Sorry, but after constant mistakes on our food, I had to stop going. The sheer aggravation wasn't worth it. If there was ever a hint that I needed to either go somewhere else or just get in the kitchen and cook, this was it! After consistently eating here for awhile, I can honestly say that I enjoyed their food. I was able to look past the issues that unfortunately, were also consistent. Our orders would ALWAYS be messed up or missing something. Sometimes, you get sick of shit like that. Can't I just drive thru and pick up my food and the shit be right?? Just once?! It never was! We'd probably been here maybe 6-8 times, at this point. You'd think they'd get it right, at least once... The last straw was when my mom was coming over to visit for movie night and I didn't feel like cooking. I was going to drive thru to grab burgers for everyone, but the drive thru was crowded and hanging out in the street, so we parked and went in. I ordered my mom a double cheeseburger with NO tomatoes. I specifically said that, because I KNOW that my mom is allergic to them. Now, understand that all this time, I never went back with my incorrect order. Once I get home after a long day, my feet are planted. However, on this day, I promptly took the order back! I was pissed and SICK. OF. THIS. SHIT! When I went in, I told the same lady who took my order that the burger is wrong. And I made sure to say, "They're ALWAYS wrong!" I told her that I ordered a double cheeseburger with NO tomatoes and this burger is not only a double cheeseburger with ONLY tomatoes, but EXTRA tomatoes, at that! Then I told her that even my receipt is wrong! The receipt said NO ONIONS! How??? I didn't even mention onions when I gave my order! This is why all these damn burgers be wrong! How does NO TOMATOES equate to NO ONIONS??! The lady tried to argue with me, telling me that that's how I ordered it! Big mistake! How the hell are you going to tell me what I ordered when I stood here in your face, not even 15-20 minutes ago??!!! To top it off, they were fairly empty inside, so I know she remembered me! I'm kind of hard to forget...that quick, anyway! So again, we keep going. Now, I KNOW that my mom is allergic to tomatoes! I specifically said NO tomatoes, because I wanted to make sure hers was ordered right and I ordered hers first, since that was the number one thing on my mind! Then here comes the cook, trying to argue with me and her, too. By that point, I was like, "Fuck this shit!" I told her that the burger needs to be remade. When someone is allergic, you can't just remove the damn tomatoes, because it touched everything else. They could still have a reaction. Some people can be more sensitive than others and this is my main boo; my mom we're talking about. I wasn't going to take a chance. Believe it or not, I held my composure and especially my anger and irritation the whole time! Even my son said he was proud of me. They finally and gruffly remade the burger and I stood there and watched them to make sure that they didn't reuse any parts of the previous burger. They weren't happy about that either, but at that point I was like, fuck them! I didn't care anymore. My wife picked up food this evening from this location and she had the burger combo and she got me the chicken sandwich. I normally get a burger as well but I am trying to make better health choices so I got the grilled chicken sandwich comboand for the second time of me having chk sandwich combo I have diarrhea and there is no other possible culprit because I had the same plain oatmeal for breakfast and trail mix and homemade smoothie for lunch I have every weekday for the past 3 months. No more than 30 minutes after consuming the chicken sandwich I am sitting on the toilet going number 1 where number 2 normally comes out and have been here on and off for 3 hours now. Never had a complaint about this joint until today. They were brining plate by plate to out table. Brought me something different from what I ordered. Asked for crispy hash browns and they were far from crispy. Took them over 30 minutes to redo my plate and bring me the correct order. They forgot our sides of dressing. My friend ordered a crispy chicken salad and the chicken was more than crispy it was burnt and toasted. Definitely not happy with today's visit. Doubt I'll be coming back. What's the meaning in a name? Apparently a lot. Fantastic Cafe on Gaffey really is fantastic. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and the dining area is always clean. I only have one issue when coming here. I never know what to eat because everything is great. I would recommend the Greek salad, the sweet potato fries, the chicken breast sandwich, and of course the diet plate. This location isnt far from my work so stopped by on the way to work after church. I Had the carne asada burrito and also orange bang. The burrito was filled with mostly beans and felt that it was too salty to my taste. Also the meat seemed hard and overcooked im guessing. Orange bang tasted as it always does. GOOD :) Service was okay. The lady was friendly. I ordered to go and drive thru so I thought service would go a little quicker. Also considering they didnt have many customers I would think my order would have been filled quicker which wasnt the case. Ordered the pastrami chili cheese fries and a small order of regular fries at 8:15 pm with three people ahead of me in line. 20 minutes later they had been served as had several who came after me. Standing alone in a city full of shipyards, port workers and refineries, Fantastic Cafe is an ancient establishment, the local Denny's/Norm's/mushpot eatery. Their menu covers a little of everything from Mexican food and burgers to steaks and sandwiches, fish and breakfast platters. It's a large place and opened late, the parking lot always with people coming from break or picking