This has been one of our favorite spots in Sunnyvale, well before Covid-19. We really want to continue supporting local restaurants, but tonight's dinner was nothing like what we're used to from Falafel Stop. We ordered schnitzel but got shawarma. It would be fine, but the shawarma wasn't good. Usually the pita bread is amazingly fresh, warm, and fluffy, but tonight it was stale. The falafel is normally warm and delicious, but tonight we got bland, refrigerator-cold falafel. I know restaurants are struggling during this pandemic, so we'll give this place another try sometime. Best mediterranean joint in south bay! We usually end up taking the falafel plates. The pitas and falafel are fresh and super yumm. The chicken shawarma and falafel sandwiches are super yummy too. Okay, so the food is excellent. The pita bread is awesome, falafels are great, and the meat options are delicious (recently I tried the Jerusalem mix and it was noms, the shwarma dark meat options are great too). However, as other people have noted, the ordering/pick-up system is terrible. You order first, then get a ticket for either the veggie line or the meat area. Veggie is easy, just wait in line with everybody else. For the meat options, though, you need to stand and sit super close by, otherwise you won't hear them call your number. Worse, if you missed them calling your number they'll berate you for not answering when your number was called, and then make you wait even longer to get your food. It's kind of a terrible experience, until you get the delicious food and begrudgingly admit it was all worth it. Kind of. read more

Been a customer here since I was in middle school and now that I'm in my mid 20's having moved to east San Jose, it's still worth it for me to drive nearly 30 miles round trip to get my food from here. They are extremely generous with their serving. I'd say I'm a hefty girl and that being said, their vegetarian option, the falafel plate (I'm a big carnivore btw and I'd usually buy their meat opt) definitely fills me up. There are some reviews claiming unfriendly workers and messy/cheap packaging and they aren't wrong. But over a decade of being a customer here, there have been better employees with great attitude than not. In terms of packaging and the/or the messiness, it's understandable when they are all trained to work in a fast pace environment (even when you're the only customer, it's just their muscle memory) it's likely to drop a few veggies and or tahini, etc on the edges of the box. There are also people who complain of missing or wrong items but in my honest opinion, missing items should be checked before leaving the lot... wrong items that cannot be checked until actually eating can't be really helped and that is definitely the store's fault. However, with everything being said, I cannot praise this place more than enough. I've tried halal guys, nick the greek, and other similar Mediterranean joints and nothing comes as close to hitting all the right spots like this place. read more

I saw one of the food preparation staff put both hands on the receipts. Then he pulled up the big cabbage bucket under the veggie stand. Refilled the cabbage to a smaller metal container with the same hand. He try to prepare my meals and my baby so I asked him to change the gloves. As I was watching and waiting for my meals, the lady ( who by the way messed up my order) at the counter was back & forth the two areas and said "it's just receipts!" I mean she is the one who handles CASH. She shouldn't even be there looking at the receipts by the food preparation area. I would suggest you watch your own food. Fluffiest pita bread ever! I'd come back for the pita bread for sure. Ordered the falafel plate and the shawarma with fries. All the sides and fixins tasted fresh and perfectly seasoned. Hummus was yummy! I got the spicy sauce on the side because I didn't know what to expect but it wasn't too spicy and wouldn't mind just plopping on with everything else next time. Falafel was crispy and tasty and will probably order it again over the shawarma. My only peeve is the ordering process which would definitely be confusing for a first-timer. Luckily we went with a friend who frequents the joint so she walked us through but I would have definitely been lost without her. You have to order and pay at one counter and depending on your dish (meat vs veg) you have to go to a different counter in different areas of the place. They told us they'd call out numbers when they were ready to make our food, but we never heard numbers called out and people who had ordered and paid after us were standing in a line where they put your order together. I ordered a falafel wrap, hummus, and fries. As others have said the ordering makes no sense. The fries and other hot food are on a different ticket and on the other side of the restaurant. The falafel was OK, but the wrap didn't have much flavor except for copious amounts of raw onion. The fries were good, no complaints there. The hummus was absolutely vile. There was water was separating out and it looked more like unmixed tahini. It had no flavor whatsoever, and dripped all throughout the togo bag and onto my other items. I guess I must be the exception to the general feelings about this place. My first basic requirement is that the food is not overly wet so the pita bread becomes a soaking sloppy mess. Evidently this must be near impossible for most falafel joints to accomplish. I don't understand that at all. They cut a portion of the pita bread off to begin with. Why not use that portion as a liner at the bottom of the pita to start? And while I'm harping on the pita bread, emphasis should be placed on the word "bread" because it's closer to that in consistency instead of a true Mediterranean pita. Oddly setup for ordering and paying for your meal. You go inside the place to take care of business then you go back outside to pick up your order. Unless you know the routine you can stand there forever attempting to order until a good Samaritan explains the facts of life to you. The food preparer takes your receipt and proceeds to make your falafel sandwich. Now this is interesting. It's like watching someone try to put 4 pounds of sausage in a 2 pound casing. But, she was successful and I was in awe of her skills at shoving so much into so little! But, here comes the dilemma. The lettuce and other veggies are "wet" and they start to seep their juices into the pita and in no time at all you're holding a mess in your hands with most of it running down your arm. I do not like falafel and I love this place. OK so probably I have not had good falafel before this. They make an amazing falafel pita with fresh cucumber salad and falafels and other delicious stuff bursting out of it. So good. The pitas are also fresh, made on site as far as I can tell (I mean, I don't know, but tasting them, they are soft and steaming and they seem fresh out of the oven so I'm pretty sure). There is a bit of a trick to ordering here. You order and pay, then you take your ticket and go get in another line (usually the longer of the two lines... for ordering there is generally little or no line). Don't just go sit down and assume your food will be made. Instead, get in the biggest line you see. When your turn in line comes, you have to turn in your ticket and then they make the food fresh in front of you. A half pita sandwich is a meal. Whole pita sandwich? You are a beast. They also have meat dishes... tried one once and it wasn't too special but I'm sure there's a whole menu I haven't explored so... moving on... Parking here is like parachuting onto a thin ledge. If you're lucky, you get in and off the street, and then can hunt for or wait for a space in very narrow quarters. Not a lot of room for maneuvering. Make sure your driver is comfortable in tight spaces. The good news is turnover is very frequent, so spaces open all the time. It's just getting in quickly that is the trick, because you don't want to be the one backing up traffic on De Anza or Sunnyvale Saratoga Road or whatever Mathilda (can we have more names for the same road, please?) is called at this segment. read more
