Coming from Wisconsin (where we are used to some pretty lax rules) next month and wondering if we come around opening time on a Wednesday evening, are school - age children allowed inside?

I would say no, because it's a bar. But you could call and ask just in case.

Are there tiki mugs available for purchase?

Yes! We do book up quite fast. We always run a waitlist, nightly. The waitlist can be for standing room, the bar or a table if we have any cancellations.

Can't get a reservation! What's the chance of getting a walk in? Late on a Friday night for 2.

They'll let you in on a space available basis. It's tight in there, and weekends are usually packed. You may have to just stand the entire time you're in there. If you're only planning to have a drink or two, it won't be too bad.

Some are even saying it's the Mar-a-Lago of tiki bars, and honestly, they might be right. First off, the entrance--very exclusive, very secretive. You have to go through Craft & Commerce, a fantastic place on its own, and then you find this hidden gem. It's like a speakeasy but with tiki flair. Very smart, very clever. Now, the ambiance--WOW! You walk in, and it's like stepping into a Polynesian paradise. Tiki carvings, exotic decor, and even special effects like thunderstorms when certain drinks are ordered. Very immersive, very high-energy. It's like being on a tropical vacation without leaving San Diego. The drinks? Absolutely top-notch. They have an extensive menu with classic tiki cocktails and unique creations. Each drink is a work of art, served in custom tiki mugs. Cool hidden tiki bar! A friend of mine told me about this place and I had to check it out. Thank you, fellow yelpers, for the heads up on making a reservation. My friends and I made our reservation about a week in advance. I am not sure if you need that much time to reserve a spot, but a week should be more than enough, unless it is a holiday or special weekend. In my opinion the coolest part about this experience was walking through the freezer to get in. That is correct, you first walk into Craft and Commerce, let the hostess know you have a reservation at False Idol, and then boom, the freezer opens and you walk into a tropical paradise bar. This place has really embraced the tiki theme. The menu was almost overwhelming with all of the tropical cocktail options they had. However, the bartender was really sweet and helpful with aiding us in what drinks to pick. The Ode de Okelenhao he mentioned was a favorite. So I went with this as my first drink. Definitely had an interesting flavor of vanilla mixed with other yummy flavors (that I really couldn't identify), but can confidently say I enjoyed it. The second drink I had was called Doctor Funk. This one was a fresh tasting mix of rum and lime. My friends all enjoyed their cocktails as well. The prices for this place are pretty steep. Absolutely HORRIBLE experience at False Idol. The hostess, Kim, told our group the wait would be approximately 15 minutes. We ended up standing there for OVER AN HOUR while watching her repeatedly let other groups inside ahead of us. When I asked Kim why those groups were being admitted first, she claimed they all had reservations. However, when we spoke directly to the people waiting in line and the groups she allowed inside, they confirmed that they did NOT have reservations. Instead of being honest with us, Kim deliberately misled us and continued making us wait. Then, after finally allowing my friends inside, she told them they had to leave approximately 30 minutes later. Her behavior was unbelievably rude, dismissive, dishonest, and completely unprofessional from beginning to end. This was some of the worst service and most disrespectful treatment we have ever experienced at any establishment. Being busy is understandable. Misleading customers, treating them like they don't matter, and selectively allowing other walk-in groups ahead of them is not. Whatever atmosphere False Idol is trying to create is completely ruined by the way guests are treated at the door. Management seriously needs to address how Kim treats customers. We will never return, and I would strongly recommend spending your money somewhere that actually values its guests. read more

