My favorite part is when they promise you the promotional rate for 12 months but then only give it to you for three. Also, there are rats.

I moved and decided to get out of the expensive storage facility that I was using at Assembly Row. I looked around and Extra Space Storage had the best prices online as well as was very conveniently located. The manager is incredibly helpful and super nice. When I needed an extra storage location to put some items before moving into a new apartment, he gave me a second unit near my first and their first month free plan means I was lucky enough to use the facility for only the admin fees for a few weeks. Great facility, super friendly and helpful staff, and solid location. read more

PRO: I toured this space and no one shouted at me. (See my review of the Somerville Ave ESS if you prefer being shouted at.) CON: Not much to recommend ESS McGrath in the positive. And you know, it's a pity, because I wanted to like this space. The location is pretty good; the listed prices are decent for the area; and I once rented from ESS on that other coast and had an unproblematic experience. So I was all set to see the unit and go forth... ...until the world's weirdest tour. It was more like an anti-tour. From the get-go, it seemed like the manager was somewhere between "being laudably but unusually upfront" and "actively trying to scare me off." Some things I learned include: It's a "vintage" facility (I had to ask what, exactly, that meant). There are mice. The walls are not metal. People can break in through the 12" gap at the top, or just smash the door down if they feel like it. If anyone lights a cigarette anywhere in the building, ALL the sprinklers will go off and I will have water damage. DOOM, DOOM, DOOM-- --oh. Extra Space Storage will offer me their own insurance. You don't say. (And of course both ESS Somerville locations do that predatory rate increase thing, which means that wealthy folks between condos end up paying something closer to the listed rate online whereas folks who need longer-term storage because they are homeless or inadequately housed get screwed.) So, ok, I've seen a space I was ready to take until all the DOOM Talk...and then the manager makes a stupid comment about how my "husband" should be doing this work instead of me. These kinds of comments irritate me in more ways than I can count, and I want this guy to feel awkward and uncomfortable for a moment, so I bluntly state that there is no such character. And in response he spends the rest of the tour telling me about how he's never wanted kids and trying to chat me up by arguing about local real estate markets. I typically don't give free advice in either psychology or real estate, so I'm stuck trying to be polite while also wondering why we're still talking and whether I can leave yet. I should really get over that ingrained programming that says I have to be polite. read more

Luis at the East Somerville location was very responsive and helpful throughout the process as we needed storage for a large amount of furniture and materials. The storage units themselves are clean, neat, and accessible, and you can't beat the location. However, I had a NIGHTMARE attempting to close my contract with this location. They "lost" my cancellation, even after I cleaned out the unit, charged me three months of rent after my close date, refused to rectify this, and then hung up on me. The Extra Space Storage facility is located underground, and the units I looked at had evidence of existing water damage. The manager on duty, Thyago, was one of the rudest people I've ever met. I'd rather set money on fire than give it to this company. In contrast, Planet Storage, which is right next door, is 1) above ground, and 2) has a really pleasant manager, who was helpful and courteous and 3) the units seal off from each other. Don't leave your stuff here unless you wrap it all in plastic and keep it off the floor. Water damage is inevitable. read more

I stored about a room's worth of items for almost a year in a 5'x8' unit. The staff are super friendly and do their job well. They always had an answer to my questions, as well. The facilities were clean, indoor and temperature controlled. When I went to get my stuff to move out, the staff person on duty was cleaning and waxing the floors. That to me was a sign that they really take care of the building and the units. The Extra Space Storage website also made managing my account easy. I set up an automatic payment and never really had to worry about it. And when I moved out, it couldn't have been easier. I'd highly recommend using this facility if you're looking to store your stuff. read more

Extremely rude treatment. Was given a price online and had a reservation. When i got there, the price jumped by 50$ a month because I was considered a "walk-in" When I questioned this policy, the manager Tiago was extremely rude. False advertising, would never do business with them, ever. I took my business to planet storage next door. read more

This place was wonderful! The rates were highly competitive (with a discount the first month), and the staff was nice. There were always hand carts available for moving boxes. (And handcarts are often WAYYY more useful than dollys) Location wise, this place is pretty convenient as well. I moved my stuff from Harvard Square, and Cambridge street is pretty dead during non-peak hours so it was a quick drive over. At first I thought the neighborhood was a little sketchy, but now I live nearby and realize it's actually incredibly friendly. I've never felt unsafe walking around at night, and it's located in the Twin City Plaza which is a popular shopping center even in the later hours. In addition, having never used a storage facility myself, I didn't realize that I would be charged if I didn't explicitly tell them that I'd moved out. When I noticed the charge two days after I'd vacated my space, I called the manager. He was super understanding and cancelled the charge after confirming that I'd left the space on time. As a recent graduate short on cash, I was incredibly grateful! This placed rocked! read more

