There is no dim sum cart going around this restaurant. You put in your order with the cashier up front. Prices are fair, and the taste was spot on. I had not had dim sum in forever, so when my friend mentioned AweSum DimSum as the destination for our lunch, I was immediately intrigued. I turned to Yelp to see how the place fared among my fellow reviewers and was excited to see such glowing feedback. I was curious what kind of quality a fast-casual dim sum spot would provide, but the wonderful commentary convinced me to give it a shot. We met at the restaurant around 1 pm, and it was fairly empty, so we must have just missed the lunch rush. The modern space offered self-service ordering on tablets at the front or a live cashier in the back. There was a large counter and several tables between those two areas. We grabbed a table and headed up to the counter to order directly from a staff member. We each opted for the AweSum Sampler, which contained a few of the most popular dim sum items. To drink, they sold a few fruity homemade seltzers that sounded excellent, but I decided to save the calories and ordered a can of Canada Dry seltzer instead. I paid for my meal and took a buzzer that would alert me when my food was ready. In about 8 minutes the beeper went off, and I grabbed my tray of goodies from the cashier. My sampler included: -1 Sticky Rice Wrap (pork, scallops, salted egg yolk, mushroom, dried shrimp, quail egg, Chinese sausage, and chicken wrapped in a banana leaf) - greasy and super sticky, but packed a ton of flavor. Delicious! -2 Har Gow (shrimp dumplings with bamboo shoots) - delicate noodles encasing plumb shrimp. Simple, yet really well-executed. -2 Chicken Siu Mai (chicken, mushroom, and goji berry) - really tasty and packed with loads of chicken, though one of mine was rather pink inside. -1 Steamed BBQ Pork Bun - fluffy bun filled with roasted, BBQ pork that was really aromatic and sweet. This was good, but I prefer baked buns over the steamed, because I think they have more flavor and are more texturally appealing. -1 Crispy Shrimp Roll (shrimp, bamboo shoots, and yellow chives in a fried, sticky rice wrap) - I loved that this was not entirely deep-fried, but rather had thin, fried strands around it, like I have had on taro dumplings in the past. I ordered an array of dim sum to share, chicken feet, pork buns, shrimp rice rolls, eggplant wrapped shrimp, and steamed dumplings. All of the flavors completely exceeded my hesitation. They were all well prepared and the dumplings and chicken feet came in a little bamboo steamer! It was definitely on par if not slightly better than Chinatown spots! Plus this was a clean and minus all the commotion and noise of Chinatown! So definitely a plus! Also this is a self serve place you place an order on a computer and go up front to pay. In Flatiron, there aren't that many Chinese restaurants around that cater to the dim sum crowd. This place has a good selection of dim sum which is great to share with a small group or have small dishes to keep you full while on-the-go. I love the clean decor and color theme. It's easy to order through the kiosk in the middle of the restaurant and there are plenty of seats around. After you order, you have to go to the front to pay. I clicked on pay but had to run back to the kiosk to click pay again as you need to click twice. For a large order, food came out in decent time and piping hot. The winners were the shrimp dumpling, fried rice dumpling and sticky rice wrap. The shrimp dumplings were huge and generously filled. Love that the skin was thin. Very fresh. The fried rice dumpling was probably one of the best ones I've ever had because it was fresh. The outer skin was crispy with a soft bite into decent filling. Great flavor. The sticky rice was full of ingredients as it should be and giant. Filling and great for a quick lunch. The wonton soup wasn't bad. I would skip the beef tripe rice roll. I came about 7pm and half the place was shut down - meaning chairs flipped up on the tables and not in use. Was really a turn off... I wasn't sure if I should stay despite their losted times saying they were definitely still open for a while. Food: The food was bland to me. I ordered 2 items and both were bland... I had never had a steamed rice roll so maybe it just isn't my thing. The soul dumplings were disappointing to me. Despite the obvious cheesy name, one of the biggest surprises during one of my last trips back was enjoying Awesum Dimsum. It lived up to the hype and made me long for fast casual dim sum near my work place (#1). It also made me realize how much I missed working in the Flatiron and the endless possibilities of incorporating this place into our rotation of repeat lunches. One doesn't have to embarrass themselves by attempting to say the dish names to the staff. Everything is ordered through a touch screen in the front and payment is done in the front. Eventually someone will call your number with the items on the tray and then you bring it back to your table. That's it. The space is narrow and group dining can be a challenge. They've done a good job with custom tables that look more like crooked counters, but there is a good amount of seating for all parties. Bathrooms are also clean and the prices are a *little* more than the average dim sum spot. The staff is definitely a Canto speaking bunch and I admire how hard and how quickly they work. The food is good and I appreciate the picture menu. I tend to expect a watered down version of things when I'm at fast casual places like this but it really holds its own compared to any dedicated dim sum spot. I really enjoyed the fried shrimp taro cake, shrimp dumplings, rice rolls, egg tarts, and baked buns. It's tremendously easy to over order here (#2). I'd go again in a heartbeat. It's not a thing in the rest of china). So thats the positive. But for dim sum, its just mediocre dim sum. Timing is important in this kind of food and much it seems to have been made ahead of time & kept warm. Its hard to get the timing right for a near fast food place like this one so I understand & I'm happy that this place is here and it specializes in one thing rather than bring a generic Chinese place with fried rice and beef & broccoli. The siu mai was really delicious and reminded me of what you can get in Chinatown. Unfortunately, everything else was not too great. This was, hands down, one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I called to ask a simple question about an order, and the person who answered the phone acted like I had personally insulted them by calling. They were immediately rude, short, impatient, and clearly didn't want to be on the phone. I tried to clarify something and they yelled at me. Yes, actually raised their voice over nothing. Then, without warning, they just hung up on me mid-sentence. I thought maybe it was a mistake, so I called back and they did it again. No one deserves to be treated like that, especially not a paying customer trying to support a business. I won't support a place that treats people this way. Management clearly doesn't care.
