This review is based on the viral crab rangoon burrito, which is a limited-time item. I'll update my review if I try anything else from their regular menu. The crab rangoon burrito didn't really taste like crab rangoon. It was extremely creamy and heavily filled with cream cheese almost to the point of being overwhelming. After a few bites, it started to feel a bit sickening, and I don't think I could finish more than one slice. It was missing that traditional savory, umami flavor, and instead tasted only like cream cheese. The outer layer also didn't hold up well. It wasn't strong or crispy enough to support the filling, so everything felt soft and fell apart. It honestly made it difficult to eat without a spoon (which they did include). It was also overpriced at $16. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The service was good and the ambiance was pretty standard.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
Came for the crab rangoon burrito and was a bit disappointed. While it was made fresh, it was extremely greasy and the crab to cream cheese filling ratio was off. It kinda tastes like eating fried cream cheese. Especially if you don't dip in the sauce it just tastes very flavorless. Overall, I may revisit for a signature bao bun but the crab rangoon burrito was not it for me.
Service needs improvement. Food was good. I remember those days when Fat Bao was a trendy place to eat. I ordered Bulgogi Bao. It's flavorful but stuff falling off of the bun. The drink menu was not quite visible. I was contemplating about getting a drink. But then I was told to find a place to sit because my food was ready. So, no drink this time.
I tried the viral crab Rangoon burrito here and it was good! Outside was very crispy, sauce was pretty good, the food came out in like one or two minutes, which was surprising. I was told they sell a lot of it around 1 PM. The inside of the crab Rangoon was just OK. Overall good experience I would come back.
I think the concept is cool to try different bao flavors, but I think because this restaurant only focuses on bao, their prices need to be higher to continue business. At $15 for two baos, the Bulgogi and duck baos tasted average (bulgogi on the saltier side). They were also hard to pick up and eat because of how oily the outside of the baos were. I wish they came with those corner pocket pouches to make it easier to eat and hold like how the restaurants in nyc do it.
I was satisfied, but not super impressed. I tried the bulgogi and pork katsu bao's, and fat fries. The fries were probably my fave because they used skinny fries. Surprisingly I liked the fried pork on the pork Katsu, but it was cooked a little hard. The Bulgogi boa was a little sweeter than I expected, but the meat was tender. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a self service walk up order and take a seat. Very casual type chill place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would go back and try something different.
This place has a variety of baos if you're craving it. My friends and I got different kinds but I got the bulgogi and pepper tuna along with some curry fries. The baos are pretty good - slightly wish the bulgogi can be a little less salty and pepper tuna to be more flavorful. However, this place stills a good place to go for baos. The service is fast once you place the order at the cashier, and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the place is decorated well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
[[HIGHLIGHT]]Came here for a quick and casual weekend lunch. Its in a pretty empty strip mall so there's ample parking but also easy to miss as the strip mall as a whole almost seems abandoned.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] You order at the cashier and you can either take food to go or eat in with a seat yourself kind of deal. The staff were all friendly and helped explain the menu (as I missed the menu on the counter that had details of what the items consisted of). We ordered the yummy fries (rosemary parmesan sauce), memphis (pork belly with asian slaw), panko tuna, and crab daddy (soft shell crab). I think food was pretty fairly priced considering the amount of filling in the baos and shareable size of the fries. I really enjoyed the shoestring fries and thought they were nice and crisp and held up to the heavier sauce. The bao were also good and I personally liked the Memphis the best. I was let down by the crab daddy as it didn't have much flavor, even though its a whole soft shell crab. I'd come back for more fries as I'm a fry fiend but also curious about a lot of their other bao varieties. I do wish they had some lunch specials or something as prices can add up fast esp since a meal is probably 2-3 baos so can become a 10-20 meal pretty fast but also inflation so maybe that's normal now.
The beef bulgogi bao is phenomenal and reasonably priced. The duck is good but not amazing and a little pricey. The fried byrd is fun and different but a little heavy. And the beef curry bao was a little odd and not so tasty. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Nice people, sort of odd ambiance, weird mini mall.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Decent service. Solid 4*. I'll be back for more bulgogi bao
Fat Bao is one of Houston's most uniquely establishments. Located in upper Kirby, they specialize in a large variety of Bao buns. My favorite is their crab daddy, their most popular bun. It's a big soft shell crab with some spicy mayo and Asian slaw. The soft shell crab is really big and has a perfect crunch to it. You can actually taste the crab flavor from the innards. The spicy mayo has a tiny kick to it and provides some creaminess, pairing really well with the crunch from the Asian slaw. I would come for this bun alone. I also got the bulgogi bun which is made with marinated beef ribeye, kimchi, and green onions. The beef was tender and had a sweetness to it. The kimchi was kind of bunched in one area so I basically ate ate it in one bite. This bun was a lot more greasier too. If I come back here, which I definitely am, I'll for sure get the crab daddy and maybe try another item

