Went here on a rainy fall day and it was packed! We waited about 15mins for our table and the food came out relatively quickly. We tried the butcher's steak and eggs, loaded French toast, bacon jam Bennie, and our boys ordered a hamburger and pancakes from the kids menu. Everything was delicious! Except my younger one didn't care for the pancakes as much. I loved the Bennie because the base was actually a scone, not the traditional English muffin, which made it so soft and lighter tasting. I've had bacon jam before, but theirs had huge chunks of bacon in it so it was extra yummy! We devoured everything and we'll definitely be back! read more

I came here for a later dinner on a Sunday night, and it did just the trick. I ordered the duck pancake with kimchi and poached egg, which was so tasty! It was a really cool combination and I'd definitely get it again. We also had the fried chicken, but to be honest it wasn't that memorable. I also ordered the peanut butter pretzel milkshake, which was so so so good, and really unique compared to most milkshake options. My friend got the strawberry milkshake and said it was really good too - "better than White Spot". We also had one of the alcoholic milkshakes at the table, which was tasty. My friend ordered the BLT with portobello mushrooms and really enjoyed that. Like other people said, this is a diner with a very hipster vibe. I felt a little bit out of place and old to be there, as I'm from the suburbs and not at all "hipster". However, the food was really good and the atmosphere turned out to be great anyways. My one warning is that if you order a milkshake on a busy day, it may take quite a while to get to you. I came here on my last day in Vancouver. I ordered the fried chicken and grits with a side of broccolini. The fried chicken was delicious! It was well seasoned, crispy, and hot. I've never had hominy grits before, but I wish the hominy was a little softer and the grits weren't as salty, although I still ate most of it. Great little weekend brunch spot. My friend and I were thinking about going to Fable actually for Sunday brunch, but we weren't able to get ourselves out of the house until 2PM and Fable only offered brunch until 2. So we decided to go to its diner location to see what it's like. I was pleasantly surprised about the change. We went in at 2PM and we were pleasantly surprised to have a table available right away. There was a decent selection of brunch foods ranging from sweet to savoury - as well as great milkshake selection and cocktail choices (or spiked milkshake if you're indecisive). I decided to get a Vanilla, Banana and Salted Caramel Milkshake to start. The milkshake was HUGE in portion - you get the actual another cup of the milkshake (without the toppings) on the side. This was surprising (and really, if I had known, I would have just shared the milkshake). It was also not too sweet, which is perfect for me. In terms of food, my friend and I shared the roast duck pancake and the fried chicken benny on scones. The Roast Duck Pancake had a nice kick to it from the Kimchi and it was actually a really nice blend of flavours of sweet and savoury. Portion size was decent. In terms of the Benny, the chicken was well fried and it was nice that it was on a scone rather than an english muffin. The hash brown potato on the side was super tasty btw. Overall, really enjoyed my meal - tasty food, great drinks, not the cheapest but not far from your typical Vancouver fare. Not all unplanned food adventures are mistakes because coming here was definitely one of the better decisions. Originally intended to go to 33 acres brewing company but the line-up there was a mess with no clear indication of a line up and people budging in front of you from all sides...needless to say, when we arrived, there was already a wait outside the door as it was Sunday brunch hour so there was about a 45 min wait. We put our name down on the list and the host gave us an estimated time for when we should be back. The friend who I came with had actually intended to explore some of the murals in that area anyways so we spent some time doing that since the alley was just behind this place. Having done no research beforehand and everything on the menu looked good, we asked our waiter for top-sellers and he said any of the bennies, heuvos rancheros, hash and eggs and the west coast toast. They've also got a daily special listed on the wall as well. I ended up going for the Roast duck pancake thanks to photos from Yelpers and I added the egg on top of the pancake as well despite not being an egg fan (hence why I didn't get the bennies). Because brunch is so centered around breads and eggs, two of the things I don't really eat (if given a choice), I don't go to brunch often but I would most definitely leave my house for this roast duck pancake. I was pretty skeptical upon ordering this as one of the ingredients in this dish was kimchi but all skepticism was pushed aside upon first bite. It works! The pancake is sweet with salty flavors of kimchi and the savory flavours of the duck balances everything out! While it was a great dish and I wouldn't mind waiting for it again, portion wise I was able to finish the whole dish (even though I'm usually the diner that ends up with take out boxes) and so did the friend who got the bennies (and she usually eats 1.5 portions). The worse experience ever! The service was slow, our section was too crowded, it's over priced! There was 4 of us for brunch! The man who brought the food to our table seemed a bit aggressive and more or less dumped the food on the table! I can tolerate cold ham but giving the wait or forgetfulness of staff and the eggs over easy were hard, the hash browns were potatoe chucks you buy in a package at local grocers also cold! The other people I was with all had cold breakfast and my one friend said the eggs Benedict were disgusting and we've many restaurants and this is the worse! A beautiful diner from the owners of Fable. I had a great experience at their Kitsilano restaurant so I knew this would be good too. Fable Diner provides comfort food in a casual setting. The service is top notch, very friendly and attentive servers. They offered a couple of specials but we opted to order from their regular menu. We had the Butcher's Cut Steak & Frites, the Loaded Burger, a Coffee Malt milkshake and mini doughnuts for dessert. The steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare (at my request) and was seasoned well - the black pepper butter was yummy. It comes with fries and arugula salad. The burger was also delicious and comes with a choice of fries/salad/soup. If you like to dip your fries in gravy, go for that on the side! I enjoyed the milkshake, not too thick so easy to drink out of the paper straws, and the doughnuts were delightful! read more

