I noticed a full bar. YES. Wine please. Unfortunately, someone in the kitchen placed the red wine I wanted in the refrigerator. D'oh! Cold red wine. They were very apologetic about it and comped it. You get an extra star there. They arrive. The feminine scrutiny of the menu commences. I don't know about you but they were trying to pair food with food in a family style kinda of way, but in a diner restaurant setting. OK, whatever floats your boat. One milkshake and four straws. One cocktail and three straws Each of them have their entrees but each entree was cut up and meant for sharing. Gnocci, poutine, grilled cheese sandwich, soup, fried chicken sandwich. P.s. Guys don't do this with each other. I didn't share my food, but I ate theirs. All in all, they liked their food. I liked their food too. I had my wine and also a fried chicken sandwich. Slightly spicy but good. If I had one comment, it would be that I would have liked the chicken to be one whole piece instead of the three that kept falling out on each bite. Since I was in the company of the fairer gender, I ordered salad with my meal instead of fries. You know, kinda like going to the Arches and getting the supersized meal and downing everything with a diet coke that was also super sized? We were just out walking around Mt Pleasant and got hungry, so we walked past this diner. Glad we stopped in. I had a Beyond burger with cheddar, and my partner had the Huevos Rancheros which he was v happy with. My burger was delicious. Fries were good. Price was right. I'd definitely eat here again. We walked in on a very rainy day, and asked for a table for 5, there was a table available for 4, and we were certain it would fit us, so we said said we would appreciate them fitting us 5 in the booth. The host still said, no and just said that the wait was going to be an hr and 45 mins, but we thought to ourselves, that probably way not the case (more like 45 mins wait). We ended up going to Sing Sing (great place btw), legit, 30-40 mins later, my gf gets a call, ended up being Fable. She let them know that we had found another place, and the host just hung up. Liked the relaxed ambience and the diner seats. The breakfast menu is pretty sparse, unfortunately, and the lunch menu isn't available until 11am. I got the West Coast, which looked and tasted pretty good but wasn't a big enough portion for brunch. My friend added bacon to her Hash & Eggs, which turned out a bad idea because her plate became a pool of oil and the few pieces of bacon were not worth the $4... Hands down Fable has now become my favourite neighbourhood place to eat. I've been coming here quite a bit since being without a home and access to a kitchen. Everything I've had here has been absolutely fabulous - no complaints. I love the vibe, the staff (especially Elle) are so friendly and of course the food is beyond exceptional. I love how everything is made from scratch and bought locally. The atmosphere is casual and not loud. They do play music but it's not blaring loud. Tonight I will be having fried chicken and grits. It's so freakin good. Be warned the grits are not like the southern variety, they're better. If you love brunch, check out Fable Diner. They have decent size brunch menu with items that are interesting enough without compromising the taste for the sake of being unique. My family ordered: Eggs benedict with fried chicken, spicy ranch, gravy on top of a cheddar and scallion scone. The eggs were runny, chicken was juicy and scone was buttery. I loved the hashbrown, which was more of a potato rosti served with scallion sour cream. Heuvos Rancheros, which I've never tried before until today. It's basically eggs, refried beans, guacamole, pasilla, cilantro, pico de gallo, cheddar and sour cream sitting on top of a warm tortilla. I'm definitely having this again. Kids breakfast. I would prefer to come here early to avoid the long wait on weekends. We had Trucker breakfast, Smoked salmon Benedict, Ham and egg with extra thick bacon. All the dishes are good but not special. Delicious hipster place in the hipster Main area. Parking is available on the side streets. Their claim to fame of course is their brunch ("brunchfest") menu. The menu choices are simple, but their food delivers. I had their steak and eggs. Their steak came chopped up with their pepper and blackberry sauce. This was something special. The eggs were surprisingly not greasy. It also came wiht a hash brown square with some sort of mayo, as well as 3 slices of bread. There were also some greens on the steak. Had brunch here for the first time today. The food was OK, but the service was not great. Our drinks were late arriving, and we were almost finished with our food by the time they arrived. That's too bad b cause I would've bought another drink. The set menu for brunch is stupid, I wish they just had a regular menu like 99% of other restaurants, so you can order what you want and don't have to pay for dessert etc. that you don't want. The food is OK, but honestly it seems like they're trying too hard and overall I think this place is just way over hyped. read more