The food was pretty good here! I had a few different baos from pork belly to chicken katsu. The pork belly could have been a little saltier but the chicken katsu did hit the spot. I also got the beef one but it was okay... It was too soft for my liking. The thing that did stand out for the people who loves to eat spicy. They have a home made mango habanero sauce you can ask for. All sauces you have to ask on the sides and no available on the tables. No combos really, ordered by the bao. Service was good, it's only one cashier and made some recommendations hence why we got these. I would recommend trying! read more
This was a random find scrolling thru Yelp. I love me some Bao some I had to stop in. Menu is displayed on a chalk board with some specials printed on the counter. I've only ever had savory bao so I was excited to see dessert options. I will agree with other Yelpers in that I also experienced the lack of energy from the staff. But the food! Yum! The Crab Daddy was definitely my favorite. I did swap out the spicy mayo for a less spicy sauce (I think it was the sweet chili sauce) soooooo good!! The duck was ok but could have used some more accompaniment. There was some sauce but that's all. On to dessert! I chose the s'mores bao and I don't want s'mores any other way now. It was so good! A muuuust try for bao lovers in the Houston area! This cozy fast casual restaurant has a large variety of bao buns and snacks that you are sure to find something you like. The baos are a great size, I was so full after having 2, and the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. The duck bao is my favorite! The staff is so helpful and can answer any question you may have a give you recs if you are in between a few. Service is fast and we got our food way quicker than we thought! read more

I have been twice and enjoyed it. The Bulgogi Fat Fries are very, very good. I had the pork katsu and soft shell crab baos were solid but the pork belly bao was very bland. Nice beer selection, clean, friendly staff with fast service. Apparently there's wings on select days that are very popular but I haven't had a chance to catch them yet. read more

If you've been to Jinya and had their pork belly Jinya Bun, you would think this one is okay. But if you haven't had it from there before this would be good. The soft shell crab was good but had a strong fishy flavor as you ate towards the center of it. The slaw in the crab bun didn't have much flavor-it was more for texture than taste. The bulgogi fries were good. The food was pretty quick, and they brought our food to the table we sat at. But when I initially walked up to the counter the dude just looked at me and waited for me to order versus actually greeting me or even asking what I wanted. If you want short and to the point service, that's pretty much it. The bathroom hallway reeked pretty badly and I covered up my nose as I walked to the women's restroom. The restroom wasn't dirty but it didn't have soap so that kinda sucked too. The set up is like a café when you enter, there's a menu on the window in the front and the menu on the wall behind the cashier doesn't show prices. Overall it wasn't a bad experience, but it wasn't a place that really sticks out for it's amazing food or service. I had high hopes, but unfortunately everything was pretty mediocre. I tried the duck bao and the memphis (pork belly). Both meats were dry. The duck was shredded and if you are expecting anything similar to the peking duck with hoisin sauce at Chinese dinners, this does not satisfy. The skin was more like roasted pork skin than duck skin. The memphis bao was SO saucy. Too saucy. It tasted good, but the proportion of sauce to asian slaw was off. The buns were nice and soft and was probably the best part imo. read more

