For many many years when we still lived in NJ, we went regularly to Famous Daves on 22 in Mountainside. It was our go to after church, for family gatherings, for birthdays and when company came to visit. We have not been for several years, having moved out of the area. Visiting our daughter here, We went to dinner there Friday night. WHAT A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. The restaurant has been remodeled, and all of the homey decor and pictures reflecting its roots in Northern Wisconsin have been stripped away. The menu has changed. The restaurant was almost empty on a FRIDAY night, while I remember waiting an hour and a half for a table most times we came. The bartender had to be pressed into waiting tables and I saw the manager serving as well. Almost nothing was gluten free, whereas I used to order a lot of things. There are only 3 sauces now, the ribs were ok, not succulent as they used to be. They did go out of their way to bring me brisket without the sauce so I could eat it. Errors were made, the host was surly, the poor bartender/waiter was frazzled, and all in all it was just NOT the famous Daves I loved and missed. What a shame. read more

Here lies one of my favorite BBQ spots, the perfect place to go to when you want to go grab some drinks with the boys and have some delicious food while venting about your problems. It's also the place to take your girlfriend when she had a long day and is taking her anger out on you. The moral of the story is that you will always be in a better mood when you eat at Dave's. A good, solid barbeque option. For a weekend lunch, the place was pretty empty so that probably helped us get great service. I love when I get refills without having to flag the waitress down. If you do have to wait, they have really comfortable couches instead of hard benches. I had the combo of St. Louis ribs and chicken. The meat was tender and falling of the rib bone and the chicken was nice and juicy. It comes with two sides and a corn bread, so even though it is a bit pricey, it made enough for two meals worth for me. I'm also glad they went back to their regular menu with pictures and descriptions, as last time I came they were testing a small menu to make the servers explain everything. I much prefer reading descriptions than asking a dozen questions and I'm sure the servers prefer that too. They also gave us a small shared plate of barbeque flavored chips that I've never had here before so I'm not sure if it's like free bread at other restaurants, but they had a nice thick crisp to them so I was glad to try them. I've been here a few times and have had good experiences here. Once I was worried I wouldn't get a parking spot and it'a decent sized lot. If it's that popular, it must be a good sign. read more

I've always loved coming here and th is was nothing different. It was a bit unorganized in the beginning where we couldn't figure out who was sitting us. We were a party of 6 but I knew they handle bigger groups than us. We order sangria both white and red and white they both were very bitter ( it tasted like we were drinking lime juice) so we asked for a change. The long island also tasted like limeade. We changed the drinks for some run lunch which was made well surprisingly. The food I can't complain about because it was delicious and perfectly cooked. Ive been a loyal customer to this place for years! I love this place. When its not crowded, it provides the best bbq food u can have. When it is crowded the quality lacks. Anyway this time i came here on a late friday night, like around 10pm. It was quite dead and an hour before close. The staff was friendly. I ordered the bbq salmon with mac and cheese and fries, my friend ordered the bbq pulled pork with mash and potato salad, and we got 2 frozen lemonades. The drinks took a while, and so did the food. First time at this location. We arrived for a late lunch and was seated quickly. The restaurant wasn't busy at the time. The Food: Finding good BBQ is hard to come by, and yet his place delivers. I was very satisfied with my lunch. I ordered the three meat combo with two pieces of bbq and catfish. My husband ordered the Famous Feast. He loved his meal and was definitely satisfied with his choices. For sides I had the French fries and steamed broccoli. My husband and I shared bbq traditional wings as an appetizer. The wings came out hot and delicious. Cooked perfectly and tossed in the right amount of sauce. The entree was the same. I was happy with the flavor, portion size, and quality of the ingredients. Everything was seasoned well also. The Drinks: This is where this location lost points in. Unfortunately, I would not bother ordering cocktails here again. I ordered the "Smoking Iced Tea," that indicates it is prepared table-side (kind of like a show). I've had this before in another location and loved it. Not only was it not served table side as advertised, it was not flavorful at all. The drink was completely overpowered with lemon juice, which seemed like the only thing they bothered to put it in. We were one of four tables, so I don't understand why it was done properly. Instead, I was basically given a glass of ice and lemon juice. My husband got the spiked strawberry lemonade which was okay. Definitely more tart than sweet, but at least edible. He was sweet enough to switch with me and suffer with the lemon juice concoction after trying to taper it down with some of the strawberry lemonade. In summary, the food is definitely worth the visit. Especially if you like have classic BBQ options with great flavor and portions. The drinks, I wouldn't bother with. Maybe if done correctly, it would have left a better impression on me. BBQ and cocktails go hand in hand, so fixing that issue is tantamount to a great experience. My guest ordered a cheeseburger MW with a side of Mac n cheese, loaded baked potato and Mac n cheese. To wash it down a tall lemonade and a Pina colada mojito. He complained the cocktail lacked. He went to the bartender and requested a shot of Malibu. With the shot, it made the cocktail nice. I ordered the St Louis 4 piece meal, with beans and coleslaw. The slaw n ribs were good. I shared a rib, so I ate 3. I wasn't impressed with the beans, aside from the fact they were less than lukewarm. I had an Arnold Palmer, which was good. For dessert I ordered the peach cobbler. What a mistake, I took one spoonful of that hot mess. I've NEVER had cobbler so horrible. Minus the cobbler and beans their service and food were good. Note: From my lunch guest to the bartender, get away from skimping and serve a signature cocktail with the right ratio of spirits, not watered down drinks. I literally licked all my fingers every single items from the fest for two was delicious. the ribs, the chicken the pork chops, the brisket mmmmmm... you have to come to this place and believe me you are gonna love it. We were in the mood for BBQ, and since they are close I said, They are Famous lets try em" Now let's start. Decorations of the restaurant was sadly predictable. The staff, here the man who helped me was great, friendly and helpful. He answered my questions and if the perfect person for that roll. The food, I ordered Brisket and Turkey. Now we start with the issues, 20 minutes to get the order, this is cooked correct? What so long? Then I got home to eat and found that both had been sauced. The brisket wasn't tender and had a bit of a metallic taste, funny not good finish. The Turkey was also sauced or some type of gravy. The turkey was tasteless, no smoke, no real flavor. I have had BBQ in a few restaurants, your order is cut in front of you and 5 minutes after you walk in you are seated with most of your order. So my thoughts, if you never had BBQ, Low and Slow try it. This place is like the McDonalds of BBQ but not in a good way. Meat is tough, chicken is bland but the sauce makes it bearable. The sides were pretty good! I mean I only had the Cole slaw, beans & broccoli so I really can't pass a proper judgement. If you're looking for some real BBQ I would stay away, stick to a pop & mom establishment because they take more pride in what they serve & im sure they'll be a bit more conservative with the price. Went to Dave's for my first time yesterday and it would be my last, they seem to have had the white people in one room, and the colored in a whole different room in the back. and at first I didn't peep, but as we were waiting to get seated, a group of about 5-6 white guys came in after we been waiting for about half an hour and they were seated in about 5 mins of them getting there. Again I didn't think much of it until another 20 mins passed and we were finally seated. But as they walked us to the back of the store to where they seemed to put the colored and Chinese people at. You can just tell they were segregating the whites from us, it was such an awful feeling, I wouldn't wanna feel again, the food was not the wait either, hope in the future they are less segregated and see everyone as equal. read more