I've been trying to get to Fable Diner for quite some time living in the neighbourhood and always in transit to get to my 99 B-line! The first day of Dine-Out outside 2020. Being the first customers of the first final seating and that the team had to quickly get up to speed what that entailed! Once everything is sorted out and it was all smooth sailing from there and then we didn't have enough people to participate in the full dine-out official event you still got to pick out all the dishes we wanted. The full on burger topped with an egg and kimchi was literally made for my physiology and heritage I loved it! At home I make prime rib burgers little bit less slightly well done but it was a fabulous messy sloppy burger and I loved it! They do their diner cuisine to a T and the wonderful music curator at the diner had me hopping and singing for every song on the playlist except for one that I did not recognize! I will be back, I am trying to enjoy all of my favourite spots and some new spots because dining is favourite pasttimes in life! read more

Yah it's been 15 years since I visited my old neighborhood & this place used to be a hole in the wall greasy scummy diner but this new diner I know will be here for a very long time. They are very friendly & attentive and their typical diner food is arguably better than any greasy spoon. The roasted duck pancake piqued my interest. It's kinda like the odd chicken & waffle thing which makes you wonder how these 2 items would work but it does. Order it with a sunny side up or soft poached egg. The runny yolk makes it taste much richer. And if you're afraid this may be on the sweet side it isn't unless you pour maple syrup on it. For me I gave it a generous dousing of hot pepper sauce at the table. Well done Fable! If I ever move back to Vancouver you will definitely be my go to for breakfast, lunch & dinner. read more

Came with a friend for Sunday brunch. There were a lot of people on the list before us, but moved pretty quickly. Only about a 10min wait. I had the fried chicken eggs benny and shared the loaded French toast. The eggs benny was amazing. You get several pieces of boneless fried chicken. It was crispy and well seasoned. Dish also comes with a piece of hash brown on the side. The French toast was okay. The candied walnuts was a nice touch. The Nutella flavor was kind of dulled down for me, but still good. I thought it was a bit pricey at $12 though. Overall, I enjoyed fable. The food and service were great and it's affordable. I popped by late Sat morning for brunch and the place was pretty packed - luckily for me I managed to squeeze in to a seat on the bar. Inside the place had a friendly and busy flow which seemed to have alot of locals. On the menu, I was sold on their Eggs Benny with Fried Chicken with tea to drink. Service was good - I got my drinks and food pretty fast where my tea was refilled right away. When the food came, the presentation was a bit jumbled - not that it matter too much but it seemed like the fried chicken was tossed on top of it - perhaps they were super busy so not a huge deal as the food was great. The fried chicken was crispy with a spicy kick to it which was perfect with the fresh scones, poached eggs and sauce. Initially, I couldn't figure out what the square piece was on my plate but it tasted great (it turned out to be their rosti). Overall - place had a great feel with wonderful brunch flavours. I was always wary of coming to Fable Diner as I try to be cautious of those 'hype' restaurants. I know, I know, try it before I judge. We came for dinner and I was not disappointed! I don't know if I'm willing to try during brunch when the lineups are way out the door, but I'd come back for dinner for sure. Roast Duck Pancake - honestly the duck got a little lost in the pancake. However, the Kimchi + pancake drizzle was an amazing pairing. I'd be totally fine if they changed this dish to just a Kimchi Pancake and reduced the cost a little. Broadway Burger - same comment I have with the Kimchi. They really know how to incorporate kimchi in to their food lol! Patty was great, not too dry, and bacon & mushroom paired really nicely as classic burger toppings. I also had the Parkside Pale Ale (thanks to the owner for reminding me of the name below!) that was on special on a Saturday night & it was bomb, even though I don't typically like beer! read more

