Eyes Plus does it again! We scheduled an appointment for the littles because our eldest starts preschool in August! Our toddler is very smart -- but she's also very shy. Dr Teal was so patient during her exam and adapted to her communication style by simplifying directions. It was a relief to know she didn't inherit my bad eyes and that she's on track for a child her age. My daughter's favorite part of the appointment was getting to look inside the treasure box post exam! There's so many things for the littles to choose from. The front desk is also a standout. Everyone is so personable and friendly. They make it a point to address everyone by name, which is quite impressive! This is such a positive and uplifting environment. The appointment + wait time took 45min for a follow up dilation for me, and an initial exam for my 3yr old and my 10mo old. Eyes Plus is a godsend. I've never thought I needed glasses until mid June, when I began to experience constant migraines. My PCP recommended I make an appointment to get my eyes checked. My husband's family eye doctor is Dr. Makini here at eyes plus, and so I came in. He and his staffs attention to detail before, during, and after my exam, helped me to have a clear understanding of why I could be experiencing headaches. He also went into detail about children's connection with ADHD and possible eye issues and how many doctors misdiagnose children. The coolest part was also that he uses VR technology to test your eyesight. Not gonna lie that was pretty fun lol After my exam, I learned that I was farsighted and needed glasses. His daughter and assistant Alexis, was so helpful in assisting me with finding lenses that match my style, comfort, and insurance budget. She fully explained the out of pocket cost and was transparent with me from the start. As someone that is new to eye care, Eyes Plus provided patient and compassionate service along with education. I appreciate the wide range of products they had available, and they didn't just tell me what was happening to my eyes, but they showed me with advanced imaging. The doctors there are great and they were able to make sure I was taken care of with my eyes having worsening focus. On top of that they gave me a prescription that helped me from pain that I was having in my eyes due to an infection. Pricing was pretty good and they even take a referral from the VA so veterans with medical insurance with the VA can get an appointment once they get authorization from the VA. read more

I have been going to the eye dr for over 3 decades and this is the first time I had an all over GREAT experience. It was my first time to visit Eyes Plus today. Everyone is so nice. Their diagnostic systems are high tech and all the tests I did were explained to me, in depth, by Dr. Makini. I got to go eye glass shopping and they had so many styles and high end brands for relatively great prices. The store is pretty impressive. The frames I would normally get, including all the special things like scratch resistance, glare and blue light protection always had me paying close to $700 (I have really thick lenses) but the frames AND my contact and glasses exam were way less than that! By 57% to be exact. The explanation of the difference between the 3 eye types was truly ...pun coming ... "eye opening". I'm recommending EVERYONE to come here! Including your keiki! If they're having trouble in school, it could be because they're far sighted and have issues with having a laptop in front of their face all day or something else...but this is a great place to start because I know I get frustrated when I can't see what I'm looking at the way it needs to be seen. I am so happy I found a good optometrist. Everyone is so welcoming and kind. The first time I brought my keiki to Eyes Plus (which wasn't their first eye exam, though it was their first time at EP) Dr. Makini was so informative. I appreciated that he spoke directly to my keiki and made sure they understood what was happening, as they were the patient having the exam done. Most doctors will look at me and talk to me instead of my children. I was so thankful that Dr. Makini focused his attention on them and made sure they were comfortable during the exams, especially when he saw my son was leaning a little forward when he was looking through the machine, Dr. Makini kindly adjusted the machine to make sure my son was sitting comfortably and not having to lean forward. He always communicated and didn't say things like "you need to let me know", instead he took it upon himself to ensure both my children were comfortable during their exams and would ask "is that better? Dr. Hank even came out to assist with to my unusual facial structure that it took a while to adjust my new glasses. Diminished care. Sadly I feel like quality of care has diminished and new staff is not up to par with what I experienced the first time I came to Eyes Plus. One staff member in particular got visibly insulted or had some sort of breakdown simply because I didn't choose any of the glasses she picked out. I didn't ask her to pick them out, she just did it, and I simply didn't like any of them and went with another pair, am I wrong for that? Had she never been taught about patient rights? I don't know her name but she wore horizontal stripes for Halloween one year and they were extremely unflattering. I can spot a bad apple from a mile away and she will definitely be an issue in the future and affect quality of care and patient ratings if a small thing like this is what sets her off. Another thing, all patients have a right to a second opinion. It doesn't mean they think less of you as a doctor. If I go to my PCP and she notices my eyes are very red and haven't improved with your recommendations and she tells me to stop the medication to see if there's improvement instead of take more or switch to a new medication (as was recommended by EP), that shouldn't make you feel like your credentials are being attacked. At the end of the day what should really matter is that the patient's eyes are healthy. The situation is just a new data point that will help influence future decisions. For now my family will stop going to Eyes Plus quality of care has diminished. It's sad because I was almost going to recommend EP to several others who just left their other eye care providers and needed good doctors, though now I'm not sure EP would be able to handle their more complex cases especially since there's also been issue with patient record mix ups. read more