Small baos for high prices? Typically I would shy away, but we decided to come here for a late night dinner and I can definitely see the hype. We asked our awesome cashier Allen what his favorites were and he recommended the Spicy Thai, Crab Daddy, Pork Katsu and Bulgogi. Spicy Thai (4/5): a fried chicken tender doused in sweet chili sauce topped with greens, this was flavorful and had a good amount of spice. Crab Daddy (3/5): soft shell crab with an Asian slaw and spicy Mayo, this was probably my least favorite, though a crowd favorite. The soft shell crab didn't have enough flavor for my tastebuds. I wouldn't get this one again. Pork Katsu (5/5): a fried pork belly with Asian slaw, avocado and tonkatsu sauce. This was hands down my favorite. Perfect bites the entire way. The slaw with the sauce and avocado paired perfectly with the fried cutlet. Bulgogi (5/5): bulgogi beef with kimchi. Flavor explosion. My tastebuds went crazy after the first bite. Highly recommend this one. I would definitely have liked the baos to be bigger, especially given the high prices, but Fat Bal really has won me over with their flavor profiles. I would recommend getting 3 per person for a meal, or maybe 2 baos and an order of fries to share. read more
Cute bao bun shop with a good menu selection. They offer a large number of different bun options, as well as appetizers, and dessert buns. As far as drinks go, they have a soda fountain (water is free, just ask for cups). They also serve bottled beer. The buns were pretty good overall but there were definitely some clear winners. RECOMMEND: Curry Beef (delicious flavor and great texture) as well as the Crab Daddy (tasty and unique). SKIP: Memphis. It had a good flavor but the pork belly was a bit on the dry side. Once you've had tender pork belly elsewhere, this will likely disappoint. I also tried their tempura-battered onion rings. They were pretty good, definitely unique. I also really enjoyed the ice cream bao (with cookies and cream ice cream). I do wish they offered more ice cream flavors (they only had vanilla and cookies and cream). Friendly service. It's been a while since I've came here so I decided to pay a visit! The restaurant was super clean and the cashier provided excellent service while taking our order. I ordered a few items and overall was a good 4/5 stars for me -- 1.) Crab Daddy Bao : This time around the crab daddy bao wasn't my favorite. I felt like it lacked a lot of flavor than how I last remember it. The spicy mayo carried but I don't think enough to where I'll order it again, even though I have been ordering that for years. 2.) Bulgogi Bao: was the star of the meal and was amazingly delicious with so much flavor. 10/10 recommend this bao! 3.) Fries: were as crispy as how I remembered it except this time spicy mayo is additional charge /-: Overall, the portion was generous! 4.) S'mores Bao: the perfect way to wrap up the meal. I spent nearly a week in Austin, Dallas, and Houston and I can easily say this was my favorite restaurant of the trip. I was served within 5-10 minutes after ordering. The Crab Daddy tasted like an exotic calamari, while the Yummy Bird reminded me of garlic parmesan wings. I got the Big Byrd, Duck, and New Yorker, as well. As for dessert, the S'mores bao was ridiculously good. All six baos were top notch. Even if this is out of your comfort zone, I highly recommend Fat Bao. read more

My wife stopped here for lunch after we landed in HTX. These Bao's definitely did not disappoint. We ended up ordering seconds! The fat fries were okay. I probably wouldn't order it again. I would have been just okay with the regular fries. The fat fries just weren't hitting for me the way that I thought they would. The soft shell crab bao was pretty good, juicy yet crispy & the crab was huge!. I wasn't a fan of the duck bao. The duck was okay. It wasn't the best I've ever had. Our favorite bao out of everything that we got was definitely the Thai Spicy chicken bao! It has such good flavor, it's all about that sauce! read more

Love this dam place so much, whatever you do order the fries they are my favorite fries ever. I like em plain but they have different styles . For the bao the soft shell crab one is my favorite , bulgogi is good as well. This place has a nice kitchen, clean restaurant and great service. This is one of my favorite houston restaurants ! My recommendation is just stay away from the wings they don't serve ranch here n the wings look 5x better than taste. They look phenomenal but then they are super overcooked and dry inside and over bearing to eat tbh. read more
Best Korean baos in town: the bulgogi fries are an absolute MUST try. Everytime friends are visiting from out of town, this is a dish I always have them try and it never fails to impress. I had the Spicy Thai and Crab Daddy from fat bao during my recent visit to Houston. The Spicy Thai was amazing and the spicy sauce was yum. Crab Daddy was good as well, would have tasted much better with more sauce. If you are a bao person you will love this place. If not, you should still try it. Will make you change your mind about bao. The place has a casual vibe to it and pretty easy to get to with lots of parking. The service was quick, and the hostess was very helpful. Would definitely recommend this place. read more