Really liked this retro simple diner. Small menu but everyone found a item they wanted in this spur of the moment decision to dine here. Friendly staff and were seated fast and had our order in 10 min. Chickpea fritters were nicely spiced with excellent sauce. Reno Burger was a steal at $9 with fries, soup or salad included. The bun for the burger was AWESOME, great firm texture, melt in your mouth kind brioche, very impressed. Growing up abroad American diners were some sort of magical place to me. A place where the protagonist of a movie would come to overthink what his life has become and where the friendly waitress would provide the "ah-ha" moment. A true piece of Americana. It's unfortunate we see them less and less these days, but Fable Diner is a great way to experience this piece of Americana with a modern twist. Fable Diner is conveniently located on the corner of Broadway and Main St. and when I visited for lunch there was plenty of street parking available. The Diner doesn't stand out from the outside, but inside it definitely feels like a diner with a trendy contemporary look. I was seated right away. Some of the tables are a little bit too close to each other to my liking. It is as if you sit together with another party and casual private conversation isn't possible. Luckily they could re-seat us to one of the booths. The menu is based on classic Diner as well again, all with a bit of a modern twist. We ordered a strawberry shake, the Grilled Cheezus, and theTomato Soup and Barnston Island Salad. The food was brought out quite quickly and the portion sizes were large! Especially given that the prices are very decent the portions were way larger than I expected. The strawberry shake was delicious. Rich in flavour and very fresh. The soup was very creamy and rich in flavour while the salad added a nice freshness in combination with the richness of the soup. I understand why they call it the Grilled Cheezus. It wouldn't surprise me if this grilled cheese sandwich was part of the last supper. The combination of multiple kinds of cheese on one grilled cheese sandwich is a great idea. The staff was friendly and regularly checked in with us without disturbing the conversation. The reason I don't give 5 stars is that I feel the tables are a bit too close to each other. If we would've ended up at one of the other tables it would have taken away from being able to make conversation well. First time Fabler. Overall, the food was solid. The All Day Breakfast selection was a bit disappointing though, so if you were coming in on a weekday, you might be disappointed at the choices you have. So instead, I had the fried chicken sandwich and it was a good solid piece of fried chicken. A good touch was that you could split sides to half fries, half salad - a nice touch for someone who is indecisive and likes a bit of both. I was a bit disappointed in their dressing though - its a simple olive oil based dressing - but it had absolutely no flavour. I had to take a star off for that. Pricing wise, its in line with the other hipster diners in the area/around Vancouver, so no surprises there. read more

So I ordered a pancake breakfast for delivery and it arrived without any butter or maple syrup, I had assumed that those were givins so the fact that I didn't have any butter or maple syrup at home at the moment didn't dissuade me from choosing pancakes for brunner. Long story short I'm sitting here exceedingly disappointed trying to force myself to eat too cold, dry, flavorless pancakes. Thanks for that. Visted Fable Diner as part of the Pattypass promotion, and it did not disappoint. I ordered the Commercial Burger and my spouse ordered the Broadway burger. My burger had kimchi on it and was maybe one of the messiest burgers I've ever eaten, which isn't a complaint. The kimchi and melty cheese were pretty amazing together, but my spouse's burger was our favourite, with sauteed mushrooms and caramelized onions and other good stuff. Service was friendly. This review is only for their brunch menu. It was a 20 min wait for 3 people at 11am Sunday morning, not too shabby. Roast duck pancake ($14) 3.5/5 Flavours were good, but for $14, was expecting at least two pancakes instead of one! I prefer the pulled pork pancakes over at Jam Café. Huevos Rancheros ($12) 3/5 Good flavours, again portion was quite small. Fried chicken benny 2.5/5 Liked the lemony zest in the chicken but there was not enough gravy! Service was good, but we felt a little bit rushed at the end. We were nearly done but wanted to sit and chat for a bit over tea and coffee. A few bites were still left on the plates and our server came to ask on two separate occasions if she could take them away. The second time around, we hastily ate what was left so that she could clear it. Overall, their brunch wasn't overly impressive and I wouldn't come back again for it. I've been to Fable Diner a couple of times and each time it pretty much just rates a meh from me. Did breakfast this morning because my usual place was closed. It wasn't overly busy but it still took longer that it should have for someone to actually show up to seat me. Menu is ok. Ordered the all day breakfast. Eggs were perfectly cooked, but over salted. They only had sourdough bread for toast. Don't know if that's normal, but it seemed odd to me. The thick cut bacon was underdone and I think was a "maple bacon". Far too sweet and there was no bacon flavor at all, just sweet syrup flavour which, unfortunately ran into my eggs. I want my bacon to taste like bacon, not maple syrup. I opted for the Rasti instead of the breakfast potatoes (what's up with short french fries instead of hash browns these days?) and it ended up being a fancy, over cooked/under cooked in the middle version of a fast food hash browns. Service was good, once I was seated, and the coffee was good. All in all, nothing to drive me back there. It's a shame. As bad and cheap as it was, I liked the Reno better when it was there. read more

