This is a wonderful bakery and the cakes are delicious! Good pastries too! I am new to the area and I have only been a couple of times but there are a lot of customers coming and going to this place because I believe it is that good. The reason I gave four stars instead of five is because I had ordered a birthday cake over the phone with multicolored flowers and I specifically told them that I did not want any pastel colors. I even sent a snap shot of a previous cake that they made with the flowers that I wanted on it.The cake ended up with bright color flowers with pastel borders along the edge of the cake and it did not look that pretty. It really looked kind of ugly. Everyone in the family thought so too so it wasn't just me. There was such a long line and I was in a hurry for the birthday party so I did not say anything. I'm just chalking it up to just one of those things and it was not that big of a deal. I think they just normally use pastel colors most of the time. It's still tasted good! I have ordered specialty cakes for birthdays several times here over several years and will likely again considering how limited Lexington is on options. If you're from Lexington...Y'all know how it is around here!! Whether it has been a chocolate cake with chocolate icing or a cake with buttercream, they always taste FANTASTIC!! With that being said, I have often felt that I needed to dumb down the designs to make it easier for them to somewhat create my visions and they have always managed to screw something up anyway. There was one time that I ordered a cake with a photo of my son on it. I left the picture with them assuming they would make an edible image, however, to my disappointment, they put the ACTUAL picture on top of the cake covered with plastic wrap and outlined it with a decorative border of buttercream icing! What?? Then there was a time I ordered a cake for my son's 16th birthday. We had it shaped like an Xbox controller. They did a fairly good job with the design (thanks to a picture my husband sent them of one I found online), but unfortunately we weren't able to find that out until the day AFTER his birthday because they were closed on the day I went to pick it up. Apparently no one caught that tiny error when I scheduled the order so that I could arrange to pick it up the day before AND I never received a call, so my son had no birthday cake on his 16th birthday...BOOOO! My husband called the next day to inquire about what happened and was still hoping to pick it up (better late than never) and they had never even made it to begin with and wanted to know if we still wanted them too. Really? Are you kidding me? Unbelievable!! So today, was my husband's 40th birthday. I had pre-ordered several items made of fondant from a couple of sellers on etsy to attach to his cake. Again, I felt I needed to dumb down the design for them instead of having them make what I needed. All they had to make was a stacked chocolate cake with chocolate icing (8 inch round cake on bottom and 6 inch round cake on top). I asked that they put a target on top to go with the theme of the fondant items I'd planned to use on my own. That's it. Even Walmart could have pulled that off! When I arrived to pick up the cake, I was able to get a quick peek inside and I was a bit surprised at how small it seemed, but saw the target on top as ordered, so was happy and paid....$56 and change (in addition to the $65 fondant decorations)....gasp! I placed the box in the front seat, strapped it in with a seat belt to prevent it from moving and drove home, which is only about 5 minutes away. When I got home and removed the cake from the box to put the fondant items on, the top layer on the cake had shifted to the side, about to fall! When I turned it around to see if it was something I might could shift back into place, I noticed it had shifted because the whole side of the bottom layer had caved in! Needless to say, I rushed to put the decorations on and gathered my children to present this cake to my husband before it turned into a complete and total disaster! After he had a chance to blow out his candles and we started to cut it up and remove the top layer, we noticed there was a cardboard layer between the two layers of cake and wooden sticks stuck inside to apparently keep everything together. Clearly this did not work! In fact, it may have done just the opposite! I'm no cake expert by any means, but it seems the cardboard may have created extra unnecessary weight and the wooden sticks created cracks in the cake that seemed to make it a bit unstable...and to top everything off, the top layer was not even chocolate cake, it was white cake...not at all what I requested and this isn't the first time I have had this issue! Clearly that isn't something you can validate when you go in for pick up. That's something you have to wait to find out once you cut into the cake, which at that point is a little too late! It may be only a minor error in itself, but coupled with the above, it warrants the 3 star rating given. I've never tried any of the other items for sell at Fancy Pastry other than their cupcakes, so I can't comment on those. This has been our go to place for cake decorating purposes only as my children have grown older and gotten out of the cartoon kits you typically get at Walmart. The employees here aren't over the top nice, but have never been rude either. So, if you are looking to get a really melt in your mouth cake with basic, generic decor then definitely go here...you will love the taste of their cakes...always fresh! On the other hand, don't have high hopes for anything too fancy, you will likely be disappointed. That's not to say they haven't created beautiful cakes for others in the past. There are several books of cake designs available upon request to look at that I assume they have created for someone, somewhere, but you likely will NOT see any they have made for me in there...just sayin! read more

