That is, in my opinion deceitful. In short, I would not use this place again. Go to a place that has 24 access to your stuff, does not require some bogus insurance, and will not jack up your rental after a few months. There are plenty of options out there for much better prices. read more

I've had nothing but exceptional service and attention from everyone manning the desk or the phones when I call. I flew to the east coast to move some stuff into storage. I chose the Somerville Ave location because it was convenient (albeit much more expensive), however these were my deceased Mom's paintings and my Grandmothers carpets and my vintage leather collection, stuff that couldn't come with me to the tropics. 3 months after arriving home I get a call that they have flooded. The insurance max is $3000 which doesn't even cover my travel expenses nor are those things covered by the insurance company. While everyone there is very nice, the space is not safe to leave your valuables in. Extra Space itself did not offer me any sort of refund or help regarding the water and mold damage or travel arrangements and American Claims the third party insurer makes sure that it is as complicated as possible to claim the max payment requiring excessive detail in documentation. Why would someone pay almost $200 per month in rent for a 5'x5' cubby if this stuff wasn't important? How do you document the lifes work of a deceased artist? read more

My husband and I rented a space from Extra Space Storage on Somerville Ave., a couple of weeks ago. We met with the manager, Raynel Garcia who was absolutely wonderful! He took us around to show the available units, explained everything about the facility, rules, hours, contract etc. He was kind, knowledgeable, patient and just plain nice. We felt so comfortable thanks to Raynel we rented a space immediately. He is a big plus for Extra Space Storage to have as a representative of the company. Well done! read more

AVOID!!!! My stored items were destroyed by water damage. They don't know how the water came in and didn't seem all that concerned and they do not feel they have any responsibility beyond whatever insurance coverage takes care of. In other words, they believe they are not bound by basic implied warranties. Also, the units are supposedly climate controlled, but the place is insanely humid. If you store paper or cloth items here, they will get destroyed. I had to move everything out after spending a month bringing boxes over. All of the cardboard boxes were damp. Bait and Switch - The worst company I have ever dealt with, lured me in with a free month and a set rate only to raise it after 3 months, spoke to a person who works there about it and they said thats standard policy that they will raise your price every 3 months, I should have realized after they made me sign more papers than I did when I bought my home DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY unfortunately I needed 3 units for when I lost my home, I was late 2 days and they charged me a late fee and pad locked my unit even after I paid I went to access my unit 3 days later and the pad lock was still on the door and I had to wait until they came back from lunch to get them to open it. bottom line I would use a different place even though they may be higher price to start in the end you will save money. read more

I have used this place three different times during moves to avoid having to move all at once. Pretty much everything I own fits tightly in a 5x5 storage space. I always reserve my space online, it makes things easier. I have never had a problem here. I am not sure about long term storage but short term storage is awesome. I located between Davis and Union squares and has a parking bay inside the building. I find it helpful to keep a broom, cleaning supplies, and garbage bags. If you need cleaning supplies or some food market basket is right down the alley. read more

Our trailer Camper trailer was stolen from there secure units with cameras and coded access. I had wheel locks and ball hitch locks, which the employees had on the trailer and it was parked in front of a camera. They did not call the police and made us pay for the DVD to give the police information. Mr Young, the district manager called us and said they would help and did nothing but tell the BBB that our complaint was invalid because they were working with us. We have not heard from them in months and Mr Young does not return messages; we have refiled with the BBB. If you rent from them and you get robbed they will tell you it is not their concern. I only wish I could give them one less star. read more

We had been using West coast Storage for over a year, and they raised their rates astronomically. We knew a storage unit company was opening down the street from our home, and we contacted the owner prior to their opening. We were actually their first customer, and we have never been more pleased! They are an amazing company to deal with, and store your property. The Manager Cyndi is absolutely amazing! Not a good neighbor! The sidewalks that surround this business are impassable due to snow and ice many days after snowstorms. I went in to ask (nicely!) that some ice melt be applied to the pathways they are required to maintain and was met with a complete disregard for neighbors like me who need to walk in the street rather than break a bone on their sidewalk. Definitely a good, clean spot. The staff I interacted with were extremely personable and helpful. It fails to get five stars is because of the price. The nearby U-Haul competition offers units at at least half the rates offered by ESS; and while I believe that the quality of ESS is higher, it is certainly not twice as good. The price is high, but the cleanliness and professionalism of this facility really is top notch, and the location can't be beat for convenience to the greater Camberville area. I've been renting a second floor 5"x5" at this facility for, I dunno, a few years now, and while the price keeps creeping upward, I keep gritting my teeth and paying it, because this facility continues to impress me and serve my needs very well. It's bus accessible (I've travelled with stuff by cab, then taken the bus home), has an indoor loading zone with a few indoor parking spaces (I've never had trouble getting an indoor parking space on a Sunday), it has numerous available dollies/carts (I've never had trouble finding one, either), and last I checked is accessible (though unstaffed) to 10pm, including on weekends. It's scrupulously clean, well lit (motion sensor lights turn on as you approach), and the elevator is a safe, clean, modern elevator that the dollies fit into. The staff have always been courteous, helpful, and professional. I'm pleased to give them my business. read more

This is the second time I have rented a storage unit at the Extra Space Storage on Somerville Ave in Somerville. Both times have been due to difficult transitions between apartments. I like the convenience of the location and the guy who works the desk was really friendly and helpful. The facility does feel secure and the process is smooth; almost enjoyable. My only criticism is that the elevators are small - like standard passenger elevator size - which seems illogical for a storage facility. It seems like there should be at least one freight size elevator there. Or at least, the doors on the elevator should open more widely. My other criticism is that I got a 10x10 unit and there is a beam (vertical) in it, which makes a part of the space kind of harder to use and maneuver through; I think the cost of that particular unit should have been discounted as the result. But I also didn't push the issue too hard. read more