FD is an old school themed diner you'd find in a small town. OMG my favourite ol skool music was playing over the speakers! My waitress Virginia was very pleasant & provided great service. I ordered the Roast Duck Pancake with a poached egg. Now back to "I just can't stop ... " - Evelyn Champagne Kings massive classic started playing while I gorged away at my super delicious meal! Edit: Someone was nice enough to follow up and advise my contact information was "Lost". Not sure how that happen considering i emailed them a picture but whatever. The food really is great here and for the most part I've never had a problem with the customer service here. So I've amended my review to reflect my satisfaction. I order take out from these guys all the time. Have never had a problem with them or customer service. So it was surprising to say the least to find a metal paper staple in my kids French toast. I feel extremely lucky I was so attentive when cutting it up. This staple was on the underside of the French Toast and stuck right into the bread. Had I not cut it in the right way, I would have never noticed because it was so close to the thick crust. Now I did call right away and the manager that took the call seemed very apologetic and asked me to email them a picture. She assured me they would review the picture and get back to me about how they want to rectify the situation. At the very least a refund was in order. But did they email me back? Did she phone me back after carefully asking for my name and phone number? That would be a negative on both accounts. So it's safe to say I'm extremely disappointed. I did email them once more before posting any reviews to advise them I was going to do so. Do better please in communication and follow up, I understand mistakes happen in the kitchen..... but as management this lack of communication is a failure on you part imo. read more

Came here with a friend as she's never been. I advised her that it's not like the W. 4th location as this is more of a diner, hence it's name so expect more comfort food. Since she's never been, we shared a variety of dishes. We ordered the loaded french toast, hash & egg, and west coast toast. The hash and egg was rich and delicious but I found that it was a bit salty after a few bites. I don't eat a lot of salt so maybe I'm sensitive to salt. The west coast was awesome. It had smoked salmon, avocado, horseradish and pickled red onions. A good blend of flavours and seemed to taste better than other places. I'd definitely get this again. The french toast was good. It had just the right density and softness. The nutella mousse was a little sweet which is odd as I love my sweets. I was tempted to get the milkshake too, but it was enough food/items. The milkshakes are good too so I recommend getting one along with your food. You could get some alcohol too if you like, but for brunch/lunch, I'll stay with non-alcoholic drinks. :) read more