I have been using this space for 3 years. I am there almost on a weekly basis to pick up/drop off boxes from our offices. The employees at this location are attentive and so helpful. They go above and beyond the call of duty (holding doors open for you...offering to help if there are no clients in etc). They just make things easy and always with a smile - the place is very clean and works perfectly for storing the extra stuff that doesn't fit in our current space. a great convenient storage space right inbetween cambridge and somerville. after checking out the uhaul storage options first and was totally disgusted by the sketchyness/ghettoness, i came to extra space storage. not only is it $83/month for a 10'x8' space, but the inside is clean and large. they have security cameras throughout the building to make sure no funny business is going on! which is a great perk. you can also use the dollys free of charge. no need to buy your own! you just unload, pop your pin in and one of 3 garages open up, where the dollys are waiting for you. the manager is SUPER nice and smart, not an idiot, unlike many storage places i have encountered. i didn't feel like if i took a wrong turn i would get raped. he was very customer service oriented and it was really appreciated. if you want to rent a space, do it asap because the rates are going up soon. when college lets out, the whole place fills up. read more

This location has a very disgruntled employee who actually yells at customers. I accidentally left door open and he screamed at me to close. Kindness goes a long way when dealing with "customers". I actually feel unsafe around him. I will be finding another storage facility that provides a safer environment and VALUES their customers!!! read more

Avoid - unless you want to clean dead roaches and get greeted by dead mice. This is a great location, and staff are friendly and helpful. However, it has pest and vermin issues... It's a public storage space so some minor issues are expected, but two years ago I picked up a dead mice from my storage unit floor. Unless you want to get exposed to dead vermin resting between your belongings I recommend you look elsewhere. I also found several dead roaches in some my boxes after bringing back my belongings. If you do end up storing your items there I recommend checking for pests to minimize risks of infesting your own place. read more

I got one of the "first month free" offers and, ended up using the unit for just over a month and a half. That said, this was the cheapest I could have possible rented the amount of space I need for. Also the woman who I dealt was fantastic. She contacted me directly before I moved into the unit and worked with me in the most positive manner to prorate the second month when I moved out mid-month. The way the unites are framed out is not perfect, but it perfectly suitable for storage. read more

These guys went above and beyond. I was going to use a competitor, but they closed earlier than their website listed and when I called they said: "sorry we can't help you" (I have a moving van and boxes I needed to move that day!!) Not the case with extra storage - Chris the assistant store manager was amazing - completely kind and professional. He was courteous, very efficient, and actually stayed when they were closed to make sure I was signed up, situated, and moved in. Only downside? I got a call today saying that the unit I was shown / given was a mistake - and that I in fact need to move my stuff to another one???? Um. Avoid this place at all costs. They had a flood on July 10, and didn't notify customers via email until July 14. And the notification never really acknowledged they had a flood. It said that there had been a flash flood watch, and that the police headquarters had flooded, and we should check our units and remove wet items by July 19, or they would do it for us. I received a letter with the same text on July 22 (um, that's three days after the 19th!). If there was a no star rating, I'd give it to them. They raise their rates regularly, but when it comes to really helping you protect your belongings, they're not there for you. Avoid at all costs. It now smells like a moldy mess. read more

I would have given 14 McGrath Hwy Extra Space a 5 star until last week. I moved to this Extra Space in April after 13 yrs of a good experience at another one. Got a good price off of the internet and great service. Old manager is now gone. Just got a notice that my rate is going up by 40% after 4 months! Watch out! "We're busy now. Have a higher demand so can raise prices." Yes, but you don't do it by 40% and don't jerk around loyal customers. Have referred people to other facilities of theirs and none of us have gotten these sudden, large increases. Their District Team Leader thinks this is totally okay so you are forewarned. read more

I have worked with storage facilities in the past, both in Somerville and elsewhere. I would highly recommend this business to anyone who has a need for safe, secure storage, at a reasonable price. I have looked at other facities, ant they were either dirty, musty, had few hours, or were too expensive. Extra Space Storage met my needs because the cost is reasonable and it is open, or available, ant all hours. Sometimes, there is a special deal, which lowers the price (always useful!). The clerk I signed up with, Thyago, was very helpful, and quite charming. He very well knew what he was doing, working efficiently and with good humor. I highly recommend. read more

The best thing about Extra Space Storage on McGrath Hwy is Thanya! She's the office manager working most days during normal business hours. I was moving by myself--not fun--but she made the whole experience better. Thanya helped me pick a unit, get a lock, explained the door codes, and made me laugh all at the same time! Moving stuff around is generally a drag, but I actually look forward to it now because I get to see Thanya. I know that sounds silly, but it's true. I mean, if you have to put stuff in storage anyway, why not pick a place with nice, friendly people working there? Other advice: if you're using a GPS to find this location, use an address on Medford Street (like #10) instead of the address listed (14 McGrath Hwy), because the entrance to Extra Space is on the other side of the mall from where the GPS will take you. Also, a taxi will not find you if you give them the McGrath address. read more