Our service was great everyone was nice, the food came out in a timely manner. We ordered the sampler which was awesome and I got the pick three create your own meal. Ribs which surprised me how good they were, catfish sticks, brisket and mashed potatoes with the beans. These beans have been a blessing in my life for 24 years. Out of all that food the only thing i didnt enjoy was the brisket. A little overcooked if you ask me. Being that out of twelve different foods only one didnt peak my interest tells me that this place still cares about the experience you get, even though the place was a ghost town. That made me sad. Im used to waiting an hour to be seated. Instead we walked in on a friday night and there wasnt even enough people to fill up one of their dining rooms. I wish people still came here. At 3:00 PM in Hermantown Minnesota I took my Daughter, Granddaughter and her boyfriend out to celebrate my Daughter's birthday. We went to the Famous Daves at 4135 Richard Ave, Ste 101, Hermantown, MN 55811. The gentleman (I do not know if he is the manager) brought us to a table for four, but the sun was shining through the window and it would have been in the eyes of two of us, so I asked to be seated at a table that wasn't in the sun. The man stated that it was the only 4 person table that was open and we would have to wait until an occupied 4 person table was vacated. The restaurant was not busy at 3:00 in the afternoon, no one was waiting for a table and there were 2 - 6 person tables open. I asked to be seated at one of them and the man refused because he said that there were only 4 of us and a party of 6 just might come in. He totally refused to seat us at one of the 6 person tables. I'm 73 years old and I have NEVER been refused seating at ANY restaurant because they did not have an open table that would seat the exact number of persons in my party and not one chair more. read more

During the Coronavirus crisis, my wife and I tried their takeout service via DoorDash. Wow, huge mistake. DoorDash was fine and worth the money. The 'grilled chicken salad' was really underwhelming in many ways. It was essentially a chopped head of lettuce with a meager few hunks of chopped chicken. Unbelievably bad for $12.95. If anyone was supposed to be performing quality assurance, they must not have shown up for work today. The restaurant has been struggling for a few years before this but now it is clear why. Their food quality is not consistent nor good value for money. While I am reluctant to criticize under these hardship circumstances, I felt compelled to share this bad experience. Unless you are starving to death, give them a miss. Update: So, I checked back to see what the manager might have responded but alas just a canned corporate response. If you look at other reviews, you can see the same shoddy theme, pattern of low standards and no ownership. "Corporate" should have outlined a remedial action plan in their response if they were serious. You bumpkins should try visiting Texas Roadhouse up the highway a few miles and learn what 'well managed' looks like. Again, another missed opportunity. It's not the food's fault, it's the management team at the restaurant. It's a shame because other franchises have risen to the challenge. This location just shovels out shoddy food. read more

The ribs are good. Both the Sweet & Zesty or Memphis-style have their appeal but I like the flavor of the latter better. I just wish the meat would fall off the bone for if it did that alone would be another star. We went for a late lunch on a Saturday and service was very slow to the point where people sitting not too far away from us started to complain. My wife and I drove up to West Jordan and picked up a family platter of BBQ from Famous Dave's. We took the food back to my son's house to share with him and his spouse. I must say that I was impressed with the brisket, but the chicken and ribs were well below par. The chicken wasn't barbequed (roasted) and the ribs were tough and lacked flavor. This was my first visit to Famous Dave's and probably my last. I was not impressed at all. We each ordered rib me and my sister ordered the 4 bone ribs.She had beans and fries with her order and I had fries and coleslaw with my order. My brother in law ordered the 6 bone ribs with beans and coleslaw but they messed up his order and gave him 9 bone ribs with mash potatoes instead of the coleslaw. like he ordered. The food was tough and the Soda was flat. The only good thing that came out of your place was the cornbread muffin and the waitress service. The establishment was not very clean especially the bathroom and the woman's bathroom smelled terribly. I will not recommend your establishment to anyone I know.
