My daughter and I had a quick and delicious lunch in here the other day. Fyi they have a terriyaki chicken lunch special for $5 but we didnt get that. ( that comes with rice and yummy salad). We ordered: miso soup, cucumber salad, inari, Philadelphia roll ( my kid will eat that because it always has smoked fish) sake nigiri, and unagi nigiri and a house salad. The house salad is a big bowl of fresh greens with avocado, cucumber, and a delightful citrus dressing. Everything was tasty and we cleaned our plates. Our server was a sweet young woman with red hair. She was friendly and efficient. Sometimes the man who I think is the owner is a little abrupt but I have never had problems here with food or service. In fact, this time he brought an inari to our table after we placed our order to make sure they gave us the right one as they have two kinds, an inari pocket on the nigiri menu and a more complicated roll. We wanted the pocket. I thought that was awesome he double checked first. So, Is it the best sushi we have ever eaten? No. But its got good food,a clean restaurant, reasonable prices, and a pleasant all round experience. The only tricky bit was the parking, but we parked down the street and it was ok. Great little sushi place, always tastes really fresh. Friendly service and the food is so yummy. Its a small place and given it's pretty much the only real sushi restaurant in town it can get busy during peak dining hours so it's good to keep that in mind. Decor is simple, dim lighting, cozy and kind of izakaya style. Their black pepper tuna is so good and my husband and I love all of their rolls. They have ramen, but I haven't tried it yet. This is a really cute sushi place in Forest Grove! The interior reminded me a little bit of a coffee place instead of a Japanese restaurant...a couple of comfy chairs with table in the middle of the restaurant, the color scheme. Japanese lanterns and hiragana letters adorn the outside of the building My daughter and her dad really rave about this place so I decided it was about time I tried it out. I had stopped at the Forest Grove library prior to dinner. I had a book to read, so didn't mind dining by myself. Good thing I had the book, because I was hungry, and the restaurant was starting to get busy. I waited about 20 minutes before I was able to place my order. I decided by the 30 minute mark, and I was going to leave. I'm glad that I didn't have to leave. Another couple came in after I did, and they ended up leaving. A waiter went out to talk to the couple, but I guess they still decided to leave. I ordered the California rolls and 2 orders of the potsticker, everything tasted fresh. That was $10.50. For the same price, you can get a combinatiion box that includes main dish, such as teriyaki chicken, spicy pork, orance chicken, saimen, with rice, salad, egg roll, potsticker. I hate to reduce a rating. The food remains fantastic, and the prices pretty fair, but the service is becoming a joke. It can take as long as 10 minutes to be seated when the restaurant is as little as half-full, and when ordering take-out, the staff can be straight-up rude. Still, the sushi is fresh and tasty, and I'll keep coming back. I'll still recommend it, but make sure you're ready to fight for your food. read more