The duck was moist and seasoned well and the cilantro gave the hit of freshness to the otherwise very savoury meal. Adding an over-easy egg on top for $1 was also a great decision. Everything was just so cohesive!! West Coast Toast (3.5/5) - During brunch time you actually save $2 on it (because it's $8 instead of its usual $10). It's unfortunate that the toast was quite small so the dish wasn't exactly a substantial amount. But the flavours of the smoked salmon was delicious although the salmon was in a more crumbly form. Adding the egg for $1 is a must, the runny yolk just makes everything taste richer and creamier. Heuvos Rancheros (3/5) - The mexican flavours were all there and it looks colourful and inviting. I did a take-out order for here on a Saturday morning; they were quite busy for dine-in but my order only took 20 minutes for pick-up. Since they now have a vegan option, the Mount Pleasant vegan bowl ($16 plus tax), I figured I'd give it a shot. The bowl isn't exactly a breakfast/brunch option, even though it's not on the brunch menu (as well as the all-day) menu, but it still works. It comes with a base of cubed, fried potatoes and a wonderful assortment of vegies -- you get kale, broccolini, roasted cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, and some pickled red onion. The vegetables were really wonderful in here -- fresh and cooked to perfection. And I'm a sucker for potatoes, so I really appreciated this as the base. The dressing was tangy and nutty, with a nice miso gravy. No tofu or other protein -- that's extra -- I skipped this. The carton my food was in wasn't very well-contained, and the dressing spilled out and leaked through the paper bag -- not ideal for take-out. All in all, I was really happy with this experience. When visiting a diner, one expects a certain level of grease and retro grunge. This is not that diner. It decidedly takes the concept of it and makes it modern - especially the acquisition of their food. Farm to table as it states. I have to respect that. It's pretty cool. Food was delicious even for something as simple as a breakfast - with scrambled eggs, potato Rosti, sourdough toast, sausage patty, jam and a cup of coffee. I took the day off today for my birthday (WOOHOO) and I was in the mood to go on a solitary adventure in search of comfort food! I had an over-the-moon-LEGIT-great time at Fable Kitchen the night before for my pre-birthday dinner, so I was curious to try out Fable Diner for my real birthday! I noticed the cute inviting diner every time i passed by on the 99, and heard great things about the tomato soup and milkshakes. I thought, today sounds like the perfect excuse to give it a go! I walked in around 12pm and there was plenty of room to sit. I got a cute little booth and apparently the guest who was sitting there before me was celebrating her birthday too! I really enjoyed looking around at how the decor had some retro inspired pieces but still felt very warm and comforting modern elements (wood, warm lighting, teal accents on the booths that were easy on the eyes, "hipster" feel). I got some coffee to start and noticed that the chickpea fritters were on the menu. I fell SO HARD in love with the fritters the night before that I had to order them again! It came this time in a larger portion with heaps more of the curry mayo (BOOM, MY LUCKY DAY!). A friend joined me shortly after I finished my appetizer and we were ready to order mains. My friend got the chilli dog and a side of the soup that miraculously tasted like a CHEESY TACO but SOUP version! *insert heart eyes*. I tasted a bit of the chilli and had to get a little bit for myself! Patrick (our server) went above and beyond and offered a little taster sample size of the chilli for me. I felt so special!!! It was the perfect touch to go with my tomato soup. It might have been the BEST tomato soup I've ever had in Vancouver. (Sorry Burgoo, you lose this time). Is there a way that I can hook it up to an IV so i can continuously consume it? NOT KIDDING. It came with 2 pieces of sour-dough cheese toast. Vibrant orange color, perfect smooth consistency, beautiful garnish and just the right amount of cheesy carb-y satisfying goodness. Patrick also surprised us with the lemon meringue parfait as a special treat to share! I was so happy I had to get up and hug him! Screw the handshake! The crumbly streusel bits were so extra yummy with the lemon custard and earl grey icecream. The meringue swirl was so adorable as well! My friend and I engaged our defensive eating duel: whoever doesn't eat fast enough loses! LOL! It's that good! Overall, it was my lucky day. This place doesn't take reservations so it was a bit of a wait seeing it was a packed house. We waited about 15 minutes which isn't too bad. There was four of us and we all ordered something different. I had the Benny with fried chicken, spicy ranch, gravy, pickles onions, olive oil hollandaise. I was a bit worried it would be too heavy of a breakfast choice but, It was Actually really good and the fried chicken was really crispy and not super oily at all. There was no regrets choosing this. I also added on a potato rosti for a dollar and it was delicious. My husband had the hash and eggs Which had onions, mushrooms, cheddar, jalapeños we also added the beef brisket for 6 dollars. Unfortunately both him and I weren't fans of this dish... The beef brisket wasn't what we expected. It was kinda hard, chewy cubed... We thought it would of been soft beef pulling apart brisket. Walking into this location at the corner of Main and Broadway, there's no denying that the appearance harkens back to the diner vibe, complete with booths with old-school countertops. Back in mid-November, we dropped by for an early lunch on a pleasantly sunny Vancouver afternoon. Instead of ordering from their breakfast menu, we opted for something a bit more substantial and started off with the Fried Chicken & Grits ($16). The hominy grits that they prepare here are thick and coarse. Personally, I prefer grits that are finer and creamier in consistency. While I found the fried chicken to be just okay here, I did like the addition of the pickles that accompanied the meal. Next up was the Meatloaf Sandwich ($14) served open-faced with mushroom gravy, blue cheese butter, and crispy onions. The meatloaf really sticks to your gut but I found the sandwich was on the dry side and really needed more gravy. Overall, while it was a fairly nice looking diner, I thought the food was just okay. Decided to give this place another try! I wish I could give it 3.5 stars. The waitress (and waiter) were absolutely lovely, so I'll give