I found this local tailor on Yelp. Walked over on a Saturday with a pair of pants I needed hemmed a few inches. Christina helped me - had me try the pants on, marked where they needed to be altered to and told me they would be ready in a week. I received a call 2 days later that they were ready, and it only cost $14. Quick turn-around, quality work, and great prices will have me coming back! She has now altered 2 pairs of pants for me, great service each time. They do take cash only, so be sure to grab some cash if you are like me and normally only have a debit/credit card readily available. All the positive reviews about F & G's tailoring work are well-deserved! I had the sleeves on a blazer shortened, and the work so impeccable I wouldn't have known it was previously altered. Hemmed pants came back perfect, too. Her skilled work speaks for itself. The short turnaround time was amazing and pricing is competitive. I'm not completely sold on dry cleaning, but I've only dropped off items twice. It is really not set up as your typical cleaner, and I assume items are handled by a third party plant. Personally, I prefer when cleaners are more involved and have had better results that way. For alterations, this is definitely my go-to. read more

3.5 stars. I might have just been one of the unlucky customers who had an out of the ordinary "off" experience, but... The location is about 15 minutes away from where I live which isn't ideal with a 4 month baby, but the neighborhood dry cleaner closed down. I dropped off 2 dress pants, 9 male shirts, 3 blouses, and 1 skirt (total of $53) to be dry cleaned on a Friday early afternoon. I was told they would be ready for pickup by Monday. The lady saw I was struggling with the door (since I as carrying my baby in a car seat) and opened it for me. I arrived at around 11:10am on the following Monday. She asked for my name from the back room. This time there was another lady working with her. I heard them repeating my name (I assume they were looking for my clothing). Anyhow, it turned out the 9 shirts were not ready as promised. I heard the original lady speak with someone on the phone. She came to the front counter and told me the shirts were not ready. She also exclaimed, "It's not my fault, you know? I told him by Monday! This is why I get stressed out." She was telling me this while I was waiting and trying to entertain my baby. She then asked me when I needed the shirts by (I told her my husband was going out of town and needed them by Wednesday). She replied that she was relieved I did not need them by today. Then, she asked me if I would like to pay the total $53 so everything would be ready when I came back. While I understand that things happen, I think it was really unprofessional of her to handle the situation the way she did. How about a sincere apology? While I don't believe in "The customer is always right," I also don't think venting to the customer instead of apologizing is the best solution. I explained to her that although my husband needed the shirts by Wednesday I am not able to drop everything and keep coming back so I would need a certain time by when the shirts would be ready. She did not give me a direct answer and told me she would call me by Tuesday to let me know. I reluctantly paid the $53 and left while the other lady helped opened the door for me on my way out. **UPDATE: Christina called me Tuesday morning at around 9am and let me know the rest of the shirts were ready to be picked up. When I arrived, she pointed to the changing room and said they were ready. I got them and was about to leave when she finally apologized for the inconvenience. *sigh* So in the end I did get an apology, but by that point I was really annoyed. I will still be on the hunt for another dry cleaner. read more

CHRISTINA!!!!!! Go to her!! I had a (very expensive) bridesmaids dress that I was unable to try on both during initial purchase and when it was delivered to my boyfriends home in Chicago as I live out of the country. Because I was meeting my boyfriend out in Califoria for the wedding, I was never going to have a chance to try on the dress or get it tailored. I knew I had lost some inches especially around my waist and that the dress would not fit very well. In addition I knew the dress would be too long as formal dresses are wont to be made. Though a completely abnormal request, I begged Christina to take the dress in for me without being present to try it on. I gave careful instructions (after speaking with the dress designer at length about her recommendations for sizing with my new measurements) for Christina to take an exact amount off of the entire bodice. With an A-line, I knew that the bottom portion of the dress would be much more forgiving and recommended her not to change that portion. I also gave exact instructions on how much length to take off. Christina killed it!! The dress fit like a glove, but not the sort of glove that fits too tight you can't eat dinner or dance. It was absolutely fantastic and I would feel comfortable going to her even with something as important as a wedding dress now! Thank you, Christina! read more

I needed a pair of jeans shortened and a silk blouse altered so it fit me better. Some of the better tailors out there who know the business better can anticipate the needs of the customer and tell her what needs to be done if she doesn't quite know. F & G is great, but I found it difficult to work with them to figure out what to do with my silk blouse that was oddly billowy around my upper back and made my shoulders look hunched and rounded. They asked me what I wanted to get done, and I just answered that I love this blouse, but that something looks off and I can't explain it - since there was so much extra material I thought there was a fix. I know nothing about tailoring, so I couldn't explain it. I asked them what they recommended, and they said they didn't know. They said they would do whatever I wanted, but I had to decide. So I kept the blouse and just gave them the jeans. I forgot to mention that I wanted the original hem (which I knew would have cost more). I got the jeans back with a new hem. It had been shortened to the widest part of the leg and hadn't been tapered more to match the overall original shape, so that the straight leg look now looked like wide legs. My fault, because I hadn't mentioned that and it just hadn't occurred to me to specify. The quality of the work was excellent, and the price was great. And they did give me exactly what I asked for. However I did't feel they were really willing to offer their expertise and advice. This is probably fine if you're the type of person who knows exactly what they want and can explain it in detail when they walk into a tailor. I am not that sort of person, so it's probably a bad match for me. I ended up taking my silk blouse over to Seams in Lincoln Park, who knew exactly what had to be done in an instant to get the blouse to flatter my shape more, and also charged me a pretty penny for it. I do think F&G would be great for someone who can explain exactly what they want though. read more