False Idol touts itself as a speakeasy style place, but it's not hidden and not hard to get into. You'll still be surrounded by 20-somethings taking selfies. I read that you'd need to enter through a cooler door, but really it's open with a hostess in front, so, do with that what you will. That was somewhat disappointing. Aside from that, the vibe is fun since they really committed to the theme. You'll see skulls, flames, Polynesian decor and an IG worthy ceiling (the gorgeous colorful orbs!) Service is friendly and they really know the drinks well (when asking about sweet vs tart, etc). It was a good time and i'm glad we came, but I can't say i'm blown away by the whole thing. My girlfriend and I recently visited False Idol for the second time, coming all the way from Los Angeles, and once again, it was a fantastic experience. Despite not having a reservation, we were seated immediately, which was a nice surprise. The tiki-themed decor and immersive atmosphere really transport you to another world. Of course, we had to order one of their popular cocktails, the "Navy Grog," which was expertly crafted with a perfect balance of sweetness and spice. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the overall vibe was fun and energetic. We had a great time and will definitely be back. AMAZING spot! The best dive bar i've ever been to. They literally have hundreds of whiskys. They have a solid standard cocktail list and then can make whatever other drinks you choose. The bartenders were super attentive around everyone at the bar and put a lot of care into each drink. We had the whisky sour, be good or be gone, sazarac & the old fashioned. At about $10 a drink you can't beat it. Note on weekends there may be a little bit of a wait. It seems like they do this so that the inside isn't packed and comfortable for everyone. Making time for my king... Tiki Bar proper called "False Idol"! Its located in the freezer of Craft & Commerce. It's amazing because you walk into a water fall on your right... And it's decked out with everything island themed. I love it! We had a "Demerara dry float", which was a scrumptious sour drink with a shot of 151 and an "Eastern Sour", which is a Japanese whiskey sour. We're definitely coming back next week! Can't help but come here every time I'm in San Diego. Truly unique atmosphere, drinks are bomb, and the bartenders never cease to impress. It's hard for me to choose a signature drink because I love them all. JohnBoy recommended the Mac nut chi chi and it was a perfect way to end the night. WOW! What an atmosphere. I live near by and find my way here at least once a week. Sometimes just for HH during the week or for more than a couple over the weekend. It's great to come in here and always see a familiar face as most of the staff have been here since the beginning. WE LOVE FALSE IDOL! I've been frequenting different tiki bars for a while now and so far False Idol is my favorite. Ended up here after an impromptu dinner at Craft And Commerce while cruising through Little Italy. Hostess was accommodating and made us feel welcome And invited once we mentioned an interest in going into the the Tik-Easy. Our bartendress "Bill" was quick to get us some classic cocktails with a special, sassy twist. We even got to drink from some of the private mug collection! If I'm trying to show off my new city False Idol is my go to cocktail bar. It has an exclusivity matched by no other in San Diego. The drinks are strong, delicious, but reasonably priced for the ambiance. I've always found the mixologists to be very nice and helpful despite the exclusive environment. It used to be packed on any given night, but now half the tables were empty with "reserved" sign on them, even at 7pm on a Saturday night. We wanted to switch to a different table because the setting sun was glaring directly into our eyes, but we were denied. Why anyone decided to orient majority of the tables such a way, instead of rotating the tables 90 degrees so the sun hits the profile rather than head on, is beyond me. Lastly, and the most unforgiveable thing, the drinks were horrible for this price point at $45 for 2 drinks including tax and tip. Husband got Tickle My Pickle, and the name was the best of part about it. It read like a dirty martini, but tasted like straight up pickle brine. I got Shanghai Nights, which was watery, and the coconut foam added nothing to the drink except a mess, since the server sloshed it everywhere on the table. Basically both drinks were good in conception but the execution was very imbalanced. We originally planned to get some snacks and 2 drinks each while waiting for our 9pm dinner reservation elsewhere, but left immediately after the first drinks. Unlikely to return.

The North Park area is a great neighborhood with many different types of food close by. We randomly came across Side Bar on a Thursday night and met Keagan, who completely transformed our entire trip. He was the ultimate curator! He immediately assessed our group's vibe, realized we were out for team bonding, and invited us right in, securing a fantastic VIP booth for my team. After a few shots and grooving to great music, he personally ushered us over to Gaslamplighter for a change of scenery, where we spent the rest of the night enjoying amazing drinks and live karaoke. The experience was so incredible that on our second night out, after hopping around various other bars in the Gaslamp Quarter, our team unanimously decided to end our night right back at Side Bar. Once again, Keagan took flawless care of us. He hooked us up with another booth and a few bottles. We happened to be celebrating a team member's birthday that night, and Keagan made it unforgettable. The staff brought out the full VIP treatment with bright sparklers and "Happy Birthday" signs to close out the night in style. What makes Keagan so special is his attention to detail. Even while working a packed club and making his rounds to ensure everyone was taken care of, he constantly circled back to check on our group. He made every single person on our team feel incredibly important and looked after on both nights. We walked away with fantastic pictures, amazing team memories, and a strong desire to return. i have been here 2x now. both times i came in on a karaoke night, super excited about it because i…read moresee it all over instagram & tiktok. i own a karaoke DJ business myself, so i love checking out other places. both times that i have come in- the karaoke line moves SO slow. we came in tonight (9/26/26) and signed up immediately. i sang after about 45 mins- only after tipping off the KJ and introducing myself to him... the KJ himself is cool, but i just don't think he knows what he's doing. the mics were quiet, i couldn't hear anybody singing or any of his announcements. but he's a really good DJ and very nice so i'll give him that. then, it took 2 HOURS!!! before we finally went up to the kj and asked why my friends hadn't sang yet. they all signed up at the same exact time as me. i know he clearly bumped me up to be nice, which is great. but there's just no reason why it should take over 2 hours for my friends to sing 1 song. i counted, and there was maybe 60-70 people in the bar and he has the same 5 people singing over and over again in the time we were there. the bar is cool if your vibe is expensive ass drinks ($20 each) and a DJ in a crowded spot where you get bumped all night. but if you're looking for a karaoke bar- absolutely don't waste your time. we spent over 2 hours here on my birthday WAITING for our friends to sing and i felt like i literally wasted my birthday. i will never come here again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
