I am new to the area and needed to select a vet for my cat. My selection would be based on 3 factors: distance from my home, reputation for high quality care and customer service, and cost relative to other vets in the area. This vet seemed to check the first two boxes, however when I contacted them to get even estimated costs for common procedures such as a urinalysis, just the test itself, or subcutaneous fluids, they replied that they don't give costs on those things before bringing your pet in because in part " Veterinary supplies, like our human counterparts are forever in flux and it makes it very difficult to give an accurate estimate ahead of time, or with an unknown time frame. Moreover, each procedure on it own varies by patient need." When asked if they could even give me a range on some common procedures they declined to provide that information. To be honest, the only other business I can think of that takes this approach is a Car Dealership in which they know if you get the customer in there and see that shiny new car, they have a better chance of selling it there and now without the customer shopping around over the phone. If you have to take a sick pet in, for many pet owners like myself I imagine they are anxious to do whatever is necessary without saying, wait, let me call around real quick and make sure you aren't overpriced. LOL. In fact, you have a pet that needs prescription meds, and you get them from your vet, I challenge you to contact Costco, Walgreens, or 1800PetMeds and see what the price is compared to what your vet charges you. I bet for most it is half or less than what the Vet charges and I'm sure this vet is no exception being that their basic exam fee is on the high side compared to other vets. I've been in the waiting area as I stopped in when I was in the area and it is smaller than some of the other vets but clean. It's in a fairly non-descript commercial building. It has more of a hospital waiting room feel than a homey feel that some vet places have. So while I can't rate and review the quality of care here, even if I were to assume it is very good (at least a 4-star), their non-customer centric non-transparent business practice regarding cost information is a 1 star, the waiting area a 3 and I'll even give them a benefit of the doubt and say the quality of care is 5. That's an average of 3 which I feel is generous considering their Car Dealership like practice regarding cost information. This in itself is a RED FLAG to me when considering doing business here. read more

I not only declined the vaccines in the phone call while making the appointment, but also in a text message. Screen shot attached. You are a liar and have no real concern for your clients. If you pull our pets' records, you will see that their vaccines have all been done at the SPCA. The vet came into the room and delivered the vaccines before my husband had the opportunity to ask what she was doing. He was NEVER asked. I declined twice when asked. My husband received a phone call from your office manager, but she NEVER asked him about the vaccines. Her only interest was berating him for leaving a poor Yelp review. Apparently, your business model is to lie. It is not the first time we have had an issue at this office with lying. A previous vet outright lied to me regarding an x-ray and then tried to cover up that she lied. I complained and refused to have that vet ever treat my pet again. Your office made excuses for her but I noticed her employment was short lived so assumed the issue was resolved. Now, I realize your business process includes lying to your clients and about your clients. You might want to rethink your business practices. We have happily found another vet. read more

July 2022: You can go in with your pet now! Everyone there is an animal lover and it shows. They treat your pets like their own and give them the best care. Very happy with each visit. If you can get an appointment, highly recommended! COVID times: We have to call to check in and wait for a vet tech to come out and take your pet in. No humans allowed :( You just wait outside the entire time until they call you and ask some questions, etc. It was a bit of a pain because it's a spotty service area, but our pups were always treated well and shown lots of love via treats. read more

We have been bringing our dogs here for a number of years, and while we found it expensive we had been Okay with the service received although they were always a bit of a factory. But today I end my relationship with these money hungry dollar seekers. My dog Sophie is large, about 70 lbs and is coming on to 11 years old. Lately slowing down the vet had prescribed Rimadyl for her, which is essentially a strong ibuprofen for dogs. I ran out and we now live in Tahoe. I called to ask that they call the prescription into a local pharmacy. They refused saying only they would fill the prescription. I am angry that a Vet would favor their profits over a pet's comfort. I will NOT be returning. People that worry more about their profits than the pets in their care don't deserve your patronage. read more