This is a really solid choice for some great food any time of day. Most regularly we go for weekend brunch, when my number one pick is their fried chicken benny--it's just about the best fried chicken breakfast item in the city. When dad was visiting, he enjoyed the steak and eggs. And the rosti they make is excellent. For weekday breakfasts they have a reduced menu, but you can still get the rosti and classic diner breakfast items--eggs, breakfast meats, milkshakes! I don't often go for weekday, lunch but my partner does and their hash is his favorite go-to item. Their milkshakes are awesome--particularly the chocolate peanut butter. They also make boozy milkshakes, which are fun on the weekends. We were thrilled when Fable moved into this space in the neighbourhood and are frequent flyers here. Update: October 26-Tried their mac&Cheese as a side with our "regular" which is when we go a la cart with our favourite items (fried chicken+rosti+egg). All food makes you feel cozy and welcome. We came on Sunday around 12:45. The 20 mins wait wasn't bad. We ordered Avocado&Mushroom Benny, West Coast Toast (with smoked salmon), plus their signature Chocolate Peanut Pretzel Milkshake. Everything is very tasty with great presentation. Our waitress is super nice too. The only thing made me actually want to give a 4.5 rating is food tastes overall on heavy side, a bit too salty and sweet. Sorry, I am Cantonese, we normally prefer lighter flavour. read more

My favorite brunch dish is the Roast Duck Pancake. Please, guys! Never remove that from the menu! That is the main reason why I go to that location. The French toast is also delicious btw. We came here for Valentine's Day and we ordered the set menu. We had soup to start, gnocchi and ribs as our mains, and for dessert we had chocolate cake and a deconstructed strawberry crumble. The food was excellent, the gnocchi being our favourite. The price for the set menu was very reasonable, however we felt the service was lacking a bit (did not refill our drinks, brought our order to the wrong table). Fable Diner has a lot of particularly desirable qualities for a restaurant. Its consistent, simple and also damn good. Fable Diner takes the traditional diner style and adds its own gourmet twist that doesn't feel intimidating. It knows what it is and sticks to it. A perfect example of this began right from the moment i sat down and was informed that they only served diner style pot coffee. As a girl who usually loves a good iced latte with oak milk i was initially taken aback, but then actually started to warm to the authenticity. My partner and i shared their poutine while he had the avocado benny special and i had the pulled pork sandwich. As a Canadian who isn't as in love with the nationally loved poutine as some, Fable Diner gas almost converted me. The gravy was fantastic, not too greasy or watery with the addition of caramelized onions that really made the fries pop. And of course, there was a healthy portion of cheese curds to go along with it. Avo benny featured a suprisingly good hollandaise and crispy potatoes, while my pulled pork was tender with a sauce that complimented the sandwich quite nicely. Also, bill came up to $25 each for the two of us which i thought was good value for the quality we received. They were so nice and treated us so well. Now, the food. It was soooooooooo good! We ordered many things because we wanted to taste so much. The Duck pancakes were a hit!! Everyone loved it. The Bacon & Eggs were perfect, and the fact you get to choose from different styles of bacon is awesome. I preferred the thin, but my friend liked the thicker one. Quality of this place has gone down. I used to go here a lot last year and they burnt my chicken burger before. But yesterday l went in for breakfast. I ordered 'my usual' hash n eggs. Wasn't just disappointing it was down right appalling. Eggs were barely seared, and they plopped em down on top of everything so when l attempted to move them off, they leaked yolk all over. The portions were 1/3 the normal size, so i couldn't even fill up on the hashbrowns. I understand it was a holiday and they were busy, but it was $17 for slop and l barely touched it.