This is the BEST bakery. I go several times a year and every year I make sure they do my grand daughters birthday cake. The have the BEST butter cream and the girls who work there are very nice. Their pastry and home made cookies are amazing and I have never had anything bad or even bland there. They do great decorations and will custom make any cake you request. read more

This used to be my go to bakery. Over the years imo they have went down hill. The cakes are dry. The last few cakes I ordered were not decorated well or as requested. The prices are high for the quailty. As far as the staff, sometimes they ignore you or act like you are bothering them. I stopped going here after they ruined my grandmothers birthday cake. Ordered a huge sheet cake, requested it be covered in flowers. Got the cake right before her party, it had one tiny corner with flowers, and the writing was so small it could barely be read. When I told them, they could not have cared less. The cake was dry, and I was embarrassed showing it at her party. read more

I don't usually like sweets. However, Fancy Pastry has items I could not live without. The cake squares are soft, fresh delightful mouthfuls of joy. The icing melts on your tongue. When your brain registers the bliss for the first time, you will be addicted. Everything else is great, including the breads. I want that cake square now. read more

My Fiancée and I went there to do a cake tasting and the lady helping us kept going back and forth asking the owner questions...he couldn't even have a little respect and come out of the back to introduce himself. It's not like we were buying a birthday cake...we are purchasing a wedding cake! Needless to say we did not purchase our cake from them for multiple reasons, that being one of them.I would not recommend any couple to go there for a cake...a doughnut maybe...something that takes little effort on there part is fine. read more

They certainly came through for me! I planned a birthday party from Nashville for my mother's 70th birthday. We exchanged pictures of a desired cake via email and by phone. It not only was just as the picture, but also was the best cake I've ever tasted. They always provide delicious, fresh beautiful cakes. This was no different. I would always use them. I stopped in twice this week while visiting family only to find the pastry cases practically bare. No doughnuts, no doughnut holes, and a very limited selection of a few eclairs and a fritter. Never a good sign when stopping by during the mid-morning or at lunch to find empty cases. Their made-to-order cakes seem to be their best seller because that's what all the employees seem to be working on. I would avoid this place unless you are placing a cake order. I decided to buy a cake for my daughters 2nd birthday. All I wanted was a Frozen themed cake. I simply wanted the castle, and "happy birthday" and my daughters name on it. I ended up paying $75 for a cake with a very, bad drawing of the castle Elsa made. And when you bit into the cake all you could taste was the glitter sprinkles they put ALL over the cake. It was down right horrible. I will NOT go back. Not to mention that they never have anything actually made for people who decide they just wanna stop in and get a freaking cupcake. You cannot live in Lexington or pass through Lexington without having a treat from Fancy Pastry. EVERYTHING they make is delicious. They also accept credit cards now which is WONDERFUL!!!!!! Horrible horrible service. The manager was incompetent of informing me on different types of pastries they had to offer. Not only was the manager a problem but some of the employees were just horrible. Not to me but to each other...one girl would help me and I could sense and see how the other girls were talking badly about the one that was trying to help me. Number one thing that caught me off guard was an employee sleeping on the floor leaning against the wall while other customers were there. The goods were alright but not as good as the other bakery shop in Lexington. If anyone sees this review I advise you to visit Lexington Bakery, much better quality pastries and service. read more