We came here for snacks. What a fun menu they have!! For starters, we had avocado chips which is battered deep fried avocado wedges. It was really creamy especially with the dipping sauce. For baos, we had the crab daddy, pork belly, bulgogi and roasted duck. There was plenty of meat in each bao. The soft shell crab a light battered and was huge! It was double the size of the bao. The roasted duck was moist and tasty.. I enjoyed the duck skin the most. It gave a crunch to each bite. The pork belly was good too but it was a little dry. Compiling all my thoughts together, I like Fat Bao overall, but I think your experience is deeply swayed depending on which Bao's you order. Crab Daddy - Must get (even if you don't like crab) Big Byrd - Great flavor, would order again Duck - Pretty good Bulgogi Bao - Solid Avocado Chips - Good, I would almost prefer an order half the size or recommend to share this at least 3 or 4 ways... it's just very heavy! Every time I crave bulgogi I order either Fat Bao's Fat Fries (regular cut fries loaded with sriracha sauce, bulgogi beef, and cilantro) or their bulgogi bao. The fries usually hit the spot, especially at night (they don't close until about 8 or 9). The mix of flavors - the spiciness of the sriracha and the sweetness of the bulgogi - make this one of my favorite snacks. One star is lost here because the amount of beef received can be inconsistent - it oscillates between just right to not right enough. I've found ordering later in the evening almost guarantees the prefect amount of beef. The baos are amazing, soft, fluffy, with a hint of sweetness. I usually order the - yup you guessed it - bulgogi bao and unlike the fries, the amount of beef complements the size of the bao and makes for a balanced dish. I've become a frequent patron and plan on continuing supporting my fave crave buster! read more

We just wanted a little snack, so fat bao sounded perfect. They recommend 2-3 baos for a meal, and we each got one. Fish bao - I didn't like the pickled apple. It didn't pair well with the fish imo. The fish was cooked perfectly though Memphis bao - pork was a bit dry, could use more sauce to compensate for that. Service is fast. Overall, 3 stars. read more
Local joint that serves an interesting concept of different dishes inside Peking duck bao. I've heard good things about the spicy thai and tried it when I went. It's tasty and a good concept, but the price does not necessarily justify the portion. The interior is somewhat unremarkable, with a good mix of bar and table seating. Not much to say about service, except that the ordering process was fine and food came out quick enough in 5-10 minutes. As a fusion joint, I'm sure this place is very competitive for the area, but I can't seem to get over charging five dollars for peking duck bao, a chicken nugget, lettuce, and sauce. Went on a Saturday afternoon and was surprised at how empty it was with so many reviews. Was suggested the big Byrd by cashier, and was the least favorite out of all that we got. The pork katsu I believe on the other hand was delicious. I enjoyed more than my husband did. Rounding up from 3.5 stars overall. read more

These things are fantastic. I've only been to one of the restaurant that specialized in these and this blew it out the water. Service here is really good in the food matched as well. Bulgogi was my favorite and frying the bun made it even better. Dessert one was a bit of a let down, so I would probably avoid that next time. read more
Food was great. The atmosphere is small and you go up and order and they bring your food. There is only a few tables and not a lot of places to park. The duck bao was decent but the duck was a little bland without the sauce. The pork katsu was awesome. It was so crunchy and not fatty like most pork belly. Definitely a solid speciality bao place in Houston. From the pictures, you can tell that they really stuff these baos which makes them both insta worthy and delicious. I'm surprised how many options there were for filling - really makes you want to come back here and try out everything. Service is simple and staff are kind and down to earth. It can get pricey if you're trying to get full, but that should not come to a surprise coming to a speciality restaurant. Honestly an overall great experience and would definitely like to come back another time. read more

This is a good place to good baos. It has many selections and their baos are nicely flavored. We love the pork belly bun and bulgogi fries. The staff are friendly and gave us great suggestions. The only thing that kept me from giving it five stars is the bun. I think the sauce is overpowering so the buns get a too soft so the ingredients fell out easily. I think the bun dough can be chewier and "bounce". read more
