A friend suggested Dim Sum Palace and we had 5 or 6 dim sum dishes and the food, reminiscent of Hongkong many years ago, was absolutely delicious. Dim sum is a great way to eat just the amount of food you want, not overstuffing yourself at lunch so that you feel heavy and sleepy all afternoon.... and for me, having roast duck was a real plus, I love duck. We came here after a couples massage since it was close by on a Friday at around 8 pm without reservations. The place was packed. The seating is almost along a long hallway. We waited about 10 minutes to sit down, so not too long for a Friday without reservations. We got an old fashioned and a mango mojito as cocktails. My husband enjoyed his old fashioned, my mojito had very little mango in it and no hint of alcohol. The food came out rather quickly. We got bbq pork buns to start. They weren't what we were expecting, they had a piece of paper underneath each which was so stuck to them that my husband didn't notice and had paper in his when he bite into it. It was sticky and the texture was off, the inside was sweet. Neither one of us enjoyed it. The general tso's chicken was probably the best thing we ate. One of the first times I had it where the chicken looked like actually chicken breast and it wasn't breaded beyond recognition. The shrimp house fried rice was ok, it wasn't a favorite. Picture menu definitely helps - just put in the quantity of the items you want and give to your server when ready. Best to give them everything at once. If you want to order more later, then just ask for another menu or ask of any specific item. They also have drink menu as well...cocktails and adult beverages have to wait til after work and weekends! How come no one told me there was dim sum in Midtown?! My friend suggested this to me and I was thoroughly confused because I was always under the assumption most were in Chinatown and a smattering around Manhattan. The dim sum here is surprisingly pretty good. The har gow is sooo good and the shrimp is nice and plump. We also ordered the beef tripe and this is by far the best tripe I've had. Most places are chewy but this was melt in your mouth so good. I do think it is on the pricier end, but I think it's a solid option if you don't want to take the train to Chinatown. Also I totally left my phone at the restaurant and panicked, but the staff came out and chase us down to give it back. So kind of them! read more

Okay so there is definitely some nuance for this Dim Sum Palace. It's a 3/5 stars if we're just reviewing the dim sum and shop overall. Mainly because you can definitely get waaaaay better dim sum in Chinatown or Flushing or Brooklyn and there would also be way more options as selection is limited here. It's a 4/5 stars if you happen to be craving dim sum while in this specific area and for some reason cannot make it to Chinatown/Flushing/Brooklyn for better dim sum. Let's be honest, it's the theater district in midtown Manhattan so there won't be many other dim sum options besides Dim Sum Palace and this place will do the job! It has most of the bare basic dim sum items plus some specialities and also there are main Chinese dishes and entrees too if you were looking for more than just dim sum. Pricing is definitely not as favorable than Chinatown dim sum but you're in midtown! The items that we chose were very solid! Some other commenters had mentioned it could be a hit or miss for other items but the dishes we had were safe bets. Soup dumplings were OK but you shouldn't get soup dumplings at any dim sum place in general haha. Staff members were nice and service was quick. When you dine here, you're getting a great value all around. The menu was lenghty--a photo menu of various DIm Sum as well as a regular menu of Beef, Chicken, Rice, Noodle dishes and more. We were set to keep our selections to everything Dim Sum. We started with a hot sake. A great value at $10 simply because this was a larger bottle than usual. My friend and I were so excited to try vegetarian dim sum dishes and these were pleasant but not standout. We got 2 Vegetarian Dim Sum Platters, each of which included 2 of the Buddha Delight Dumplings (green pea on top), Mixed Mushroom Dumplings (purple skin), Bamboo Shoot Dumplings (open top), and another. These were definitely very wholesome and designed carefully with a mind for fillings, but they were all quite bland and the tasteless sticky rice got tiring. The purple Mixed Mushroom Dumplings were our favorite because they were more meaty and juicy. We also got Sweet Sesame Balls which were great. They also have other non-meat options: vegetable spring rolls, crispy vegetarian rice roll, parsley rice noodle, cucumber, pineapple cheese wontons, and their desserts. Sadly, no veggie fried rice/noodle or egg custard tarts. It would be exciting if they could incorporate plant-based meats to recreate other traditional items like lotus leaf-wrapped sticky rice and BBQ pork buns, but I understand that doing so would be a major investment. Still, people of all diets live in NY! Their menu could be improved by adding symbols to help those with dietary restrictions. We had a nice experience dining in and service was very deferential. Dimsum Palace is that perfect place if you're in Koreatown and not necessarily wanting to wait 30 minutes to an hour for a table. It's a solid place for most Chinese dishes -- a good balance between dishes that you would see on a dimsum menu as well as those that you would see in a banquet-style place. The price point is reasonable and despite how busy it gets on an average day, you can always find a table. My Chinese parents would be disappointed if they knew I went here. $8 for tea? Nonetheless, I had willingly gone when the craving for dim sum called, even if it happens in Midtown. The restaurant is like one long L-shaped hallway, with seats along the walls. The dim sum menu was pretty limited, with many of my faves missing. The Pu-erh Tea ($8) was the blandest I had, but more flavor emerged the more it steeped in there. The pot they used was transparent, allowing you to see how much is left, but the different material resulted in it being hot to the touch! The BBQ Pork Buns ($7.95) had dough that kind of sticks to your mouth. I wasn't a fan, and the meat did not stand out. The Taro Cilantro Dumpling ($6.95) intrigued us both. The wrap was super sticky and gooey. You can really taste the taro and cilantro, but the rest of the ingredients are a mystery. The Shrimp Rice Noodles ($7.95) were surprisingly bigger than average. This was due to their larger shrimps, which had a bouncy chew! The rice noodle also seemed fresh and bouncy. I would recommend this one. Another one I recommend is the Pan Fried Shrimp & Chives Dumpling ($7.95). They smelled so good, and while not as pan fried as ones I had in the past, they still slapped! Lastly, our dessert, if you will, was the Sweet Egg Yolk Creamy Bun ($6.95). It was unfortunately served lukewarm despite coming in later than the other dishes. The liquid was still there, and the bread was so smooth, a perfect cushioning for the creamy yolk. They gave 3 sauces with our meal, so this was the first time I had a spicy dim sum meal. Everything is made to order and served pretty hot (I think we only had one dish where I felt there was a temperature issue). The soup dumplings are good, and I would highly recommend trying the crab ones. That was probably my favorite dish that we ordered. Others in our party really enjoyed the pan fried tiny bun (we ordered a second one!), the crispy garlic spare ribs and the pan fried shrimp and chive. The vegetarian platter has eight rather bland dumplings with mixed vegetables, bean paste and are made with a dough that is very clingy and stringy. The chicken dumplings are rather solid and brick like but are more flavorful than the vegetable platter ones.
