Celebrated our anniversary at Fall Line and the service and meal was fantastic. We had Michelle who took very good care of us. Best server we've had in a while. Our drinks were never empty, the meal was well paced and she was delighted to offer us a gelato to celebrate. We started with fried oysters and lump crab hush puppies. Both were very well prepared, and excellent portions for the price. My husband ordered the braised short rib, which was fall off the bone tender, over a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes, chippolini onions, carrots and mushrooms which deepened the flavor. I ordered the miso glazed Halibut in dashi broth. The fish was tender and perfectly prepared, the broth was slightly salty and all the veggies were blanched so they didn't dissolve in the bowl. Finally, we ordered crème brûlée and key lime pie. The crème brûlée was silky and sweet. The key lime pie was tart and creamy with a healthy topping of toasted meringue. We saw great reviews for Fall Line so we headed there for brunch after church. It is on the lobby level of a Marriott Hotel. When we arrived we were told that they had a 10-15 minute wait despite the dining room looking very empty (see pics). When we said that we had a reservation, they told us that they would need to get a table ready. We were seated and our waitress came over to take drink orders. She then realized that we hadn't been given menus. She got them for us and then told us that the kitchen was on a 5-10 minute hold so she couldn't take any food orders. Ok... My husband ordered the Kentucky breakfast mule and the waitress returned to tell us that no mules could be made. They had been out of the syrup needed to make them for two days. She then informed us that the kitchen would be ready in 3-4 minutes. This wasn't starting off well. We ordered the cheeseburger and hot honey chicken sandwich as entrees along with a side of bacon and an order of biscuits. Forty-five minutes after we'd arrived the food came to the table. As I got ready to eat the burger I saw the secret sauce on it instead of on the side as was requested. At that point, I told them not to worry about remaking it. They took it off the bill and I just decided to eat something else at home. My husband said his hot honey chicken sandwich was just ok as the chicken wasn't seasoned. The only flavor was in the sauces. Well, this was disappointing as we drove about a half hour to eat at this place. After more than an hour there I didn't try any of their food except a few fries and a biscuit. So I can't really comment on the food. But, the establishment would benefit from improved management as putting kitchen orders on hold during brunch hours with a relatively empty dining room isn't ideal. Our waitress also must've been new. She seemed overwhelmed with two tables that had a total of three diners. We gave her more than a 20% tip despite our less than great dining experience but I can't imagine that we'll come back here during the next several years that we'll be in the area. read more

We decided to have breakfast here since the decor is wonderful and inviting. We love the vibe of the space and its layout. There is a large bar area with indoor and outdoor dining. It's very cozy and could be romantic for dinner. Our server was nice and attentive. We ordered a basic breakfast of scrambled eggs with toast and potatoes. Our eggs were salty and the chicken sausages were bland and dry. We were disappointed with the food. I cannot speak for lunch and dinner service. First time here very dark but beautifully designed dining room. We didn't order apps. I had a glass of wine and my partner had an old fashioned they enjoyed. I order the salmon which was a bit overcooked. The Carolina gold rice was the star of my dish. My partner ordered the belly on pork chop after our server recommended and let us know they're the only restaurant in this area with that particular cut. We later learned why. Of course as the name "belly on" implies, it's a fatty piece of meat. There was barely any actual chop just a ton of fat that was not rendered well covered in a delicious glaze. My partner was tremendously disappointed. The carrots on the side were the star of that meal. read more

Had a great time at Fall Line for dinner on a Sunday night. Wonderful outside seating and a great server Maya. We walked in and were grated by the host. We were given the choice to sit out side and had a great corner table. Our server came out with water, special menu and was ready to take our drink order. Sorry for no pictures. The wife and I split a wedge salad, and a share plate was brought right out. Hate having to ask for one. I got the Halibut that was hot, delicious and full of flavor the broth really brought the dish together. The wife got the short rib that was good till the last bite. Will be back for sure. read more

I always love to stop at Fall Line for dinner when I'm in Richmond for business. The food, service, and ambience is always top notch, and consistently great ( not always the case at most establishments and especially for hotel restaurants!). Joe waited on me tonight and he was absolutely wonderful, so professional, and courteous. As was the host and the service manager who stopped by at the end of my meal to check on everything. It's so refreshing to see a restaurant that values high standards of service, and customer experience. I usually always get the NY strip steak. It's always cooked to perfection and the portions are generous. I've also had the chicken entree and bucatini dishes, both are excellent and beautifully prepared. Given all the good reviews in yelp as well as other magazines and websites I was disappointed by Fall Line Kitchen. Nothing was bad but it wasn't great either. The first thing that struck me was the restaurant is located in the Marriot. Nothing wrong with that per se, but I was wanting to support a local business when I made the reservations. It wasn't mentioned (or at least it wasn't memorable) in any of the reviews I read. The restaurant itself was pleasant enough and our server was very nice and engaged us by being friendly but not overly chummy. However, our utensils were pretty dirty after eating the appetizer (Pimento Fritters) and the appetizer plates were never cleared from the table despite being stacked at the edge where they could be taken easily and it was clear we weren't using them. The Pimento Fritter was tasty, but one dimensional. The cheese was so melted it was more like having queso and a breaded crust than a fritter. I think that it could be improved by mixing some green tomato cubes into the cheese before frying. The Truffled Bucatini was ok. It had a nice smell and taste of truffles. The sauce was a little grainy as if it had broken, but that might have been too much grated parmesan. The disappointing part is that it was literally just a bowl of noodles and sauce but cost more than the cheeseburger and almost as much as the shrimp and grits, or fried chicken which had more components and probably more effort to prepare. Seems like it should have come with some bread, a small salad or something. The Braised Short Rib was very tasty. The Short Rib was tender and not fatty. The sauce was rich and mixed with the mashed potatoes to be quite rich. The mushrooms and carrots added extra depth of flavor and more texture. This was the star of the night - at least for the main dishes. Lots of people seem to like the gooey butter cake for dessert. The flavor was pretty good. Sort of like a chocolate chip cookie without the chips. The vanilla ice cream melted over the warm cake to make a nice gooey mess (in a good way). Mine was a little too gooey. I preferred the outer edges. Could have been in the oven another minute or too. The peanut butter pretzel pie was really tasty. The peanut butter mousse filling was pretty light and the cream on top with chocolate and the pretzel crust complemented it nicely. As I said, nothing really wrong with the food, but not quite the level I was expecting considering all the positive reviews and the cost. read more