I have always just ordered the lunch specials. They are always a great value and very delicious! My new fave is their teriyaki lunch special, it's only $6!! It comes with a salad, a very generous portion of rice, and a SUPER generous portion of teriyaki chicken! On top of that, it's all super tasty and delicious! The teriyaki sauce is perfect and the chicken is grilled to perfection with some chard pieces (LOVE!). What's the catch? It's super busy during lunch time, so it's best to call in your order first and pick up later. One time I tried to order a lunch special during their lunch rush and they said it would take over 40mins!! If you are going to dine in, it's best to get there early before the lunch rush. First time into FG Sushi today and it did not disappoint. My son enjoyed a dragon roll and I had a Chicken teriyaki combo. Chicken was perfectly charred and all the other components were super tasty. Arguably the most disorganized restaurant i've ever been. The owner treat his help poorly (probably all local college kids). He barks unclear instructions and is the source of confusion at the counter. I would not eat their sushi but their hot food is great. That's why I came back for the second time to watch the circus. 3.5 stars. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was a female sushi chef! I have honestly never seen that. Most chefs don't teach women how to make sushi, but it is becoming more and more accepted. We ARE in 2010 here. The miso soup is some of the best, most flavorful I've ever had. I almost picked the bowl up and licked it clean. But uhhh, I wasn't alone. I don't like their use of SMOKED salmon. Perhaps it keeps longer and is cheaper, but I prefer fresh salmon, especially on my philadelphia roll. The gyoza sauce was very good. Okay, I have to admit. I came here with a bias and a prejudice. Four years ago, my sushi-loving brother and I swung through. I'd never eaten here before and figured, why drive to Beaverton when we might just have really good sushi out here in my neck o' the woods. We opted for an order of Salmon and Tuna Nigiri. It came out tiny, perhaps two inches long, and the tuna was sliced so thinly you could see rice through it. Wasn't good. So we decided we'd not be coming back. Fast forward four years to tonight. 7:00pm, arrived with Wife N. for dinner. "Gee, the reviews on Yelp look promising---maybe the food will be better." To be honest, I really wasn't expecting much, but wanted to keep an open mind. We started with the test: an order each of the Salmon and Tuna. They arrived and I could tell right off, this was going to be MUCH better. Size was as expected. Salmon, which included some nice fat lines (almost salmon-toro) was cured nicely and had good flavor. The Maguro, as well, had decent flavor and good texture. For cut-to-order sushi at $3.50 an order, this was a good value. Two weeks back, I had much worse for $5 somewhere else. Okay, that was a nice surprise. Wonder how the dinner will be. I ordered a beef bento box, and Wife N. ordered the sweet chicken bento (I believe $8.50 each). Each bento comes with a choice of sides (potstickers, spring rolls, or tempura shrimp). I took the spring rolls, wife ordered the shrimp. The boxes came and had quite a plentiful amount of food for the money. Wife's bento included 4 large tempura shrimp. Both had good presentation, and came with a salad that had a lovely curry/citrus dressing (normally one expects ginger/sesame, but this was a nice twist). All food was flavorful, cooked nicely--zero complaints and again, nice surprise against our expectations. I also ordered a bowl of their spicy ramen. On the whole, this was my only disappointment. Now I need to say up front: I have never once ordered ramen in a restaurant, though it's been on my list of things to try for a while. So I don't really have a good frame of reference for what "restaurant ramen" is really supposed to taste like. It came and while it was reasonably good, a thought immediately came to mind. This tastes almost identical to the packaged "Shin Ramyun" (Korean spicy ramen) I make at home. There were a few more veggies (green onions, mushrooms, etc.) thrown in, but this recipe was strikingly similar. For $7.50, it was worth the try, but given the similarities, I think I'll make it at home from now on. The place seats maybe 20 or so, with a more private room that seats maybe eight. On the whole--honestly the meal was great. We're adding FG Sushi to the list of places we'll be back to. The Bento's were very good, and the sushi, for the $3.50 an order, was better than expected. They have dramatically improved their food over the past four years and I'm glad I returned. read more

Whoa. Serious sushi spot. Heard about how good the sushi here was since new ownership took over and it really is dang delicious. The salmon rolls were exploding with flavor in each bite and the quality of the fish here is high-grade. You can seriously taste the difference after trying this supreme sushi compared to other sushi places. I'm a huge eel fan and they make awesome eel rolls. The thing that blew me away were the prices and how inexpensive the menu was. For this high quality of sushi for that low of a price range is a major win. Being in a college town, students will take the BIG W here. Their teriyaki chicken is big time and makes an excellent superset to order alongside the sushi. I went to F.G. Sushi yesterday with my wife and two daughters. We arrived at about 1pm on Saturday and the place was busy. There was only one free table that we were immediately sat down at. The place was clean and bright, albeit small, with two rows of tables, one with three tables and one row with four. Along one wall is a 8' tall case holding a variety of sake. We ordered a variety of platters and enjoyed our sodas, green tea and plumb tea while we waited. The teas were excellent with my wife deciding that the plumb tea was great, even earning approval from our 6 year old. My wife complimented the host on the plumb tea and we were informed that the family makes the tea from plumbs they pick and brew themselves. As a result of the compliment, my wife was given a second cup for free. My youngest ordered the Chicken Yakisoba binto , I had the Beef Teriyaki binto, the wife had Chicken Teriyaki binto and the eldest ordered the Tempura plate. We also ordered a plate of smoked salmon rolls with salmon and shrimp sushi. The wife added two pieces of red snapper sushi. I had read earlier reviews (in the local paper from a few years back) that said there were no printed menus, thankfully this has changed. The current format is uncluttered and very well laid out. The host was very friendly and attentive even during a busy lunch rush. I may be a sushi neophyte, but this is a very good restaurant with great food. We all agreed that this was awesome food, and luckily for us, is only two blocks from our front door. read more