My 8 1/2 yo German Shepard had been having issues with her left foot. We took her to some vets in Las Vegas and they were not much help. We then moved to Reno and we decided it was time to try another vet. We picked Galena based on great reviews. And it turned out that the reviews were right! My Kaia had a tumor in her foot. They removed it very quickly! Unfortunately it turned out to be cancer however they were awesome through the whole process and even boarded Kaia for a couple weeks to ensure she did not tear her foot open after surgery. They were kind and they loved Kaia and Kaia loved them. After 3 weeks she is almost fully healed and she is back to being very active. Not sure what will happen with the cancer but for now she is a happy dog and much more energetic. We are praying for several more years! But for now we are thankful she is back to her old self! read more

Galena Vet would not accept her as a new patient and would not sign her off with a Health Certificate at the time she is to go to Hawaii. I wanted to bring her in now to have all her vaccines and make them her vet until she leaves. They would not take her. For a vet not to take a foster dog as a patient for 10 months is not a doctor I'd want to use for my dog. Think twice on using this vet for your animal. read more

I took my 7 year old golden retriever in for his annual check up and vaccinations. We were greeted by Marci at the front desk, filled out our new patient paperwork and were quickly taken back to a room. Both the assistant and vet were friendly, knowledgeable, and I felt NO pressure to buy extra services or products but felt like they gave honest, straightforward answers. How could I never update? Jasper's "kidney disease" was a false positive. Personally, I think he was looking for extra treats and tried to trick the system. He gave mom a scare for a few months, but he's healthy as a horse. Lil' stinker. Galena Veterinary is still one of the best veterinary experiences I have had in Reno. We just moved to a completely different part of town, and I am really torn about just making Jasper endure the road trip for his checkups. When you find a vet that knows your history, likes your pet and can squeeze you in when your cat has some weird thing growing on his face (BTW, it was a pimple, who knew cats could get pimples?), you just don't want to start over with another vet. Chances are I will stick with Dr. Ford and his team. Oh, and pro tip, if you refer someone and they actually tell them about the referral, you will get a small credit on your next bill. And since fur babies can be so expensive, any amount of credit helps! read more

I have taken my 65lbs pit mix to this vet for the 3 years I've lived in Reno. They are always friendly, affordable, and understanding. With COVID, they are taking extra precautions and have this down to a science! Make your appointment, then wait in your car, call when you get there. They come out and get your pet, call you during the appointment to keep you posted, and then bring your pup back out. They even take payment over the phone. If you care for your animal in any way, you will take them to a different vet. My family and I took our Boston Terrier in to see Dr. Ford roughly 3 months ago, in early January of 2024. He was having severe digestion problems and was losing weight at a rapid rate. Prior to this, he was extremely active and healthy. After two months had gone by and a constant cycle of changing meds and diets, our dog showed no signs of improving. Over the course of these two months, it was nearly impossible to get in touch with Dr. Ford when we needed to and he would never get back to us when he claimed he would. When we took our Boston Terrier to Dr. Ford in early March, he had already lost nearly a 3rd of his body weight. He was so skinny you could see his ribs and hips. Dr. Ford continued as though he wasn't concerned and continued the process of changing meds, adding steroids, telling us to get certain kinds of dog food. As things progressed to get worse, we took him to our local vet for a 2nd opinion. The vet was in shock it had gotten this bad. They continued to say how they couldn't believe it had gotten this bad without taking more serious action. We were eventually able to get into a stomach/digestion specialist last week, the first week of April. They too were shocked it had gotten this bad. He was skin and bones. Sadly, it was too late. We had to put our wonderful pup down a week later (Yesterday, April 9th) because he had lost over half of his body weight and his body was beginning to shut down. I am still struggling to grasp how much Dr. Ford and his clinic let our family down. I cannot believe they let our boy get so horrendously sick without taking more serious action. Throughout this entire process it was extremely difficult to get Dr. Ford to even respond to our questions. We got significantly more help from a Facebook support group than we ever did from Dr. Ford. Please, do yourself and your animal a favor and take them to literally any other vet in Reno. I cannot help but hold them responsible for our boy leaving us years before his time. We are heartbroken. read more