What can I say that hasn't already been said...this review may basically just be a retread of what others are saying, but seriously...Christina is the best. I wish I was the kind of person who could just buy a pair of pants off the rack, tear the tags off and wear them out the door. This maybe has happened, at most, five times in my life? I mean, I didn't literally walk in and walk out with different pants. What am I going to do with my old pants? I just mean, 90% of the time, I need to get my pants altered after purchasing, so I don't have the dreaded dirty fold line at the bottom of my pants. And if you have no idea what I'm talking about, consider yourself lucky. For some reason, I always end up at F & G shortly before a trip out of the country. And as per the usual, I need to get rid of some excess material at the bottom of my pants leg. She is always accommodating when I tell her that I need the pants at a certain time. My work hours are such that by the time I get home from work, most days I wouldn't be able to pick them since they close between at either 1700 or 1800pm on most weekdays. Since I don't work Fridays, I usually get them to her around noon on a Friday and she has them ready for me by Saturday around the same time. Thats not same day service necessarily, but 24 hours? That's pretty good considering she usually has work lined up for her. Whenever I walk in, she's at the sewing machine doing something great for somebody else. The bottom line? Price is reasonable, and so are the business hours. Quick, quality work. You can't ask for much more than that. Just remember to bring your paper money, as it is cash only. read more

Christina is fantastic. She is inexpensive but her work shows that and more of a tailor in the Loop who charges three times the price. I've been bringing my clothes here for three years now and she is always friendly, and I've never had a bad experience. My clothes fit perfectly - from adding darts to my dress shirts, to taking the sides in, to fixing a hole in the elbow, to completely tailoring my jeans, everything I have taken now fits me perfectly. Christina at F & G is spectacular. Outside of the fact that she herself is an extremely pleasant woman, her work is top notch and her prices are phenomenal. My last visit was this past Friday at approximately 4:45. She moved since the last time I was there (one building East of her previous location), and the new place is clean, warm and inviting (I can swear there was some Enya playing over the speakers). I dropped off four pairs of pants for some taking out and hem work and paid less than 50 bucks! To top that off, even though I dropped them off and was measured fifteen minutes to close on a Friday afternoon and she estimated that they would be ready by Tuesday 5:00 PM, she promised to try and have them sooner...........and did!!! I picked them up this morning and everything was as it should be. No complaints whatsoever, and will definitely continue taking my clothes to Christina at F & G whenever I need some tailoring done. read more

I've had several items tailored here (one dress and several suit jackets and blouses) and Christina has consistently done an excellent job at a good price. I took three pairs of pants and a dress here, all for shortened hems. Two of the pants had cuffs, one didn't. The dress needed to retain its original hem (different pattern) and had a lining. The dress and the two pants with cuffs came out just OKAY, not good enough that I'd go back, but decent enough that I don't have to take it someplace else to get it re-done. The hem appears to be even all around. It's neat and un-noticeable from the outside. But one leg of one cuff on one of the pants doesn't sit flat. The cuff is sewed up the sides of the leg and it's like the cuff is just a bit narrower and the inside pants part a little bit wider - not a lot but enough to be noticeable and irk me. The other pants was awful. It was 1) cut with a zigzag edge, 2) folded over ONCE, 3) sewed. The sew looks like it was done on a 19th century machine. Not neat AT ALL. I mean, big loops and small loops and uneven. It was ugly. I had to take it somewhere else to get it re-done. Oh yeah, one of the pants needed to be cleaned and it came back not clean all the way. read more

I saw that the place had such positive reviews that I wanted to give it a chance as well. The lady was initially on the phone but got off as I dropped off my dress, pants, and a shirt. I got a yellow slip for $14 and agreed that I could come and pick my items up the following week. I didn't check the hours, but I came on a Monday before 6pm and they were actually closed. I saw that one of the few other days they were open until 6 on the weekdays was Tuesday, so I made it a point to bring my ticket with me so that I could pick my stuff after work. I got in and she quickly found my clothes, and she let me know when I could bring my bridesmaid dress for alterations so that I could have it when I needed it. I came home to do a double check on all the stains that were on there, and they were gone. I'm very happy with the results - if only I could manage to be less of a messy person! read more

Kristina is so nice and does great work! She's like the grandma I never had. She did an excellent job stitching the frayed fingertips of my favorite pair of gloves back together - much better than any other tailor in Chicago so far.