I really hate to give bad ratings and after hearing coworkers telling me this place has the best sushi in Forest Grove. So I wanted to give it a shot. I love going to small shops, however this wasn't the experience I thought I would have. Don't get me wrong, our server was great but the sushi chef was a different story. I've worked in a Japanese restaurant before (for 7 years) while working towards my undergrad, therefore I know when sushi's are fresh and can tell the difference between real tuna & imitation tuna. A really great sushi chef would take his time in wanting to make really good sushi's and I felt like the chef didn't want to. It was as if he was in a rush to get us out. This is a darn good sushi joint in little old Forest Grove. They are a small joint so it can get packed at prime times, and the tables are really close together so you almost feel as if your dining with your neighbor to the point you might just want to join in on their conversations. They do take out, which is great but it can get backed up and I've learned to expect this on a Friday or Saturday night. It goes a long way when they have great customer service (which they do) and the waiters/waitresses give you a heads up when their backed up! Food is delish. Get the mushroom boomb appetizer, it's worth it! The salad that they serve has a citrus-y dressing that is amazing. Miso is so so according to my honey so save room for the other stuff! Teriyaki chicken is yummy, good quality meat, all the different sushi rolls we've tried did not disappoint. Prices are reasonable. One thing to advise (as this is a small family business) they are sometimes closed during regular business hours but they do update all of that on their FB page. read more

I've been going to FG Sushi for years. My son really likes the chicken teriyaki and orange chicken. We usually end up getting one of those as a bento with shrimp tempura (be sure to ask for the tempura sauce). Their California rolls are excellent as is their unagi nigiri (eel). It's family run and it's great calling the owner and he immediately happily says "Hi Mr. Jeff!" I always order the food to go and it's always fantastic and on time. The restaurant is clean and usually pretty full with happy families. I don't think you can go wrong there! Great food, great prices, great people! read more

It's my first time here. I ordered 2 sushi rolls to go at 11:30am. I was dying of hunger, so anything should taste really good. but i was still disappointed. Rice was so dry and hard, I think they used left overs from the day before. Not impressed. I think Albertsons Cali roll would taste better. Wasabi was not good. I'm a wasabi lover, but I can't eat spicy, so normally I would put a pea size (or smaller) in my soy sauce. but their wasabi was so tasteless, I think I put 6 or 7 pea size and turned the soy sauce all milky and I still can barely taste the tangy wasabi flavor. Maybe if you come in later in the day, they'll give you fresh rice. it's so close to my office, so i'll visit again when I forgot my lunch box. staff was friendly and nice tho! read more

I have been going here for a long time, 10+ years. Every weekend they're busy, which is to be as expected. Prices have always been high, but good quality food. Lately though service has been worse and worse. The last time I went in it took 1 hour 30 minutes to get our food, and everyone else in the building who got there after us already got food and was done eating. That is unacceptable for the prices they charge. Regardless of it being a busy night or not. It's no excuse when they use it every time. Very poor service all the time now, never enough staff. I'm normally pretty happy go lucky and I enjoy hole in the wall type places but this place was a disappointment. A friend of mine had mention FG sushi and my husband and I felt like a drive and so we were off! When we got there I was happy to see it was in a quaint home looking establishment. The waiter was nice and brought us water and thus a good start. However the food was the low point of our experience. I wouldn't say that I'm an expert in making maki rolls, nigiri, or sashimi but I have dabbled enough that I know good from bad. We ordered spicy tuna rolls, a tuna roll, and I ordered tempura udon. The spicy tuna itself was not bad. It wasn't relatively flavorful and I don't believe the cucumber that accompanied it was fresh but the rice was something else. It was long grain, SWEET, and it over powered the spicy tuna. All I could taste was the sweet rice and nothing else. The rolls were cut poorly and smashed which is more a reflection on the chef's care than flavor. I've never had sushi taste so sweet with a tang as an aftertaste. Clearly too much sugar and rice vinegar were use. It should have been used as dessert sticky rice and not for making cut rolls. I might have been able to tolerate the above but then I tasted the udon and I was done. The broth was so bland I was basically eating salty tap water. There were no vegetables or nori added for depth and the bits of tempura that were in the broth were burnt. I tried to be a trooper and eat through it but I tasted the green onion and knew this also wasn't fresh. Finally I took a bite of the noodles and they were chewy and tasteless as well. Reminded me of play dough. I thought maybe the shrimp tempura that accompanied it would save me but it was fried in oil that wasn't hot enough and was too thick to enjoy the shrimp. I won't be back here and I'm sad that most who review this place find this acceptable as Japanese cuisine. Nothing against the servers as they were great but the food is just lacking. read more

Food was okay but I've had better. The service was not the best either to the point where we were only approached once where all other tables were waited on. We also didn't see anywhere on the menu how certain things were prepaid. For example, my friend is highly allergic to peanuts and whatever she ate gave her the worst reaction.