up through drive-through. K & his friend said they've been going here since 20 years ago and the place hasn't changed much at all. Frequented mainly by locals, the food isn't amazing but it's cheap (you can get full under $8-9), the portions are large and they're open late. It serves a niche in the world, I suppose. We had the charboiled chicken, served with soup of the day (lentil beans that was better than expected), tortillas (you can get your own salsa up front, hot sauce is at your table) and a choice of either french fries & onion rings or Spanish rice and refried beans. The fries were good, not soggy and soft and the onion rings typical. I got the carne asada nachos which was a bit disappointing- there was a mass of beans and unmelted shredded cheese on the bottom and the guacamole tasted like it'd come out of a can. But there was a lot of meat, the cilantro tasted fresh and it served its purpose to get me full. Guess you really have to go to a Mexican place to get good Mexican food, like anything else. Looking through reviews, I really should have gone with my first choice, the avocado bacon cheeseburger. They have some specials for each day, serve breakfast all day long (there's syrup and jam at the table) and are pretty friendly although it's self-pick up and no table service. They open late but I'm not exactly sure about the hours (we ate at 10PM). We used to go to Fantastic Cafe every one in a while, I didn't mind it, but I certainly look forward to it either. After never really finding anything edible, I found the chicken strips not to be too awful, so I started ordering the chicken strips and fries. The last time I ever went there during work, I waited at the drive thru for well over 20 minutes...which I understand that food can't be cooked lightning quick, but if you're going to have a drive thru, you have to have a fast and efficient system. Should've known something was going to gone wrong. I hate about half of the food and was feeling pretty terrible - it didn't taste good at all. Then a few hours later, it made me sick...AT WORK! I'm in between a 3 and a 4 but am feeling generous. I've been coming here since I was a kid but it'd been a while and we decided to stop in for lunch. I immediately noticed some new friendly faces followed by the nice new pleasant decor. I had a cheeseburger special an never new but you can upgrade your fries to fried zucchini for a measely buck! Woohoo that's what I did. I have always loved their ranch dressing here so I loved dippin my zucchini in it and practically wiped the bowl clean. The cheeseburger tasted kinda weird though. Those two locations are awesome. The have those yellow peppers, which I love and have all the condiments that you can want. I have had the junior hamburger special very good, perfect for a lighter bite, not too big and the fries are perfectly cooked w/ some light seasoning. I have also tried the chef salad, which is also yummy, big enough to share and the last time I went to the Gaffey location and the Long Beach location I tried the Chicken gyro sandwich....very good! juicy chicken, tomatoes, tzatziki sauce plenty of lettuce, and again the yummy fries...it is a huge meal...Also at the long beach location I tried a shrimp off my friend's plate and it was also nicely cooked..... NOW there is also another San Pedro location on Western, went there tonight and was a little disappointed...They told me that they dont make a chicken gyro even though their other two locations do. SO, not to make a stink, I ordered the regular no frills chicken sandwhich, it was ok...tried my b/f's fries and they were stale and undercooked bottom line, go to the GAffey location or the Lopng Beach location the one near CSULB....they are much better and actually have the chicken gyro...you need to try it!! After today, my favorite breakfast place, bar none. If you're the type who can't decide on something, this place will drive you nuts since there are so many choices. My recommendation is the breakfast burrito. For around $5, it's a great deal because it's so BIG! The burrito contains your choice of breakfast meat, cheddar, eggs, and hash browns. I prefer salsa on the side. Also, the french toast is delicious, sweet, and hefty in terms of portion size. Breakfast is served all day by the way. A few things that sets this Fantastic Cafe apart from other Fantastic's and restaurants is the super low price for the quality of food that you'll enjoy and the excellent customer service. Beginning when they take your order, the staff members are very knowledgeable of the menu and will make suggestions for you if you need help. All the workers have a great big smile on their face, and they seem to enjoy the camaraderie and atmosphere of the place. One in particular was especially helpful in asking if I needed a lid for my daughter, who was a bit antsy. Inside, the restaurant itself is extremely clean everywhere, including the tables (which they'll clean up right when you leave), the bathrooms, and even the air which is well ventilated. I've noticed on their menu that they have daily specials as well as daily soups. You can either dine-in, take out, drive thru, or even phone your order in. What planet are we on? I've been going to Fantastic Cafe for as long as I can remember. It has always been my go to place when I couldn't figure out what I want to eat. They have such a huge variety on the menu that there is something for any craving. For years I've been a strict lover of a few menu items, Jr. Burgers, Chili Cheese Fries, Chef Salad, BLT...all Fantastic! And now the restaurant is under new management and with it comes a brand spanking new menu items, and I LOVE IT!!! There are many new "healthy" alternative choices now on the menu, including a greek salad, the chicken pineapple burger, and the turkey burger with sweet potato fries. All delicious!!