it 4 solely for that reason. The waitress made a virgin version of the daily passion fruit cocktail for me which was so sweet. We had the steak and eggs, as well as the steak frites. I subbed the frites for a pancake (5$ charge, not complaining just FYI if anyone wants to do it ). The peppercorn sauce was phenomenal (tasted like onions galore, and I LOVE onions). Also subbed the potatoes for rosti (a superior hash brown with great crunch). Tried the thick bacon, tasted like ham. The pancake had a corn flavour to it. Recommendation: add maple syrup to bacon and eat with pancake; it'll take you to flavourtown. Everything was good flavour wise, but my biggest qualm was how tough my steak was. I could barely chew any of the pieces. Maybe it's because I asked for it medium-rare, and with lower cuts of meat it's a better idea to ask for it medium (how high of a cut can I really expect for a 23$ steak?), but still my jaw has never had as good of a workout. I have passed Fable Diner a million times, given its location at the busy intersection of Main and Broadway, and never been in until today. Vegetarians are in luck, as the chickpea fritter burger on offer is tasty and substantial, with overtones of curry and other fragrant spices. The fries too were quite good--not overly salty, well cooked, and made from good quality potatoes. Don't be afraid to ask for more ketchup, as they were a bit skimpy with the tiny plastic cupful provided, and the burger can be a bit dry without the condiments. The milkshakes at a neighboring table looked extremely tempting, and definitely beckon on a different visit. 4.5 stars ... so utterly close to my perfect diner. It was one of my favourite spots to eat while visiting Vancouver. Oh Fable diner... you were the last tastes I had and what a way to leave the city on that note. I heard that this place was popular on a weekend morning but I had no idea how crazy busy it would be until I popped in and lined up BEFORE it opened. A line up of 12 people (at least) formed 10 minutes before opening and after going, I can see why. The place itself is big and open ... an upscale and warm diner is a good description. Casual but still a lot of nice touches to let you feel that this is not your regular mom and pop operations. Though I was worried about the service, they had so many people working that it was always a warm friendly hustle getting the plates out and taking orders... filling up coffee mugs. The seating is a bit cozy. We heard everyone's conversation but turns out that was actually a nice thing this time around. We had a lot of nice conversation with the neighbouring tables about the Vancouver food scene. Anyhow, service here is what you'd expect out of a diner... just super friendly and warm. FAST... did I say fast? We ordered and got our meals in about 10 minutes. Hash & eggs with beef brisket - Topped with 2 perfectly orange yolked sunny side eggs, the hash underneath was plentiful with onions, peppers, mushrooms, cheddar, and jalepeno. I do have to admit the addition of the beef brisket sounded good but the portion was very very small for $6. It was about a small take out sauce container of beef brisket. I say stick to the flavourful hash that is done well and save the $6 for bacon or sausage if you want more meat. 3.5/5 Avocado smoked mushroom Bennie on cheddar chive scones - GET THIS. I don't know why more places use scones... this was far better than any english muffin one I've ever had. It buttery, tender with the right crags and crack to take in more of the egg yolk and hollandaise AND they added cheddar and chives as if it didnt have enough flavour. I made the return visit to Fable Diner after not having been here in awhile. Vibe is still fun and has a more upscale diner feel. I ordered the Chicken Benny with Avocado added (told it was 2.50 but actually 3.50 which was quite a lot given quantity and how much normal add ons cost). The Rosti continues to stand out and is a highlight here for those who like hash browns and potatoes. The Chicken was good but the apperance would surprise people (I think some would expect it to more incorporated with the dish rather than as chicken "bites). The egg was a great medium soft consistency. After having not had this particular dish since prior visits, the Hollandaise seemed quite rich despite moderate quantity and thus made it hard to really taste much of the scone. Good or less good depending on your flavour preferences. Service was attentive (solid coffee refills) and food came out quickly which is nice given we were part of the first seating. 3 reasons why I'm a fan of Fable Diner (not to be confused with Fable Restaurant in Kits - although owned by the same people). 1. They serve an awesome all day breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu. They've got a variety of options - sweet, savoury, you name it. While they call themselves a diner, I think their food is a bit more upscale than that, although still very decently priced. I recently had their west coast toast (basically avocado toast), and it was delicious! Their poutine, hash & eggs, and breakfast plate are all really great options as well. I've also had their chickpea veggie burger, which I was a really big fan of and would definitely order again. I've had a few bites of their fried chicken sandwich and grilled cheese as well, which both I'd order on my own. Needless to say, you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. 2. Their modern, upscale diner concept. Am I in a diner or a fancy restaurant? It's a bit of both. They've got that big diner-like bar right next to the kitchen, but also plenty of seating around the restaurant. Their decor is much more modern, bright, and "Insta-pic" worthy than most diners that I've been to. But hey, I'm not complaining - it's a beautiful restaurant. 3. Convenient location. Among the hustle and bustle of Busy Main St. this spot is easy to find just off of E Broadway and Main. You can easily get here by walking, car or transit. Fable Diner, I'm a fan. Went here to eat breakfast on Apr11our last day of vacation here in Vancouver flying back to US. This place is 5 minutes walk away from our hotel, saw pictures in yelp those yummy shakes and the Loaded French Toast. Me and my husband both tried their Loaded French Toast and we were suprised and loved the taste of it. It wasn't that sweet, loved the caramelized walnuts and very mouth watering. After coming back here in the US I have been craving for it, and looking through places that can beat it so I can forget about it but NO other can replace Fable diner. I highly recommend this place and friendly staff. read more

