Coming from Wisconsin (where we are used to some pretty lax rules) next month and wondering if we come around opening time on a Wednesday evening, are school - age children allowed inside?

I would say no, because it's a bar. But you could call and ask just in case.

Are there tiki mugs available for purchase?

Yes! Currently we have 4 different mugs for purchase only at the bar.

Are the reservations still available? It looks like the site on opentable is down on my end

Yes! We do book up quite fast. We always run a waitlist, nightly. The waitlist can be for standing room, the bar or a table if we have any cancellations.

Can't get a reservation! What's the chance of getting a walk in? Late on a Friday night for 2.

They'll let you in on a space available basis. It's tight in there, and weekends are usually packed. You may have to just stand the entire time you're in there. If you're only planning to have a drink or two, it won't be too bad.

He spent a long time inspecting my CA REAL ID before going into the back. He returned and said he can't let me in since he doesn't trust my ID. He said store policy is that they have to be able to feel the imprint on your license's signature, which even he admitted that he could, but it was too faded so he wouldn't let me in. I showed him matching credit cards, Costco membership, and CA DMV mobile drivers license, but he still refused and pleaded ignorance. He gave me my driver's license back and said I'm lucky because he normally keeps fakes (thanks for the empty threat). In reality, he knew my license was legitimate and didn't want to have the cops called on him. This place really needs to update their policies and train their staff better on how to identify legitimate IDs. I'm definitely not gong to bother coming here again and will make sure I recommend others not to come here.

They said they could give us another restaurant recommendation and then proceeded to just dismiss us without even that courtesy. We go back to verify this age limit, and it's there... one TINY line 2 scrolls down on the page, WAY beyond any of the information needed to just book a table, which is the only thing Open Table is used for. Complete waste of time for a poorly advertised bar with zero helpful staff on a dumpy street by the airport.

We wanted to share the tomato bisque so we asked for bowls and spoons. We had to ask for bowls and spoons three times. They finally brought out bowls but no spoons. The soup was lukewarm by then and we gave up asking. We had to eat the soup with the fries or tip the bowl... I mean they were super nice though. Maybe it was just a busy day. The view was absolutely gorgeous... I would come again just to see it.

You have to go through Craft & Commerce, a fantastic place on its own, and then you find this hidden gem. It's like a speakeasy but with tiki flair. Very smart, very clever. Now, the ambiance--WOW! You walk in, and it's like stepping into a Polynesian paradise. Tiki carvings, exotic decor, and even special effects like thunderstorms when certain drinks are ordered. Very immersive, very high-energy. It's like being on a tropical vacation without leaving San Diego. The drinks? Absolutely top-notch. They have an extensive menu with classic tiki cocktails and unique creations. Each drink is a work of art, served in custom tiki mugs. Cool hidden tiki bar! A friend of mine told me about this place and I had to check it out. Thank you, fellow yelpers, for the heads up on making a reservation. My friends and I made our reservation about a week in advance. I am not sure if you need that much time to reserve a spot, but a week should be more than enough, unless it is a holiday or special weekend. In my opinion the coolest part about this experience was walking through the freezer to get in. That is correct, you first walk into Craft and Commerce, let the hostess know you have a reservation at False Idol, and then boom, the freezer opens and you walk into a tropical paradise bar. This place has really embraced the tiki theme. The menu was almost overwhelming with all of the tropical cocktail options they had. However, the bartender was really sweet and helpful with aiding us in what drinks to pick. The Ode de Okelenhao he mentioned was a favorite. So I went with this as my first drink. Definitely had an interesting flavor of vanilla mixed with other yummy flavors (that I really couldn't identify), but can confidently say I enjoyed it. The second drink I had was called Doctor Funk. This one was a fresh tasting mix of rum and lime. My friends all enjoyed their cocktails as well. The prices for this place are pretty steep. False Idol touts itself as a speakeasy style place, but it's not hidden and not hard to get into. You'll still be surrounded by 20-somethings taking selfies. I read that you'd need to enter through a cooler door, but really it's open with a hostess in front, so, do with that what you will. That was somewhat disappointing. Aside from that, the vibe is fun since they really committed to the theme. You'll see skulls, flames, Polynesian decor and an IG worthy ceiling (the gorgeous colorful orbs!) Service is friendly and they really know the drinks well (when asking about sweet vs tart, etc). It was a good time and i'm glad we came, but I can't say i'm blown away by the whole thing. If you haven't been to Hale Pale in Portland, your tiki bar standards might not be as stupidly/needlessly high as mine. Either way, it's nice to have a little tiki bar in SD. :) read more

