The food here is really good. We got the beef with pepper, mapo tofu and a stir fry chicken dish. Scallion pancake was fried crisply and very fresh. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated on the outside. Overall a delicious meal! Ordering food takes place on an iPad that can be buggy a times. Also-if you have any dietary restrictions, be very clear. My partner cannot have pork and we were assured the mapo tofu does not have pork by one waiter, while another confirmed it might have a bit of pork. I had high expectations for this spot given the strong reviews... and as someone who loves Szechuan, I love spicy food. Spice is my game! Unfortunately, it didn't quite deliver. Here's what I ordered: - Wontons in spicy chili garlic sauce: Tasty, but not spicy at all. The sauce leaned almost peanut like, which threw me off... - Diced chicken with crispy pepper: Small portion and mostly peppers. Very little chicken, just scattered pieces. Also not spicy. - Signature double cooked pork with garlic stems: Probably the standout. Flavor was on point and well balanced. - Shredded beef with hot pepper: Tender beef and enjoyable overall, but again, too many peppers and not enough beef! - Eggplant in garlic sauce: Solid. Hard to mess up, and they did it well. - Mapo tofu: Disappointing... bland and lacking the signature heat and numbing spice. - Pickled cabbage whole fish: Not what I ordered (I asked for soft tofu with fish fillet in chili sauce). I've gotten food here a few times and it's always been fine, not great, but they're open late. Tonight's order was the last time I'll be ordering though -- I ordered Dan Dan noodles and what arrived was just plain dry noodles with about 10 small crumbs of ground meat on top. 0 sauce of flavor. We mostly wanted to go for the happy hour which was an appetizer and drink for $15.99 but the happy hour started at 9:30pm and ended at 5pm. Disappointed for sure. I swung by here for dinner with friends on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Service here was good, but not as attentive as I would have liked (I had to ask them repeatedly for things such as water or an extra plate). We ordered their dumplings, truffle XLB, beef pancake, ho fun, and cumin lamb. I thought both dumplings were good but the skin was too thick and the truffle in the truffle XLB wasn't very fragrant. I loved the beef roll/pancake, however. I was super flavorful and both savory and sweet, with lots of meat and sauce. The ho fun was alright. Although it was full of shrimp, the noodles were very soft and fell apart easily (it felt overcooked). The cumin lamb was also way too salty for my liking and required rice to enjoy it with. This was a great little spot in New York for some great drinks and dinner. Food - Their Szechuan specials are delicious, but are extremely spicy. Even when I asked for it to be very mild, it was still extremely spicy. Otherwise, it was delicious, and comes with a bowl of plain rice to eat it alongside with. Their fried rice was absolutely delicious, the beef soup was delectable, and the drunken noodles were great as well. All of them have relatively generous portion sizes, especially the Szechuan specials. Service - Very friendly and nice, very attentive as well. Parking - They do not have their own parking lot. Early September, I had lunch at Fan Szechuan newly opened on Essex Street around the corner from Sour Mouse. Reservations were easy to get on Google. One can look at the menu on a tablet which has a large variety of dishes. First came a square ramekin with picked vegetables and the tastiest peanuts. I liked these so much that I asked if they were for sale. Har Gow was the best out of three dishes that I ordered. The wrapper was silky and the shrimps were plump. Pork Soup Dumplings were a tad disappointing as the wrappers were thick. Sliced beef with tofu was quite nondescript in flavor. I drank water with my meal. When I got the bill the restaurant had already chosen 22% as a tip which I changed as I didn't think that was correct. The service was fine but the bill was quite high. This is an updated review of the restaurant that we loved when we previously ate there. While the menu is still wonderful and so unique, the SERVICE HAS DETERIORATED. We were there yesterday, a Sunday evening, and the process for ordering is still "server-free", that is, you order via an iPad, not with a server. The problem is that they don't have enough staff to be able to get a server to answer menu questions or any related issues. Plus, a glitch in the system (iPad) caused our order to be cancelled after we submitted it. It was only after waiting an excessive amount of time for our food did we learn that the order was accidentally cancelled. When we finally got a server, she brought us the check, but we hadn't gotten our food. We then asked for the manager, who resubmitted the order, but we had already waited for more than 25 minutes - it took another 10 minutes to get food to our table. We complained about the poor service, and the manager apologized, saying that they had gotten so popular that they couldn't find enough workers to meet the demand. So if you decide to eat at this restaurant, know that the service may be very slow or bad at best. read more