Inspired by classic diners, Fable Diner works hard to pay homage to the all day breakfast staple outlets. The milkshakes are phenomenal and are a must try and same goes for the fruit smoothies. The food however felt quite overpriced to me and was quite heavy. It is a very rich meal and made me feel sluggish for the rest of the day. Also, the only memorable part of the meal for me was their classic potato rosti with the chive sauce. The rest of the food was too bland for me and did not excite me. I would return for the milkshakes and potato rosti, but will pass on the other menu items. read more

Probably one of the last dinners in the areas, I mean true dinner. Not some fusion laced wannabe with an $8 side of organic buttered artisan created gluten free bread. It's dinner food. You want beacon & eggs you get bacon & eggs. You want a cheese burger... well you get the idea. They have some other creations that are a little less dinery. But they are not elaborate and taste good. That and they're prices are reasonable, especially for the area. Overall a good place to grab a bite. Why 4 stars you ask, well there's always room for improvement and unfortunately there isn't a ¾ star rating. read more

I've eaten here numerous times and mostly for the ambiance of what it used to be like before it became Fable Diner. You see, I was a fan of the predecessors establishment. It was an old school run down diner that served breakfast and Chinese food. There's only a few places left like that. I wanted to take over the place and recreate that traditional flare and reignite that old flame again. But here we are now with Fables Diner, a more hipster gender neutral friendly version of that dream. No Chinese food served here, but it is a diner in the least Asian sense and that's ok. I brought on my last trip a colleague to try comfort food. He never had it and never knew it existed. In Hong Kong the closest you can get is Hong Kong cafe style food. Not quite the same. He was thrilled to have tried this food. What did he have that was so exciting you say? Meatloaf. Yes that's correct. Meatloaf. However this is not your Aunt Martha's meatloaf made with ketchup and cooked like a brick. This was quite delicious! So just for that Fable Diner gets a 4 stars! The service was good. Always is good and the vibe was fun and ummmmm hipster. BTW it's A friendly environment lgbtq friendly all the way! So another thumbs up!! read more

I went here a few weeks ago in hopes of doing the Mealshare "Tonight for Tomorrow" event to help feed less fortunate kids. Like most other restaurants that participate in Mealshare, not all menu items are under Mealshare at Fable Diner. Unfortunately for me, there were only three Mealshare options, two of which were meat-based meals and the other was a salad. Since I didn't really want to have just a salad, I opted for their Mac and Cheese instead (which wasn't under Mealshare). I also asked my hostess what milkshake she would recommend and she recommended the peanut butter and chocolate which was her favourite. The mac and cheese came out in a personal-sized cast iron pan (so cute!). It doesn't seem like a big portion but it was pretty filling for me, especially with the milkshake as a drink. I loved that it was creamy with cheese sauce and not dry and wanting unlike other places I've been to. The star of the show of that meal for me, however, was their peanut butter and chocolate milkshake. When my hostess recommended this flavour, I was a bit apprehensive to try it since I'm not a big fan of the peanut butter/chocolate combo. Was I ever wrong when I tried this milkshake! I guess it's just Reese's Pieces that I don't like. The milkshake wasn't too sweet and it had just the right thickness. The whipped cream on top was flavoured with Nutella too! I loved that they gave you the extras in their stainless steel cups so nothing gets wasted. Because I was so full and I couldn't finish my milkshake, I had to take it out. Props to Fable Diner for using corn-based take out drink containers that are 100% compostable. It's a way different experience to the diner that was previously in this location, though I enjoyed the food in both restaurants. Fable Diner is a bit pricey but it's worth it to go every so often! read more

You must get the chocolate & PB milkshake if you go here. So delicious and looks amazing for all you igers out there. I got the duck pancake and added the egg. It was really interesting. There was kimchi under the egg which made it all more flavourful. Overall it was tasty; lots of flavours going on. I also got the mushroom which was delicious. It comes with a black pepper jam...out of the world! Exceeding my expectations for mushrooms. Their burger was alright. I had a bite. The side of fries was yummy. I normally hate fries and really liked these. It was real potato. Street parking outside was not hard to find and service was good. read more

OH-MY-GOD Where do I even begin!!! I'll just get this out front right now - one of the best restaurant experiences I have ever had IN MY LIFE I expected your run of the mill diner - but what I experienced was nothing short of nirvana We came in with a small group of the best friends in my life. The atmosphere was immediately inviting yet stylistic. We sat down. First, we ordered drinks. We all got ceasars (i got a double LOL). The ceasar came with a long bean and a spiced lime swedge. The spicing on the ceasar was one of the best flavourings of any type of ceasar I haver ever had in my life. Next, lets get to the server. Now, I worked in the restaurant industry for 5 years, and let me tell you this server could write the textbook on romancing. Rarely in my life have I seen so perfect of balance of humor, information, intellect, and describing the food in a way that got my beyond excited yet never felt like I was being read an ingredient list or pushy. The food came out and my goodness, if I had expectations, they were shattered. The steak and blue cheese benny and the duck fat pancake our table shared were simply bliss.