My girlfriend and I recently visited False Idol for the second time, coming all the way from Los Angeles, and once again, it was a fantastic experience. Despite not having a reservation, we were seated immediately, which was a nice surprise. The tiki-themed decor and immersive atmosphere really transport you to another world. Of course, we had to order one of their popular cocktails, the "Navy Grog," which was expertly crafted with a perfect balance of sweetness and spice. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the overall vibe was fun and energetic. We had a great time and will definitely be back. AMAZING spot! The best dive bar i've ever been to. They literally have hundreds of whiskys. They have a solid standard cocktail list and then can make whatever other drinks you choose. The bartenders were super attentive around everyone at the bar and put a lot of care into each drink. We had the whisky sour, be good or be gone, sazarac & the old fashioned. At about $10 a drink you can't beat it. Note on weekends there may be a little bit of a wait. It seems like they do this so that the inside isn't packed and comfortable for everyone. Making time for my king... Tiki Bar proper called "False Idol"! Its located in the freezer of Craft & Commerce. It's amazing because you walk into a water fall on your right... And it's decked out with everything island themed. I love it! We had a "Demerara dry float", which was a scrumptious sour drink with a shot of 151 and an "Eastern Sour", which is a Japanese whiskey sour. We're definitely coming back next week! Can't help but come here every time I'm in San Diego. Truly unique atmosphere, drinks are bomb, and the bartenders never cease to impress. It's hard for me to choose a signature drink because I love them all. JohnBoy recommended the Mac nut chi chi and it was a perfect way to end the night. WOW! What an atmosphere. I live near by and find my way here at least once a week. Sometimes just for HH during the week or for more than a couple over the weekend. It's great to come in here and always see a familiar face as most of the staff have been here since the beginning. WE LOVE FALSE IDOL! I've been frequenting different tiki bars for a while now and so far False Idol is my favorite. Ended up here after an impromptu dinner at Craft And Commerce while cruising through Little Italy. Hostess was accommodating and made us feel welcome And invited once we mentioned an interest in going into the the Tik-Easy. If I'm trying to show off my new city False Idol is my go to cocktail bar. It has an exclusivity matched by no other in San Diego. The drinks are strong, delicious, but reasonably priced for the ambiance. I've always found the mixologists to be very nice and helpful despite the exclusive environment. Previously you got three custom drinks based on your preference starting with a starter, main, and dessert style. Now, they kept the starter, main and dessert, however the "bartender's choice" is only for the main. Both the starter and dessert are options. The starter is purely based on preference and intentionally they leave out the alcohol included so that doesn't sway your decision. Their bartenders explained that this change was to meet people in the middle of experiences they might get elsewhere at speakeasy's while keeping their originality. Honestly, both experiences were great so I can't complain. For my starter, I went with the Lush + Tropical Fruit + Citric. I was stuck between that and two others, but from talking with the bartender they help break down the drink experience further. It was super helpful. We heard that some people, forgo the main drink of bartendar's choice and instead just do two starters... that is an option, but I LOVE and highly recommend going with the flow and letting the bartenders make you a drink based on your preferences. They're great at their jobs. For my husband's starter, he went with the beeswax + barley + orchard. If you like honey, you will love it. The other he was choosing between was the herbaceous + bright + oceanic, and that one looked fun. Someone else got it, and it was Icey-like (in looks). Would want to try it. For my second drink, I explained my preferred drinks are margaritas, mezcalitas, or punch style fruity/floral, smooth, and spicy drinks. I got a drink that was mezcalita based with passionfruit and spicy pepper basically. It was yum and definitely like drinks I would normally have. My third drink I went with the strawberry fields.... Highly recommend. It was in an underrated, simple glass, but has a fantastic flavor. My husband got the lemon meringue pie (as did so many people in the bar), and I was slightly worried I would have liked his more. But the strawberry fields ended up being our favorite drink of the drink between everything we had. It was just great.