I used Galena Veterinary Hospital not under good circumstances. We had a 13 year old German Shepherd that needed to be put down. GVH is close to where we live so we decided to ask them to help us do this emotionally painful task. We got there a little after 4PM and carried our dog in, we were put in a examination room with our dog and they brought in some blankets. The staff at that time was friendly and helpful and we did appreciate it. The Dr., when he came in was not in the same mood. He was somewhat cold and detached. He explained what was going to be done to put our dog down and then started the process. He gave her something to relax her and allowed us to visit for a few minutes before coming back in and administering the drugs to put her down. The real issue for me was after that - the Dr. really wanted to rush things along. I know it was getting close to 5PM at that point and he made us feel like we were staying back too long and that he wanted us out of there. It's a somewhat traumatic experience and while we wanted to spend more time with her once she had passed were were essentially shown the door. I know this isn't an easy task for all parties involved but I really think the Dr. needs to have a little more compassion. Maybe he was just having a bad day or had an appointment to be at and it was just bad timing, but regardless it happened at the wrong time for us. Because of this experience we decided not to take our two other GSD's here for any care. read more

I've been taking my two cats here since I've moved to Reno. It's convenient since it's literally blocks away from home, but I keep coming back because of the veterinarians and staff here. They've always been pleasant to work with, and I can really tell they love what they do. The vets take the time to talk with me and explain anything I need to know. One of my cats is somewhat prone to illness and I took him in yesterday because, with a history of bladder crystals, I was worried he was having problems again. With a quick centesis we discovered his crystals were back and he had a UTI. Dr. Ford took the time to explain the severity that a UTI in a cat can be, which I greatly appreciated. I hadn't realized how catastrophic it could be for a feline. So armed with that information I knew I had to keep and eye on him at home. Dr. Ford then took the time to call me today to check up on Sam. I greatly appreciate him taking his time out of the day to do that. It really shows he cares. I was planning to call him today to ask some questions I hadn't thought of asking at the clinic yesterday when I was upset, but thankfully don't have to try to get him on the line (I know how busy they can be). We got a new puppy and they have been great. Their four week puppy class teaches you puppy basics, but also teaches your dog to love going to the vet. The staff is friendly and caring. **THIS REVIEW IS FOR DR. ERIN PRICE ONLY** I was looking for a local vet to take our mixed Chihuahua to as a new "patient". Her old vet had retired. Dr. Price and Galena Vet Hospital was referred to us, along with a couple of other places, and we picked Dr. Price simply based on good references and location. DR. PRICE IS WONDERFUL! She is patient, kind, mindful of her "patients' issues" when she's handling them (our dog is neurotic, she handled her very well!), and she is just overall really, really good with animals. You can tell she has a connection with them, and they with her. Our dog doesn't like anybody...but she warmed up to Dr. Price instantly. I knew immediately she was the one for us. We have been back 3 times now and I'm getting ready to make another appointment. I would have no reservations whatsoever about referring folks to Dr. Price. We thought she was just fabulous! 5 STARS OVERALL - the hospital was clean enough (wasn't all stinky either!), Dr. Price was wonderful, prices VERY reasonable in my opinion, appointments easy to make, very nice staff...just a very positive experience for our dog as well - and that was the most important thing to us. Did NOT care for Priscilla at all, to the point of changing vets. She was rude and made me very uncomfortable. It was as if I was in the wrong for daring to have a human family instead of canine only. I love my dogs, and most other dogs, but my human children are my priority. When I would bring in my young children during a vet visit, she would browbeat them because they couldn't control a large, yet friendly, Labrador. Naturally, I picked up the slack, but she would continue to rant, under her breath, of course. I like Dr. Ford, and I never had any issues with his care, but I am so much happier now at Mt. Rose Veterinary, a family-friendly vet. All the staff there is "normal," with lives outside of their work. I have heard that Priscilla trains dogs on the side, so maybe this is her sales technique... no thanks. read more
