However, once you step through the door and head down a short flight of stairs, you're welcomed into a cozy and quiet space that feels inviting and relaxed. One of the standout aspects is the speed of service--the food arrives quickly after ordering. The menu offers a wide variety of options, and the scallop nigiri is always our top choice, as both my wife and I are big fans. This place is always a treat! Service is great and the sushi is so fresh tasty. You can definitely taste the difference. This was my son's first time here and he had the best experience. We ordered a great variety starting with edamame and an Omakase 18 piece for the table. We ordered a few spicy rolls and a couple specialty rolls. The volcano is always a favorite and so beautifully constructed, it's very impressive to look at and dismantle piece by piece. We ended with an order of mochi ice-cream. (Red bean, mango and matcha) Highly recommend reservations because it can get busy. Delicious sushi. I particularly loved the Kyoto style misoyaki cod and agedashidofu. Only thing I wished was for them to rectify the broken quail egg w ikura. Should not have been served like this. Hillsboro hidden gem. Glad to see they're doing well and still around all these years. read more

It had been years since my last meal ay Syun. Truly disappointed. I ordered Tempura Soba and a spicey tuna handroll. The soba came in a small bowl.The broth was luke warm and lacked flavor.The buckwheat noodles were pastey. That's all that came in the bowl. Two tempura shrimp and one tempura onion ring arrived separately (as it should of). I asked for hot sauce and was given a nearly empty bottle of Tabasco. The hand roll was mediocre for $12. Servicer seemed disgruntled when we asked to sit outside. The restaurant is noisy. read more

I visit this place at least twice a month since my office is in Hillsboro, and it's usually been a reliable spot. On my most recent visit, though, I noticed quite a few changes--new servers, a new payment system, and even different takeout containers. The sushi chefs behind the bar are still the same, and they mentioned there hasn't been a change in ownership. Unfortunately, the food didn't seem up to its usual standard this time. The miso soup was noticeably saltier, the chicken karaage wasn't very good, and the cheesecake was disappointing. The service also felt off, likely because of the new staff still getting up to speed. I'm hoping this was just an off day, as I've had many good experiences here before. I'll give it another try, but this visit was definitely a letdown. read more

I wanted refreshing chirashi and this place had a special for lunch. I love fresh fish and this offered a variety of sashimi for my bowl! So delicious! The staff were very kind and the ambiance is casual, yet very nice for a lunch. They have a large seating area and offer bar seats in case you want to eat at the bar. This isn't as top-tier as it was 2 decades ago but still pretty good. The prices have just gotten really high here and the portions sizes are smaller than they used to be (shrinkflation). For a business meal, still a great place to go, but for date night, it isn't in our top-10 any more, but if we want sushi and don't want to drive 30+ min to get there, we still come here. read more

While I was excited to try the fresh crab California roll and shrimp tempura roll, unfortunately, I found both dishes rather underwhelming. The crab lacking in flavor, I was also hoping for more from the highway 26 and yellowtail rainbow roll; the flavors didn't quite harmonize as expected, leaving me wanting a more distinct and exciting taste profile. I understand that tastes are subjective, and I appreciate the effort put into preparing the food. However, I felt compelled to provide this constructive feedback in the hope that it might assist in improving future dishes. Fantastic ambiance and food that is elevated to match. When I want a fancier night out with elegant, delicious and inspired sushi presentation Syun Izakaya is my choice. I love this place. If it wasn't 45 minutes away from my home I would be there more often. Often stop in before or after a Hops game when I go to Hillsboro. My fave is the Hokkaido bowl. But the nigiri and the rolls are all fantastic. Whenever my brother is here from CA to visit it is his go to choice. Love their wine and beer options too. 10 out of 10 recommend!!! Still excellent! Their menu is shorter but the fish still fresh, and I'm still in love with the Hokkaido chirashi (except for the small raw crab still in its shell--I finally asked them to leave it out and didn't get a stink eye, to my relief). Great intimate ambiance. read more

We decided to give this place a try for my husband's birthday. You see, my daughter and husband both love sushi, and I do not. So we were looking for a place where they could get some amazing sushi and I could have an equally good meal. This definitely hit the spot. We started with the Karaage chicken, which was moist and perfectly fried. Then we moved on to the Tempura. We absolutely loved the shrimp and some of the vegetables. The tempura was light and crispy, just as you would expect. I think next time I would just get the shrimp. For my main dish I got the Yakiudon which has beef and vegetables and it was absolute perfection. It was better than I wanted it to be, like I would come back just for this dish. It was flavorful, served piping hot, and had the perfect ratio of meat to veggie to noodle. My daughter and husband both loved their sushi rolls - the Double Crunchy roll and Salmon avocado hand rolls. They also had some nigiri that they loved. We did try the fried ice cream and mango creme brûlée for dessert, which I would skip next time. They were both incredibly underwhelming. We will however, be back for dinner again soon. read more

Another table of customers can be overheard speaking not so nice things about the staff and wait especially when it's not busy (apparently repeat customers). I've ascertained that this was just rude commentary as it was easy to get the staff's attention if they needed any anything. Wide selection menu and beverages option. Happy hour was available although, I cannot recall at the moment. Specials are clearly listed by the chef area. Service time was quick from order to food delivery. Parking is street parking. Amazing sushi . Very fresh fish and everything we had was tasty. The Albacore Tuna tar tar was fantastic. Reminded us of Albacore Poke. Very fresh, perfectly seasoned, the soy sauce put it over the top. Will defiantly get again next time. The Volcano was amazing. Don't remember all that was in it- but the heat level was just Sriracha mayo level. So good. I loved the Philly- a basic tuna roll with cream cheese. The mango tango was good- but compared to the others was probably our least favorite. Still good and no complaints- the Volcano was just over the top. Can't wait to go back and try some more! Just had the worst service experience of my life while dining here. Main server disappeared for the entire meal, multiple other servers tried to cover the table but none of them seemed to coordinate with each other so i was brought a check multiple times, and wasn't served the correct items. The worst was a nigiri order being sent to the table packaged to go even though it wasn't ordered to-go, and then instead of making the item new again for us, they just tried to dump out the to go packaging on a plate and call it good. Given the legendary status of this restaurant in Hillsboro, really sad to have such a poor service experience. read more