Eyes plus is terrible. I spent $600+ to get a prescription eye glasses. The glasses broke in less than 6 months and the screw kept falling out, I returned and in a week they said that they had fixed it. I got my glasses back and within 2 weeks the same problem. I then asked for a copy of my prescription and they lied to me about not having it because it was over 1 year and couldn't access it. Then told me I needed a new eye exam to get a new prescription. I request a copy of my medical documents which they have to give and BAM!there's the copy of my prescription on the medical forms that I had asked for. They want as much money as they can get out of you. Garbage. Staff is terrible and unfriendly. read more

I had a blast looking at the wide selection of beautiful eyeglass frames for women. After forty-five minutes of browsing, I was still not able to make a choice. During my appointment, the clerk showed me several pairs of luxury-brand frames that were highly discounted. The instant I tried on the Oakley frame, I knew that was the frame for me. First of all, the fit was perfect for my larger face, and the look was glamorous! It turned out that the price was way less than I expected and a great deal! Took my son to have his annual eye examine. He has been seeing Dr. Makini for 10 years, prior to Dr. Makini, we have switched doctors a couple of times. Immediately, I noticed that Dr. Makini communicated directly with my son, even at such a young age. My son is very shy, and right away opened up to Dr. Makini. That made my heart warm as he has serious problems with his vision and had to deal with very unfortunate circumstances that would make him tear having to go to the OD. Dr. Makini first of all wanted to connect with my son, and they spoke on a personal level, which was just wonderful. After he spoke with my son, he spoke with my mister and I privately to give us the necessary info. When my son was old enough to switch from glasses to contacts, he had my son watch a video, and worked with him until he was comfortable with applying and taking it out and advised him and us on the important's of keeping it clean as well as your hands and the area. We were the last appointment, the office was closing up, but he would not budge until my son was comfortable. Basically, we stayed an hour half after closing time assuring us not to worry about the time. Dr. Makini is so through, explains himself so there is no misunderstanding. Against my better judgement I decided to stop going to the dr I was used to going to, in order to have less drive time since we moved to Ewa and I would have a shorter drive time to eyes plus in kapolei. I wish I would have just continued seeing the eye dr I've been seeing for the past 8 years. I have never had issues with my prescriptions. My eye glasses have always worked as expected once I had my prescription done. However, I had my glasses prescription done at eyes plus and took it to Sams club to order glasses. Once I received the glasses I felt like the prescription was really off and It made me really dizzy to wear them. I can not see much without glasses or contacts, but I also can not wear contacts for extended periods of time, I mostly wear glasses so obviously this was a problem. They got me in for a new appt this time with dr makini and I felt very at ease with him and like they would get it figured out. The prescription was off on both eyes so he wrote me a new one. I took the glasses back to Sams club using their warranty and had them redone. I got them back and guess what... still not the correct prescription. The left eye is good but the right is off. I made yet another recheck appt (a little over a week ago) and was due to come in tomorrow December 28. I just received a text message that they are cancelling appts through the new year and can get me in on January 8 or 9. They should be doing what they have to in order to get all of the clients in that they are rescheduling as soon as possible. Not making them wait 10 more days. I have had constant daily headaches that I was not having prior to having this mix up in prescription. I am very upset as this has been an ongoing issue for over a month now. I understand Covid cases are rising but it's a little ridiculous that if I called today to cancel my appt they would have charged me $25-$50 (per their reminder text they sent out yesterday) but yet they can not only cancel me last minute, but also won't be able to get me in for 10 days? Honestly, I feel like this place is not very professional and I will not be going here again. I will just have to suck it up and pay out of pocket to get a new exam at my old eye drs. There are many other good establishments to go to, I wouldn't recommend this one. read more

I feel like words don't describe how comfortable this place made me feel. I am someone who feels like the biggest burden for being complicated, and most of the time if things aren't perfect I will never complain. With my eyes it's a little more noticeable if something feels uncomfortable. To answer a question on how I knew the prescription was backwards. I held the glasses backwards (arms facing away) and it was clearer. Then I asked them to check the lenses and they confirmed they were backwards. I have since taken a prescription to Costco, and for the first time I have perfectly clear trifocal lenses, on the first try and for 1/3 the price. read more

Dr. Makini is very friendly and professional at the same time. He is also very knowledgeable and takes the time to explain your eye health. He is not the type of eye doctor who would just give you a prescription right away and sell you glasses. I was having some issues with my vision and he tried to rule out some other factors that might be causing it. He prescribed some eye drops for a few weeks, which resolved some of the other problem but unfortunately, my vision is really not in it's best so I was finally given a prescription for a pair of specs. His staff are very friendly as well. I'm always greeted with a smile every time I walk in and out of the clinic. The only thing I didn't like about eyes plus is they don't seem to answer their phone... ever. I initially tried to call (several times) to schedule my first appointment but I could just not get through but luckily, their clinic is just inside the neighborhood so I decided to come in and schedule my first appointment. The staff is outstanding! Very courteous and accommodating as well. Dr. Henry was my Optometrist and he was very thorough with my eye exams, followed by his brief but highly detailed explanation of each procedure. Their office also has a great selection of frames and lenses. Dr. Makini also introduced me to his expertise in Children's Opth. which I was taken aback. I finally had the chance to make an eye appointment for my stepson which he diagnosed with an eye defect from birth. Just from a single appointment changed my stepsons life forever. Dr. Makini told me that he would excel even further academically. No joke within the next school quarter, my stepson received 4 awards, Honor Roll, GLO, Good Citizenship and perfect attendance.
