One of the all-around best restaurants in Kitsilano, Fable has served as an awesome treat for my girlfriend and I for over 2 years now. We don't go often, but whenever we do we're always blown away. Rude service, Poor waitlist-management. The hostess seated "friends" first despite the fact that we were next in line to be seated. We didn't have a reservation for dinner but the hostess said that no one else was waiting and there should be a spot available at the bar in about 20 minutes. She told us that walk-ins are seated on a first-come, first-served basis so we decided to stay and wait. 15 minutes later, two people came in and they were told that the wait would be 20 minutes. On their way out, they yelled into the kitchen (at someone they obviously knew) that there were no tables available. They said their hellos and then walked out of the restaurant. Someone from the restaurant ran after them and they had a conversation outside the restaurant that I did not hear. The "friends" left for about 10 minutes and when they came back, they were seated in the recently vacated spot at the bar despite the fact that we had already been waiting for 25 minutes. The hostess had blatantly seated "friends" first. When I asked why they were seated before us, she told us they had a reservation. This was clearly not the case since I was standing by the hostess station and overheard their conversation. Seating by party size and call-ahead/reservation is fair but giving priority to "friends" is not. The hostess blatantly lied about their "reservation" and was quite rude when I asked about it. Had avocado salmon toast, was very good. There's a line and it's super busy so I guess a lot of people enjoy this place. The wait to get in and the wait to get food was a little long, but I guess that's the price of popularity. read more

I have been watching Top Chef Canada religiously and was a big fan of Trevor. My boyfriend and I went twice to have dinner there already. Both times, WOW the food was amazing! Every bite was delicious. I strongly recommend the Spaghetti and Meatballs first course and the Halibut and Chorizo main. When the restaurant got less busy, Trevor was going around tables and talking to the diners. He was so much fun to talk to. The only reason I am not giving the restaurant 5 stars is that they tend to run out of some of the items on the menu. The 2 times we have been there they did and seemed not to inform their staff so it was a little frustrating to order something that you actually couldn't get. I definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone and will be returning soon! read more

It is one of my favourite spots in Vancouver. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, the food is delicious, and you can see that everyone working there (especially the owner), really love and care for what they do. I so wanted to love this place. Farm to table? My kind of concept. With so many great reviews, my expectations were high. I decided to treat my friend to a birthday brunch. While I can't have eggs or dairy, I can have meat. (Before you judge me, My friend and I have eaten brunch at many places along 4th Ave and this has never been a problem before.) After seeing not many egg-free choices, I asked the server what my options were. He seemed stumped. "Well, you could have french toast, no, I guess not... you could have our eggs benny there is no dairy in the sauce... oh wait, that's eggs...." In the end, I suggested the sausage. He could not come up with anything to accompany my sausage so again had to come up a suggestion of potatoes and toast. "You want sausage and potatoes? Do you want toast with that?" Well, I had already suggested it but I said yes. When it finally came out, it looked horrible on the plate!!! It was all brown and sad looking. My sausage was dried out, my toast was VERY crisp (how about a little olive oil or something?). My friend, who ordered a benny, at least got a nice green salad. How come I was not told this was an option? I am very disappointed in the food and service that I received. My server was not at all helpful, in fact, we found him to quite curt and snobbish. When he finally brought out our bill, he said "I brought you fruit because there is butter in the cookie" but never actually brought me any fruit!!! And then, to top it off, he had left out the coffee on our bill. I was just handing over my credit card when he muttered, "Oh, I left out the coffee" went back to the till to add to my bill. Who does that? If a server makes a (small) mistake they should acknowledge it and not add it on to the bill in the middle of payment! My friend felt the benny was okay but she was not impressed with the service. I will never return because of the way I was treated and the mediocre food and presentation. I didn't think my request was that off the wall and I was made to feel like a second class customer. read more

Recently went to Fable with some friends from New York, they loved it, felt it was as good as any they'd visit at home. Their only complaint were the modest cocktail sizes. Canned Tuna and chickpea fritters were highlights. read more

We've been to Fable four times as of this week and we've loved it every single time. The best appetizer are the chickpea fritters. They had an amazing duck dish over the winter but removed it to make room for spring/summer inspired dishes. The gnocchi was incredible as well as the butcher's cut. My favourite dessert was the maple cake but it was removed again to make room for other desserts. Our waiter, Ben recommended the smores dessert and claimed it was "life-changing". I'd say it was definitely an amazing dessert. The food was incredible every time we have gone and the service is ALWAYS amazing. This time in particular, our server Ben was great, attentive and very knowledgeable. Everytime new dishes would come out for us, the staff would describe every detail on the plate which is a nice touch. We live in the area of Kits and take all of our out-of-town guests here. We think it's a tremendous restaurant! read more

Let me start by saying that I love Fable's style. I walked in and was very impressed with the brick walls and dim lights. They pull off the dim lighting very well, without making it overly romantic or stuffy so it's a good place to go for most occasions. I did feel as though my usual loud, joking antics were out of place there and subdued myself slightly. The food was fantastic. The chicken was mind blowing - best I've ever had. It was also gone in three bites, and that isn't a testament to how great it tasted, it's a testament to the fact that I got a minuscule portion for way more than I thought was a fair price. As a relatively small guy, I rarely run into portions that I find are too small, and have never met them at small restaurants on 4th that live in the same neighbourhood as The Noodle Box and Scoop. I was wearing a t shirt and shorts, so I was pretty sure I hadn't stumbled into a five star restaurant with a two month long waiting list and taken Bruce Waynes reservation by mistake, so why were the portions so tiny and the bill so pricey? I'm no foody by any means, so the "best chicken I've ever had" isn't worth the preposterous price for me. I'll stick to the "damn good chicken" I can get elsewhere in larger portions at lower prices. The service did make up for the experience, as they noticed my displeasure and compensated for it adequately. I can definitely see Fable as being right up someone's alley, but not my alley. The decor and ambience are impressive and the cooking is great, but I think they should reevaluate their prices and portion sizes and be truer to their location. read more