We been to Syun Izakaya before and was left disappointed due to long wait times and full reservation. It was totally unexpected when we checked in for an unplanned dinner last night and got it in under an hour. Just loved the ambience and food. We tried 3 sushi's (volcano, ring of fire and real crab), Sashimi platter and yakiudon (stir fried beef noodle). Everything was top notch. Strawberry parfait as well as fried tempura ice cream were good as well. Absolutely loved the place. Will be back again for sure read more

Disappointed. I ordered scallops and I received 4, and a few tomato slices for $19. Rice costs extra, and that was an ice cream scoop size that we my wife and I tried to share. Salad costs extra. Apparently ice costs extra too, as we received luke warm glasses of tap water. Waiter was friendly, but never returned after delivering our meals. The Salmon tasted great and so did the scallops, but we will not return. Main courses should include everything, not ALA Carte. What does the rice cost, 5 cents? Free tea would go a long way too. We dined on Friday afternoon at 4. I counted at least 6 employees and four diners, so there is no excuse for ignoring customers. Generally love their food but I'm fairly sure what they call yakiniku is actually gyudon , basically just onions and thinly sliced beef. Yakiniku is usually a cook-it-yourself with usually raw beef and an assortment of veggies, all of which the diners cook over some sort of brazier. read more

Was craving sushi while in the area and decided to check this izakaya out. We were greeted and seated quickly; the restaurant had the inspiration of a Japanese pub. They have quite a bit on the menu and decided to try the chicken karaage and agadashi tofu as an appetizer with the ring of fire roll and super deluxe sushi plate as our entrees. The presentation was great and tasted amazing. The fish was very fresh. We decided to end our meal with the fatty tuna nigiri and oh my goodness, it melted in our mouths; it was so good and flavorful. I don't want to gatekeep this restaurant as this place very much deserves your business if you're in the Hillsboro area! read more

Can't believe I didn't know about this place for so long but now I'll sure be a regular! Situated in downtown Hillsboro, Syun is a quaint izakaya with plenty of seatings indoor and outdoor (weather permitting). They do get pretty busy though so reservation is recommended. Their menu is diverse, offering classics izakaya items as well as more adventurous and creative rolls. Everything we got was delicious! You can taste the quality and freshness in their fish. We primarily had their tuna and it's some of the best I've had in the city. Their Boston Bay roll came with tasty sauce and had a great crunchy texture from the softshell crab. Similarly, the Volcano Roll was a flavor and texture explosion with fresh scallops and tempura. Even their simple Spicy Tuna roll was a treat. Besides the rolls, we also got the Grilled Scallops, Yu Tofu, and Yakisoba. Special shoutout to the yakisoba. The sauce was very flavorful and the wok-char game was strong. It also came with lots of seafood. Eventhough they're busy, service was prompt and attentive. Totally will be back to try more of their amazing menu!! read more

Irasshaimase! This restaurant is gorgeous, inside and out, and presented us with the challenge of choosing between the two: we opted for the patio, as it was a warm and sunny June evening. Our next challenge followed swiftly on the heels of the first: the menu is not only extensive, but packed with enticing entrées and alluring appetizers. While we poured over the available options, we munched on some complimentary edamame, and eventually settled on a bowl of miso soup each (one asari and one nameko), okonomiyaki with beef, yakiudon, and the Rock'n Roll (eel, avocado & smoked salmon). Itadakimasu! We went a little overboard; neither of us realized how large the portions would be, and a sizeable amount of our meal came back home with us (oh no! Heaven forbid!), meaning we were well-fed and content twice in 24 hours! Each of the miso soups were just a tinge too weak for my personal taste, but as my wife disagrees on that particular point, I know that I'm in the wrong on this one. Everything else, however, was absolutely incredible: the perfectly prepared, chewy gooey okonomiyaki with Japanese mayo, ginger, tobiko and beef marinated in a savory sauce was an instant hit on both sides of the table. The yakiudon was a hearty bowl full of lightly-fried noodles, tasty cuts of beef (ostensibly prepared the same way as it was for the okonomiyaki), cabbage and carrot, and somehow not as heavy of a meal as you might think. Lastly, the Rock'n Roll was equal parts buttery (as good eel tends to be), sweet and savory, unified by the avocado and my wife's custom modification of adding some cream cheese. Our servers were competent, and friendly enough, although slightly awkward at times, but everything was executed swiftly and attentively, from start to finish. And as mentioned before, the interior of the restaurant is cozy and inviting, and I long for a return here simply to bask in its atmosphere: it truly feels like the kind of family-run izakaya you'd find inside a converted house at the end of a bamboo-lined side street in Kyoto, and I'm all about that. We've been mourning the spirit-death of our last favorite Japanese restaurant, that sadly ruined their own reputation of excellence with a disastrous menu reconfiguration, and some truly baffling table management practices. Hopefully, Syun Izakaya will not follow in their footsteps, because I think we've found our new favorite Japanese restaurant in the Portland metro area, and I don't think I could deal with the grief of losing another.