We were looking for a place to eat in downtown and my husband chose this place as it has space for our kids to walk around (inside a hotel). Food was fantastic and the kids loved it since they were able to walk around before the food came. We shaded French toast, omelette, and the biscuits. Everything was delicious. Stopped into Fall Line Kitchen when Uliveto wasn't open. We were greeted by a young lady who MADE you answer when she asked, "How are you" and you didn't hear her. Wasn't sure how to take that, but... We were seated all the way in the back. Our server was exceptional. Highly skilled. Attentive as needed. Knew how to present the meals, what questions to ask, etc. I got the Braised Short Ribs with mashed potato, carrot and mushroom. Delicious. It actually tastes a lot like the BF's cooking (he's a great cook). He got the halibut. Fresh. Nice presentation. I tasted it, and it was just kinda okay. Cocktails were good. We skipped dessert since we were going to pick up Shyndigz instead. Ambiance is contemporary and dimly lit, setting a mood. I expected A LOT from this place, but thought it was nice, but it didn't blow me away. There are other restaurants in RVA that do blow me away. Would I come again? This is a solid bar/restaurant. It's connected to the Marriot (i believe) downtown. I came in just before 10pm to have a drink and dinner at the bar. Service: The service was a bit slow but good. It took a while for someone to greet me and take my order. I decided to put in my complete order at one time for fear, someone wouldn't come back and I would have to wave the bartenders down. The bartenders seemed extremely busy, so I get it. They were probably servicing the party happening on the other side of the bar. 6.5/10 Ambiance: it was a nice nighttime ambiance. It was dark, with individual lighting at the bar and at tables, which created for a nice mood. It was very loud, however as there was an event going on in the other side of the bar that was a bit rowdy. I didn't mind, however. 8/10 Food: i ordered the wedge salad. It was half of an iceberg head, boiled egg, blue cheese crumbles, tomato, pickled onion, and a smoked piece of pork belly. The flavors paired together nicely. The acidity from the pickled onions was a nice touch. 8/10. I also ordered the shoestring fries. They were not shoestring fries. They are the same size as McDonalds fries. Nothing special, no frills, served with ketchup. $8. 6/10. Drink: i got my normal drink, old fashioned with Woodford Reserve. It was a really good old fashioned. 8/10. Overall: the food was solid, my drink was very good, but i think everything was slightly overpriced for what i received. The drink was $16 which i think is standard, but $14 for the wedge salad and $8 for standard fries with no frills is pricey to me. 7/10 read more

I cannot say enough about the dining experience we had at Fall Line Kitchen & Bar. I visited on Monday night, Labor Day. The restaurant opens at 5 p.m., so we enjoyed drinks at the bar about 20 minutes beforehand. The bartender was super friendly--I wish I remembered his name! We had a few sips and a nice chat with him, and before we knew it, the restaurant was ushering people in. The hostesses were wonderful, and our waitress, Jess, was spectacular! She was training a new server, and they were both so sweet. Jess was incredibly informative and welcoming--her knowledge and warm demeanor truly enhanced the experience. I ordered the fried oysters to share with my date, followed by the huge Belly-On Pork Chop, while my date had the Braised Short Rib. Both dishes were fantastic! I always appreciate when restaurants like Fall Line deliver not only excellent food but also outstanding service. Although I live outside the area, my next visit to Richmond will definitely include a stop at Fall Line--with a special request for Jess, whose great customer service made the evening unforgettable. Came here on Valentine's Day before a show at the National and I fell in love with this restaurant! Located inside the Marriott Downtown, we were greeted by the most welcoming (and fashionable) hosts. The decor is simple but beautiful and they provided some special Valentines Day treats. The food was delicious - the crab hush puppies are amazing. I also loved the French onion soup and my husband enjoyed the steak & frites. My only complaint with the food was Fall Line's shrimp and grits had no grits, just a clump of white rice topped with cocktail shrimp and butter sauce.