I'm going to be completely honest, the only reason I chose to eat here was the name. I mean, come on, Fable?! That's badass. So, I decided I'd check out this eatery with a girl I'd taken on a couple dates (we met on tinder, but who needs to know). Anyway, she's looking all posh and has this snazzy dark lipstick on, meanwhile I'm looking dashing with a fresh (sides-shaved) haircut, and then this waitress comes up to take our drink orders. Within two seconds I'm ready to put myself up for adoption, I mean, this lady is easily in her late fifties but she's charming, welcoming, and is making me look like a stud to my tinderette--and it didn't hurt that she knew the whole menu like the back of her hand and had great food and wine recommendations. Long story short, I order the salmon (which melted in my mouth and was paired wonderfully with this beet puree) and she orders the gnocchi, which is causing her to make all sorts of sounds (this dish is seriously doing it for her). We are about to get desert but we realize that my gluten allergy isn't leaving us with too many choices so we decide to take the bill and move onward (not Fable's fault, I'm just a picky dude when it comes to the sweets). So I get in my dad-car, the corolla, and she jumps in shotgun and I look at her and say, "where should we go for desert?" I kid you not, this smokeshow looks me back right in the eyes and boldly says, "not sure, but I know I want to bang you." Now I'm no scientist, but I'm fairly convinced that Fable's gnocchi is a an aphrodisiac of some sort, because I didn't see that coming. We had a last-minute reservation at Fable on our recent trip to Vancouver. The evening began nicely enough as we were seated, were greeted by our waiter, and placed our orders. It quickly deteriorated when the young woman bringing our bread knocked an entire glass of water into my lap. It was a cold snowy night and being drenched in icewater while dining was not in my plan. We had not ordered an appetizer, but after the water was wiped up from the floor, our table, and to some degree, my clothing, it was only moments until my salmon arrived. It was beautifully plated and I looked forward to enjoying it once my husband's meal was delivered. Unfortunately, my plate sat in front of me for 35 full minutes before his dinner arrived. In that time, a manager appeared and apologized for the situation. He explained that the tri-tip steak my husband had ordered was a new item and it had not shown up to be prepared. Our waiter did bring over an appetizer so that my husband, who is diabetic and needed to eat, would have something. By the time his entrée arrived, mine was cold, but we made the best of it. The manager, Andy, came over to tell my husband that he would "take care of it," by which we assumed he meant he would take my husband's dinner off the bill. The food was absolutely delicious, perfectly prepared, and magnificently showcased. We ordered a lemon meringue parfait to share for dessert and it was delicious -- Lemon curd and lemon ice cream topped with a swirl of Italian meringue. Absolutely melted on the tongue. After our tea/coffee, we asked for the check. Our waiter brought it and the total was $0.00. We asked for Andy and told him that we were not comfortable with this. We appreciated his offer to cover my husband's entrée, but did not feel that this was necessary. Andy insisted that "too many things went wrong" to expect us to pay for the meal. We argued for a while, but finally accepted his very gracious gesture. This is a charming, small, farm to table restaurant that deserves its outstanding and growing reputation. I have eaten at Fable many times since it opened. However, it is a popular restaurant and known to be good, so I am not always able to get a reservation when I want one. For this reason, I hadn't been there for a bit and last week I went and was blown away by how good both the service and the food was. Everyone (and I mean everyone, including the chef, Trevor Bird) welcomed us enthusiastically. The bartender served our drinks himself and the server was both knowledgeable and friendly. I had the fresh tomato tart that just sang of summer and the gnocchi and pulled pork. Now, I had the gnocchi and pulled pork on a previous visit and found it too salty, so I asked the server if it is normally a salty dish or was that an anomaly. She talked to the chef and said that it should not be too salty and he would ensure that it was seasoned properly and it was perfection. The combination of flavours, the peas and kale, the gnocchi and pulled pork, just sang. A few days later, I had dinner at Burdock & Co, an award winning restaurant, and I was amazed at the difference. The server couldn't answer any questions that we asked her (why are the noodles "Alkaline noodles" on the menu, I am sure that many people ask that question, etc.). She told us that they have small plates so we should order at least six; we started with four and that was sufficient. They didn't ask us how we wanted our steak done and the hanger steak was grisly. And it was expensive! Yes, it is creative. Yes, some of it was good (the gnudi and the buttermilk chicken), but I would take Fable anytime. Last but not least, Fable is so welcoming, whereas at Burdock & Co, only our server noticed us. read more

We came here on a Sunday evening to celebrate our anniversary. We were greeted by several staff and Georgina (I believe that's her name) helped us get sorted out so we could get a table. The restaurant was full, but Georgina moved a few things around when there was a no-show for a reservation and got us seated within a few minutes. She was very professional and treated us very well. The food was great. My wife had a smoked duck breast and I ordered the butcher's cut (stiletto) served on top of a bok choy salad. Oh yeah, we also ordered this AMAZING cornbread which was by far, the best cornbread I've ever had. Our server Daniel was excellent as well. He was very engaging with us, with great knowledge of the food and drinks. We definitely enjoyed his company. In fact, all the staff were very engaged with the customers - they really know how to run a top-notch restaurant. I would definitely come here again. read more
